Several things you probably don't know
Reality Check replied to Libaax-Sankataabte's topic in General

I play a Guiter, a music instrument, is that Haram, or forbiden in Islam
Reality Check replied to Zaylici's topic in General
1. Yes 2. No. Personally, I've read two scholars say the exact opposite thing about the prohibition of music. I think that it is prohobited to a certain extent. Its not about playing the instrument itself but how you use it. To be honest, after I read the two opposing opinions, I didn't look into it much. -
Usually, I don't read books because of an authors background but by interest. So far, I haven't stumbled upon any african writers in my specific genre.

[/QB] are you kidding me? Why can't someone publish your novel from a non-muslim company and sell to non-muslims? If we can't sell anything to non-muslims..none of us would be here

So far, I have heard of couple of cases of Breast cancer. Surprisingly, most somali relatives I have died of heart-related diseases and not cancer.

ISLAM the solution to the Somali Crises?
Reality Check replied to LixAfar iyo Nus's topic in General
Originally posted by LixAfar: Maybe you think you are Canadian, American or belong to the nationality of the country you have been living in for the past 10-20 years. It is unfortunate what happened to Somalia. But I wasn't involved in the politics of it all that lead to the destruction of the country, nor do I really concern myself with how it is going to be rebuilt. I don't concern myself with tribalism and politics, which is what this is really all about. You can rebuild the nation, but you need to resolve and deal with the problems between the clans before you can even UNITE. How can Somalia move forward, if the people don't all have ONE goal? personally, I do not think it will happen in my life time. As for Islam being the only solution, I do not think so. Just look at the other so-called muslim countries...Are they really that stable? (Besides the ones that are rich off oil-money). You can have Islamic shari'ah placed in Somalia, but there will always be CORRUPT leaders. -
Welcome back Og_girl!

Diana whitening cream - self - obsession or genuine care for onself?
Reality Check replied to ijabo's topic in General
I think its not just about the cream but essentially what Somalis consider beauty. I guess these women are driven to be "light" and beautiful. I remember every summer when I got a tan, Somalis that I know would be like.."oh you got dark". Now, I love my skin when its tanned, but was that really necessary? I never did understand why they held light skin to such high standards. Besides, Diana is horrible. If you use it too much, the sun can damage your skin and you would be awfully discoloured and could cause skin cancer. -

....being me

^ I don't think its a propoganda against Islam but more of Ignorance. Any woman with the right mind knows to cover her genitals before anything else. I suggest you direct this to your instructor/professor and let him/her explain exactly why you are studying from a clearly biased and one-sided textbook!

Has anyone read the new book "the Da vinci code" ? I heard it was a good read too. I just don't have the time to read that book yet..but will try to get around to it when I finish reading the one I'm on right now.

Change is a relative thing. Besides, Megalomaniac, if you haven't been following the trend lately, every site I post in has people in an uproar. So is it really me who has changed, or those who reside here? and post after post of personal attacks that are unfounded, and having to ask people to be respectful ....one tends to become bitter with redundancy. So if you are going to sit there and discredit my asking for respect as just another PMS, then hell yeah..It will irritate the bejesus outta me. I'm just being honest! peace

Don't we have moderators to take out such posts, I wonder?

Jidaawy, How are they removing the hijabs from women when every single women in that picture is wearing a hijab?

I don't know what some of you are saying here. Modesty and shyness are two completely different things. You don't have to be shy to be modest. In any case, Ijabo, thing is, my speech instructor was lecturing on this the other day and according to our book, alot of people have this fear of public speaking. We are talking about important people like presidents (like hitler, JFK, etc) and top executives at big corps. Its a common thing that can sometimes lapse into fear of all types of communication situation (not just public speaking). Don't be self-concious, practice talking to people you do not know, join organizations at schools. All these things help you with your interpersonal skills. Next time your honey comes around, DO NOT RUN AWAY. if you are not comfortable making the first move, wait for him to say something...and make sure to BREATH DEEPLY! Anyways, alot of people are on the same boat as you (although they might not look it, but most of the time you can't tell). Remember to use your nervous energy to good use. Hope this helps

Horta maxaa loogu hadliwaayey af Somali waa rune..waxaa laga yaabaa in dadki qaarkii uu dhib ku yahay malaha. It is pity some of our nomad friends get irritated easily when challenged or engaged. It seems as if labels come handy whenever things got little bit heated. Since I’ve asked the question: what does “westernized” do really mean? I should start giving my opinion on this. To me it means assimilation and by that I mean to convert to the ways or to the customs of Western countries. Or get absorbed by its prevailing culture. What’s wrong with “getting assimilated” one may ask. Well it depends, nothing really if you don’t have religious precepts of your own that is markedly different than the Western customs. If you happen to be someone who acts in conformity with his principle – let say practicing Muslim – then “westernization” (the process of getting assimilated) has a lot of things that just doesn’t reconcile with said principles. Gender is irrelevant here. Some distinguished members in this forum have made the link between the desirable values/virtues/attributes and westernization. For instance, assertiveness, personal independence, being self-reliant, and being educated and “westernization”, in their opinion, go hand in hand. In other words the two are mutually inclusive. Can one have all these attributes without getting “westernized”? To some, posing this question alone amounts insult. To others, only haters who are warriors in the gender “war” ask these types of questions! I guess there is some kind of “baggage” attached to the ‘westernized’ word otherwise it would not have evoked this passion in some nomads.. Those of us who get their schooling through western institutions are aware the secular assertion that ‘social conformity’ and ‘individual liberty’ are in permanent conflict. I must say I concur that assertion if religion and “social conformity” are defined as two different realms – that is. If you are conservative ‘reer baadiye’ Somali like me, the “westernization” is not only unnecessary but also degrading. Again, that was not necessary and stop being so accusatory! were you not taught the art of arguing a point without character assasinating? But I guess that's the SOL way   You talk about social conformity and the west. What about somalia? what about SOL for that matter. Anyone who doesn't conform to the general mindset has some sort of "baggage" am I right? I see nothing wrong with being western (in other words, non-somali) and muslim at the same time. In fact, to suggest that all of western culture= gaalo would be an insult to the greater western muslim community. Just because one is western doesn't mean they conform to everything that culture mandates. I think Somalis have this phobia of the western atmosphere..but why live there if you can't be a part of the community? I just want to know what is this fear of the word "western"?
