  4. mEMORIES. Very important indeed. How would you avoid the temptation of fire, if you couldnt rember that it burned you before. How could you Go forward without rembering from your mistakes. How could you rember how to Get home if you forgot your Path back. And as your rightly say we retain both Good and Bad memories from as far back as our minds can rember. No memories i think are the life expriences that are what makes us what we are, and so they are curical to what makes us what we are.

  6. That will be the day. I find the total lack of interest in child/youth development by our supposed "representatives" (i.e. Somali communities) very disturbing. True. If you told me 5 yrs ago that i would be thinkin of being @ the fore-front of the efforts to better my local somali communty i would have told you that your we having a laugh. But thats the position that i may find myself soon. To put it bulntly no one from the older generation gives a S*** about the somali youth, certainly in my area anyway and presumable in most areas too. why? well i dont no and am not interested in waiting on the answer. I have watched with admiration and some guilt i might add. somali youth as young as 17 organize themselves, and host sporting activites. If they can do this so successfully then am sure with some small encouragement, and some role models (especially for the very youg ones 10-16) they sky would be the limits for the Achievment and Improvement.

  10. Whats up fellow nomads i thought i would out this up here and see what my ppl could come up with to feel in the spaces in Brackets (example provided in the brackets) simple Delete the txt there and add your own . Printed on Monday, March 03, 2003 @ 19:42:50 EST ( "The prerequisite to speaking" ) By Steven Salaita YellowTimes.org Columnist (United States) (YellowTimes.org) – A pernicious and perhaps asinine, albeit unstated, sensibility has lately pervaded discourse of all sorts on the Middle East. That sensibility can be called the burden of qualification. I speak about the pressure in the United States to denounce certain Arab actions or leaders before denouncing American and Israeli aggression. We have seen the denunciation employed thousands of times in the past few years. A typical example looks like this: "Of course Saddam is a brutal tyrant whose actions I detest, but I oppose war because [insert reason here]." Or this: "Yasser Arafat is despicable, but Ariel Sharon [insert criticism here]." Or one of my favorites: "I unconditionally condemn suicide bombings, but Israel [insert anti-occupation slogan here]." These formulations are disturbing because they assume (not so tacitly) that Arabs only have agency in the context of American morality. They also insinuate that Arabs and Arab Americans are illegitimate commentators unless they acknowledge their own shortcomings before condemning American and Israeli perfidy. This fact wouldn't be so distressing if numerous Arab Americans (and others) didn't acquiesce to the standards constructed by Zionists and American hawks, the two main advocates of Arab dispossession. Most Arab Americans do acquiesce, though, and so we are left with serious problems. The solution is short and simple: No more. Nobody should speak based on the rules set forth by those who willfully tolerate -- nay, advocate -- the destruction of an entire people (i.e., Zionists). Zionists and pro-war Americans are the ones who should make qualifications before they speak. It might sound something like this: "I think that Jews are superior biologically to Palestinians and should therefore receive a privileged status while the Palestinians live in misery; by the way, here is my take on the peace process." Or this: "American lives are worth more than Iraqi lives; here, therefore, is my opinion about the impending war." Or the inverse equivalent of Arab American qualifications: "I am a blatant racist because I support Israel's occupation, but [insert apologia for the occupation here]." It would, of course, appear quite ridiculous to most of us if pro-Israel and pro-war Americans qualified their opinions in this manner. Why, then, do we make such qualifications, which ultimately amount to a pathetic capitulation to the demands made of us by the very people who support the slaughter of Iraqis and Palestinians? Those qualifications essentially reduce us to beggars because they denote uncritical subservience: "If I justify your aggression, may I have a voice?" If we eliminate the qualifications, then we are left with truth, with a voice on our own terms, rather than with a watered-down version of reality that, in the end, can't do much more than make our antagonists marvel at our complicity in their belligerence. Let's take it from the top, without the burden of qualification: "Of course George Bush is a brutal tyrant whose actions I detest, and that's why I oppose his war." Or this: "Ariel Sharon is a bully and a bloody war criminal, and I don't care about much else because Israelis have nothing worth hearing as long as they continue to legitimize him." Or the one everybody seems scared to mention: "I unconditionally condemn Israel's flagrant oppression and ethnic cleansing and will be glad to discuss suicide bombing as long as its context, Israel's occupation, is discussed first." Yes, it is that simple. Our prerequisite to speaking should be truth, not the appeasement of those who condition truth to mystify aggression. 12. Bush's Muslim propaganda chief quits U.S. official: 'She didn't do anything that worked' Tuesday, March 4, 2003 Posted: 9:29 AM EST (1429 GMT) Charlotte Beers joined the State Department shortly after September 11, 2001. WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The mastermind of U.S. public diplomacy efforts in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, resigned from her State Department post Monday. Charlotte Beers, a former top advertising executive who joined the department shortly after September 11, is leaving shortly "for health reasons," Secretary of State Colin Powell said in a written statement. Another U.S. official told CNN her departure was connected to problems she encountered in the job. Beers, 67, took office to spearhead a public diplomacy campaign aimed at winning the hearts and minds of the Muslim world. But she attracted little praise for her efforts, and was attacked in the media, by various think tanks and by members of Congress. U.S. officials also complained privately that though Beers spent a lot of money on slickly produced media ads, she did not understand her target audience: Muslim-majority countries where anti-American sentiment runs high. "She was failing," the official said. "She didn't do anything that worked." Beers, whose title was undersecretary of state for public diplomacy, acknowledged to a Senate committee Thursday that her task was daunting, The Associated Press reported. "The gap between who we are and how we wish to be seen, and how we are in fact seen, is frighteningly wide," Beers told a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing. Beers' "Shared Values" campaign -- television ads portraying American Muslims in their daily life -- was criticized in the few countries it was introduced. The series was eventually suspended when several Arab countries refused to broadcast the ads. "The administration waited until the fallout from the Shared Values campaign ended," the official said, citing several critical media reports about Beers. "But we have been looking for an honorable exit for her for some time." The official said the White House, which has established its Office of Global Communications to distribute U.S. propaganda as the United States readies for a possible war with Iraq, "has been distancing itself from Charlotte since day one." According to her State Department biography, Beers was the only person to serve as chairman of two of the top 10 worldwide advertising agencies: J. Walter Thompson and Ogilvy & Mather. Beers' resignation will take effect in about two weeks. Patricia Harrison, assistant secretary of state for education and cultural affairs, will temporarily fill Beers' post, the official said. 15. ..the youthful militants of peace, who question the decadent values of domination and challenge the mightiest on their faces ---- against their designs of invading weaker nations My Favorite Martian.. talking about Aggression 3/2/2003 - Political Social - Article Ref: IV0302-1871 By: S. A. Abidi Iviews* - "Much of the good that man has done, has been undone by the aggression inflicted by him on his own kind. While he has grown in his capacity of understanding and using things around him, he remains persistently blind to his own faults. Starting from the hairy creature, emerging from the cave wielding a club thirty thousand years ago, right up to a modern Yale graduate with a nuclear arsenal at his disposal, his emotional apparatus remains practically the same." These provocative remarks came from the little green man whom I found perched up on top of my bookshelf yesterday. If men from Mars are known for their cold objectivity, this extra terrestrial (ET) lived up to the reputation. He continued: "Although cleverest amongst all the animals inhabiting the planet, why is he the only one who inflicts pain and kills his own species and destroys the environment his life depends upon? Despite being the only creature endowed with consciousness on earth, why is he incapable of introspection and self-correction?" He went on "The only change I notice, is that the methods and forms of aggression have become more effective and sophisticated as the humankind advanced. Bullet is not the only weapon of aggression any more. You can also control the world by killing with kindness. Give clever development loans to the rulers who surrender their sovereignty to you, and let them embezzle, making their poor subjects to pay back. Save their shaky thrones in return of the resources they sell to you cheap, and allow them to tyrannize their people. Stir up revolts, proxy wars and civil commotion using covert methods, and bring down the leaders who refuse to comply with your agenda. Anybody, who fails to see aggression in the method, will see plenty of it in the results. Millions can be seen dying of hunger, malnutrition and sickness caused by poverty in failing economies. Thousands are killing each other using arms, mysteriously supplied to them from the developed world." "You do not mention terrorism which is the burning issue today!" I wondered. "Of course terrorism is another form of aggression outside the pale of law. It is practiced by states as well as people, and is meant to coerce each other for a political or economic end. The difference is that the states perpetrate the crime with impunity and get away with murders, while the individuals get hanged for retaliating against it", he promptly replied. "Both kill innocent people. Unless both are held accountable to justice and punished, this tit-for-tat vendetta will continue." he added. "Terrorist groups are essentially the aggrieved people of the client states of the superpowers. Such states, by their inability to defend the interest of their own people, have effectively privatized war by default ...( Eduardo Galeano). Finding no justice at home or in any international forum, they are driven to militancy to make themselves heard. They kill and get killed, accepting punishment in advance, while telling the world that the life it offered to them was woefully not worth living. 'People versus Superpower', is a new phenomenon that has appeared after the near demise of the state in a Unipolar world. It has to be recognized and codified under an updated Geneva Convention and the International Court of Justice, which are restricted to dealing with 'State versus State' disputes. Why on earth you men cannot see the obvious? " "I still cannot find an answer." I said hesitatingly "Every one justifies his own aggression to counter other's aggression and no one agrees on who started it. Every war is claimed to be in the interest of peace. I suggest you read these highly respected scholars who have spent their lifetime in investigating the human mind and behavior. Perhaps tomorrow morning we can resume our dialogue." The Martian had assimilated all that was offered with his supersonic perception, and was ready with his comments the next morning: "I find different scholars addressing the issue from different points of view. One is the instictivist school, founded by Darwin and led by ethologists like Konrad Lorenz and Desmond Morris. They believe that aggression is innate in animals, including humans, which was developed as a useful instinct during evolution. In the wild, it was used for defending territory and improvement of the species by selection, but never for killing members of the same species. However, social inhibitions and controls of the organized human society, have subsequently distorted this natural urge to destructiveness. This can be corrected by channeling the instinct into constructive activities through a new approach of education, sublimation and imprinting rational responsibility on the mind of the child. The youth, as they question the old values of their parents' generation, can be made aware of the new challenges faced by the mankind and their militant enthusiasm directed towards resolving them. So far, the demagogues have been tapping their energies to serve their vested interests. " "The behaviorist school, led by the B. F. Skinner on the other hand, denies existence of aggressive instincts and believe that human behavior is a product of the social conditioning that man undergoes while growing up in his society. Accordingly, behavior can be changed, 'by changing the conditions of which it is a function'. A 'technology of behavior' need to be developed that will use positive reinforcement to recondition human behavior. That can lead to a new culture, where greater good of others becomes a virtue and pure self interest a sin. " "Erich Fromm, a great mind in contemporary philosophy, finds these approaches reductionist, and based exclusively on either the 'hardware' aspect of nature or the 'software' of nurture. What they altogether ignore are those great qualities, which make man stand out amongst animals. Although accusing man of killing his own kind, they have not given him the credit of laying down his own life for the love of others, a non-instinctual act for any animal. It is not an urge to kill, but love for life that is man's true socio-biological heritage, which is lost in the acquisitive distortions of modern times. It has to be rediscovered and nourished trough genuine freedom and doing away with all forms of exploitative controls. That would need radical changes in the existing social and political structures that are responsible for tolerating and even promoting the destructive aggression that the world suffer from." "The rationalists like Bertrand Russell warn that the technology of mass killing has excelled to a level of terminal efficiency and puts the future of mankind at stake. The existing political forms are obsolete and unable to avert the catastrophe. Reason is the human attribute that opened up the doors of knowledge. It can be used for banishing war as effectively as it was employed for developing weapons of mass destruction. A number of centuries-old enemies in Europe have succeeded in seeing the last of wars, by deciding to pool up their dignity, freedom and resources instead of fighting over them. There is no reason why, peace zones like the European Union cannot be replicated and eventually consolidated to cover the entire world. The answer lies in working towards a World Government with universal disarmament of the state, which can be built upon the foundation of the United Nations." "So what is your conclusion", I asked earnestly. "Although your scholars may differ on the roots of aggression, they all agree that its fruits have turned poisonous. What passed for a sovereign right so far, may clash with the well being of the world. If some nation continue to pollute excessively, that will result in an environmental disaster of global magnitude. If they build nuclear arsenals to demand subjugation from the rest of the world, a surprise retaliation may make the planet inhabitable. Nations have to re-learn living together as a world community, the same way as the individuals learnt to live in a civil society. Each one having the right to property, but accepting punishment for depriving others of the same; allowed to grow strong, but barred from intimidating the weak; free to accumulate wealth, but surrendering portion of it for the less fortunate. They must be held accountable to international justice and submit to its verdict the same way as people abide by the laws they frame in order to live in peace, or indeed live at all. This calls for shedding the old culture of rule of the strongest to a new one of rule of law." I could see a ray of hope but had seen enough of torment inflicted by man over man, not to jump to conclusion, and asked: "But who on earth is going to design the new culture and when?" "Luckily the dream of Utopia is not as alien to man, as I am to you " added the ET with a glint in his eyes "and new culture is part of it. At present the profit- makers dominate the scene, and they have made a virtue of consumption and acquisition, which necessitates unwarranted exploitation of human and natural resources. Culture is nobody's monopoly, it is a drama written by its own actors who change the plot as it is played out. The designers of a postmodern culture are already there and can be seen at work rallying for world peace, human rights, and poverty alleviation in the world capitals and in their respective fields of action. Some soft pedal their message of love and peace in the dreams of humanity ---- the mothers who sing lullabies of flowers and fairies to beautify the imagination of their young ones; the story -tellers, the poets and the artists whose creativity gives birth to awareness of life and compassion, and the teachers who nurture the minds in their charge to help them decide in favor of peace when war seem imminent; and the promoters of sports and inventors of games who offer outlet to emotions and training to young minds. Others are the enthusiasts ---- the scholars who devote their lives in discovering the cause and effect of human behavior; the scientists who foretell the ugly consequences of aggression, the citizen who refuses to buy from a polluter and the exploiter, and the law-makers who contrive barriers against covert oppression. Last but not the least, are the youthful militants of peace, who question the decadent values of domination and challenge the mightiest on their faces ---- against their designs of invading weaker nations; for what they are doing to the environment of the world and economies of the underdeveloped nations; and for what they are not doing for the starving masses around the world. Millions like you must identify yourselves with them, get organized to dethrone the culture of selfish and exploitative nationalism and replace it with the mission of global well being. The citizens of the world need to join these designers of new culture, to support and encourage them to gather momentum and to win." Before I could interject "But..." The Martian had disappeared, perhaps to prod another confused mind into action. The author is an independent commentator based in Karachi, Pakistan
  16. Yep it is a sad reflection on all so-called leaders of the Arabian Gulf states and the majority of the rest elswhere, that everyone else but the camels have been quick to denounce american calls to war whilst they remain dithering and Impotent. MAHATHIR MOHAMAD is, as a friend pointed out to me a muslim and a Real MAN. unfortunately the same cant be said of the Arab leaders who are anythin but.
  17. We're yet to witness the greatest Somali. There hasn't been any as far as I am concerned. yep from my limited knowledge i agree with you there bro..........how can they be a GREAT Somali.......when we find ourselves where we are @ today. Nop the great somali's that i no off are my Parents.
  18. Sterotypical Opinions, Gets in Within.. ...Hurts hearts of millions yet not considered a sin.. ........why is that? I know it is a sin to Back Bite someone. Sterotyping someone......well for some of us they hold to be true in most instance. I am not saying it is a good thing to do, far from it. However it is the case that you retain within you such sterotyps with the encounters you make, or indeed you disragard them. Am not an anhtropologist..........but it is the case from my expierances, certainly that most asains in Uk (london) are doing quite well for themselves, my hats of to them. Most Black youths of various backgrounds, ethinic and religous are falling away in huge numbers, and are enagaged in many Distructive activities, although this is mainly the boys with girls catchin up very quickly. Why is that? Most white ppl you encounter have some issue or other, by hey who doesnt. Most Faggots are Faggots disgusting and un-natural, Same Goes for Dykes. And Most ppl do carry and act on the Steroytipcal views that exist within themselves, me being an example. I wouldnt exactly agree that the world would be boring without them..........but lets face it we are human beings, totally and utterly falable, we somali have unfortunately many steroytipcal views of africans and of ourselves. It is the degree to which we accept them to be true and pre judge someone is how we can soften our rough edges. And to that i fear allah and always attempt not to pre judge anyone whether White/Black/Brown.........Muslim or Christain, Hindu or Jew and whatever else.
  19. Is the circumstances that control how one behaves?. Well i can say, thankfully, that am not speaking from expirence here..........however being a veteran of countless documentaries and History Programs i conclude, using my common sense aswell, yes. The circumstance do really controls how you behave to a great extent. Of course your own principle and Morality come heavily into the mix. However for the examples you mention contemplation of the size, nature, and duration and indeed consequence, those are the crital facts that someone caught up in such an event would be facing up too and contemplating. It is in this reality that ppl then make their choice, to flee or to stay, to defend my neibour or to save my family and so on. So perhaps it isnt really as profound as Good or Evil it is?
  20. hi guys it is ignorant to blame someone who really want to do for his people the best he can, i mean Bush is an american and he fights for american intrest,I think we have to blame those who do not care of their people,I mean the arab leaders who absolutely deniye the right to speak or even discuss their lacal afairs. I think Bush coul not attack or even mention to attack iraq or any other arab country if he do not have the suport of pupet arab leaders, like saddam himself. I couldnt agree more with u saxiib. If we look @ this issue in the most simplest and perhaps crudest terms, then we can clearly see that Bush influenced by his zionist and oil lobbies and other groups, is fighting hard for there interests and agenda's be it obviously control of oil and other scarce resources in the area, fighting the proxy-war for israel and their zionist asspirations, and de-islamizing ppl there with their pupptery regimes. The fact is most if not all Arab countries have been silent participents to this. If i can use the anoluge of the Bank robber (america)and the Get away driver (arabian gluf states)perhaps that would illuminate my argument further. The fact is they fight, often publicly and show no interesting in displaying a united front ( Arab summit ), even if it be a facard why? because they have all to loose by facing up to there respective populations by Ostracising themselves from power, and by offending their american masters by not being willing to allow use of air and sea ports and bases within their territory. So before we righly look to blame Bush and his cronies for the Impierlist plans, ppl should look to blame the countries who have allowed such abuse of power ( Turkey ) and weakness in the face of such on-going hostility towards Arabs and more relevantly muslims world wide.

    Subhana'Allah

I saw you yesterday as you began your daily chores. You awoke without a prayer. As a matter of fact, you didn't even bless your meals, or pray before going to bed last night. You are so unthankful, I like that about you. I cannot tell you how glad I am that you have not changed your way of living, Fool, you are mine. Remember, you and I have been going steady for years, and I still don't love you yet. As a matter of fact, I hate you, because I hate God. I am only using you to get even with God. He kicked me out of heaven, and I'm going to use you as long as possible to pay him back. Hey thx for posting that up here. It is a very good reminder of just how we can easlity neglet our daily rembrenace of allah and how we can be so ungrateful for the blessing we have in our lives.
  22. Salam calayakum Nomads. Just like to first thank the admin time for gettin the site back up and running its gr8 to have S.O.L a part of my daily routine once more. I would just like to ask are u (admin) currently working on the Chat appelet? Thats the last piece Remining in this otherwise Perfect Somali Meduim. How many of you guys did actually use the chat regularly or find the chatroom a place where the frequented last time around?
  23. Well i wont Hazard a guess as you are probably looking for a wel argued and concise answer. Howvere i could refer you to a similar debate we had @ teh end of last year entitled Islam and its approach towards Democracy
  24. sister ameena, i agree with you 100%, but think of this. In our youth centre we have 7 youth workers, 4 blacks and 3 somalis, the somalis are all at uni and are therefore at uni everyday except for one who is both at uni and on placement at the same time. Every mon, wed, thur and fri the youth centre is open so we need to be present between 7-10m. We have sessions such as drug awareness, law-police topics etc, sex and in general just be there for them for any advice. These are good kids, most of the troublesome ones have problems at school at home and all. We take them on trips and even foreign trips. I feel that we are providing a vital support system for the youths in order for them to have a vision and hopefully aspire with our help. I'm just saying alot more need to take the advantage of having such a youth system available to them! For real Northner thats the nxt step we need to take, those of us who have managed to reach and complete uni. Inshallah i myself will get involved with this avenue soon in my area aswell.
  25. Sectioner that was amazing. impressive play on words using the Nomads names. "Your life style is a painted picture you just a mixture Of average Mc and a handicap human being" Monk....an unfortunate and poorly chosen last three words saxiib. Do not i repeat Do not take the mikey of disability, lest it happens to you bro.
