  1. So I wasn’t just being paranoid there was a memo sent out, I knew it Someone mentioned something about educated men are okay with being uneducated women and not vise-versa…When a woman is looking to settle down, she is looking for a man who would provide for her and her future children, and living in western world a provider is a man who is employed in a profession…Now you can’t be an engineer or doctor or whatever without having an education…Right now in my state, there are people with masters’ degree and beyond applying for entry level jobs, because of the economy…So imagine where a guy who dropped out of high school or only has a high school degree would fall in such hard economical situation…Where as men when looking for a partner they look for qualities like good nature, humility, good cook, etc…He is not choosing her to provide for him therefore her academic education isn’t that important I am sure a lot of parents are proud of their children’s both guys and girls accomplishment but maybe because men work with their degree more often than women do their education is valued more in the long run. When I see an educated man who is pleasant and working hard to achieve something in his life, as a Somali woman, I feel proud of that…But the attitude and terms I have heard from men toward educated woman are like “expensive” “has too much high expectation” “unappreciative” I think education is an empowerment for woman and a man should appreciate a partner like that rather than avoid.

  15. Doing the right thing isn't always easy, if it comes easily to anyone, then they might not be doing the right thing...I mean if only you had to pay for the decision to tell the truth and stand up for right, it would be okay...But imagine having a younger sibling, parents, children, or whomever it is being the recepient of your decision...How do you live with the knowledge of causing them harm, and again how do you live with your silence!!! As to not snitching due to some feeling that we as somali should stick together even in wrong, I don't get that one, it's a misplaced loyalty
  16. Hey J. Lee, I finally had a chance to read your story, and thought to comment on it...Hope it would be okay and helpful First thing after I read it that came to mind, beside the grammatical errors as you mentioned, that your piece had a poetic quality...I thought it was a pleasant suprise...Down part of this story is, there is no shape to it...For example, there isn't a setting, it seems like its jumping from different scenes in one breath...I write about what I know and I am sure many writers start off that way...Probably your female character is in some way represents you or someone you know, therefore you felt comfortable with her...But you gave too much of her too soon meaning all her insecurities came right from the get go...We didn't get the other side of her, the one to make us feel compassion toward her...Finally the feelings or the thoughts of the character ran together, at times it took me a second to figure out it was her vs. him having those thoughts...I hope I did make sense in some way to help or not offend...Take care, bee bye And if you feel like it, let me know what you think about my pieces!!!Even steven, right
  17. How come the guys haven't contributed to this topic, even if not love, I am sure most of the guys here exprienced a form of an attachment or other!!!
  18. What about the source of the money, would that make a difference?...It seems like there are certain jobs in our culture, which individuals make a good financial income from, but often are not respected and are looked down upon...Is it only the money or the prestige that comes with the money that is important?
  19. loool I like this story, brutal but funny, after all it's just a story, right!!!!
  20. I was a big coke drinker for long time...It really got bad, where I would drink pop for a whole week(twice a day sometimes) and no water...I must have a tougher kidney than camel by now...When it started to be the first thing I thought about as I woke-up, I knew I had to make changes...Now its been 3 months, with only few days, since I have drank coke...Although water is great, it's just gets boring, so those little packett of crystal light come great in handy...I tried juice first, but those things like have 170 calories, almost the same as a 20 oz bottle of coke
  21. I would choose the one that is well mannered, not too effectionate, but very stable hands down R u getting married FirstLady!!!!

  23. This story is not a continuation to the previously posted story by me, but this weekend I was inspired to write a new one, without the hanging at the end...Hope you guys like it. She was nervous No one who knew Amal would ever believe of anything being capable of unsaddling her…When things got out of hand and everyone was unhinging, Amal always maintained her focus and never lost her coolness…Nothing was too scary for her to handle or get her hands in it. Amal smiled sardonically, aggressiveness was an asset when applied in the business world, but when it came to building a romantic relationship, it was more of handicap than an asset…Well too bad, she didn’t give a rats *** about men finding aggressive women too intimating, it’s not for her to hand held their hands…That’s why she was sitting in an old café on a highway heading to god knows where without a plan. She told herself it was a much deserved break to re-evaluate her life and to try living life in the moment without thinking every move beforehand. Omar stared, feeling mesmerized, though he had no idea why…He couldn’t see the woman who walked into the café very clearly, but he felt edgy looking at her…As she sat down, he still couldn’t see her well, but he could see most of her face now…She wasn’t beautiful but pretty in a subdued way…And then she turned around, and he saw her eyes…Nearly spellbound, Omar couldn’t pull his gaze away…He never seen such beautiful big hazel eyes before…He’d seen women with more attractive features, but none with sexier eyes Despite his attempt at indifference, Omar’s gaze never left her…Something about her, intrinsically female, called to him…Beneath his skin, a strange warmth expanded… He hadn’t felt such staggering reaction to a woman since his teens, but he had grown up since then…As he continued to watch her, he decided to approach her and ask to play a game of billiard while waiting for the rain to stop…And he was not taking a NO for an answer Amal had noticed him, sitting casually several tables down, and that look of intensity in his eyes…She didn’t feel uncomfortable maintaining eye contact with someone for long duration, but his was making her self-conscious…Her eyes widened as she noticed him moving toward her direction “oh my god, he is heading this way.” She instinctively retreated to her professional self, safer ground to maintain a calm facade, when she is basically wanted to fidget. “Hello, my name is Omar; I couldn’t help but notice you sitting alone. I see the rain is bringing many people off the highway into the café…I had to give up my table to family, and yours is the only available seat, do you mind if I join you!” Oh how silly of her, she hadn’t noticed the place filling up, until now that he mentioned it…He just needed to use the table with her, nothing else “Of course, please have a seat” As he slid into the booth, she inhaled the scent of rain mixed with his unique scent…She frowned, she had never noticed a man’s scent before, why was she reacting to this stranger this way…And then he smiled and her mind went blank “Oh I love rain, don’t like being caught in it though, but definitely brings back childhood memories…I saw a billiard table over there, and there seems to be a game ending, would you care to join me for a game?” “Thank you for asking, but I don’t think so, you see I have never played it before” “Its quiet easy really, I can tell you the rules and its fun” This trip, she had promised herself she would do something frivolous or in the spur of moment if she had the chance, why was she hesitating saying yes…She inhaled deeply, because she was attracted to this man in a way she never been to another man. She blinked up at him “What are the rules?” Omar exhaled roughly and explained “For this game we would have 12 colored balls and one white cue ball…The cue ball is used to knock the other balls into the pockets but itself must not go into the pocket…Since you are starting, you choose whatever color you want, and must put your balls in the pocket…If you accidentally touch my colors you lose point…Who is shooting continues to shoot until they miss their shot.” The rules seemed fairly simple to Amal and if nothing else came out of her spontaneous adventure, so be it. And she threw herself into the game with the eagerness of a child. While Amal bent over to try to hit the ball dead center, Omar leaned back against the table, folded his arm across his chest, and blatantly observed her. Amal didn’t have that kind of spectacular figure that attracted male attention from across the room, and her clothing rather disguise than enhance…But when she began to relax and enjoy herself, she had a natural grace that drew the eye. To his delight, his partner played with enthusiasm and gusto and soon he had to play with more concentration…Amal appreciated that because she wasn’t intending to just let him win and he wasn’t letting himself be defeated easily…Despite her concentration, she was obviously enjoying herself now…And in few minutes, she potted her last ball, and won the game. “For a beginner, you are done very well, and with practice you could turn into a sharp player yourself.” She was absurdly pleased by his generosity in defeat and compliment…But she was dismayed to have their conversation end so soon. “So feel like dancing?” “If you only you would dance with me outside in the rain” He smiled that devastatingly smile again and said “why not”…Omar liked that she took the initiative to suggest something out of the ordinary…And he wasn’t about to pass the opportunity to hold her in his arm and see how they fit, although he already knew it would be perfect fit. As he brought her closer to his body, Amal felt his touch at her back, to the tip of her toes…All she could think of before he started moving was “oh boy” There was something exhilarating about dancing in the rain, it is like it washed all the anxiety away and self-doubt…All that remained was the man and the woman, enjoying each others company, as they are pounded by the heavy rain…She didn’t want to say a word, as she raised her head up…His hair clung to his forehead and several of his shirt buttons were opened exposing few inches of naked chest…He was vital and beautiful and she wanted him as she had never wanted a man before. He curved his hand around the back of her head and tilting it up for his kiss…His lips were soft, warm, and his tongue a subtle tease…As natural as breathing, she opened her mouth…The kiss deepened and the desire twisted deeply, she closed her eyes…She stood on her toes and locked both arms around his neck….A car honking brought her back to her senses…With disbelief, she realized she was standing in the middle of parking lot simply kissing a stranger, as matter of fact eating him up, as she gasped for breath. Their gaze met and he simply uttered “let’s go” Few hours later, as she laid her head against his shoulder before falling asleep, Amal thought this was not a bad way to spend their first wedding year anniversary…She couldn’t believe it’s been a year since her good friend tried to set her up with her friend Omar’s friend…To arrange the date, Omar called her and somehow they ended on the phone for several hours…Next day, it was Omar who showed up at her door saying “you were a great woman and I couldn’t pass you off to someone else”…Next year it would definitely be her turn to plan.
