By William Wallis in Addis Ababa Published: February 1 2007 02:00 | Last updated: February 1 2007 02:00 The US believes militant Islamists from the ousted coalition that held sway over parts of southern Somalia may be regrouping in Saudi Arabia, Eritrea and also Yemen, Jendayi Frazer, US assistant secretary of state for Africa, said yesterday. Speaking to the Financial Times in Addis Ababa, Ms Frazer said it was too early to tell who among the Islamist leadership had survived Ethiopia's invasion last month and subsequent US air strikes on alleged affiliates of al-Qaeda. "It is going to take some time for the fog of war to clear up and we have an ability to see who is still operating and how they are operating," she said. But she was "very concerned" that extremist elements from among the defeated Islamists were "trying to reconstitute themselves either out of Saudi Arabia or Eritrea", and that international jihadist networks would see this as an opportunity. "We have to engage with the Saudi government and their services to try to prevent that from happening as well as engage regionally." Ms Frazer described Eritrea, with whom the US has deteriorating relations, asa "source of regional instability". This had been "very clearly exposed" during recent events in Somalia. Ethiopia, the US's principle ally in the Horn of Africa, alleges that Eritrea supported hardline elements within the ousted Islamists by supplying arms, fighters and military advice. "Eventually Eritrea will see the limits of its actions to destabilise the Horn," said Ms Frazer. Ms Frazer said the key to ensuring Somalia did not provide a haven for international terrorist networks now lay with the Transitional Federal Government, which emerged from peace talks in Kenya in 2004. "They have to do it by reaching out. They have to do it through inclusive dialogue," she said. Copyright The Financial Times Limited 2007

Originally posted by General Duke: ^^^Near a hundred then. One Somalia is not under any occupation, unless you are from the defeated group and thus any talk will suffice. The second point, to compare Iraq to Somalia is laughable it took Iraq weeks to be taken over while it took a week to chase out the rag tag clan courts. Iraq had a formidable army which fought two major wars and its remenants are the insurgency. The clan courts had IndaCade and he is in Saudi Arabia. Thus the Somali officer cor, are in the TFG while the Iarqi officer cor are with the insurgency. Somalia has a government being supported by its neighbours, Kenya, Ethiopa and Igad. Iraq had a government which was being destroyed, institution to institution. Even Afghanistan the Taliban ran the cuntry for a decade. The clan courts did not have a single institution apart from the name Shabaabe and so on. Everybody knows the insurgency is spearheaded by alqaeda not the baathist. so your analogy their is wrong.

it really is funny how this whole event is almost identical in iraq. at the beginning in iraq they were saying it was the "dead enders" the "remnants" and soon it was only the sunni neighborhoods. I predict the ethiopians will try to go to those neighborhoods and hell will ensue them.

Last Updated: 01-31-07 at 10:25AM WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Navy has scaled back its presence off Somalia's coast, withdrawing the USS Eisenhower aircraft carrier after a three-week mission there, officials said Wednesday. The carrier left Tuesday to return to the Persian Gulf region, where it had been supporting NATO-led forces in Afghanistan before going to the African coast, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record. Among other tasks, aircraft from the Eisenhower had been making flights daily to provide close air support for Ethiopian and Somali forces that were working with U.S. special operations forces as advisers, one official said. The planes had not been called on to use their weapons, and commanders felt the carrier was needed more in the Gulf region, the official said. So far, officials have acknowledged two airstrikes over Somalia a couple of weeks apart in January, but have given few details. They are reported to have been conducted by other U.S. forces based in Djibouti, though officials have not confirmed that. At least two U.S. ships remain off Somalia's coast _ the guided missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill and amphibious landing ship USS Ashland, officials said. Before the Eisenhower arrived, they had been patrolling the coast in search of al-Qaida members thought to be fleeing Somalia following Ethiopia's December invasion, aimed at unseating an Islamic movement that had taken control of the Somali capital. U.S. officials said last week that they would begin to withdraw Navy forces in tandem with the withdrawal of Ethiopian forces, which have started to leave Somalia.

Ex-warlord voted Somali speaker Madobe is a former warlord and close ally of President Yusuf Somalia's parliament has elected ex-warlord Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur as its new speaker - one of the three top positions in the interim government. Mr Nur, a close ally of President Abdullahi Yusuf, replaces Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan - sacked two weeks ago. He was removed for having unauthorised talks with the Islamists, who ruled much of Somalia until last month. Mr Adan had also opposed Ethiopia's military intervention to help the government drive out the Islamic group. Meanwhile, Ethiopia says it is still seeking an early withdrawal from the country despite slow progress in drumming up an African peacekeeping force. Analysts fear that unless the growing insecurity in the country is contained quickly, Somalia will slip back to the anarchic misrule which has prevailed in the country for the past 16 years. Applause Mr Nur - better known as Madobe - won the vote at the parliament in the city of Baidoa with 101 votes, ahead of his nearest rival's 53 votes. POSSIBLE PEACEKEEPERS Nine battalions proposed - 7,600 troops: Uganda: 1,500 troops offered, subject to parliamentary approval Malawi: Up to 1,000 troops offered Nigeria: 1,000 troops offered Ghana: Reportedly offered troops Benin: Considering Burundi: Considering Tanzania: Considering Rwanda: Considering South Africa: Not sending troops There was applause and cheers when the announcement of his victory was announced via load speakers inside the parliament hall decorated with ornaments and the pictures of the various candidates, AP news agency reports. Before his election, Mr Nur served as a justice minister in the current transitional government which was formed in neighbouring Kenya in 2004. He comes from the Rahwein clan - one of Somalia's four main clans - a requirement of the transitional power-sharing charter. Correspondents say his predecessor had close ties with the businessmen who financed the Union of Islamic Courts and his attempts to negotiate a political agreement with the group infuriated the transitional government. The dismissal of Mr Adan - who has a reputation for honesty, as well as for being independent-minded - was criticised by the United States. Jendayi Frazer, US assistant secretary of state for African affairs, said it went against the spirit of reconciliation needed in Somalia and it was likely to have a negative impact on dialogue. Martial law The BBC's Mohammed Olad Hassan in Mogadishu says Mr Nur's appointment comes as martial law is imposed on the country - putting all powers into the hands of the president for the next three months. The last speaker was removed for being too close to the Islamists The government has imposed new curfew restrictions in main towns to try to maintain stability. Overnight, an unidentified group fired mortars at a military base in Mogadishu. Ethiopia says it remains confident that the African Union (AU) will start to deploy peacekeeping troops in Somalia within three weeks despite the failure at the African summit to secure the full number of soldiers for the planned stabilisation force. Ethiopian Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin told a news conference after the summit in Addis Ababa that his government still intended to withdraw its troops from Somalia. The AU says it needs 8,000 troops to replace the Ethiopian army, but only 4,000 soldiers have been pledged so far by member countries.
