  1. December 7 1941: Japan attacks the US naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, leading the US to join the Second World War.

If I understood it correctly (knowledge is the accumulation of experiences), then I agree with it in part. Maybe wisdom is the better term because there are many forms of knowledge, what life experience gives you is only a part.
  3. Ethiopian passport issued to "David Motsamayi" in 1962, Mandela used it to enter the UK before returning to Ethiopia to receive training in guerrilla warfare. Interesting stuff...
  4. Go for it! I wasn't able to make it to the annual one in my field this year, and next year will be in Indianapolis which doesn't sound so interesting to me lol. Came across this clip today from Ira Glass... more on the story writing process, but it's also motivating to listen to for how he talks about creativity as work. " frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

  6. guleed_ali;989847 wrote: I was thinking of submitting a paper to a finance conference and they stipulated they if I were chosen to present then my presentation would be property of the conference. There was no upside to me spending a few months writing it as I'm not affiliated to that particular institutions. Unless you can get noticed or have your name circulate in your particular field, is that why most presenters participate? Interesting, that hasn't been my experience with conferences. And yes, conferences are about networking but also exchanging ideas and workshopping your work usually before finalizing it into a paper for publication. Also, for the vacation
  7. guleed_ali;989842 wrote: Once you submit it they own it right? That's probably why I'd never do a doctoral degree or a research paper based Masters. The idea of someone owning something I wrote kinda scares me. Well once it's published, you can't publish it anywhere else without the permission of the journal. But it's your intellectual property and your name is on it as author, and journals are important because it's how the academic community shares its scholarship and findings. Although there are other ways depending on the field... in some field conference presentations are more significant, in mine it's the book you publish.

  9. Tonight's (re)reading, on a quiet Friday night in: And maybe keep up my Hugh Grant streak with another movie (About a Boy?) to reward myself for a productive day
  10. What did you do to lose your license, Nin-Yaaban? lool It's 48F/9C here tonight, perfect winter weather and not too cold to walk in. Visiting my parents in Toronto in two weeks, as much as I'm glad to be going to my hometown, I'm not looking forward to the weather there
  11. Alpha Blondy;989806 wrote: fluency? naga daa, dee. i've convinced folks that i'm a dhaqan celis eh. I'd say you are, yes. You've lived in Hargeisa for several years now dee. I think what I need is 6 months or so in the tuuloyin... might spend an entire year or year and a half in Ethiopia in 2015-2016 if funding comes through for me, so hopefully then I'll be able to perfect my Somali *and* Amharic while I'm in the field
  12. Alpha Blondy;989803 wrote: understand afkaaga hooyo first. :p Well excuse me for being born in qurbaha and having never lived back home, you can't rub your fluency in my face  I'm working on it though... but all things considered, I'm pleased with my level of Somali, and the fact I know more languages than you do
  13. thefuturenow;989675 wrote: +1, as in "May I please, pretty please, get a copy of that essay." Also, just give Hawdian your phone number. Save us all the trouble. lool goodness, no I'm nowhere close to finished this essay (in some ways this thread is to cheer myself on lol), but will consider it when I'm done, assuming it isn't crap. Khayr, generally masters and doctoral students don't circulate their essays beyond their classes/professors, occasionally later stage doctoral students revise and publish essays in academic journals. So depending on what topics and disciplines interest you, I'd suggest finding the journals in those fields and reading the work being published in them. Unfortunately most journals and journal databases are not open access and require a library or university login to read, but if you ever come across an article you'd like to read and don't have access to it through a university, just let me know and I'll download it for you.
  14. This one is my favourite, Alpha... reminds me of Addis. Hope to one day understand more than just the gist of songs like this, Amharic is a rich language just like ours. " frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Saffz, are you familiar with the Amharic genre of Tizita ? it's nostalgia music. i'm told Ethiopians, beneath their tough exterior, are sentimental beings. ma ruunba? awesome tune. I love tezeta and Ethio-jazz, especially Mahmoud Ahmed Amharic exam was a breeze, alhamdulillah.
  16. Nin-Yaaban;989772 wrote: You could be right Saff, but the metadata/exif/GPS data coordinates of that picture comes back to specific location. Just for future references, if you are going to post a picture make sure the GPS is disabled on your iPad iOS7. Most image hosting sites don't strip that data. Not Stalking....Just helping. looool I did NOT know this! Just removed the pic, was it so precise to give my address or just a general area? Dang.
  17. Why not guess Boston University, MIT, UMass-Boston, Tufts, or any of the 50+ schools here? I can think of 2-3 other schools in the Boston area with African language offerings, including Somali
  18. It does lool the instructor says my handwriting is good but I think he's just being nice I'm the only person in the intermediate class who doesn't come from an Amharic speaking family, so I feel like he's too easily impressed by my mediocrity lol. Still, my English handwriting is also incomprehensible so I'm just being consistent
  19. Alright off to go fail this thing lol, wish me luck people
  20. Alpha Blondy;989741 wrote: this is the same for Somalilanders and Somalians? No SL/Somalia is different because we are all ethnic Somalis for the most part, one ethnic group with one language whereas Habesha is more of a broad cultural grouping of various but related ethnicities that speak different Semitic languages ie. Amharic, Tigrigna, Guragigna and are primarily Christian. Most Ethiopians (Oromos, Somalis, etc) aren't Habesha but they've dominated power for so long that their culture has become synonymous with Ethiopian nationality
  21. My cousin recently moved to Canada from Ethiopia, and he's currently experiencing his first winter ever, in Alberta of all places. He just posted this on Facebook: "Two day non stop snow, Road, Air port was been closed.Vehicle sink in the snow.Waxaan maraka qarkod dhaha galo la cadabii ayaad u timiid.Sxb iso duceya." Dead lool!!
  22. Nin-Yaaban;989736 wrote: Wanaagsan oo Wacan Alpha. Safferz, they teach Amharic in school now? That's so cool. I wish i could speak that language (and Spanish) since some of the most beautiful Xalimos in this area are from those places. P.S. Many years ago, when i worked at this restaurant we got this couple who came in to pick up their order. And i asked them if they were from Ethiopia. LoL, the guy almost went off on me and said....'NO, I am from Eritrea, not Ethiopian'. So whenever i meet Ethiopians/Eritreans, i always ask 'em them where they are from before i continue on with 'em. They don't teach it everywhere, my uni happens to have a very strong African languages program, you can even take Somali here I might take advanced Somali next semester if I can fit it in (grad students here are allowed to be one person classes), there's still a lot I have left to learn in Somali with technical language, oral literature, etc and the macalin is really good. lool yes Ethiopians and Eritreans are quite nationalist, but Habesha is Habesha so I don't understand why it's offensive when they're still a shared ethnic/cultural group. I get mistaken for Ethiopian on an almost daily basis but I don't get mad
  23. I have my Amharic exam in three hours and I don't feel ready
