Rami Sipilä does not like Somalis By Esa Mäkinen “Let’s help our Somali friends get back home”, declares a headline on a page in Facebook. Next to it is a picture that used to grace wrappers of a certain type of Finnish liquorice - a caricature of a thick-lipped black man that remains controversial to this day. The declared purpose of the online community is to raise funds to send Somalis out of Finland. A bit lower on the page is a picture of a man aiming an assault rifle in the direction of the camera. The caption reads: “The alternative to leaving the country”. Usually this kind of bluster on the Internet is anonymous and without much significance. By last Wednesday 14,000 people had joined the group, using real names and their own faces. Most of them are under the age of 30. These would seem to be some of the racists that have been in the news so much lately. Sorry, perhaps we should call them immigration-critical, lest the racists take office. The reasoning in the groups is that the Somalis are a problem because they are Somalis. The Somalis live on Finnish taxpayers’ money, they say, depriving Finns of homes and jobs. Or as Lauri Vidberg writes on the group’s message board: “It’s easy to use our tax money to buy Armani shirts and Lacoste sneakers.” Minja Hänninen asks: “Why can refugees come here, when we have people of our own who are doing real bad?” Until now, the idea that people should be judged by what they do and not for being of a particular nationality has been at the heart of Finnish democracy. The Facebook group is the idea of Rami Sipilä from Urjala. “What is the purpose of this group?” “If the north of Somalia has been deemed safe to live, then what are they doing here using our tax money?” Sipilä asks. So don’t the Somalis have a right to be in Finland any more? “If they go to work and pay taxes, then OK, but they don’t do that very often.” A decision by the Supreme Administrative Court in December to allow the deportation of two Somalis to their country of origin is having its consequences. According to the court, the unrest in North Somalia is no longer an impediment to deportation. However, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs says that all parts of Somalia are dangerous, and urges all Finns to leave the country. Sipilä denies any knowledge of the picture with the rifle, even though it has been on the front page of the website for a week. After the interview, conducted on Thursday evening, Sipilä removes the picture. Others go up, with swastikas and Somalis. Many of them are also removed. On Thursday, the Helsinki Times, the commercial TV network MTV3, and the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE) report on the hate group. The publicity leads to about 2,000 new members. Minority Ombudsman Johanna Suurpää said that she is investigating as to whether or not those behind the site could be charged with incitement against an ethnic group. Let’s ask the opinion of a Somali. Helsinki resident Abdirahim Hussein, age 30, laughs when he hears about the hate group. He is an interpreter and a municipal politician of the Centre Party. “How do I feel? That’s a funny question. Is this a trick question, then?” Upon hearing that the leader of the group says that Finnish taxpayers’ money should not be spent on giving Somalis a livelihood, he responds: “Where in the world is that guy living? In Finland?” Hussein says that during the recession of the 1990s there was a prevailing image in Finland of Somalis as tax scroungers. Whenever there’s a recession, there’s a search for scapegoats, and the present slump is no exception. “I stand out, even if I stand among ten thousand Finns. I always stand out because of my colour”, he says. “I just got off work. I have an eight-hour workday behind me and six hours ahead. Then somebody goes and says that I use taxpayers’ money. That is a very deep personal insult.” Helsingin Sanomat / First published in print 15.2.2009 Previously in HS International Edition: One in four marriages in Helsinki involve at least one foreigner (9.2.2009) International Organization for Migration denies having taken stand on deportation of Somalis (28.1.2009) Few parties put emphasis on immigration policy (12.1.2009) Remorseful Somali man awaiting deportation fears return to former home country (9.1.2009) ESA MÄKINEN / Helsingin Sanomat esa.makinen@hs.fi

Q: Why are Somalians always on their phone? What are they talking about all day and to whom? A: Really? You got to be kidding me. You’re going to ask this? Just wondering, are you paying our phone bills? We’re talking about you behind your back. Oh, and it is Somalis, not Somalians. But seriously, we are a society that loves to socialize due to the hot climate. We’re outdoors day and night. At night we used to sleep under the stars and the moon because it was too hot to be inside the house. I knew everybody in my town. In America, everybody locks their doors. So, we’re trying to learn your ways by locking our doors and not sleeping outside and, to substitute our ways, we are using our phones (that we pay our own bills for) to call family and friends and neighbors. We love to socialize and keep in touch with everyone, but now that we’re spread around the world we can’t all talk in person. Until you pass a law to ban phones, you will see me talking on the phone to my nine siblings and 11 half-siblings living in three continents, seven countries, and as many time zones. Since you want to know who we’re on the phone with all day, here’s a typical day for me. Most days, I will talk to my sister in Somalia, to check in and see if everything is ok with them. In the morning, as I’m on my way in to work, I get a call from my mother in London, and she asks me to talk to my brother who won’t listen to her. I’m late to work, but I take five minutes to listen to her. Around 1 p.m., I would call my father because it is 9 p.m. for him, and I know he’s just finished his day and came home to sleep. At 10 p.m., I get a call from my little brother (also in London) who just got off from work and will say good night to me before he goes to bed. It is 3 a.m. for him, but he knows I get off from my second job at 10 p.m. At 10 a.m. Saturday morning, I call my six nieces and nephews I’ve never met in Sweden and chat with them before my shift. And this is on top of all the normal phone use that any other Minnesotan has. If this is inconveniencing you, sorry, but I can’t help you. But thanks for the question. - Ifrah Jimale

@Mokulaalow......there is statue of sheikh bashir in Burao as well as many schools named after him in hargeisa, burao etc.Farah omaar, too.Besides tell me where the British even killed 100 people.Neva happened,as you know the protectorate was by name only & there was no even 20 British nationals at any one time. The closest there was some soldiers was during fight with sayid M A H & even that the siyad exterminated entire clans( esp.people from Lascanod who r carrying his name here in SOL).I know that not only from history but I'm related to a lot thm I know personally... My grandma's entire sub clan was wiped by the Sayid.Go surf & check everywhere & show me where the British killed 10 people let alone destroy villages or towns. -

^^^ again dodging the whole thing as Garnaqsi already point out.No one is blaming Islam but Hur el ein is in the quran/hadith.As far as what islam's ruling about whitening stuff?guess it already ruled ..hur el ein....that's what you suppose to get in heaven so why care in life:D But seriously you guys don't have to go that far to deny what we all know. There r many issues you back away from & have no answer when confronted with. Here r some: Islam states that hands of thieves amputated & adultrous stoned, but none of the muslim countries carry out with exception of saudi Arabia, same way killers r sent to jail instead of gallows ...why is that, how you explain. They r not muslim then. Why don't they follow quran?!! you all run in circles & come up with all kind excuses as this topic at hand.

I'm fighting for freedom & keeping my people in bondage doesn't go together.I don't care what anyone says, fact is there is progress & development where there's no onlf, and if there was no onlf the whole region would have been much much better than what's now. This movement is very clannish based & has no hope whatso eva.Other somalis shunned & it's about time they realise the box they in. know i get lot negative responses for this but believe I actually care & see the plight of these people led by narrow minded few.
