Apophis;970925 wrote: Forgive me Reeyo but the region in question is one mostly populated by my people and though their plight and struggle appears to not concern you (as you have personally attested as much to me) it does concern me, hence why I have taken interest in this thread, which paints a picture far from reality. Again, forgive me if my protest appears “bitter" to you, I'd hate to disturb your Reeyo world. And for your information: I have travelled before and I'm currently traveling. But I guess one cannot be considered as “travelled" if they haven't been to the one road town (ironically) known as Hargeisa. By that standard, no, I have not travelled. Kulaha "my people," we are all Somalis here and you know nothing about the backgrounds or concerns of the people who post here, including myself. There is also nothing more real than the photos I've taken in my weeks in the kilil, and that I will continue to take when I return in a few days. Hop off.

Buraanbur Jijiga I feel like this photo best captures the chaos that is Ethiopian bus stations, and the (apparently illegal) white vans that travel between cities Degeh Bur

Haatu;970912 wrote: Safferz, where's the photos of Wardheer and the Markabul hinterland? Haatu I inquired and was told Wardheer is not very safe to visit That, and the fact that everything and everyone I needed were in Dire/Jijiga/Degeh Bur made me less inclined to venture out that far. Are you from Wardheer, Haatu?

^^ not to mention swelling the importance of SOL as a propaganda platform for the Ethiopian state, lmao. I photographed people as they live and the towns and cities as they are, there's nothing nasty or staged about it.

Hi I was so terrified on the bus between Harar and Dire Dawa (a crazy driver speeding on the road winding down those mountains) that I decided to fly back lol Pool in Dire Dawa This man yelled at me for taking his photo, but I had to The ancient walls of Harar

I'm going to take advantage of the internet access I have here in Hargeisa to dump some photos from my trip over the next few days in this thread. As some of you already know, I've been in the region for about six weeks now for research. So far haven't had to go beyond Degeh Bur, but I'm considering a trip out to Gode within the next two weeks. Feel free to add photos, I believe there's a Jijiga photos thread but I haven't seen one dedicated to the entire kilil Jijiga by bajaj An OG subclan's shir and election of a new sultan, Cobale Recording elders, living archives Women at a wedding in Degeh Bur A lot of the houses outside of Jijiga looked like this... beautiful clay walls, usually with brightly coloured walls (green seemed to be a favourite)

Apophis;970881 wrote: Safferz, you sound like those middle-class 20somethings who spend 2 months in India only to return as “experts" in their host's culture/s and mannerisms. Cut it out, it's shallow. My comment had nothing to do with Africa in particular, I feel the same way about living in Boston so I felt I could explain it. It's a popular US city to visit, and I happen to live in one of the most tourist-y areas of the city, but a vacation is always a very different experience from actually living somewhere and getting used to the place. I spend a lot of time in my apartment on SOL when I could be out doing and seeing things, too. And I am a middle class 20something But not shallow in the least.

Cambuulo iyo bun;970875 wrote: Im starting to think your arguing for the sake of argument balse "If HAG giveth, then HAG can taketh away" - Book of Hagiticus [1:21] sidaa ulaa sooco!! :D But seriously though, the Shabelle rolls into the Jubba river big time, there's no argument about that dee.

Cambuulo iyo bun;970872 wrote: saffz lower shabelle (the region) is NOT part of the Jubba's. I didn't say that, I said Lower Shabelle is an administrative region that is *not* part of the Jubbas, however the lower part of the Shabelle river, physically speaking, *is*. Riwaayada naga daaf dee, I will not stand for this HAG erasure

Cambuulo iyo bun;970863 wrote: im talking bout this. Jubbooyinka consists of Jubadda Hoose and Jubbada dhexe, sida ulaa sooco aryaahee, xeyraankaa tahay maxaan dhahaa!! Naga daa this HAG riwaayad  ** the latter not the best map but it illustrates the administrative districts we're discussing, ee sida ula soco.

Apophis;970834 wrote: I don't understand why you spend nearly all your waking hours on SOL while living in Africa ya Blond. There's so much to see and do that this place becomes almost irrelevant. But maybe there's much more things available in Kenya than in your neck of the woods. Lool. Living in Africa permanently is going to make the place as banal and ordinary as anywhere else in the world, it's nothing like shorter term visits where you're constantly going out and exploring. I'm sure Alpha has seen everything in Hargeisa at this point, maybe it felt more like a vacation when he first moved there but I'm sure it's gotten old by now. Alpha Blondy;970830 wrote: bal adna, ma istidhi? maxaad ka wada? Like all good satire, there's a lot of truth in it and I'm afraid I've encountered men who see paying for dinner as a gesture meriting repayment of another kind, which is why I felt it necessary to pay for our dinner. Should I take you up on your offer to join you for a chewing session at Alz', there should be no expectations on your end for anything else

I'm a grown woman dee, ee sida ula soco. PS I'm seeing her in Boston in December... I was DEVASTATED when I realized I'd be in Africa for the Toronto and Boston dates of the Mrs. Carter World Tour, THEN she added new dates. Praise Beysus :D

Alpha Blondy;970823 wrote: i opted for the mixed cocktail injera (vegetarian) and Saffz had the tibs, despite voicing my concerns that Ethiopian hilib is often raw. i offered to pay but she insisted on settling the bill. i didn't resist. ardent feminists like Saffz think there's a hidden obligation behind the so-called ''free lunch'' . anyway, i'd like to think we had an awesome time. Saffz is very opinionated, somewhat articulate (she deliberately used vague pseudo-intellectualist terms in our dealings) and was annoyingly argumentative. i couldn't get a word in edgeways, dee. the woman wouldn't let me express myself. I'd definitely see her again.......... if she wants to see the kid again, that is. :D LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL Reminds me of a scene from the Boondocks

Alpha Blondy;970636 wrote: interesting. balse, i reckon the Former Somalia is more like Iraq (as it was and as it is now). the kurds as the Somalilanders, saddam, the MOD and Puntland as the bogeyman/men et al, 0.5'ers as the marsh arabs, reer Baidoa as the white elephant in the room and the HAG as the shia majority. today, the dynamics are similar but with the following caveats: the shia are on the iron-throne. the sunni bogeyman/men is being squeezed out balse hell-bent on suicide-bombing the f out of everything.. the kurds are better off and have a bargaining chip because the Turks are at the helm . reer Baidoa is still the white elephant in the room and the minorities have become even more irrelevant than before as the big Boys can't decide on a way out of this quagmire. the game always stays the same, only the outside players change. maybe we need to change the game, so we can change the outcome. what do y'all think?. caajiib. :D

So I've walked into my aunt's cat a few times now by accident, usually in the middle of the night, and it's been watching me with crazy eyes all day. Is it plotting my demise? Waan ka cabsanaya

I hear there are some funky and almost decent places popping up in all over the place Ha cayin caasimada  I ended up only driving around with cousins and picking up a pizza close by after running a few errands, but I'll report back with any new findings over the next few days. I'm a pretty loyal fan of Summer Time and Ambassador though, so I'm not sure how many new places I'll be trying
