They set up the Gacaca courts as a transitional justice system, but I read a paper recently arguing that in practice it's just been a way to throw Hutu people in prison with very little evidence and not allowing them to defend themselves.

I wonder if something modeled after South Africa's truth and reconciliation committees after apartheid could work for us... staged public hearings to bear witness to the various atrocities experienced by Somalis (something that cut across clan and affected everyone in different ways), and grant amnesty to those who publicly admit to their crimes. The emphasis would be national reconciliation and healing by confronting our past, rather than prosecution. Just a thought.

Saffz - what's the girth of your talents, inaar? so daa, dee. p.s - Apo, i think you're wasting your time in debating with Saffz. just my opinion. Alpha, you are the forum equivalent of those aholes in high school who go "OHHHH" when people exchange words on the yard, who then run away when punches start flying.
  6. Apophis;942489 wrote: Nice try at shifting your intellectual inferiority this way, try again. And please, don't flatter yourself with this “ I'm in academia" nonsense. We know how the term has little to no meaning in North America. The evidence being the woeful intellect of exchange students who come to these shores. Highly embarrassing. ... except the United States has the best universities in the world  Wadani;942496 wrote: Lmao. Soodiga inaadeerkaa meesha ku baabiiyay. 7. lmao the Jimmy Kimmel clip didn't appear when I first commented, just watched it now. I've always wanted to go to Coachella for the bands but the dumb hipster crowds are a major turn off. Still, maybe next year...
  8. Apophis;942469 wrote: The whole topic was created simply to give women degrees. It has no academic value and is neither rigorous nor useful in the real world. It's simply another attempt to appease bra burning feminists. Seriously, what insights does "gender studies" offer which isn't apparent to anyone familiar with psychological theories? None. Of course that isnt to say you won't find a job (entirely unrelated to the topic of course) but meh. I'm not getting into this debate, but I think it's fair to say I've gotten a much better education than you have as a gender studies major, judging by the quality of your posts and depth of your thinking. If it had no academic value, I wouldn't be in academia now.
  9. Apophis;942436 wrote: That gender studies degree hasn't been as useful as you'd hoped has it in the real world? Hey, don't knock gender studies grads. I'm doing alright

  11. Back for a quick update -- abo says it's a short Sayyid Mohamed poem, and it's missing the line "misa waan idin sudhee sidaydii," meaning I will kill you with my spear if you don't leave. He said the Sayyid figured out that 8 men were in a plot to assassinate him, and he composed this gabay to let them know that he knows their plan.

This is Massachusetts, after all. Ernie and Bert dee
  14. I miss that city Hargeisa is correct, but still not abo's uhh... *ancestral* hometown.
  15. Hoyo's hometown and abo's adopted one since childhood. Getting warmer
  16. Alpha Blondy;942157 wrote: interesting convo. sometime not commenting is good. thanks y'all. I missed this somehow, a serious, non-trolly comment from Alpha. Alright then, waan ku saamaxay inaar
  17. Ah, never heard the word before, thanks. I didn't know the word for baby turkey either until I just looked it up, apparently they're called "poults" But no, I haven't seen them... I'm sure they wouldn't be as friendly if they had their young around, wild turkeys are known to attack people.

  19. I wanted to introduce you all to the two turkeys who live on my street, I've named them Thing 1 and Thing 2. I believe they're a couple because they're usually together or never too far apart. I like them because like me, they give no f*cks whatsoever. We've also been through a lot together now as neighbours for the last 9 months, and I've taken to photographing them on my cell whenever I see them around. Fall 2012 After Hurricane Sandy: After they survived Thanksgiving: After the blizzard/Snowmageddon: And after the Boston bombing, clearly not giving a f*ck (I was concerned when I couldn't find them, and then I looked up):
