Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed takes an exclusive interview with China's Xinhua News Agency in Mogadishu, capital of Somali, Feb. 21, 2010. More supports from the international community for Somalia's transitional government were needed to solve the country's prolonged and complicated crisis, said the president in the interview on Sunday. (Xinhua/Liu Chan) MOGADISHU, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- More supports from the international community for Somalia's transitional government were needed to solve the country's prolonged and complicated crisis, Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed said on Sunday in an exclusive interview with Xinhua. "The international community gives us (the transitional government) many support, but is not as much as we expect. But still we are thankful, and (the support is) helpful to us," Ahmed said. The president said he took office at the hardest time for Somalia, and since then his administration has been exerting continuous efforts to push for reconciliation of the country's warring sides. "To make Somalia peaceful is a big responsibility and we have taken a number of tasks in talking and communicating to them (the warring sides) the importance of peace and to take part in peace," Ahmed said. However, as time goes by, the situation in the Horn of Africa country has become far more complicated than could be expected, he said. "When the central government of the Republic of Somalia lost in the 1990s, different ideology came to grow and created problems in Somalia," said the president. Somalia has been plagued by civil strife since the overthrow of military strongman Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991. The nation of about 8 million people has had no effective government for almost two decades. Ahmed, a moderate Islamist, was elected president of the transitional government in January 2009 by the expanded Somali parliament following UN-brokered peace talks. Islamist insurgent groups, which now control almost the entire south and central Somalia except for a small part of the restive capital Mogadishu, have been mounting deadly attacks against forces of the transitional government and the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), causing heavy casualty in troops and civilians. The fragile government faced the deadliest single suicide attack on its rank on Dec. 3 last year, when three senior ministers and dozens of civilians were killed in a suicide bomb explosion that struck a graduation ceremony at a hotel in a government-controlled area in southern Mogadishu. Earlier this month, State Minister Yusuf Mohamed Siyad Indha Adde survived a suicide car bomb attack, in which at least five people were killed and more than 14 others, including two of Adde's bodyguards, were wounded, also in the government-controlled area in the capital city. Meanwhile, the piracy problem in Somalia, partly resulting from the country's anarchy, was also a big headache for the government, the president said. "Piracy is a major problem we are facing because they can earn money from those ships, because they can use it for unlawful activities that create problems..." said Ahmed. Somalia is going through a difficult time, Ahmed said. A strong government could not be established without strong and effective support from the international community, he added. "We are still young. We need more help to grow up soon," said the president.

Somali leader welcomes US military support By Paul Peachey Somalia's president yesterday welcomed any US military involvement in a long-awaited offensive in his country aimed at driving Islamist rebels from the capital. During a visit to London, President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed said US air support would help his troops to seize areas of Mogadishu as he seeks to enlarge his weak government's tiny power base. Separately, President Ahmed failed to raise hopes of an early release for a British couple held by Somali pirates. Paul Chandler, 60, and his wife, Rachel, 56, were kidnapped four months ago while sailing through the Indian Ocean. Gordon Brown, in meetings on Monday, urged Somali officials to redouble efforts to secure their release. "We are talking to elders in this community, to the intellectuals ... We have made significant progress," the President told reporters. However, the control of his weak UN-backed government does not even extend to the edge of the capital in the face of continued attacks by extremist groups including the most active, al-Shabaab. Somali government forces have shared plans with the US about the coming military offensive, according to The New York Times. The US has its own history of humiliating involvement in the country. US forces pulled out when Somali militia killed soldiers on a humanitarian mission in 1993. "Our forces have prepared well and can do the job of securing the areas," President Ahmed said yesterday. "If the US government provides us with support, air support, it will help the situation," he added. Al-Shabaab, which seeks to impose a strict version of Muslim law in the country, has vowed to defend itself against any government offensive. The group's spokesman, Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage, said that "America can do nothing to us - it will face something worse" than its 1993 failure. After years of civil war, even small achievements would be welcome. "If they were able to get a majority of Mogadishu under their control, they would consider that pretty successful," said Roger Middleton of the Chatham House think-tank.

Gordon Brown pledged British support for the transitional government of Somalia yesterday as its Western-backed president prepared to launch an offensive to seize control of Mogadishu from al-Qaeda linked fighters. by Damien McElroy, Foreign Affairs Correspondent Published: 4:22PM GMT 09 Mar 2010 Britain has offered £5.7 million to fund the build-up of an official Somalian security force and has dramatically increased British aid to Somalia tenfold to £30 million since Sheikh Sharif Ahmed was installed as president last year. President Ahmed said he welcomed foreign support as he targets al-Shabaab, the fundamentalist movement that has appealed for British Somalis to train as suicide bombers. Gen Mohammad Gelle Kahiye. the commander of the Somali forces, revealed last week that the Americans are "helping us" with drone operations and air strikes in a Mogadishu offensive to be launched this month. A US official told the New York Times that special forces would be "moving in, hitting and getting out." President Ahmed said yesterday his forces needed help to conduct operations on the ground. "If the US government provides us with the air support, it will help the situation," he said. The struggling forces are heavily dependent on foreign assistance to carry out the assault. Kenya is widely reported to have trained 2,500 men selected from refugee camps at the Manyani Kenya Wildlife camp on its northern coast. In addition to cash for African Union forces, Britain has provided advisers to commanders establishing the new Somali army. The writ of the Transitional Federal Government barely extends beyond the boundaries of the presidential compound, Villa Somalia and bases maintained by United Nations and African peacekeepers. Al Shabaab control most of the capital and central and south Somalia. President Ahmed has told Western officials that his government plans to push back his enemy "block by block." Key targets of the offensive are the University and Bakara market, which are dominated by al-Shabaab, the key al-Qaeda ally in Somalia. Western intelligence reports estimate that as many as 70 British residents travelled to Somalia for jihadist training in the last year. British officials opposed the election of President Ahmed over suspicions of his background as a leader of the Islamic Courts, a militia that was ousted by the US-backed Ethiopian army in 2006. But President Ahmed used his religious credentials to appeal to British Somalis reject the fundamentalists. ""I want to prevent people from using religion for their own purposes," he told Chatham House, the London think tank. "We do not have this concept of suicide in the holy books. I urge my people to look, it is not there."

US commander backs bid for Mogadishu (AFP) – WASHINGTON — A senior US military officer voiced support Tuesday for efforts by the Somali government to take control of the capital Mogadishu, saying it could help ease the country's chronic instability. Mogadishu and other parts of central and southern Somalia under insurgent control have been bracing for a major offensive by the government and the African Union peacekeeping mission, known as AMISOM. General William Ward, the head of the US Africa Command, told a Senate hearing that the operation to retake Mogadishu was "a work in progress." "To the degree the transitional federal government can in fact re-exert control over Mogadishu, with the help of AMISOM and others, I think is something that we would look to do in support," Ward testified. He declined to give more details but reaffirmed US support for the transitional government of President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, a moderate Islamist. Insurgent movements include the Shebab, which has ties to Al-Qaeda. The government "has for now our best potential for helping to turn around some of the instability and lack of governance that we've experienced there," Ward said. Somalia has lacked an effective government for nearly two decades. President Barack Obama's administration has stepped up support for the transitional government, sending it weapons since last year to help fend off the Shebab. The New York Times, quoting an unnamed official, reported last week that US special operations forces could help the Somali government dislodge militants from Mogadishu. Many Americans remain haunted by the last US intervention in Somalia which began as a relief operation to avert famine in the early 1990s. In October 1993, forces loyal to warlord Mohamed Farah Aidid killed 18 US soldiers, dragging some of their bodies through the streets.

Northern Somali Unionist Movement (NSUM) Farah Maalin Denying The Undeniable Northern Somali Unionist Movement (NSUM) Press Release March 08, 2010 __________________ Farah Maalin is a household name in Kenya and perhaps the rest of the Somali-inhabited territories in the Horn. Until his election to Kenya's parliament and appointment as the deputy speaker, he oozed an air of a man who held deep attachment for the good of Somalis and their unity, something that had warmed many hearts desperate for good Somali Samaritans. Unfortunately, he fell from his much admired pedestal when he paid an unexpected and ill-advised trip to Somaliland at which time he endorsed Somaliland's invasion and occupation of the regions of Sool, Sanaag and Cayn (Cayn) and signalled his approval of their secession from Somalia. While the TFG and the rest of Somalia paid little attention to this provocative visit, a stance from which the secessionists drew much needed comfort, the SSC people for their part, at home and abroad, took great exception to this stab behind their back by someone they hitherto thought to be true believer in Somalia's unity and the peaceful co-existence of its warring clans and factions. Despite the initial shock following his trip, there was hope that Farah Maalin will come to his senses, repair the damage he caused to the SSC people and Somalia, and turn a new page. Far from doing so, he was at it again in an interview with the BBC Somali Service recetly in which he defended not only his misguided visit to Somaliland but unbelievably claimed that an SSC welcoming part escorted him from Burcao all the way to Lascanod and that he was given a rousing welcome in Lascanod itself. While we concede that some individuals hailing from the SSC regions accompanied him from Hargeisa, it is disingenuous on his part to portray them as typical of the SSC people. What he failed to add was that these were turncoats and quislings in the pay of Somaliland who are resident in Hargeisa. Truth is something in short supply when it comes to all politicians of all stripes and Farah Maalin is no excepton. But he went over the top when, in his vain attempt to put a brave face on his non-existent reception, he made the totally baseless claim that he was given a tumultuous reception in Lascaond!. Suffice to say that the locals could not have warmed up to someone from another country of whom they knew nothing as a person and also about the purpose of his visit. Those who escorted him were the same people accompanying from Hargeisa, or Somaliland's security forces in the occupied city. One has to ask what Farah Maalin is to gain from such blatant, barefaced and persistent propaganda on behalf of Somaliland, its secession and occupation of other parts of Somalia If there is one solace that the SSC people can draw from the undeserved wronging they incurred at the hands of Farah Maalin, it is the intervention of Kenya's foreign minister who is now calling for Maalin's impeachment for his statements and actions during his trip to Somaliland. It is ironic, and it is much appreciated, that he should put Farah Maalin in his place when our own government, and above all its president, prime minister, foreign minister and its ambassador in Nairobi, have all united in maintaining silence, believing perhaps that they can weather the storm by putting their heads in the sand. True to their Darwiish heritage, the SSC people will throw out the invaders from their territory now matter how long it takes and preserve Somalia's unity. Farah Maalin support for Somaliland will come to nothing and will only be remembered for what is- a misguided self-serving mission which in the end will come to haunt him. NSUM Excecutive Committee

Somali Leader Says Al Shabaab's WFP Ban Worsens Hunger Somali President Sheikh Sharif sheikh Ahmed on Thursday said the banning of the operations of the UN's food agency in Somalia by the insurgent group of Al Shabaab further deteriorates the humanitarian situation in the war-torn country. The Islamist rebel movement which is fighting Somali government forces late last month ordered the World Food Program (WFP) to terminate its operations in Somalia accusing the agency of being "anti-Islamic". "The hunger in many parts of the country is further made worse by the refusal of anti-government groups for aid to reach those in need," the president told reporters in a press conference at his residence in Mogadishu. The Somali leader also said the differences between WFP and the U.S. over aid deliveries to Somalia would also obstruct humanitarian operation in war wrecked nation. The U.S. says aid for the displaced Somalis could go into the hands of Islamist insurgent forces controlling much of south and center of Somalia while WFP accused the U.S. of "politicizing aid". Speaking about the ships and their crews still held hostage by Somali pirates, the Somali head of sate said the vessels and crews should be released "immediately and unconditionally", saying the piracy was "un-Islamic, immoral and criminal". President Ahmed reminded the international community that foreign naval forces patrolling the pirate-infested Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden was not enough to stop the menace, saying the rebuilding of the Somali national institutions were necessary for better fighting piracy on land. The Somali President reiterated his call for rebels opposed to his government, which now controls only parts of Mogadishu under the protection of African Union peacekeepers, to dialogue with the government. Islamist insurgent groups, which now control almost the entire south and central Somalia except for a small part of the restive capital, have been mounting deadly attacks against forces of the transitional government and the African Union Mission in Somalia , causing heavy casualty in troops and civilians. In February, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported that nearly 20,000 people were driven from their homes in Mogadishu by renewed fighting between government forces and opposition groups. Somalia has been plagued by civil strife since the overthrow of military strongman Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.

Somali President Welcomes Britain's Decision to Outlaw Al Shabab By Shafi'i Mohyaddin Abokar The President of Somali transitional federal government Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed has wholeheartedly welcomed the decision by the UK government that added Somalia's Alqaeda proxy Al shabab into the list of international terrorist groups this week. During a press conference at the presidential palace Thursday president Sheik Sharif said that his government was very happy to hear such a hard decision against Al shabab which the UK government announced this week that it is outlawed in Britain. "Britain's decision to add Al shabab into the list of terrorists was a good step but came late, because there is no doubt that Shababs are terrorists, we are welcoming the move and we are calling on all governments to take such steps against Al shabab" Somali president told a press conference Thursday. Meanwhile the president has strongly condemned the ban by Al shabab on aid agencies including the world Food program which the group banned from operating in Somalia and threatened to kill everyone who works with the world food agency. "Somali people are dying and they need international assistance so the group's barbaric restriction against WFP shows that terrorists are committed to destroying the lives of all Somalis" he stated. Leaders of Al shabab which was already put on the list of terrorist organizations by the US government said in the past that they are very happy to be included into the list and vowed to continue fighting until they govern the entire world under their Taliban-style Islamic rule. In 2006 the group was the military wing of the Somali Islamic courts Union which defeated the once powerful warlords in the second half of the year before they were ousted by joint Ethiopian-Somali government forces late December 2006. Wars in the restive capital alone have engulfed the lives of more than 21,000 Somalis mainly civilians and displaced more than 1.5 million others from their homes in Mogadishu. The United Nations is saying that more than 3.5 million people in Somalia, about half of the country's total population need emergency life-saving food aid. Somalia hasn't had a functioning central government since the 1991 downfall of the former military government of the late dictator General Mohamed Siyad Bare. Wars and famine have killed more than half a million people since then. - - - Shafi'i Mohyaddin Abokar is the NewsBlaze Somalia reporter. Contact him through NewsBlaze.

It is outrageous that a politician like Faysal Ali Warabe makes a jibe against one of most respected diplomat in Africa, Kenyan foreign Minister Moses Wetangula. He described him to be “Illegitimate son” which is most degrading insult in Somali Culture. Mr Waraabe is the leader of the opposition party for the self-declared republic of Somali-land, which no state has recognized since 1991 although they have made every attempt to destabilize southern Somalia by sending money and weapons. Mr Faysal was commenting the case against Faarh Moalim, deputy of Kenyan Parliament having made a recent visit in Northern Somalia in December and made a speech which many pro-secessionist translated to open the door for separatism and nationalists. This may have serious back lash in Kenya where many different ethnic group form the country. This prompted the Kenyan Foreign Minster to ask the House of Parliament to investigate Mr Farah’s action behind his visit and the damage he may have inflicted to millions of Somali people. The remark of Mr Waraabe shows how low grade they are in politics and need to understand that Kenya has no magic keys for recognition but they must speak to their fellow Somalis and settle with their political ambition quarrels. It is also imperative to mention that so called Somali-land militia has been terrorizing innocent civilians in Sool, Sanaag (SSC) and Ayn regions without any regards to human rights.
