The Birth of A Resistance Movement: The Case of SSC The massacre and torture of civilians gave a birth to a Resistance Movement: the case of SSC regions Since the day the British defeated the Darwish Movement the people of SSC were condemned and forced to be obedient to any administration whether colonial nor non-colonial one. Their territory was divided after the Somali independence in July 1960 within the Republic into three regional administrations – Nugal (Garowe), Sanag (Erigavo) and Togdheer (Buroa) and part of their land was in 1954 handed over to the Ethiopians as a Reserve Area. It was only in the end of 70s in the last century that the then Somali Military Government announced the new region of Sool – the first administrative region of the *********** people- due to the pressure of the Children of the Darwish, that it is time to change the regulations set by the British colonial administration to divide the people of the Darwish and the status quo followed by the Somali administration from 1960 onwards. The area inhabited by the *********** social group remained unchanged since 1920s. There was no economical social input into the regions. The British colonial administration has after 1921 imposed the people of SSC head taxes – not to draw the *********** into menial employment for cash as they did in other colonised people in Africa – but the sole purpose to deprive them from their basic resources, which was livestock. This deprivation and negligence of the *********** territories was compensated by all the administrations from the colonial time to the present day through the integration of some individuals from the area into the political elite. Economical and regional development is far more important than having few individuals in the power centre of the establishment. And that is exactly what these regions have experienced. After the collapse of the Somali state in 1990 every clan organised their people and allowed the traditional leaders to lead them. In this aspect the people of Sool, Sanag and Cayn extended their hands to their neighbouring clans. The people of SSC participated the clan conferences in the northern regions of the country such as those held in Buroa, Boorame and Erigaavo in peace and offered the other participants a peaceful co-existence between their people and the others. This reconciliatory offer was interpreted as a weakness by their neighbours and since then the neighbouring clans were advocating and behaving as if they are the sole representative of these regions. In other words the neighbouring clans felt as the winners of the conflict that let the downfall of the last regime. It is important to highlight why these neighbours see the regions of SSC as regions to be administered? The people of the north-western regions and the people of the eastern regions did fight against the late central government through their armed wings of SNM and SSDF. On the other side the people of SSC were according to these mentioned regions defined as loyal to the central government of Somalia due to the individuals integrated into the power centre of the administration, therefore they do believe it is their right to dominate and run the affair of these regions and its people. This political thinking was pushed to the extent that the territory of the SSC people should be militarily occupied. This occupation was a surprise to the people of SSC. It was a surprise to them because according to the signed agreements by the traditional leaders of the Isaac clan and the Dhulbahnte people laid the foundation of a peaceful co-existence between them. Over the last three years the people of SSC have been trying to solve this conflict in a peaceful manner. But the administration in Hargeisa ignored the messages sent by the traditional leaders of the SSC people, while the people in the Eastern regions indirectly collaborated and showed their indifference to this occupation. The SSC social group sent one delegation after the other to the North-eastern representatives in Garowe to find a way to bring the occupied territories back into their hands. This administration in Garowe showed no interest in freeing the occupied territories. Such indifference in the Somali traditional political context has only one interpretation and that is there is no territory missing from the perspective of the Garowe administration. This factor of indifference from the side of the Garowe administration added to the inhuman ill treatment of the people of Las Anod such as murder, imprisonments, rape and disappearance of people has brought something unknown in the regions of SSC since the day the Darwish movement was defeated; the birth of a Resistance Movement. When people are deprived of their rights it is natural to resist. In addition when injustice becomes law, resistance is justified and becomes a duty. The people of Sool region particularly the two occupied big cities of Las Anod and Yigoore as well as their surroundings were humiliated and as in the past (during the British colonial administration) being imposed and forced to pay head taxes. Anyone who fails to pay is either imprisoned or his/her doors or windows are forcibly pulled out from their houses by the militia from Hargeisa. This occupation has deprived the civil society of their political freedom, denied the right to self-determination and freedom from fear and expression. In addition it led to severe human rights violations, including torture and killings. We all know that these crimes violate individuals’ most basic rights to life and physical safety. (Alex Moseley,”Just War Theory,” in the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy – 2001) The people have been made poor and denied access to health care and forced to accept in their schools a curriculum that has no relevance to their culture and historical background. This is an example of historical perspective the administration in Hargeisa would like to enforce into the education system of SSC regions: Somaliland achieved its independence from United Kingdom which had occupied as a British Protectorate in 1884. In 26 June 1960, Somaliland achieved its independence and being a sovereign state among UN-member states with a president (Late H. Omer Askar) and a Prime Minister (Moh.ed H. Ibrahim Egal), United immediately, without condition, with Italian Somalia (UN-trusteeship), that gained its independence from Italia government in 1st July / 1960. The basic driving concept behind the union was merely not more than to lay the foundation stone for an old wishful dream of future union of the five Somalis (French Somaliland, Somaliland under British protectorate, Italian Somalia, Somalis Under Ethiopia and those under Kenya (NFD). So far, it is a failed aspiration! Because of the Cultural, administrative, educational & attitudinal differences existed between the two united countries, within six months after union, a total repulsion between the two societies immerged. During union, most of the key positions of the government (union) were denied from Somalilanders. Repulsion expressed by mass voice against union was showed up followed by mass demonstrations organized in main towns of Somaliland. In early 1961, just 6 months after union, a coup d.etat lead by young Somalilander Military officers graduated from San-heirs military academy in Britain, worked and organized a coup d. etate planed to nullify the .the union., but didn.t become successful. Soon after the Siyad Barre.s Military revolution in 1969, 60 general directors and high-ranked military officials expelled from their posts by the ruling regime, because of their ethnic origin from Somaliland. Miss-trust and hatred developed between the two united member state of Somaliland and Somalia, worked passively and negatively through the Somaliland Societies. The above feeling exploded, in 1981, into armed anti-union liberation movements against the strong military regime of Siyad Barre. The war between the Somaliland national movements (SNM) and the dictatorial. Military regime of Somalia, reached it.s climax in 1988 when furious and painful face to face war took place between SNM and Military Forces in most major towns in Somaliland. The heaviest air and land pampardment occurred particularly in Hargeisa and Burao. That was the time when Siyad Barre.s regime cruelly intended to destroy a whole nation and targeted with heavy shelling and air-pumping taking off from Hargeisa Airport, the complete destruction and devastation of buildings, economic infra-structures, education institutions and lost of thousands of innocent human life. But be assured that such social and political developments in one segment of a nation will face resistance from the rest of the population. Furthermore resistance from the people becomes their only form of expression. The people of SSC believe today that they have tried to change things in the last three years through political or diplomatic means but found no positive response from all three administrations in Garowe, Hargeisa and Mogadishu. Therefore according to the people of SSC and their leaders believe the only alternative and effective way open for them today is to pursue justice through violent confrontation. The most recent events in the SSC regions such as the killings of innocent civilians in Widh-Widh, Bali-Hadhac and Buhoodle – attack on non-combatants- accelerated the option to stand and fight back. The people of SSC, young, old, rich and poor and either inside or outside the country realised today that there is no justice in the present political environment of Somalia in general unless the people themselves return the clock back to a position where they can decide the destiny of their people. The natives of SSC have acquired the knowledge and the experience today that the only way to define your rights is to be in a position of strength. Furthermore they noticed and felt the way the administrations in Hargeisa and Garowe behave when it comes to the regions of SSC and deal them as if they were non-existent and could be dealt with might. Nonetheless the elite in Hargeisa and Garowe have been covering their injustice towards the people of SSC through a subtle method in buying the very few, who are members of their administrations and nominating them into non-important positions. These administrations are enabling such individuals or the “fifth column” – as they are known by the people of SSC- to speak to the international agencies as if they are representing the social group in the three regions of SSC. It seems that the international agencies are becoming complacent to the atrocities conducted in these regions, if they continue relying on the falsified political statements coming from the people responsible of the tragedies evolving from the regions of SSC. In conclusion I do believe that the people of SSC have the same view and thinking as the French fableist La Fontaine wrote in 1668: “those who enjoy power always arrange matters so as to give their tyranny an appearance of justice. Final Pre-electional Somaliland Poll Strongly Projects UDUB Party Winning by 54.5% of the Vote. The final Polls before the Somaliland Presidential Election - By Somaliland Public Policy Independent researchers Idris .A. Farah (Gaas) and M.A Shine are Research unit and Directors. While none of the contesting parties has conducted scientific and credible polls regarding Somaliland voter’s attitudes and preferences showing strong correlation between party campaigns and the actual wining of votes, they all have made strong forecasting about their prospects for victory. It’s not unusual for Somaliland political parties to claim victories that are contrary to the polls that have been conducted by independent observers. Nevertheless, based on our observations neither Kulmiye nor UCID has shown any capability for capturing the highest office in the land. Most independent political analysts we talk to believe that the fledging opposition parties lack the capacity to run effective campaigns to dislodge the entrenched UDUB party. Our study explores the voting behavior among social groups specifically gender, age, labor skill and the unemployed, the relationship between those groups and the 2010 election voting behavior by using the descriptive statistic analysis. It look closely at the impact of these social forces have on this contest by comparing it to the previous election to point at the differences between the three elections. Hypothetically, the impact of party identification, gender, and regional voting defenses on the 2010 Somaliland presidential election are bigger than collision of clan, gender and regional voting disparity on previous elections which people were divided severely by the clan - region split rather than ideology or party loyalty. Theoretically, the social, psychological, rational choice and mobilization theories can analyze this selection very well because people are voting in this time as a group; they have very strong loyalty to their party, and region. As our study projects civic groups mainly from ordinary people, such as families, associations, business people and young voters are giving their votes to Rayale while very young people, civil war veterans, the less educated, an unskilled labor force and the unemployed are mainly voting for Silanyo. In contrast, both business people and civil society voters are going to to support the success of this election. The care about the outcome of the Somaliland presidential election because as indicated by our observation they think that president Rayale is for peace, stability, development and motivated by UDUB’s’ progressive policy . Even though, the presidential campaign has just ended and regions are different in their political preferences, people are inspired by inspired by party identification and campaign organizer. At the same times all the candidates are getting their biggest support mainly from their respective party loyalty and geographic location rather than tribal lineage compared to 2003 election where the presidential hopefuls were getting their support mainly from their tribe. Political deference between parties is always sharps in Somaliland presidential race, but the 2010 presidential election is quite different from 2003 in terms of clan based voting. In 2003, according to a survey done by Somaliland election focus group 78% of each clan supported their candidate without building coalition with another tribe. However, in 2010 people are apparently voting through their party’s ticket. Gender differences in voting behavior were not so strong in Somaliland, but in 2010 presidential election it becomes stronger because more than 45% of women are going to vote for Udub where as 24% of women are going to vote for Ucid and 32% for Kulmiye. As the gender politics begin to emerge in Somaliland, some feminist think that there is room for Somaliland women in politics and are hoping that women would participate effectively in the Somaliland democratic process. Monday, June 21, 2010 LASANOD ONLINE:- Chieftain Farole bitterly hates and discriminates against the Sool, Sanaag and Cayn people (SSC). What did they do to him? Nothing at all. Why then is he so hostile to them? Nobody knows what is ailing the chieftain. Only the Lord knows. Chieftain Farole made common cause with the anti-Somali secessionist regime of Hargeisa that occupies many parts of SSC territory. He refers them as his brothers while he describes SSC freedom fighters to be terrorists who are fighting for a lost or hopeless cause as he put it. As a result, the SSC people are now caught between two evil regimes, one in Hargeisa and one in Garowe. However, these are the devil’s party, and they will be the losers. Chieftain Farole’s recent unjust and baseless accusations against SSC have touched off widespread protest and condemnation on the part of SSC communities at home and abroad. But on the other hand, the chieftain’s fiery speeches were a blessing in disguise. The frustrated SSC people have rolled their sleeves and rallied together and united their ranks. They now fully realize that chieftain Farole is a vengeful and a real avowed enemy of SSC people. He is opposed to their legitimate rights and their vital interests as a people. Chieftain Farole’s strange behavior is inexplicable. He is a hot-tempered man who takes snap and tactless decisions. He does not know how to build consensus. He only knows and excels in how to alienate, estrange and frustrate others. He seems to be a queer fish and out of the common. The man is a real nightmare and more harm than good. The grievous harm he is causing to the status of Puntland and its people is irreparable. He is out of touch with the public opinion. He seems to be a bird singing outside its flock. Chieftain Farole has shown poor political leadership. He is under fire and his star is in descent. His rating has been low since his inauguration and he has no support base. Puntland State is now in political crisis and domestic security is worsening. The situation does not bode well. The future of Punltand State under chieftain Farole’s one man show rule is not promising. That is any one’s guess. Informed circles say that there is one big problem and that is the man is gruff and irksome and it is very hard to work with him. The people fear that things may get even worse in the years to come. Chieftain Farole is now doing his best to drive SSC people out of P/land. And if that happens, P/land will become a fractured state.

She was suffering from adrenal distress, and its symptoms – including insomnia and hair loss – would last for a year and a half. “Being ill had shaken something loose in my head,” the 27-year-old writes in her new memoir The Butterfly Mosque. “That so many people were well – that I had been well for so long – seemed miraculous.” After she recovered, Ms. Wilson accepted a teaching position in Cairo: Her decision to convert to Islam came mid-flight, over the Mediterranean. Days later, she would meet her future husband Omar, a pious Muslim and heavy-metal aficionado, at their English-language school. He showed her markets and cafés free of Westerners, and later steered her through her first Ramadan. Ms. Wilson, a first-time author, spoke with The Globe and Mail from Seattle, where she relocated to with her husband nearly three years ago. Your memoir is punctuated by people asking why you converted to Islam. You tell your roommate you tried to be an atheist but that “it didn’t work.” What do you tell people now? It really depends on why the person is asking and on what our relationship is. I was searching for a religion that spoke to me and Islam did that in a more complete way than anything else I had studied. There was a pull for me in the words of the Koran that seemed very personal. When you tell your roommate Jo that Islam is sex-positive, she asks you to look around Egypt, where she says women are “hunted like animals.” How do you reconcile those kinds of questions with your faith? I don’t. There are things that go on in Muslim countries that are completely out of line with the teachings of Islam. If you look anywhere in the world where people are dealing with oppression or war or poverty, you see them acting in a shocking way. If you look at Uganda with the Lord’s Resistance Army that’s sanctioning child soldiers and child marriage and committing all sorts of atrocity quoting the Bible the whole time, we can separate that because we’re familiar with Christianity. It’s less easy for us to make that separation when it comes to Islam because it’s so foreign to us. You told your family and friends via e-mail that you’d converted, and their responses were slow in coming. You write that your parents were “supportive in a weary and slightly self-recriminating way,” as if your decision “resulted from a defect in their parenting.” It was subtle. They were worried. If a member of the family moves far away and adopts a different religion, naturally your response would be, “What’s wrong with where you come from and what you’ve always believed?” Did they think you were brainwashed? If they did, they never told me. It was clear from the beginning that I wasn’t in lockstep with this new ideology or that I’d abandoned everything from my old life. Your engagement came on the day you confessed to Omar that you loved him and he first held your hand. Yeah. We were never going to be just boyfriend/girlfriend. That does not really exist in Egypt, not among mainstream Egyptians. So there was no ring, just this discussion. We were creating a hybrid culture as we went. If I had been an Egyptian girl from a mainstream Egyptian family we would have done the very traditional thing and he would have come to my father and said, “Here’s what I’m willing to offer your daughter,” in terms of a home or a ring. Since we were dealing with two cultures, we just had a serious conversation about what this would mean and where would we go from here. You said you and your husband turned to the Koran whenever you had a disagreement about “gender or freedom of movement.” Did you have many of those? Some, yeah. Egypt is a very different place than the U.S. on every level – psychologically, emotionally and socially. People go about their daily lives in different ways. It’s unusual for women of a certain class to do their own shopping: They’ll send maids or have delivery people. I’m used to growing up with everybody doing everything for themselves. [For Egyptians], it was strange to see someone who wanted to do as much running around and busy work as I did. Ironically, religion was the most neutral interface [my husband and I] could use to resolve those things, because it predates everything that we both know by 1,400 years. It didn’t take sides, oddly enough. You decide to start wearing the hijab. How did your American circle receive that? Pretty well. I like to co-ordinate it with my outfits and I have a lot of different coloured scarves. It’s not like I put on a sheet and started walking around silently like a black omen of death. I think that was probably a relief: It wasn’t something that was crushing my personality. When you start wearing it, your husband asks you why. You tell him you wanted to give him something bigger than anything you’d given anyone before. Is that the right reason? I don’t know that there is such a thing as the right reason. That’s the funny thing about religion. We can all take these symbols that are the same for everybody and yet can they mean something radically different to each person who takes them up. Why did you leave Cairo? I wanted to spend at least part of my adult life in my own country. I felt like I was losing touch with my friends who were the same age. We should have been at the same phase of life but they were just in completely in different places. They’d talk about sublets and going on Craigslist to find a roommate and car insurance and I’m sitting there thinking, “I don’t know about any of these things. Today I went down to the market and I bought a live chicken for lunch!” All of the adult skills that I had were Egyptian skills. I didn’t want to lose track of my American life completely. Laascaanood Reporter Beaten Tortured Imprisoned The Somali TV Universal confirmed that their Laascaanood reporter Maxamed Shaqale has been imprisoned by the Somaliland Clan Militia police based in Laascaanood, but they did not say what happened to Maxamed Shaqale after he was taken to prison. We now have an update on the situation from our reporters on the ground in Laascaanood and Hargeysa. It has been confirmed by our reporters that since Mr Shaqale was removed from his home, the Somaliland Clan Militia subjected him to mental torture and physical beatings. The Somali TV news confirmed the reason Maxamed Shaqale has been taken to prison is all because of the report that he presented showing that Xudun, Taleex and surrounding villages are supporting the SSC peace and progress leaders, and that SSC is independent of both the Somaliland Clan Militia and the Puntland administration. The reporter Maxamed Shaqale has been beaten both on his way to the Buro (Burco) prison and during his transfer from Buro to the extreme Mandera prison, where it is confirmed that 99% of the occupants in the prison are from SSC and 95% originate from the *********** Clan. Many of these prisoners have never had a trial, majority are collected from Laascaanood and surrounding villages. This is part of the tribal cleansing agenda of the Somaliland Clan, to imprison or kill all the young men of the SSC, particularly the *********** and ********** SSC supporters. Many families in the SSC region do not know whether their son, husband or fathers are dead or alive as no outside contact is allowed for these men that are imprisoned all because of their tribe. The imprisoning of the reporter Maxamaed Shaqale highlights the need for international intervention in the region, to stop the innocent people that are being tortured because of their tribal region and support for the peace loving SSC leaders, who have acting against great odds to stop the Somaliland Clan Militia killings in the SSC region.

Foreign Helicopters Sky Hunting Somali Life By Abdulkarim Mohamed Jimale Somalia -Has Somalian wildlife been defined as terrorists? Are the ostriches, gazelles and warthogs harbouring terrorists? “From late 2008 up to the present foreign helicopters patroling warships in Somali waters have been poaching and stealing wildlife from the coastal villages in North Eastern, Somalia” Farah Ahmed an elder in Eyl district told Islamonline.net, IOL. Elders and nomadic families of the coastal villages in Puntland, a self-declared state in northeastern Somalia, are suffering from foreign helicopters that are hunting and stealing wildlife on the outskirts of the villages in coastal areas. The most targeted areas by the flying poachers are Nugal, Karkar and Mudug regions. “Foreign helicopters are poaching and stealing wildlife from the coastal villages. They are terrorizing the nomadic families, and this is affecting their livestock. Many children have been lost after being terrified by the planes,” said Mohammed Yusuf, another elder in Gar’ad Village in Mudug region. Mohammed Yusuf added in a phone interview with IOL that the helicopters have been targeting the gazelles, ostrich’s and warthogs. “The areas they are hunting and stealing the wild life from is rich with gazelles and ostrich’s. Now there are no more wildlife there, foreign helicopters hunted thousands, and they are still illegally hunting” “Before the foreign helicopters began to steal the wildlife from the coastal villages, gazelles, ostrich’s and the warthogs were walking around in groups. We, the elders of the coastal villages, were keeping them and barred residents from hunting them, but now you can see only a small number of the wildlife are still walking around and this is evidence of foreigners poaching our wildlife,” he said Inflicting Harm Jama ‘Abdi, another elder from the same region told IOL that the helicopters have been spraying the wildlife with chemicals which effect the environment. “The pastures dry immediately, whenever the helicopters spray the wildlife,” he said, adding that they don’t know exactly who is stealing the wild life. “The planes are of great concern to animals whenever they hover around the water holes. Animals get scared from the planes and start to stampede, causing great harm,” he added. A Somali livestock herder called Hassan ‘Abdiwali ‘Ali who lives in Mudug region's Godobjiran district told IOL that he witnessed foreign military helicopters hunting and stealing wildlife. “I saw helicopters flying overhead spraying the wildlife, and collecting them in nets, then fly away" he said. He claimed that some of his livestock actually died from the spraying. “The pastoralists and nomadic families didn’t think that foreign helicopters who came for peace making would steal our wildlife.” Governance in Somalia Somalia has not had a central authority for years now, but parts of the country such as in the north which comes under shaky semi-autonomous regions, enjoy relative peace. Now the noise of the flying poachers stealing wild life has become a problem which has forced thousands of people who were living peacefully, to flee from their homes. “The pastoralists have rifles; the only solution I think we can do as elders is to order the pastoralists and the nomadic families to fire on the helicopters, because we don’t have any other form of power,” another elder told IOL. “We want the flying poachers to stop displacing our people, to stop annihilating us, Let them return what they have poached or compensate. We are alarmed in the way in which this problem is affecting the people, animals and the residence,” ‘Abdiaziz Aw Yusuf, the district commissioner of Jariban in Mudug region told IRIN radio on 22 October, 2009 Elders Appeal to Stop the Poaching! Usually the helicopters operate within the coastal area, where international warships which have been deployed to fight with Somali pirates, are stationed. However, the locals are appealing to the international community, AU, EU, Somali government and Puntland authority to stop the foreigners poaching their wildlife. The warships are also a serious nightmare for Somali fishermen on the north east coast. The fishermen are unable to sail on the high seas because of the fear of being attacked by the forces. The multinational warships, which are under a UN-mandate, patrol to deter possible piracy on commercial ships, and UN-charted vessels carrying humanitarian aid to the Horn of Africa.
