  1. Exactly. Am with you on this one NG. It seems there is a lot of mis-information going on in these threads and the wider internet. Like you, I just hope there is someone out there who will tell us the truth in an evenhanded manner. dhulQarnayn  Republic Of California

  3. Copyright AFP 2008, AFP An Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes and an insult at George W. Bush, without hitting him, as the US president was shaking hands with the Iraqi premier at his Baghdad office on Sunday. As the two leaders met in Nuri al-Maliki's private office, a journalist sitting in the third row jumped up, shouting: "It is the farewell kiss, you dog," and threw his shoes one after the other towards Bush. Maliki made a protective gesture towards the US president, who ducked and was not hit. The journalist, Muntazer al-Zaidi from Al-Baghdadia channel which broadcasts from Cairo, was frogmarched from the room by security staff, an AFP journalist said. Soles of shoes are considered the ultimate insult in Arab culture. After Saddam Hussein's statue was toppled in Baghdad in April 2003, many onlookers beat the statue's face with their soles. Some Iraqi journalists stood up to apologise. The White House said Bush ducked to avoid the first shoe, while the second narrowly missed the president. Bush said: "Thanks for apologising on behalf of the Iraqi people. It doesn't bother me. If you want the facts, it was a size 10 shoe that he threw". Playing down the incident, the president later added: "I don't know what the guy's cause is... I didn't feel the least bit threatened by it."
  4. LOL@ "All I can report is it is a size 10". Kudos to Bush that the best his so-called "terrorists" could do to him was throw a pair of size 10s at him. As a former baseball player, I don't think it was too hard for the President to duck 'em. dhulQarnayn  Republic Of California
  5. Bush Ducks Shoes Thrown in Iraqi Leader's Office By Edwin Chen Dec. 14 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush ducked two shoes thrown at him by an unidentified man during a press conference in the Iraqi prime minister's office to mark the signing of a security agreement. Bush wasn't hit by the shoes, which both sailed over his head after they were thrown one after the other. The president shrugged and said "I'm OK" after the incident in Baghdad today. "All I can report is it is a size 10," Bush said afterwards. In Arab culture, throwing shoes is a grave show of disrespect. The man shouted an Arabic phrase, which an Iraqi present translated as "this is a farewell kiss, dog." After U.S. troops pulled down a statue of former dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003, Iraqi bystanders tossed shoes at it, according to news reports at the time. Bush said today's incident was an example of free speech in a democracy. The man threw the shoes from about 25 feet away as Bush, standing with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, made formal remarks before the signing of the Iraqi-U.S. agreement. Maliki tried to block the second thrown shoe as it flew toward Bush, according to video of the incident shown on television. Wrestled to Ground The shoe-thrower, who was in a group of journalists, was wrestled to the ground and taken away. "This is the end," shouted the man, later identified by the Associated Press as Muntadar al-Zeidi, a correspondent for Al-Baghdadia television, an Iraqi-owned station based in Cairo, Egypt. At the signing ceremony, Bush said a free and democratic Iraq will now become "a force for freedom" and a "source of stability in a volatile region." "There is still more work to be done," Bush said. "The war is not over." The president said that with the agreement, "and the courage of the Iraqi people, and the Iraqi troops, and American troops and civilian personnel, it is decisively on its way to being won." Bush arrived today in Baghdad on a surprise visit -- his last to Iraq as commander-in-chief -- to celebrate the agreement, thank U.S. troops and meet with Iraqi leaders. It was Bush's fourth visit to a nation transformed by the U.S.-led war he started in 2003. It follows three weeks after Iraq's parliament approved an accord with the U.S. that provides for the withdrawal of American troops by the end of 2011. Obama's Plan President-elect Barack Obama has said one of his first acts as commander-in-chief would be to direct his military commanders to begin withdrawing troops "as quickly as we can" while maintaining stability in Iraq, ensuring the safety of U.S. troops and preventing a resurgence of terrorism. The president has made three previous unannounced trips to Iraq -- on Thanksgiving 2003, June 13, 2006, and Sept. 3, 2007. While those earlier trips were intended largely to bolster troop morale and shore up domestic support for the unpopular war, Bush's latest Iraq visit amounted to a valedictory appearance. He leaves office on Jan. 20. Bush later today addressed more than 1,000 troops at Camp Victory, the staging area in Baghdad for U.S. forces. The surge of additional U.S. troops sent to Iraq early last year to quell sectarian violence has been "one of the greatest successes in the history of the U.S. military," Bush said.

  7. ^^^ What a silly reply. This is not treason and has nothing to do with treason and only proves that your opinions are trivial. Cabdulahi Yusuf fought very bravely against your so-called "number one enemy of Somalia" when it really mattered. Now just because, like the SNM and USC fighters, he fought the socialist dictatorship of Siyad Barre(a man) does not mean he waged war against Somalia(the country). Who would have thought that fighting the Siyad Barre regime that overthrew the ONLY democratically elected government Somalia has ever had is a form of treason...... Damn! these naysayer's comments get more and more ridiculously incongruous by the day. These folks are so terrified of the President that they are starting to become delusional. I think opposing the TFG is foolish, but I'd never accuse you of treason for NOT supporting the one viable entity that I think is capable of returning Somalia from the abyss of civil conflict. You desperately need to grow up and understand that the fact you don't agree with someone's politics doesn't mean they are traitors. And I might add, even if AY was a traitor and had commited treason, what on earth can a fadhi kudirir like yourself do about it, huh? dhulQarnayn  Republic Of California
  8. To ThierY: Odayga wuxuu ku kalsoonyahay barlamaanka iney ku raacayaan arintaan. I don't think he would have put himself out there if he wasn't confident of the support of a majority in the Parliament. AFP reported the following: Yusuf expressed confidence that parliament would validate his decision. "Most of the parliamentarians will endorse my decision to dismiss the prime minister," Yusuf said. "Should parliament reject my desire to look for a new prime minister, I will comply with their decision and the current government will continue its tenure," he added. According to the transitional federal charter, the president alone does not have the power to sack the prime minister, but needs the parliament's approval. dhulQarnayn  Republic Of California

  10. Strong Somalia needed to defeat pirates: France 9 hours ago MANAMA (AFP) — Piracy in the Gulf of Aden will only be defeated by a strong government in Somalia, the commander of the French naval operation in the Indian Ocean said on Sunday. "We will not end this phenomenon unless we have a Somali government that has the means to act on its territory to fight piracy," Vice-Admiral Gerard Valin said on the sidelines of a regional security conference organized by Bahrain and the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed on Sunday announced he had sacked Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein and his government, the latest development in their power struggle. Valin also hailed the European Union naval mission in the Gulf of Aden as a major step in battling the surge in attacks and hijackings by ransom-hunting Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden, a crucial trade route used by 12 percent of the world's maritime trade and 30 percent of its oil. "It is really a leap forward, since this is the first time that a coalition has been formed with the mission of fighting piracy," he told AFP. The EU mission Atalante, a coalition that groups eight EU countries, began operations off the coast of Somalia on December 8 to try to stem the growing piracy, including the hijacking of a Saudi supertanker last month. Yemeni Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Hassan said at the conference on Sunday that his country was prepared to provide full support within the framework of UN resolutions. Yemen shares the Gulf of Aden with Somalia. However Ahmad al-Kibsi, a political science professor at the University of Sanaa who attended the conference, said his country alone, or even aided by its neighbours, would not be able to fight off the pirates. "We need international support," Kibsi said. Somali pirates have carried out more than 100 attacks in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean since the start of this year. Speaking at the conference on Saturday, US Defence Secretary Robert Gates acknowledged the difficulties of fighting piracy in a region which covers more than one million square kilometers (368 thousand square miles). "We are dealing with an area of approximately one million square miles. It's three times the size of the Gulf of Mexico," Gates said. "I believe with the level of information that we have now we are not in a position to do that kind of attack on a land-based source of piracy." The pirates still hold at least 15 foreign vessels and more than 300 crew members. NATO has also dispatched naval forces to the region, joining other national navies in place, but increasingly bold and well-equipped pirates have continued their attacks. dhulQarnayn  Republic Of California

  17. ^^^But unlike those 'other' religions, Islam does NOT condone the actions of these deviants. I bet--if you looked closely-- you will find specific texts in the Bible and Bhagavad Gita that directed them to such actions, but in the Holy Quraan, there are NO Ayats ligitimizing the murder of innocents. We need to distinguish between criminals who WANT to use Islam as an excuse for their crimes on the one hand and followers of the bona fide teachings of our Holy Prophet(PBUH) on the other hand. dhulQarnayn  Repulic Of California

  22. Well my real name is Faarax Geedi and I served as a labo-xidigle in the Somali National Army. Why do you think Somalia lost the war in 1978? Gen George S. Patton once said, "a good battle plan that you act on today can be better than a perfect one tomorrow." I have believe we lost because we did very little planning and never took seriously any what-if scenerios that could arise, and did. Do you have any idea about the somali casualties in such war? I don't remember the exact figure, but the ethios lost more soldiers than we did. As for you hearing that we lost all those tanks and air power--I believe you heard wrong. The only positive thing the leadership of Said Barre did was call for a withdrawal as soons as we realised the soviets help for the ethiopians was very considerable. And that saved most of our military. dhulQarnayn  Republic Of California
