Ibrahim Abdullahi said government soldiers were rounding up men of fighting age in Hargeisa to prevent them from joining the SNM rebel group [Matthew Vickery/Al Jazeera] It was June 2, 1988 and Hargeisa was under attack. The rat-a-tat-tat of nearby artillery rose above the city and filled Ibrahim Abdullahi’s ears, but the battle was in the north and hadn’t reached his government-controlled southern district – at least not yet. As he nervously ventured outside, Abdullahi’s mind raced. He had already sent his wife and eight children to safety in Ethiopia, but he felt a longing to stay in Hargeisa, a need to protect his modest mud-brick home and keep it occupied in order to deter looters and to defend the product of years of his own hard work. Everything had happened so quickly. Just days before, Somali National Movement (SNM) rebels had captured nearby Burao city from Somalia’s national army, and Hargeisa was now in their sights. But it seemed that government soldiers were determined to stop that at any cost. Within the last two days Abdullahi had heard that killings had begun. “I’ll take it day by day,” Abdullahi thought to himself. “If the situation gets worse and there’s an opportunity to run – then I’ll go.” Government soldiers were rounding up men of fighting age in Hargeisa to prevent them from joining the SNM. Crouched down outside his home, Abdullahi’s mind wandered to the thought of fleeing again. Rumours were circulating that women and children were also being targeted, but he had no way to know for sure. Some people had even said government bombers were pursuing fleeing families as they tried to escape. He thought of his wife and kids and prayed the rumours were untrue. Then, out of nowhere, he heard his name. “Ibrahim Abdullahi?!” The noise of gunfire hung in the air, but it remained at least a couple of kilometres away. But here, as he looked up, tens of metres from him, was a small group of government soldiers. Abdullahi’s mind raced again. Civilian or not, he was of fighting age. “Yes, that’s me,” he murmured, trying not to let the fear in his head spill into his words. “Come!” the commander barked, several soldiers standing menacingly beside him, guns cocked and ready. “We need you.” Walking towards what he assumed was certain death, Abdullahi took one deep breath, and ventured forward. Using an intricately carved wooden cane to help his ageing legs, 75-year-old Abdullahi stands tall and proud, albeit a little unsteady before lowering himself into a black leather swivel chair in the unassuming office building in Hargeisa. It’s 2017 and the walls of the office are dotted with photos of men in masks working meticulously, digging at dusty ground and carefully brushing away dirt from skeletons that haven’t seen the light of day in decades. “I remember burying bodies in that grave,” Abdullahi says gesturing towards one of the photos on the wall in front of him, “and that one”, he adds, his eyes slowly tracing the room. “Some days I must have buried hundreds, some days just dozens,” he continues. “People were being killed everywhere in the town. They didn’t see a difference between men, women, or children – everybody was to be killed.” Abdullahi’s story precedes the man in Hargeisa, the capital of the self-declared republic of Somaliland that announced its separation from Somalia after the government of Siad Barre collapsed in 1991. His weathered face – one that seems to have as many wrinkles as years he’s had in his life – may not be well-known in the city, but in every corner of the capital his story is legendary, some regarding it as truth, others as myth. But in the office of the War Crimes Commissioner, Abdullahi’s story has been confirmed again and again -over the years, he’s been the key to reuniting distraught families with the remains of their loved ones. “Those were black days, black black days,” Abdullahi repeats as he recalls memories that have stayed fresh in his mind three decades later. Resting his cane on the table in front of him, Abdullahi begins to tell his story, his eyes darting from side to side as his mind rewinds back through the years to 1988 and the 28 days of his life that have defined him ever since. ‘I’m only alive to do this job’ The city was a ghost town. Buildings lay abandoned, dead bodies were scattered in the streets, and the smell of death lingered in the air. As Abdullahi walked, everything started to become familiar. He wasn’t walking to a military barracks like he first thought; he was on his way to the Ministry of Public Services where he was employed handling heavy machinery like tractors and diggers. “Go and get one of the machines that can dig,” the commander said abruptly when they arrived outside the complex. “Be quick, we have to go – there are bodies waiting.” Abdullahi did as he was told. Within an hour he was at Malko Durduro, a valley area in western Hargeisa, digging into the soft soil. Several government soldiers stood around his digger with 10 bodies tied together lying beside them, blood still seeping through clothes and staining the sandy earth below them. As he listened to the soldiers speaking amongst themselves it became apparent to Abdullahi that the army didn’t want the bodies buried in an effort to cover their crimes – they were fed up of the smell. His job, as their new prisoner, was to get rid of it. The corpses were unrecognisable. Pieces of flesh ripped off their bodies from head to toe, shot to pieces by an anti-aircraft gun that sat nearby. “If I didn’t know how to operate this equipment they would kill me, I would be lying there as well,” Abdullahi realised as he dug. “There’s no one else in the town, I’m only alive because they need me to do this job.” To survive, he would have to dig. Guarded day and night, Abdullahi dug to save his life. Barely allowed time to rest, he buried hundreds of bodies a day in that first week. At first, the dead were men, mostly in fatigues – rebels. After a few days, the fatigues disappeared, and women started appearing, then children. All killed in the same way – tied together in groups of 10, shot, their faces sometimes slashed with knifes and mutilated. The soldiers may maim and deface them, they may chuck the bodies on the ground like pieces of rotten meat as though they were never humans with emotions, dreams, wants and desires – but he knew otherwise. They were fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, and even in death they deserved respect. In those first few days, Abdullahi swore to himself that he would at least give them that. The most important thing to him was to get everyone buried before nightfall, before wild animals would come out of the bush and claw away at the bodies. If he could just do that, he thought, it would be some way at least to give the dead some dignity after such a violent and unjust end. It was how he could show respect, his own silent rebellion against his captors. For days on end he worked from dawn till dusk, burying the war crimes of a regime that wanted him and his people dead. He did what he could to blank his mind. He thought of his family, and daydreamed about where they could be, safe and away from the living hell that their hometown had become. He trained himself to concentrate on digging, to distance himself from what was happening. That’s the only way he would survive. Then, after two weeks, one of the bodies spoke. Ibrahim Abdullahi returns to Malko Durduro and the mass graves he dug three decades ago. [Matthew Vickery/Al Jazeera] ‘I still can’t sleep at night’ The ground slips a little below Abdullahi’s feet after a night of heavy rain turned the bone-dry dirt in Malko Durduro into mud. “It’s important we teach what happened in the past so it never happens again,” Abdullahi says using his cane to steady himself as Al Jazeera takes the 75-year-old back to the mass graves he dug three decades ago at the notorious execution site of Malko Durduro. “My biggest fear is that what happened here will be forgotten.” Plagued by a deadly and devastating drought all year, the night’s rain was the proverbial drop in the ocean, bringing more joy to the residents of the Somali city than water. But it was still something to a region that has been battling extreme weather conditions throughout 2017. “Every year when there’s heavy rain more skeletons appear,” Abdullahi says, scanning every inch of the area as he meanders from side to side. “It brings all the memories flooding back.” To Abdullahi’s left, imposing cliffs of dirt stretch several metres up, small trees and cacti clinging onto the edge – just another rainy night away from succumbing to erosion and joining Abdullahi on the valley floor. Returning to Malko Durduro three decades after he was forced to bury thousands of bodies here, it doesn’t take long before Abdullahi’s mind takes him back to those dark days. “I still can’t sleep at night remembering him,” Abdullahi says, recalling the one body – the only body – which looked up to him from amongst the dead and spoke. It was two weeks into his captivity when Abdullahi came across a miracle. A man who had somehow survived the firing squad and then played dead as soldiers piled the executed into a grave. The miracle was short lived. Facing being buried alive, there was only one thing the survivor could do. He spoke. “He was supposed to be dead,” Abdullahi says pausing. “He talked to me, pleaded with me, ‘please untie me’, but the soldiers heard him speaking. They untied him from the corpses, forced him to stand up and they shot everywhere at him, all around him, even at the trees.” “I had to do this job to survive,” he adds, looking for understanding. Digging his cane into the soft ground, Abdullahi walks the valley floor for several minutes, his eyes wandering the surroundings as his memories take him back to that time. He can’t prevent them, even if he wanted to. Stopping in his tracks and using the cane as an extension of himself, Abdullahi motions towards the cliff side. Within seconds, and without words, it’s clear what he’s trying to draw attention to. Exposed by the rain and protruding from the wet cliffside is the unmistakable bone-white colour of a skull, almost waiting for the right moment to drop to the ground and join its burier on the floor below. To the right of the skull the tips of ribs stick out at differing angles sandwiched between greenish brown fabrics – fatigues. “He was a rebel,” Abdullahi says, filling the silence. “I remember burying there.” A skeleton of a rebel lies in a shallow grave at Malko Durduro, now exposed after a night of heavy rain [Matthew Vickery/Al Jazeera] Panning the area, just tens of metres away from the newly exposed skeleton more bones stick out – this time there are no fatigues. The bones of a civilian killed by the army, and then buried by Abdullahi. “I remember being taken to this valley and a military vehicle pulled up with an official inside it,” he recalls. “They pushed 12 bodies out of it, bodies of school children – they were still in their shirts and dresses. They had no noticeable gunshot wounds. A soldier told me all of their blood had been drained from them so it could be used for the national army. That soldier cried as he told me, he cried for almost five minutes.” “Those were the worst days of my life.” As he speaks, the faint sound of playing children carries through the air from a school less than 100 meters away. Throughout the land surrounding the school, more bodies are scattered, waiting to be exposed, identified by forensics, and eventually returned to their waiting families decades later. For Abdullahi, the memories of the people he buried will never leave him. But he counts himself lucky he survived. As the bodies reduced from hundreds a day at the beginning of Abdullahi’s captivity, to just a few per day after three weeks, he knew his time was running out. Soon he would be surplus to requirements, and if he didn’t find a way to escape, he would be killed too. But on the 28th day – for the very first time – he found himself alone. Abdullahi didn’t need a second opportunity. “The guards were getting more relaxed with me as I hadn’t tried to escape, but on the 28th day I was out in the valley and realised there was no one watching me – I ran,” he says, describing his bid for freedom. Hiding until nightfall, Abdullahi smuggled himself out of Hargeisa. Within days, he had gathered information about the whereabouts of his wife and kids – they had survived the bombers and were still alive. After two days and three nights of walking, he made it to their refugee camp in Ethiopia. Walking into the camp on the morning of the third day, Abdullahi saw his family in the distance and for the briefest of moments, the memories of the dead left him. “At that moment, when I saw them again – I felt reborn.” The 75-year-old says he’s lived a good life as a husband and a father to twelve children – he had four more after returning to Hargeisa after the war. He’s come to terms with what he witnessed and became a part all those years ago, and has found some comfort in helping the Somaliland authorities to recover the dead – 2,000 of whom remain buried. “My children, to this day, call me ‘the walking dead’ when they see me,” he says, laughing a little to himself. “They couldn’t believe I survived. They still can’t.” SOURCE: AL JAZEERA NEWS

The United Nations and African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) held a joint meeting here on Saturday to discuss a comprehensive approach to improving security in Somalia. The meeting drew participants from key federal ministries, member states and international partners, as the government has launched a major offensive against Al-Shabaab militants in southern region. Special Representative of the U.N. Secretary-General for Somalia, Michael Keating, said terrorist groups remained the main threat to peace and stability in Somalia. “The core issue before us is how we can continue to stabilize Somalia and preserve the many gains that have been made,” Keating was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the U.N. Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM). He stressed the need to protect the political space so that the Somalis can continue constructing the state, building peace and resolving various challenges on social economy, politics, constitutional review, job creation and service delivery. “There is a need to develop a strategy led by the government in conjunction with the AU, securing populations’ centers, main supply routes, joint operations and a plan for strengthening Somali security forces’ capability,” he added. Francisco Madeira, special representative of the African Union Chairperson for Somalia, emphasized concerted efforts to address the security challenges, appealing for enhanced information sharing and intelligence capabilities on the terrorists. “Once we know the enemy, once we know our capabilities, we know what needs to be done. And once we know what needs to be done, we need resources. We need to sit down together and see how we mobilize these resources,” Madeira said. Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire noted that a comprehensive approach in dealing with Somalia’s security situation is critical, as the government readies itself to completely neutralize the militants in order to restore peace and order in the country. “Maintaining security is not just about offensive action. We remain cognizant that we require a comprehensive approach that has been well articulated by our president, who is keen on engaging our population in good governance, fighting corruption, reconciliation and healing the wounds of the past,” Khaire said. Somali security Forces have killed more than 80 members of Al Shabaab militants and destroyed cache of weapons in an offensive in Jilib town which is about 98km (61 miles) north of Somalia’s port town Kismayu. The militants were targeted in a special operation by the forces, Somali information ministry said on Saturday. Number of vehicles fitted with machine guns was also destroyed in Somalia’s middle Jubba region. “Somali security forces have conducted an operation in Jilib district and destroyed an Alshabaab camp where terrorists were regrouping to launch attacks on Gedo region area. 81 militants killed number of vehicles and heavy weapons were destroyed,” Somali information minister, Abdirahman Yariisow has said in a twitter post. The spokesman of Alshabaab, Abdulaziz Abu Musab has denied the reported attack, saying there was no attacks been taken on Al-shabaab camps in Jilib town. “The statement which claims that there was an attack on Jilib town is baseless, we have not heard even any attacks in whole the region,” said Musab in an statement posted on pro-Alshabaab website. The operation came barely two days after several Alshabaab militants killed in U.S. airstrike in Bay region, about 100 miles west of Somali capital Mogadiishu. In October, a truck bomb at a busy intersection in Mogadishu killed over 358 people; the Shabab were blamed for the deadly attack.

Hargeisa, Somaliland – After a seven-year wait, Somaliland will go to the polls to elect a new leader. Here are five things you need to know: Why is this election important? Somalilanders will finally be choosing their new president on November 13 after inadequate funding, political disagreements and drought caused the polls to be delayed for several years. The presidential election – the third since Somalia’s northern region decided to separate from from the rest of the country in 1991 – was originally scheduled at the same time as that for the lower house of parliament, but the two have now, controversially, been separated, with the latter planned for April 2019. While past efforts to register its electorate were riddled with inconsistencies, this latest attempt – a first in Africa with its use of iris scan biometric technology – has gone smoothly, and all parties have expressed confidence in the process. The change in leadership after a divisive administration increases the stakes, especially given the delay for those waiting for their chance to take power MOHAMED FARAH, DIRECTOR OF THE ACADEMY FOR PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT IN SOMALILAND President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud “Silanyo”, whose government has been accused of corruption and nepotism, is stepping down – so the stakes in this election are high. “The change in leadership after a divisive administration increases the stakes, especially given the delay for those waiting for their chance to take power” Mohamed Farah, director of the Academy for Peace and Development in Somaliland, told Al Jazeera. What will a new administration have to deal with? There is the issue of two recent deals with the UAE, which would see it take over and develop the Berbera port, as well as building a military base in Somaliland. Both developments have significant financial and geopolitical implications for Somaliland, and have the potential to shape its future. “Somaliland will have to play a critical role in the economic development and political stability of the region, … and there is a feeling that such large developments [could] be an issue for a new administration,” Farah explains. FAST FACTS Somaliland, a region of around 3.5 million people, votes on November 13 Vote marks first presidential election since 2010 Process to be witnessed by international observers Three candidates vying to be head of state ALjazeera

Somaliland’s election is approaching us very soon. For the last few months, every candidate and his supporters have done a great and restless work, campaigning all throughout Somaliland cities. As we know, next week marks the presidential Election Day in Somaliland. Our constitution tells us every one of Somaliland’s Citizen has the right to vote. I believe this is very important for all Somaliland citizens, the freedom and right to vote is among us and we must seize this opportunity. Three political parties and three candidates are key stakeholders in the Somaliland election. Candidates standing for office are affiliated with political parties which both define a candidate’s ideology and policy position. Reflecting on a list of issues. with which the electorate can identify, based upon a political party platform and their priorities for issues, the candidate’s election is about making promises to the public and resolving these issues that they want to tackle. My recommendation for Somaliland citizens, is for you to watch and listen to all candidates and understand each special plan they have for our people. You have to study, analyze and then vote for whoever is best. Somaliland’s problems can be fixed with a good leader, some main issues include high inflation rate, high unemployment rate, international communities do not recognize our country, many younger people leave our country in order to get a job and good life in foreign countries, and many of them died during their journey, and more. Therefore, I recommend to all Somaliland voters, think about who will solve our problems. As everyone of you know, peace is key for the development of this country. All the activities of the country run smoothly in the situation of peace during Somaliland election. Peace is the sign of development and prosperity. Peace is the mother of civilization and war is the demon of destruction. Civilization and development cannot progress if there is no peace in the country. Somaliland’s people want peace and I hope on Election Day, people will vote and a just leader will emerge. As we know, Somaliland is a rich country in many sectors and I believe if you choose the right person he will solve Somaliland economic problems during his term. Hopefully, Somaliland will get international communities recognized, if he choose the right team with knowledge. This is not an easy job, but he can change many things in the country. Somaliland people are great people, we are naturally very traditional and take pride in our country. Our key is to always respect and listen to our elders’ advice, because Somaliland does not have a major democracy system like Western style. Therefore, a peaceful election in Somaliland has implications to the advancements of democracy in an African country. Transparent elections will strengthen the country’s leadership role in the continent, both as an example of successfully resolving conflicts and as a stalwart against undemocratic transitions as Somaliland governments and Somaliland elders did many times. Finally, Somaliland deserves increased support from the international community. The international community should increase support for the new Somaliland government in its efforts to eradicate Somaliland problems. With improved government and security, Somaliland should be an ideal recipient of increased foreign direct investment flows: thus, the election may open opportunities for many countries firms to increase investment in Somaliland and Somaliland get recognized from international community. Election fever grips Somaliland ahead of a tense leadership challenge. Young supporters of Waddani (Somaliland National Party) – many under 16 and therefore not yet old enough to vote – gather in Freedom Park in Somaliland’s capital city, Hargeisa. An estimated 70 percent of the population are under 30. KATE STANWORTH/SAFERWORLD/AL JAZEERA Hargeisa, Somaliland – High spirits and a celebratory atmosphere have characterised the political campaign rallies in the run-up to a long-awaited presidential election in the self-declared state of Somaliland, which is due to take place on November 13. This is Somaliland’s first presidential election since 2010 and the stakes are high. Three candidates – Faysal Ali Warabe of UCID party, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi of Waddani party and Muse Bihi Abdi, of the ruling Kulmiye party – are vying to replace Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud “Silanyo”, the current head of state. The contest was delayed for more than two years due to voter registration issues, lack of funding and a devastating drought. The process will be witnessed by international election observers funded by the UK government, as well as a team of over 600 domestic observers who will be reporting on polling day using SMS. It is hoped that a high-tech voter registration system, using iris-recognition software, will guard against electoral fraud. In the past, there have been allegations that competing clans encouraged their members to register multiple times to increase their political influence. Since Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following a bloody civil war, the region has held five largely peaceful, elections and one constitutional referendum, forging a political system that combines traditional leadership with modern representative democracy. The fact that it is not officially recognised by any other country means that Somaliland’s political situation is complex, and the Somali Federal Government in Mogadishu still lays claim to its territory. A boy on his way to join an UCID (Justice and Welfare Party) rally in Hargeisa. Young people in Somaliland have shown a strong interest in politics. ‘The youth have energy, and for them politics is new,’ says Abdirashid Aliahi Farah, a 26-year-old domestic election observer. ‘Some are seeing their first election. In order to get their votes, all the parties say they have youth programmes and that they care about the young.’ KATE STANWORTH/SAFERWORLD/AL JAZEERA Supporters of Kulmiye (Peace, Unity and Development Party), the current ruling party, drive through the streets of Hargeisa displaying party colours and blaring party-promoting music, on their way to a rally. Each day only one designated party can campaign, a rule created to avoid potential conflict and security issues. KATE STANWORTH/SAFERWORLD/AL JAZEERA UCID presidential candidate, Faysal Ali Warabe, takes a photo with a child before addressing supporters at a rally in Hargeisa. The Somaliland constitution, approved via popular referendum in 2001, allows for only three parties to exist, a ruling designed to separate party politics from clan affiliations. KATE STANWORTH/SAFERWORLD/AL JAZEERA When asked why she supports UCID, Fardus, 48, replies: ‘This is the party without tribalism. It stands for religion and justice.’ Women turned out in large numbers to the city’s campaign rallies. KATE STANWORTH/SAFERWORLD/AL JAZEERA A Kulmiye party supporter at a rally in Hargeisa. Iris detection Biometric tools deployed by NEC in Somaliland voter registration deters multiple voter registration A haven of peace in the Horn of Africa, the self-declared republic of Somaliland is set to hold presidential elections on Monday. Here are five things you need to know about the poll: 1) Eye-dentifying fraud Somaliland will be the first in the world to use an iris-based biometric voting system, according to its election spokesman Saed Ali Muse. It will help combat fraud, and ensure that Somaliland will host one of the most transparent elections ever in Africa. Somaliland has about 704,000 registered voters out of a population of about 3.5 million. Dr Michael Walls 2) Finnish connection Of the three candidates, two – Abdirahman Mohamed Irro and Faisal Ali Warabe – have Finnish nationality. They settled there after the civil war of the 1990s, which led to Somaliland declaring independence from Somalia. The third candidate is Muse Bihi Abdi, a former military officer who trained in Russia in the late 1970s. The three are vying to succeed Ahmed Silanyo, who is stepping down after one, albeit extended, term. He was due to leave power in 2015 at the end of his five-year term, but Somaliland’s parliament extended it by a further two years so that he could see the nation through a severe drought. 3) Dalai Lama row Somaliland is almost 100% Muslim, but the Dalai Lama and Buddhism came up in the election campaign, when Faisal Ali Warabe said “that Waddani Party supporters with their orange colour resemble Buddhist monks and their leader [Abdirahman Mohamed Irro] looks like the Dalai Lama”. His comments generated a massive backlash on social media, with some people accusing him of making a blasphemous statement. Waddani Party supporters responded defiantly, rallying in cities and towns in orange-coloured clothes and orange-painted bodies. BBC 4) Live TV debate For the first time, candidates took part in live television debates. The first one was organised by a youth group, Inspire, which said the debate elicited more than two million reactions on Twitter alone. One of the most contentious issues is the signing of an agreement allowing the United Arab Emirates to build a military base in the port city of Berbera. Faisal Ali Warabe and Muse Bihi Abdi support the deal, saying it would help Somaliland, which is not recognized by any state, gain international recognition. But Abdirahman Mohamed Irro opposes it, saying there was no proper agreement – and he accuses his two rivals of taking kickbacks from the UAE, an allegation which they strongly deny. BBC 5) Global funding, if not recognition Observers from 24 countries will be monitoring the election, despite Somaliland’s lack of international recognition. The observer mission, headed by Michael Walls of University College of London, is being funded by the UK government. Other nations which have contributed towards funding the estimated $20m cost of the election include the US, Denmark, Norway, and the European. No African state chipped in. The political campaigning for the race of the highest office in Somaliland is at its end. We have all seen the parties’ political campaigns and party rallies up and down the country. At this point we all know that it’s a two-camel race, between Kulmiye and Wadani, between Presidential Candidate Mr Muse B. Abdi and Mr Abdirahman A. Cirro. There where great expectations before the campaigning started, just before it we had the wonderfully organised Presidential debates. The campaign trail and The Straw that broke the Camel’s back. On the 21st October the campaign official started. The parties hit the campaign trails, these rallies where so hyped-up with emotions running mega high. It became a political spectacle of who can pull the highest crowds, and drum up the enthusiasm of the people. As usual the political rhetoric became very heated, accusations and counter accusations were exchanged, the smear campaign and name calling started. Kulmiye started off labelling Wadani as Pro-Somalia and being financed and supported from Mogadishu, seeking to take us back to the failed Union. Wadani in turn went to a whole another level and dug-up Somalilands’ own civil war episode labelling the Kulmiye candidate as the instigator. We all know that politics is a dirty spectacle, trying to pin dirt and short-comings on the opposing side is part of the game. But in Somailands’ delicately balanced tribal society, a society where emotions always run very high, that speech (‘Miyaad ilowday Muusow’ speech) in Boorame 26th October by Abdirahman A. Cirro, was seen by many as very divisive. He went as far as labelling all those who fought to liberate the Land he seeks to lead, as cowardly veteran imposters. Wadani leading up to the campaign had all the momentum on their side, the country was crying out for new politics. Instead, Wadani and its leader made the mistake of re-using the old corrupted and disgruntled career politicians as their posterchildren of the change that is coming. Mr Abdirahman A. Cirro, instead of highlighting a forward looking, positively minded future for our country, chose to give in to primitive minded tribalism to stir-up his electoral camp. Somaliland: Vote for your Country not your Kin This election is the most important political decision since Somaliland re-gained its independence in 1991. Yes, in that time we have had 4 successive presidents, who all contributed to where we are today. However, Somaliland lacks political energy, President Silaayo’s 7-year tenure, was only truly promising and energetic in its first two years, and since the health of the President took its toll, Somaliland has been on limp mode for the last 5 years. In today’s modern age of digital, and infrastructural revolution, if we don’t elect someone relatively physically fit, strong minded and capable of taking tough decisions we will be so far left behind in the world that even the term ‘3rd world country’ won’t apply to us anymore. Imagine, today is 16th November and it is announced that Abdirahman A. Cirro, is the President of Somaliland. In this perilous time in the region we live in, full of dangers and risks including, Al-Shabaab, Puntland border disputes, Somalia’s claim to our sovereignty, Yemen conflict spreading to our shores, potential militias forming in Eastern regions around Buhoodle, Ethiopian Oromos instigating conflicts, diplomatic chess for regional supremacy between global powers (Turkey+ Qatar v. Rest of Gulf v. Iran v. America+Israel etc) commercial and economic expansions around the globe. Wadani wins the elections and Abdirahman A Cirro is sworn in, power is wholly transfer to him, he moves into the Presidential palace and takes months putting his government patiently together, no cabinet is known, fighting for posts is conducted in the open, internal party rows are in the national and international press, the new government is in chaos even before it is fully functioning, Party Leader Xirsi X Ali appoints himself into multiple non-existing newly created ministries, and agencies, the country becomes a total laughing stock in the region and our long fight for recognition is put into the dustbin. Before you know it, Amisom is patrolling our streets and Xirsi X Ali the President of regional state of Somaliland is shipping our taxes from Berbera and Wajaale to Mogadishu. Ok, this may seem abit fictional and won’t really happen, but the point I am trying to make is obviously clear. Abdirahman A Cirro is not the right leader to lead Somaliland at this point in its quest. He is not a strong enough leader to form a swift robust cabinet, he won’t be strong enough to keep Xirsi A Ali in check, he won’t be resolute enough to banish and deal with any armed militia within Somaliland eastern borders, and he won’t be stubborn enough to resist outside interest in conspiring against our interests. Now imagine, its 16th November and Kulmiye wins the election, Muse Bixi Abdi, is sworn in and moves into the Presidential palace. He moves swiftly and assembles his robust, technocratic cabinet, appointing amongst others Prof Ismail Samater; Foreign Minister, Academic Mohamed Ali Bile; Education Minister, Economist Jamal A Hussein; Finance Minister, other new young generation in national ministries, ensuring minorities get an equal share in Government, fully incorporating the Eastern provinces in the national development plan, and assigning experienced diplomats such as Abdillahi M Duale, Edna Adan, Dr Sacad A Shire to the African Union, European Union, IGAD and other organisations to push the international recognition of Somaliland. It will become abundantly clear that our neighbours will give Somaliland its due respect with a strong leader in charge. Muse B. Abdi undoubtedly has his share of shortcomings, but in him Somaliland will have someone with courage to take calculated risks to achieve his goals, integrity and honesty to uphold justice, humility to admit errors, give credit to other and surrounds himself with sound advice. Somaliland will prosper under his leadership. He is tough against our enemies, liberal amongst his people and experienced in Somaliland politics to get us through the tough times that we will undoubtedly face. Somaliland doesn’t have a better candidate than Muuse B Abdi at this time. The election is now two days away, many will still be undecided, some will make their mind up in the polling stations itself, to all those looking to vote on the 13th November vote for your country and no your kin. Somaliland ha noolaato-Long live Somaliland. Husen Ismail ismailhusen@hotmail.com
