Male Brain Science Gives Clue to Nagging Questions Turns Out It's Not Laziness, Sexism or Pigheadedness, It's Just Biological By Jill Serjeant, Reuters LOS ANGELES (Oct. 1) - It's the universal question on many women's lips. "What could he be thinking?" she shrieks, or sighs or sulks at her husband, boyfriend or son. What is it with men and cars? Why doesn't he notice how much housework needs to be done? Why does he need to keep a grip on the remote control? And the most bewildering one of all -- why won't he just talk to me? The answers, says social philosopher and author Michael Gurian, lie not in laziness, sexism or sheer pigheadedness but in profound differences between the male and female brain -- and scientists now have the technology to prove it. "What Could He Be Thinking? How a Man's Mind Really Works," combines two decades of neurobiological research with anecdotes from everyday life and Gurian's experience as a family therapist to present a new vision of the male psyche. It's a vision that Gurian hopes will help promote a better understanding of men and reverse what he sees as the dangerous assumption born of the past 40 years of radical feminism that men have simply become redundant. "As a culture, we've made profound mistakes in the last few decades by assuming that men were unnecessary. Many people have even gone so far as to negate or dismiss what is at the core of a man," Gurian writes. Gurian, author of the 1996 groundbreaking book "The Wonder of Boys" and its follow-up "The Wonder of Girls," is no anti-feminist. He is married with two daughters, and his book mines the field of brain science to help improve relations between couples. Culture plays a part, but Gurian argues that biology matters much more than previously realized. "The science has been crucial. Wherever I go, I start by showing PET scans and people can see for themselves the differences between the male and female brain. I think that alters life and marriages," Gurian told Reuters. THE SCIENCE PART Such are the advances in technology and understanding that PET radioactive-imaging and MRI magnetic-imaging scans can now show whether a man and a woman are truly in love by measuring the amount of activity in the cingulate gyrus, an emotion center in the brain, Gurian says. Like a guide through a secret forest, his book leads the nonscientist through the complex world of brain science and relates it to some of the most frustrating sources of conflict between men and women in long-term relationships. The male brain secretes less of the powerful primary bonding chemical oxytocin and less of the calming chemical serotonin than the female brain. So while women find emotional conversations a good way to chill out at the end of the day, the tired male brain needs to zone out all that touchy-feely chatter in order to relax -- which is why he wants the remote control to zap through "mindless" sport or action movies. His brain takes in less sensory detail than a woman's, so he doesn't see or even feel the dust and household mess in the same way. Anyhow, the male brain attaches less personal identity to the inside of a home and more to the workplace or the yard -- which is why he doesn't get worked up about housework. Male hormones such as testosterone and vasopressin set the male brain up to seek competitive, hierarchical groups in its constant quest to prove self-worth and identity. That is why men, paradoxically (from a hormonally altered new mother's point of view), become even more workaholic once they have kids, to whom they must also prove their worth. BACK TO NATURE Gurian says his book is aimed mainly at women. "Men get this already. They are living this brain but they don't have the conscious language to explain it. Women are not living it. "If they are relating to a man, I hope they will be touched, informed and entertained and will have a new vision of the way they can make their relationship work. "I beg people to go back to nature, look at the PET scans, look at the brain differences and see if it makes sense." If it does, the consequences are profound for a generation of "liberated" women brought up to believe it is men who have to change, and men who must respond to a female way of relating in order for marriage to succeed. Gurian says men can learn new skills and alter their behavior but they will not be able to meet all of women's expectations. "Popular culture focuses so much on trying to get people closer. Most people believe that marriages break up because men and women are not close enough. But what I am learning about the brain leads to the idea of intimate separateness, in which the brain seeks less intimacy at times," Gurian said. "People want to love each other. If we can learn who we might be -- not what IS he thinking, but what COULD he be thinking -- then I am optimistic."

Racist or Realist? Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb is "the best in the business," according to his coach. But ESPN's Rush Limbaugh says McNabb is unjustly hyped because the media wants a black quarterback to succeed. Is Rush right? Or is he the one guilty of unjust hype? McNabb Calls Comments 'Shocking' By ROB MAADDI, Associated Press PHILADELPHIA (Oct. 1) - Donovan McNabb doesn't mind criticism of his performance. He's upset that Rush Limbaugh made his race an issue. And the Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback says it's too late for an apology from the conservative commentator, who said the media has overrated McNabb because they want to see a black quarterback succeed. ``It's somewhat shocking to hear that on national TV from him,'' McNabb said Wednesday. ``It's not something that I can sit here and say won't bother me.'' Limbaugh insisted Wednesday he had ``no racist intent whatsoever.'' In fact, the conservative commentator said he must have been right; otherwise, the comments would not have sparked such outrage. Before McNabb led the Eagles to a 23-13 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Limbaugh said on ESPN's pregame show that he didn't think McNabb was as good as perceived from the start. ``I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well,'' Limbaugh said on ``Sunday NFL Countdown.'' ``There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team.'' Limbaugh did not back down during his syndicated radio talk show Wednesday. ``All this has become the tempest that it is because I must have been right about something,'' Limbaugh said. ``If I wasn't right, there wouldn't be this cacophony of outrage that has sprung up in the sports writer community.'' The NFL disclaimed any responsibility from Limbaugh's remarks. ``ESPN knew what it was getting when they hired Rush Limbaugh,'' league vice president Joe Browne said. ``ESPN selects its on-air talent, not the NFL.'' Chris Berman, who anchors the ESPN show, said he did not believe Limbaugh's tone or intent was malicious. ``As cut and dry as it seems in print, I didn't think so when it went by my ears,'' he said. ``I probably should have looked to soften it. We're sorry we upset a guy who got off to a rough start.'' McNabb said someone on the show should have taken on Limbaugh. Among the other panelists are former players Michael Irvin and Tom Jackson, both of whom are black. ``I'm not pointing at anyone but someone should have said it,'' McNabb said of the panelists, who also include former quarterback Steve Young. ``I wouldn't have cared if it was the cameraman.'' Limbaugh was scheduled to be in Philadelphia on Thursday to speak at a broadcast convention. McNabb said he wouldn't be welcome at the Eagles' practice. ``I really don't want to see him,'' McNabb said. ``You can say you're sorry all you want, it doesn't matter. It's been said.'' The extent of the controversy became more evident when Democratic presidential candidates Wesley Clark and Howard Dean urged ESPN to fire Limbaugh. Clark, a retired Army general, called the remarks ``hateful and ignorant speech.'' And Dean, a former Vermont governor, followed up with his own assessment - ``absurd and offensive.'' The NAACP also condemned Limbaugh's remarks, calling them ``bigoted and ignorant,'' and called for the network to fire Limbaugh or at least provide an opposing point of view on the show. ``It is appalling that ESPN has to go to this extent to try to increase viewership,'' NAACP President Kweisi Mfume said in a statement. ESPN said: ``We have conveyed to Mr. Limbaugh that his comments were insensitive and inappropriate.'' McNabb, who was runner-up for the league MVP award in 2000 and has led the Eagles to two straight NFC championship games, said he has no quarrel with Limbaugh's comment on his ability. ``I know I played badly the first two games,'' he said. McNabb got off to the worst start of his career this season and was the NFL's lowest-rated starting quarterback after losses to Tampa Bay and New England. Still, the Eagles are 36-22 in games he has started, including 4-3 in the playoffs. Limbaugh on Wednesday reiterated that he doesn't think McNabb is a bad player, just that he isn't as good as some media members think he is. ``This is such a mountain out of a molehill,'' he said. ``There's no racism here, there's no racist intent whatsoever.'' Limbaugh is the radio host of the politically focused ``Rush Limbaugh Show,'' which is syndicated in more than 650 markets worldwide. He spent most of the 1990s assailing then-President Clinton and now spends Sunday mornings talking football, a job he called ``the fulfillment of a dream.'' Limbaugh has helped increase the ratings for ``Sunday NFL Countdown.'' ESPN spokesman Dave Nagle said ratings are up 10 percent overall. Sunday's show drew its biggest audience in the regular season since 1996. Seven black quarterbacks started games last weekend. Two other blacks who regularly start, Daunte Culpepper of Minnesota and Michael Vick of Atlanta, were out with injuries. Asked about Limbaugh's comments, Eagles defensive end N.D. Kalu said: ``He speaks well, he's well-read, but he's an id!ot .''

Lizard-Spit Drug Helps in Diabetes Lower Blood Sugar -- And Weight Loss -- with Gila-Monster Drug By Daniel DeNoon Reviewed By Michael Smith, MD on Wednesday, August 27, 2003 WebMD Medical News Aug. 27, 2003 -- It lowers blood sugar. It seems to cause weight loss. And now it's the hottest drug in the diabetes pipeline. It also happens to come from the venom of the Gila monster. It's called exenatide and it's been grabbing headlines at recent meetings of diabetes specialists. The newest report comes from the 18th International Diabetes Federation Congress in Paris. In a phase 3 clinical trial, exenatide is being used to treat 155 type 2 diabetes patients whose blood sugar remains high despite treatment with standard diabetes drugs. After 24 weeks' of treatment with exenatide injections, 44% of the patients had their HgA1C levels -- which indicate the average amount of sugar in the blood -- drop to near recommended levels. And they lost weight, too: An average 7.5 pounds, report Kristin Taylor, PhD, and colleagues at Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc. in San Diego, Calif. "These results are important, because many patients with type 2 diabetes do not meet treatment targets -- and those that do have difficulty maintaining those targets," says exenatide researcher Michael Nauck, MD, head of the diabetes center at Bad Lauterberg, Germany, in a news release. "The fact that many of the patients who failed to meet targets on other medications were successful in reaching target with exenatide is very encouraging." A major side effect is nausea, although this seems to get better with continued treatment. From Lizard Venom to Diabetes Drug Gila monsters are poisonous lizards. They don't have fangs like vipers. Instead, they grab onto their prey with vice-like jaws while their grooved teeth leak venom-containing spit. The lizards live in the desert, and eat as few as four times a year. Between meals, their hunger system shuts down. A chemical called exendin-4 is found in their venom. When ingested with saliva, it wakes up the lizards' metabolic system. Oddly, this reptile molecule works in humans, too. It lowers blood sugar and promotes weight loss. And by a separate mechanism, it protects insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas and stimulates the growth of new beta cells. Beta cell death is a major factor in progression of type 2 diabetes. Alzheimer's Protection, Too? A compound similar to exenatide has two unpronounceable names: HSEGTFTSD and [ser(2)]exendin(1-9). In animal studies, this compound protected brain cells from toxic injury by plugging into a brain molecule called GLP-1R. The report, by University of Auckland researcher Matthew J. During, MD, and colleagues, appears in the August 17 issue of Nature Medicine. GLP-1R may therefore be a promising target for treatment strategies directed towards degenerative brain and thought disorders, During and colleagues conclude.

^^^^^Guess i wiLL join the cLub. I agree with JayLaani on this.FootbaLL(american)to me is a more intriguing game.MOre intense and interesting in the sense that its got more aggression.Sometimes you can hear the peopLe getting "crunched". I think they caLLed FootbaLL(american)footbaLL because of the attention and popuLarity that Soccer(the reaL footbaLL)was getting. So they figured if they give it the same name it may get the same exposure.FootbaLL(american)cant be caLLed HandbaLL because they aLready have a game with that name that deserves it even though footbaLL(american)maybe more suitabLe for that name. I dont know...im just putting two and two together...this probabLy doesnt even make much sense. IT couLd have been that they were "high" as some of you said...i think that they aLso had someone "famous" name the game...you know how these senseLess peopLe worship ceLebrities. But whatever i am FootboLL americano fan rather than "footbaLL".

he stands barefoot in the snow, starved from lack of food, wounded from months of battle and emotionally scarred from the eternity away from his family surrounded by nothing but death and the destruction of the war. he stands tough, with fire in his eyes and victory on his breath, he looks at us now in anger and disgust and tell us this.................. "i gave you a birthright to freedom born in the constitution and now your children graduate too illiterate to read it. i fought in the heat of desert barefoot to give you the freedom to live peacefully in your country and to speak and stand up for what you believe in. i left my family behind in a destitute to give you the freedom of speech and you remain silent on critical issues because it might offend your family or might be a bad business. i orphaned my children to give you a government to serve you and it has stolen the freedom from the people. it is the soldier not the reporter who gives you the freedom of the press. it is the soldier not the poet who gives you the freedom of the speech. it is the soldier not the revolution organizer who allows you to demonstrate. it's the soldier who salutes the flag, serves the flag whose nahash is covered with the flag that allows the protester to burn that flag." P.S. this poem is dedicated to all those soldiers who sacrificed everything above all who sacrificed their lives so that me and you could be born free, and how sad it is to see the way we honored those dead soldiers by destroying the same country that they dedicated their dear lives to. rest in peace my beloved SOMALI FREEDOM FIGHTERS.
