What is SOL community doing about the Drought?
grasshopper replied to double decker's topic in Politics
Look, this shouldn't be an argument about who or what organization you donate to - the bottom line is put your money where your mouth is and GIVE to ease the suffering of our people. No need to continue this debate that's clearly taking away from the topic at hand... Find an organization you trust and donate. simple. for me it's unicef. for others it could be an islamic one or a somali based one or anything. as long as you trust them and know that your money will get to where it needs to be. Hopefully someone suggests some somali orgs here.... That's all. ew, I posted in the politics section again... -

p.s. shouldn't this topic be in the general category? I only found it by searching the word "drought"...I never thought I'd post something in the politics section! -

I donated as much as I can (and the most I've ever donated in my life) to UNICEF's emergency relief campaign. http://www.unicef.ca/portal/SmartDefault.aspx?at=2727 Anyone in a position to do so should think about donating to an organization they trust. Better yet, send more money directly back home to any of your relatives in the affected areas. Yaabka, I work in fundraising and comments like yours don't help anyone. At least Save the Children is there doing something...what are you doing? besides throwing around BS percentages and discouraging people from donating? -

heck yeah, I like the sound of that the way I see it, if women are expected to work and bring in half the income, the man should (and most do) contribute to the housework too... that's my two cents. -
it's just a crazy lady with the most annoying voice ever screaming "allahu akbar" over and over again.

Great idea Oday! Better road conditions will definitely increase the quality of life. No need to have tunnel vision in Somalia's development. Forward thinking projects like this is just what Somalia needs.

I love this! it makes me want to visit the city and state. The video is kind of quirky - some observations: 2:46-3:02 poor guy looked like someone had a gun to his head and forced him to say good things about Minnesota 4:10 that is NOT cross country skiing! 6:47 in case you missed it folks he's from California 7:47 did she call herself "nimko"? 9:08 why the heck did they have to cut off one of the more well spoken ppl in the vid - let the guy finish! 11:49 lol @ "United states of minnesota" Someone should make one about Toronto.

some of my aunts are so obsessed with skin colour and you can totally see that they passed thier insecurities down to their children (to the extent that little girls refuse to stay out in the sun too long ) kids aren't born thinking that dark=ugly. they're taught that by the people they grow up with. also the somali nickname 'cadey' (sp?) needs to go

Centurion;714349 wrote: Some of the posts in here have been very distasteful. From both sides. I agree with Chimera that some professional Somali women are more likely to marry non Somalis partly because of a lack of equal numbers of professsional Somali men within their social/working environments. However i do not think it a sign of sophistication, nor one of social advancement on her part or on the Somali community's part. It is not something to be proud of, but neither is it something to get worked up about. If anything it is something to ignore, because A) As a competent adult it is her decison whom she chooses to have a relationship with, and eventually hers will be the consequences. B) Unfortunately, it is inevitable that in a western society where Somali men are incredibly outnumbered, some of our young women will find themselves in relationships with non Somalis and non Muslims. Contrary to Prometheus' post (who interestingly presents neither verse nor quote to support the supposed ambigious nature of Islam's position on female interfaith marriage), Islamic scriptures make it clear that a muslim woman marrying a non muslim is not permissible, so we may not approve of it (certainly i do not approve of it) but our approval hardly matters to her or other young somali women in her situation. As with many things in life, it is down to the family to imbue their young men and women with sufficient knowledge, appreciation and respect for their Islamic and Somali heritage for them to favour relationships with muslims, and it is in our best interest that the overwhelming majority of these relationships are with other Somalis. We can learn a lot from Western liberal culture, but a blasé attittude towards whom our young men and women marry is not conducive to a strong, unified Somali diaspora, and more importantly is incongruous with our religion. Well said! -
