  3. Four-Star Roma SteamRoll Juve Serie A Week 20 - 8/2/04 (20.30) Roma 4 - 0 Juventus Dacourt 13 ®, Totti pen 53 ®, Cassano 70, 85 ® Stadio Olimpico -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A stunning Roma performance has steamrollered Scudetto holders Juventus after Paolo Montero's red card and a saved penalty. Scudetto showdowns don't get much bigger than this as the two joint-second teams face off for the right to race off after runaway leaders Milan. There was a big shock for Bianconeri fans ahead of kick-off, as captain Alessandro Del Piero took his seat in the stands due to a muscular twinge during the warm-up. Marco Di Vaio - who scored both goals in the 2-2 draw between these teams in Turin earlier this season when he substituted Del Piero - stepped in to partner David Trezeguet. Roma adopted a new 4-4-2 system with Antonio Cassano and Francesco Totti upfront, introducing Christian Panucci and Jonathan Zebina to the defence. The Giallorossi had a good start and Cristian Chivu's curling free kick was fingertipped round the post by Gianluigi Buffon. On the resulting corner Olivier Dacourt gathered on the edge of the box and placed an angled drive into the far corner. The game sparked into life and Mauro Camoranesi's chip just failed to reach Di Vaio, but on the counter-attack Francesco Totti's magnificent half-volley slammed the underside of the bar. Pavel Nedved went on a strong run and his fierce drive was just wide of Ivan Pelizzoli's goal. David Trezeguet became a makeshift defender with a crucial headed clearance on Chivu's powerful effort. At the other end Di Vaio nodded a Camoranesi free kick wide, but there were timid penalty appeals for Lilian Thuram's unorthodox challenge on Antonio Cassano following a Paolo Montero error. Di Vaio picked up a knock and was replaced just before the half-time break by the explosive Fabrizio Miccoli. But Roma started the second half in confident fashion and a last ditch challenge prevented Emerson getting a clean shot on Totti's assist. It came as little surprise when on 52 minutes Paolo Montero brought down Cassano in the box and Pierluigi Collina inevitably pointed to the spot. Francesco Totti stepped up and turned his penalty in off the inside of the upright. The tension rose and Montero saw red for a second bookable offence just moments after he gave away the penalty. The Uruguayan hacked at Totti's ankle and it could easily have been a straight red. Bizarrely, Juventus have had at least one player sent off in this fixture for the last four years running. Roma were on cloud nine and Buffon parried a powerful Amantino Mancini effort from the edge of the box. Miccoli refused to give in and Pelizzoli was forced into a risky rush off his line to clear from the former Perugia man. The goalkeeper then plucked an Igor Tudor header out of the air from another Miccoli set-piece. But the home side was running the show and Cassano skipped past two defenders before blasting over the bar. Miccoli is a set-piece specialist and Pelizzoli scrambled his fierce curling effort clear at the near post. The young goalkeeper also missed the resulting corner kick, but no Juve players were ready to take advantage. Instead Roma made the pressure pay off and took their lead to three goals with Antonio Cassano. The starlet was left unmarked to sidefoot in a deflected Mancini cross from six yards as Juve's disastrous defensive record took another twist. There was controversy soon after, as Collina awarded a penalty to Juventus for Chivu's push on Alessio Tacchinardi. The Frenchman stepped up and fired his central spot-kick straight at Pelizzoli's feet. The scoreline could have been extended further, but Buffon batted away a fierce Totti free kick and Christian Panucci turned a header over. It got even worse in the final minutes when Cassano was left completely unmarked in the centre to nod in Mancini's sweeping centre following a well-worked team move. The youngster was booked for over-celebrating as he broke the corner flag and it had to be replaced. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Roma: Pelizzoli; Panucci, Zebina, Samuel, Chivu; Lima, Emerson, Dacourt (De Rossi 91), Mancini; Cassano (Carew 87), Totti (D'Agostino 89) Juventus: Buffon; Thuram, Legrottaglie, Montero, Zambrotta; Camoranesi (Appiah 67), Tacchinardi, Conte (Tudor 57); Nedved; Di Vaio (Miccoli 45), Trezeguet Ref: Collina Sent off: Montero 55 (J) Missed penalty: Trezeguet 74 (J) ------------------------------------------------------------------

Roma rejected Totti offers Friday 6 February, 2004 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Roma boss Fabio Capello has revealed that they have rejected numerous big money bids for Francesco Totti. The tactician made the claim to a Spanish radio station as speculation suggesting that Real Madrid want the Italian star continues. "They are not the only ones interested," Capello told Radio Cadena Cope. "We’ve received a number of incredible offers even if I can’t reveal from which clubs." The Italian has been praised by Real sporting director Jorge Valdano and Zinedine Zidane in the last week but Capello insists Totti is staying in the capital. "Francesco is Roma’s best player and he will remain here," added the former Milan tactician. "I’m aware that you never know what could happen in this game but it is my hope to always have him in Rome. "I understand that Real look to buy the best players in the world but they must understand that Totti is to Roma what Raul is to Real. He’s an emblem of the club. "I’m convinced that Francesco will prove his ability in the summer while wearing the Azzurri shirt. Euro 2004 will be his consecration." Yet Totti is not the only big name player being linked with a move away at the end of the season. Whispers suggest that Roma could be assessing a bid for Christian Vieri. "He is one of the most important Italian and European players around right now," noted Capello. "But I’m sure he will stay at Inter as they are building a side for the future."

Zidane in Totti call Thursday 5 February, 2004 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Roma sensation Francesco Totti would be a success at Real Madrid according to Zinedine Zidane. The No 10 is being continually talked about as a summer target for the Spaniards and Zidane has today praised the Roman. "Totti is a very good player," said the former Juventus star. "He is a fundamental element for his club and he proves every year that he is Italy’s best. "I don’t want to comment too much on him but I believe that he would do well if he played for Real Madrid." Zidane’s words will only add to the speculation that Real are keen on the attacking midfielder after the comments of Real sporting director Jorge Valdano yesterday. "Totti is Zidane’s heir," the 1986 World Cup winner said. "He is a great player. "Totti plays around 10 metres further forward than Zidane so they could easily play in the same side. That would be some spectacle." Meanwhile, Zidane was then asked for his opinion on Thierry Henry and Paolo Maldini who have also been linked with the club. "Henry is an extraordinary player but I’ve not tried to convince him to move to Spain," added the Frenchman. "Maldini is simply a magnificent defender, no matter how old he is." --------------------------------------------------------------------- so everyone inclduing the great man are exegrating about Totti??
  11. i dont know bro, mind you what i do know is that Italian League is teh hardest in the world and i cant see Milan pulling away so earlier. I do hope either Roma or Juve win this week, a draw in that crunch game would put milan in a comfort zone assuming the way win. But am still confident winger  we had our purple patch so too did Juve right at the begining of the season and now milan is having one also, but they will start to draw and losing again, and their fixture list towards teh end of teh season is more strenious than Roma's n Juventus. Anywa your other team is not looking to bad huh, alot of good young signings. Much is mad by arsenal fans about reyes n barnet or what ever his name is not to mention half a dzens other baquets . But Man u have bought alot of great young players, if only Roma could have the budget to do the same  .
  12. Somalia deal 'must be enforced' A peace deal is emerging after more than a decade of fighting Kenya has urged all sides not to derail the Somali peace process it has been encouraging with reconciliation talks. The Kenyan foreign minister said any attempt to frustrate the advances brokered by his country would be met with "decisive punitive measures". Earlier this week Somalia's warlords and politicians agreed to establish a new parliament. The deal paves the way for the setting up of the first recognised national government in Somalia for 13 years. Since the fall of President Siad Barre, Somalia has had no central authority and been wracked by civil war. 'Restraint' Kenyan Foreign Minister Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka said that there was widespread support for the peace process. "The international community will not stand by and watch these efforts undermined or derailed by any group or leader bent on promoting their selfish and narrow interest." Q&A: Somali peace deal The recent agreement would reunite Puntland with the rest of Somalia, six years after it declared itself autonomous. In his warnings, Mr Musyoka referred specifically to Puntland and the breakaway republic of Somaliland. He called on both their leaders to "exercise maximum restraint by reducing tension that could escalate into a fresh conflict". Mr Musyoka was speaking on behalf of the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (Igad), the six-nation group mediating the peace process. The talks in Kenya are the 14th attempt to secure ------------------------------------------------------------- There is alot of trumpeting going, but i dont see much hands raised is this yet another false down??

  15. It would also be a good occasion for the American news media to dispense with Allah and commit themselves to God. Sunday is one of the most important holidays in Islam: Id al-Adha, the feast celebrating Abraham's faith and willingness to sacrifice his son to God. It would also be a good occasion for the American news media to dispense with Allah and commit themselves to God. Here's what I mean: Abraham, the ur-monotheist, represents the shared history, and shared God, of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Many Christians and Jews are aware of this common past, but seem to have a tough time internalizing it. Lt. Gen. William Boykin, a deputy under secretary of defense, made headlines last year suggesting that Allah is not "a real God" and that Muslims worship an idol. Last month in Israel, Pat Robertson said that today's world conflicts concern "whether Hubal, the moon god of Mecca known as Allah, is supreme, or whether the Judeo-Christian Jehovah, God of the Bible, is supreme." Never mind that Hubal was actually a pre-Islamic pagan god that Muhammad rejected. Mr. Robertson's comments, like those of General Boykin, illuminate a widespread misconception - one that the news media has inadvertently helped to promote. So here's a suggestion: when journalists write about Muslims, or translate from Arabic, Urdu, Farsi or other languages, they should translate "Allah" as "God," too. A minor point? Perhaps not. Last August the Washington Post Web site posed this question to readers: "Do you think that Muslims, Christians and Jews all pray to the same God?" One Muslim respondent wrote yes, each of the three major monotheistic faiths "pray to the God of Abraham." Christian respondents, however, were equivocal or hostile to the notion. "Jews pray to Yahweh," one Virginia woman wrote. "As a Christian, I pray to the same God." But she insisted that "Muslims pray to Allah. Allah is not the God of Abraham." This woman might be surprised that Christian Arabs use "Allah" for God, as do Arabic-speaking Jews. In Aramaic, the language of Jesus, God is "Allaha," just a syllable away from Allah. Still, who can blame her? Earlier that month, NPR reported Palestinian demonstrators in Gaza City intoning, "there is no God but Allah." Last week, The Los Angeles Times mentioned mourners for a slain Baghdad professor reciting, "there is no God but Allah" at the university campus. In September, The New York Times reported an assassinated Palestinian uttering, "there is no God but Allah" before he died. "There is no god but God" is the first of Islam's five pillars. It is Muhammad's refutation of polytheism. Yet to today's non-Muslims, the locution "there is no God but Allah" reads as an affront, a declaration that inflammatory Allah trumps the Biblical God. This journalistic rendition distorts the meaning of the Muslim confession of faith. Of course, there are distinctions to be made between religions, which the press shouldn't shy away from. But there is no need to augment these differences artificially, especially at the cost of an accurate understanding of the origins of the Abrahamic faiths. John Kearney is a student at the Columbia University Graduate School of
  16. Boa Morte in racism claim Boa Morte claims he was racially abused Fulham manager Chris Coleman says he has spoken to Everton counterpart David Moyes about the alleged racist abuse of Luis Boa Morte by one of his players. The incident occured on Sunday during the 1-1 draw in the FA Cup fourth round tie at Goodison Park. The player involved is believed to be Everton striker Duncan Ferguson. But Ferguson's spokesman told a newspaper: "Anybody who knows Duncan knows that that he would never say a thing like that." Fulham boss Coleman said: "He's not going to make something like that up. It's such a serious allegation. "He's very emotional and passionate about his football and he's not the type of guy to bring something like this up to cover his own back. "If Louis has said that's happened I'm in his corner 100%."
  17. Somalia Leaders Sign Historic Deal- The East African Standard (Nairobi) January 30, 2004 Posted to the web January 30, 2004 Eliud Miring'uh Nairobi President Kibaki yesterday presided over a ceremony on Somali peace agreement at State House, Nairobi. The Somali delegation included interim President, Abdiqassim Salad Hassan, and representatives of various factions. The agreement signed stipulates, among other issues, the mode of electing members of the 275 strong Transitional Federal Somali Parliament, and modalities of adopting a new constitution. The agreement was a culmination of talks between various factions which started at Nairobi's Safari Park Hotel on January 9, and took 18 days. The talks were brokered by Musyoka, assisted by the Kenyan team. Delegates were drawn from the Transitional Government, the National Salvation Council, the Somali Reconciliation and Restoration Council, and members of the Civil Society. The agreement was signed by all the 39 member delegation, but six representatives of key factions were allowed to make speeches before President Kibaki. The ceremony, at the State Garden, was conducted by Foreign Affairs Minister, Kalonzo Musyoka. It was attended by National Security Minister, Chris Murungaru, Foreign Affairs assistant minister Moses Wetang'ula, and Head of Public Service Ambassador Francis Muthaura. Others included Kenya's Special Envoy to the Somali peace talks, Ambassador Bethwel Kiplagat, and Kenyan Ambassador to Somalia Mr. Mohammed Affey. Those who spoke were Mohammed Qanyare Afrah, Adan Mohamed Nur 'Madhobe', Col. Abdullahi Yusuf, Mohammed Dreere, and Musa Sudi Yalahow. The leaders called for unity, saying they were eager to have the document adopted by the plenary of the Somali National Reconciliation Conference meeting at Mbagathi next week. They urged the international community not to relent in their assistance as the delegates met in Nairobi to attend phase (three) of the talks before the appointment of a new Transitional Federal Parliament. President Kibaki said the Somali civil war had brought misery and suffering for the past 14 years. He said it was inconceivable that the conflict had dragged on for too long yet Somalis shared the same skin colour and even language, which should have made negotiations easier. Said the President: "When I look at you, I see the same people, and the same skin colour. So why would you be fighting for 14 years yet you share the same values, and the even the language?" He said it was Kenya's hope that at last peace would be restored in the war-ravaged nation, since the two countries shared a common border. He said the last 14 years in Somalia without a sovereign authority has been a wasted period and urged the delegates to seize the opportunity and reverse the current situation. "You have wasted 14 years of valuable time. This is no time to reflect on that loss, but a golden opportunity for you to think what can be achieved from now onwards," the President said. He urged the delegates to pray and speak with one voice, saying the world's attention was now focused on Somalia. Kibaki, who is the chairman of IGAD facilitating committee, also conveyed best wishes to the delegates from Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni the current chairman of IGAD Heads of States Summit.

  21. A classic in the making, dont miss out sports fans ------------------------------------------------------------- Federer races past Ferrero Maybe I have a poker face, but I get really nervous Roger Federer Gamewatch: As it happened Roger Federer booked his place in the final of the Australian Open with a flawless three-set victory over Juan Carlos Ferrero. The comfortable 6-4 6-1 6-4 victory also saw the Swiss player take over the world number one spot from American Andy Roddick. The Wimbledon champion never looked back after seizing his first break in the 10th game of the opening set. He will now take on Russian Marat Safin in Sunday's final in Melbourne. "I love it," said Federer, after climbing to the top of the rankings for the first time in his career. "I missed it in Montreal against Roddick and to take it this time, well I was really nervous. "Now I'm looking forward to playing Safin. He is one of my favourites to play against, not just because of our results, but he is a great guy. "I am confident. Have you ever seen a number one in the world who is not that confident?" Federer certainly stamped his authority on his semi-final encounter with Ferrero, who was the most consistent Grand Slam player of last year after reaching two finals. I started to feel the pain in my legs - it was a disaster Juan Carlos Ferrero But the way the match opened up in Melbourne the crowd could have been forgiven for thinking they were in for another five-set battle. The Spanish third seed carved out four break points in the seventh game with his powerful forehands, forcing Federer to dig deep to save the game. Ferrero's own resilience on his service game came to an abrupt end in the 10th game. A combination of ruthless strokeplay by Federer and unforced errors by Ferrero handed the Swiss the break and the first set 6-4. From there the match was effectively over as a contest as the Wimbledon champion raced to a 3-0 lead in the second set. Federer easily broke Ferrero again to wrap up the second set, leaving the Spaniard floundering with his pinpoint forehands and determination to chase down every ball. Ferrero, who seemed to be struggling with a groin injury, tried to change the rhythm of the match by coming forward to the net. But the French Open champion could find no answer to Federer's passing shots and lashing volleys and the Swiss secured the crucial break in the seventh game. Federer wrapped up the match when Ferrero hit his return long and the new world number one now goes in search of a second Grand Slam crown to add to his Wimbledon title.
