  2. The Somaliland King Is Truly Naked Nairobi (HAN) March 12th, 2007 - The arrests of Gabobe and Dini took place after armed Somaliland police and CID forces who originally came to arrest Haatuf editor Dini and reporter Farah, forced their way into HMN offices without legal warrant or court summons. The Somaliland Journalists, Yusuf Abdi Gabobe and editor of Haatuf Daily, Ali Abdi Dini, were arrested on 2 Jan 2007 over a series of articles written by Haatuf investigative reporter Farah and published in Haatuf Daily from November 2006 to January 2007. The articles exposed corruption and nepotism by President Dahir Rayale and his household The Somaliland political analyst, Mohamud Tani: The President got afraid of a story. He wanted to take the journalist to prison. The Editor of the paper said NO WAY. The president got very frightened. He sent both the reporter and the editor to jail. Another reporter took pictures linked to the story. The president got out of his wits with fear. He sent two other reporters to the CID. The president could not trust the press law. He could not trust the CID detention centre. He could not trust the lieu of the court. He opted for a remote prison, out of the public site. There, in the middle of the jailers and prison guards the court had to listen to the case and sentence the journalists. The president was even so afraid of what he did that he timed the sentence on a date that he was away from the country on an important mission. The irony of the matter is that he needed not to be afraid at all. If he made a mistake; if he became a little angry after someone has crossed a gentlemanly line and insulted his wife. If he became angry about that, I won’t blame him. If the anger caused that he loses his mind and puts the alleged culprit in prison. All he needed to do was just to calm down, rectify his mistake, release the journalist, and deal the matter in a civilized way. He need not be afraid and play hide and seek with the public. As far as this incident of HAATUF is concerned , every Somalilander sees that this time the KING IS TRUELY NAKED. In life if you lose that sense of proportionality, you end up being a loser. Compare this: When the story was first published, there was a considerable anger, sadness and disappointment at the dinner table of the president's home. Everybody at the table did not see the story as fair. Well I also agree it was below the belt. Though from my own point of view someone at that level of power should expect something like this and worse from the Media. Anyway the story caused headaches, uneasiness and irritation at the President’s home. However, when the president reacted to make his own move in reply to what has been done to his family. He took the journalists to jail. That caused havoc at the dinner tables of the journalists’ families. If somebody makes your wife and your kids irritated and angry by insulting them, would you reply by making their wives and children weep? That is quite out of proportion. I would not have blamed the President, had he walked into the Haatuf office and bunched somebody in the nose. That is a gentlemanly way to protect the dignity of your family. What is unacceptable, as far as I am concerned is to get even with somebody by using the power of your office. That is quite unmanly and despicable. I am a member of the UDUB party, and I so far support the presidency of Mr. Rayale. However we should not be silent and be party to an action that is blatantly wrong and mismanaged. Prophet Mohamed said. "Support your brother both when he is a victim and when he is the oppressor". The companions were surprised and said 'Oh dear prophet Mohamed. We understand to support him when is the victim, how can we support him when he is the oppressor.". The prophet replied, "Oh my companions, if you stop him from making the oppression, that is like supporting him" I therefore beseech President Rayale to face his problems like a man. Not to react with the mood of his household. It is the whole nation that he is responsible for. There is nothing you should be afraid of if you act with fairness and common sense. Otherwise only you would be the one that reaps the whirlwind of your less than gallant actions. 3. Somaliland: Ethiopia has been seen as the big sister Nairobi (HAN) March 12th, 2007 - It is evident that Ethiopia and Somaliland have been enjoying progressive and positive relations for more than 15 years. For many Somaliland people, Ethiopia has been seen as the 'big sister.' However, the 'big sister' mentality is now in serious trouble; Somaliland people are finding it difficult reconciling their attitude towards Ethiopia and the inconsiderate and unbalancing act of the Ethiopian government. The regional political analysts writes: Ethiopia's position in regards to the recognition of Somaliland continues to be on hold now for some years, at times, giving away the' issue to what could evolve with the peace talks in the south. At one time, PM Meles Zenawi was quoted as saying in a press conference that the case of Somaliland recognition should be done through dialogue among Somalis only. But all the same, when Somaliland leadership happened to meet the Ethiopian leadership, for that matter the Prime Minister, they came out very upbeat about the positive gesture given by the Ethiopian peers towards recognizing their country as an independent state. However, during the 8th African Union (AU) Summit last month when Somaliland's recognition issue was raised and discussed among other agendas, Ethiopia played complacent on the issue, failing to give the necessary motion to authenticate the issue a qualification for discussion at the summit. No doubt, this move emanates from Ethiopia's preference in not getting entangled with the recognition issue at a time when the situation in Somalia is on the balance. This is being seen as a fatal mistake on the part of Ethiopia as what happens in southern Somalia has nothing to do with Somaliland. Somaliland has been pushing for recognition for the past 16 years and patience can wear thin if the process continues at a 'one step forward two steps backward' pace. It is understandable that Somaliland's recognition could result in uncomfortable diplomatic entanglements for Ethiopia with some of the countries who advocate unity of the status-quo-ante but one cannot see problems in addressing the issue with no preconditions of reaching any decision on the matter. After all what harm could come from discussions on an issue that is long overdue? Ethiopia enjoys favorable relations with Somaliland and in fact some could argue that relations between the two nations have been probably the most stable within the region. Ethiopia continues to use the port of Berbera as an alternative port to the Port of Djibouti, rudimentary levels of diplomatic ties exist between the two nations and collaborations in regards to security and trade exist between the two nations. In fact, it could be concluded that in all matters and purposes Somaliland enjoys the status of a peaceful neighborly nation. Furthermore, the formative years of the "Big Sister" mentality can be traced back to the early 1980s when the military junta of Ethiopia started to support the Somali Liberation Movement (SNM). Ethiopia had also hosted millions of Somaliland refugees when the latter fled following bombardment of towns and persecution by the Siyad Barre regime. These two phenomena were instrumental in shaping the Somaliland public opinion towards Ethiopia. Ethiopia had been there when the people of Somaliland needed it. Here, it should, however, be noted that it was not out of complete, pure altruistic drive that Ethiopia supported Somaliland in those periods. Some of the acts were part and parcel of the politics of mutual destruction waged against each other between the two colonels, Mengistu and Barre. Now, however, Ethiopia's relation with Somaliland is increasingly being jeopardized especially after Ethiopia's recent unparalleled and unbalanced support to the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia and its head, Abdillahi Yusuf. By way of assisting the Mogadishu government and without extending any proportional support to Somaliland, Ethiopia is unconsciously building the muscle of the TFG whose subject of exercise would most probably be Somaliland. The confidence of Somaliland's politicians, intellectuals and the Diaspora at large on Ethiopia's will to recognize Somaliland is growing very thin. A Somalilander critic from Diaspora soon after the last AU summit put it "Make no mistake that our relationship with Sister Ethiopia is a natural one. But at present it is at its lowest ebb because only one hand is clapping." A message in circulation from Somaliland Diaspora argues, " Ethiopia's policy toward the former territories of the defunct Somali Dem. Republic has never been clear. It has been always shrouded with tentativeness and ambiguity to say the least." This, according to the writer, is a mechanism to avoid the daylight so as to defy clarity and as such considered as "long on tactical maneuvers and short on strategic objectivity. The situation seems to have angered many Somalilanders and dampened their enthusiasm towards the Ethiopian political echelon's slow pace to realize their dreams. Obviously, it is now time for the government of Ethiopia to take some immediate and serious measures to regain the trust of the Somaliland people. Otherwise, Somaliland may be lost to other opportunistic countries who have tried to win the hearts and souls of the Somali people through different angle- through the support of the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC). A scenario at hand is that Eritrea, Djibouti, along with some northern African countries had supported the UIC and advocated its legitimacy to unite and rule a united Somalia. Now that the UIC is defeated, another wave of political intrigue is on the making. Djibouti's leadership is calling upon Somalilanders fomenting a rumor that Ethiopia would in the long run chop-off part of the Awdal region to gain access to port city of Zeila and that Somalilanders should not trust Ethiopia. Furthermore, a president of one of the Horn countries has already told Somalilanders that they should not "prostitute" with Ethiopia for the sake of recognition. He let them know that the long awaited recognition may come from Eritrea. One can see the glide of the same groups who some months back advocated for the unity of Somalis and act as the torchbearers for the international recognition just to antagonize Ethiopia. Ethiopia cannot afford the luxury of losing a strategic and 'Little Sister' amidst hostile neighbors and neighborhood. What measures can Ethiopia take to win back Somalilanders? Well, one immediate measure would be to send high level Ethiopian government delegation to Hargeisa to demonstrate to Somaliland people that Ethiopia would act like a big and caring sister. To say the least, Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin should lead a high-level delegation to visit the Somaliland capital, Hargeisa to boost the relations as he is shuttling between Addis Ababa and the TFG's head office in Baidoa. Such move would mitigate the ever-increasing mistrust by Somalilanders on Ethiopian government and is tantamount to confidence building and restoration measure. The second and the perfect thing to do is to overcome the national hypocrisy of self righteousness. The Ethiopian government should stop saying, " Ethiopia should not be viewed as the partitioning force of the defunct Somali republic." Ethiopia has already been labeled as that "Partitioning Force"; the majority of Somalis in the south, including prominent leaders within the TFG, see Ethiopia as the devil that is primarily responsible for the collapse and disintegration of the old Somali republic. Moreover, you cannot divide what is already divided, you cannot separate what has already been separated; whether Ethiopia recognizes Somaliland or not, a partition has already been in effect. The greater Somalia concept is long gone and it is going to be hell of a futile trial to put them back into a unity. If such an effort is exerted, it would be a good effort to plunge the region into permanent chaos. Another hypocrisy Ethiopia should overcome is its unwillingness to translate the constitutional pillar principle of self-determination. It is a fact that this principle holds special place in the Ethiopian constitution; its position is elevated when the incumbent told the whole world that it is this principle alone that sustains Ethiopia as one country. Besides, it had given this opportunity to one state in the region. So, why doesn't it advocate for this principle to be considered in the AU forum? One more thing Ethiopia can do is to use a weapon in its arsenal called recognition before it expires. In the world of international politics, which has close resemblance to realist's interpretation of it, recognition is an important arsenal. Old and established countries are endowed with the privilege of according recognition to a nascent state because it is their mere act of recognition that would give the birth certificate for the latter. Old states consider their ability to extend recognition as an asset that can be exchanged for something meaningful in market of international politics. The life of any new state is doomed to be difficult, if not impossible, without that birth certificate though the fact remains that the certificate has nothing to do with the factual existence of the state. Ethiopia 's capacity to recognize Somaliland is an arsenal only as long as it is the first country to use it. It is like "use it first or lose it." The makers and executives of Ethiopian foreign policy should reckon that once other hostile regimes lost their ground in Somalia, then they may resort to the " Somaliland window." Unlikely countries may become the first to grant recognition to Somaliland for pragmatic political reasons. This why they say politics is the art of the possible. 4. Xiin, why utter half-truths, as the one-liner-simpletons do, or bark like a spiteful ignorant, adeer? I doubt that you are that detective to the degree that you are unable to give intellectual backing to your assertions! Although, Your insults don’t even warrant a response I choose to respond in a civilized manner You broke the following golden rules; 3 - Language: do not use profanity, vulgarity or objectionable language. 7 - Flaming: absolutely no personal attacks (direct or indirect). Criticize ideas, not people. Flaming will not be tolerated in any way. I am not at all safe from the gravity of partisanship toward a creed or opinion. That’s not the issue I guess for you having an opinion means insulting others, But I tell you having an opinion is fine, and insulting those who have different opinion is unacceptable Don’t confuse yourself between the two You can be dedicated supporter of ICU, and still debate in a courteous manner if you don’t know that when he threw one line remark and walked away without elaboration. Still, you cannot justify your insults are uncalled-for The length of my contribution is entirely my business if you are unconvinced, you could have asked for more clarification in a respectful manner Many people have accused Indhacadde of atrocious crimes and pointed out his background as a powerful warlord who forcefully ruled southern communities that lacked military muscle to defend themselves. That’s a known fact, and I am not in any form or shape disputing it. You see even you ( ICU supporter)admitted that Indhacadde is a warlord I have said basically Indhacade is a warlord like Qanyare or Muuse Suudi – a simple fact that even children can comprehend the ICU failed because they were allied with notorious warlords "Facts don't cease to exist because they are ignored" Most Somali people including myself welcomed the ICU thinking that they were Islamic movement; unfortunately actions didn’t match the empty banners But to suggest that one man has downed an entire entity is quite a leap, One man can tarnish the reputation of a whole group that’s a simple and commonsense, having a warlord like indhcadde tells volumes about nature of ICU 32. On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Then although there came to them Our apostles with clear signs, yet, even after that, many of them continued to commit excesses in the land. A woman of the Makhzoom family with good connections was found guilty of theft. For the prestige of the Quraish, some prominent people including Asama Bin Zaid interceded to save her from punishment. The Prophet (pbuh) refused to condone the crime and expressed displeasure saying, "Many a community ruined itself in the past as they only punished the poor and ignored the offences of the exalted. By Allah, if Muhammad's (My) daughter Fatima would have committed theft, her hand would have been severed." (Bukhari, Sahh Bukhari, Chapter "Alhadood") Omar and the Egyptian: Unparalleled Justice A man from the Copts(1) came to Omar ibn al-Khattab(2) in Al-Madinah(3), and said, “O Commander of the Faithful! I seek refuge in you from oppression.” Omar replied, “You have sought refuge where it is to be sought.” The Egyptian said, “I was racing the son of `Amr ibn al-`Aas(4), and defeated him. Then he began to beat me with a whip saying: I am the Son of Nobles!” So Omar wrote to `Amr commanding him to appear before him with his son. So they appeared before him. Omar inquired, “Where is the Egyptian? He is to take the whip and beat him!” Then the Egyptian began to beat the son of `Amr with the whip as `Umar said to him, “Beat the Son of Nobles!” Anas said, “So he beat him. I swear by Allah, as he was beating him we pitied his wailing. He did not desist until we stopped him.” Then Omar said to the Egyptian, “Now beat the whip upon `Amr’s bald head!” He replied, “O Commander of the Faithful! For it was his son who beat me, and I have evened the score with him.” Upon this Omar said to `Amr, “Since when do you enslave the people when their mothers bore them as free men?” He said, “O Commander of the Faithful! I was unaware of this, and he did not come to me (for justice).” Reference: Seerah Omar ibn al-Khattab, Ibn Abdi-l Hakam; Kanzu-l `Ummaal, al-Hindi; Rabee`u-l Abraar, al-Zamakhshari Translated by: Shibli Zaman Xiinow hadal haan ma buusho, “I might show facts as plain as day: but, since your eyes are blind, you'd say, "Where? 7. desperate times require desperate measures World does not respect the freedom and human rights of Somaliland Hargeisa (HAN) March 7th, 2007 - Another ugly chapter of the Haatuf saga opened on Feb.27 when Somaliland’s Supreme Court handed down a ruling against Haatuf newspaper and in favor of the government. The most important point in the court’s decision was that Haatuf would be tried using Somalia’s Penal Code rather than Somaliland’s Press Law. The defendants were Yusuf A. Gabobe (the editor of Somaliland Times), Ali Dini (the editor of Haatuf) and Mohammed Omar Sheikh (Haatuf correspondent in Awdal). The Horn of African Journalist Association (HAJA): han@geeskaafrika.com The Somaliland writer, Abdirahman Maxamed (Haadka): As I write this article, many news makers are copy pasting from Somaliland's media that four journalists have been sentenced for "insulting" the first lady. Despite this unhappy ending, I congratulate Somaliland's media for reaching this high level of controversy and I thank everyone helping Somaliland to finally reach the paramount of freedom of speech. Having that said, I like to focus on the most ironic scene of this sad catastrophe which no one has noticed. Have you wondered why the news of sentencing journalists in democratic Somaliland is mentioned in newspapers like al Khaleej from UAE, a country where all media is owned or controlled by the government? I also wonder since when did the world care about Somaliland? How dare they ask us to be fully democratic, free and respect human rights when the world does not respect the freedom and the human rights of Somaliland by denying its existence and quest for international recognition? Riyale has jailed four men; sure that is a sad development. However, what about putting 4 million people in the jail of being ignored and unrepresented? Somaliland has everything any nation has and more for quite number of years now. So, If you are journalist, we don’t want you to care about those in the small jail, I sure you it’s the same outside. At least now there are recognized internationally as the poor journalists! Finally I conclude this message advising the Somaliland government to cancel all elections, kill these four so called journalists, sell drugs to ships who cross the international Gulf of Aden, welcome terrorism and build centers for children sexual exploration. If we are not welcomed in the right world and got sentenced for nothing but being ourselves, lets move on to the other world where Osama bin laden and Israel will welcome us with open arms. Last week, the president of the self declared Republic in North Somalia his Excellency Dahir Riyale Kahin was ordered to Addis where he met the Prime Minster of Ethiopia, ex-comrade Meles Zenawi. Little is known about the out come or issues discussed in that meeting between the ex-Somalia intelligence officer and the Ethiopian ex-stone age communist. However, Mr. Riyale told journalists in Addis that his secessionist ghetto in Hargeisa applauds sincerely for the Ethiopian Military intervention in South Somalia but he unprofessionally demented that statement after his arrival in Hargeisa. Nevertheless, more interesting and strange enough is the fact that the whole secessionist political elite in the second city of Somalia agreed this time to organise all of sudden demonstrations against what they call Mbagath government in Mogadishu. At this point, one can say in Hargeisa the time is obviously standing still. The TFG is not in Mbagath but in Mogadishu more than two years after Mbagath. The demonstrations which have been propagated in Hargeisa soon after Mr. Riyale returned from Addis calls for many questions. What exactly did the Ethiopians told Mr. Riyale so that the secessionist clique started to manipulate the people and brought them to demonstrate in the streets of Hargeisa or San Diego? What caused this panic demonstration in Hargeisa? Are the Ethiopians playing a double game with the amateur politicians in North Somalia? The demonstration in Hargeisa was orchestrated by Mr. Mohamed Selah Nor (Fagare), Festal Ali Warabe, Ahmed Yusuf Yasin, who are members of the opposition and the Governing party, respectively. However, the most remarkable statement during the demonstration was made by Mr. Fagare from the Kulmiye opposition party. In his speech, Mr. Fagare particularly addressed the Somali youth in Hargeisa and he told them not to believe that Ethiopians are their enemy. The professional opposition justified his statement to his audience mostly women and children by saying that Ethiopians supported his people (what ever he means with that) while they were struggling against the later Said Barre Dictatorial regime. At this point, Mr. Fagare missed to admit the fact that the Ethiopia of today is not the Ethiopia of the tyrant Mengistu Haile Mariam who supported Fagade people. At that time, the Tigrayan Liberation Front (TLF) lead by Meles Zenawi was exactly struggling against the tyrannical despot Mr. Mengistu. However, Mr. Fagare was literally telling the young Somalis in Hargeisa that his people were supported by an Ethiopian tyrant. What a shame and I doubt that Meles Zenawi will be happy about the glorification of the Mengistu bloody era. However, the winners of the political struggle in Ethiopia (TLF) are living today in peace and harmony with their brothers and sisters in such a huge multi-ethical country after 30 years of arm struggle. In contrary to that, the winners of the Somalia political struggle in Hargeisa, the Somali National Movement (SNM) have nothing else to do rather then to organise primitive clan based demonstration against South Somalia. Let us call a spade a spade, these days demonstrations in Hargeisa manifests only the political interest of a short sighted political revengists in the region and they are only struggling for a nothing more than clan dominated Republic in North Somalia. During the 16 bloody years in South Somalia, present political actors in Hargeisa believed with out any scruple that a continuous bombing, killing and chaos in South Somalia will bring them every day closer to their virtual Republic. During the long tragic agony in south Somalia and the brutal warlordism, politicians in Hargeisa never organised a single humanitarian demonstration from their peaceful homes against the genocide in South Somalia. In the contrary, day in day out, political demagogies in Hargeisa were telling the people in North Somalia that the whole Somalia people in the South where responsible for the brutal killings of thousands of innocent people in Hargeisa by the Military regime in Somalia . More worst, is the fact that Hargeisa amateur politician and opportunists, irresponsibly mistranslated the heroic Somali national struggle in Hargeisa against Barre regime into a backward clan struggle or even into anti-South Somali political movement (ASSPM). That irresponsible altitude damaged undisputable the historical national respect and recognition for those who lost their lives for the liberation of Somalia against the Military dictatorship. As we all know, our people in South Somalia are in a very serious and critical situation but the corrupted and fake Mujahiden in Hargeisa has nothing else to do as to launch propaganda campaign against TFG and all hopes and dreams for a long lasting peace solution in Mogadishu and Somalia. However, can we say that that kind of political behaviour in Hargeisa justifies to say North Somalia’s secessionist movements are missing the old bloody days in Mogadishu because they are afraid of a peaceful and successful Government operations in the South which might minimize their chance to get an independent Republic in North Somalia?. Following that and if that is the case, will it be fair or unfair to categorize the political actors in Hargeisa as sadists? In case the TFG manages to disarm all the clan Militia and take peacefully control over the whole South Somalia , the rebuilding of our country needs all brilliant men and women technocrats from the North who are now vegetating unemployed in the streets of Borama, Hargeisa Burao, Lasanood, Berbera etc.. Having said that, the secessionist propaganda against the weak and at the mean time very busy TFG shows the fear of the coming mass exodus from the Ghettoes in the North to the wider and big part of our country. No doubt, a peaceful South Somalia will attract many Somalis from the North who would like to visit again where they used to work, where their children were born, friends and relatives. Perhaps the politicians in Hargeisa are really feeling that fantastic scenario and it created a horrifying panic within the secessionists establishment. Therefore, the new panic propaganda and demonstrations in Hargeisa are literally the last kicks of dieing horse. Finally, The TFG politicians are known for their brilliant political strategy but it will not wise to provoke more political panic in North Somalia. Osman Samatar
