Late last month, roughly 80 immigrant men from Somalia, Kenya, and Sudan arrived at a remote, for-profit detention center in West Texas to await deportation. In the week that followed, the men were pepper-sprayed, beaten, threatened, taunted with racial slurs, and subjected to sexual abuse. The treatment they endured amounted to multiple violations of federal law and grave human rights abuses — and it all happened over the course of a single week. These are the findings of chilling new report by a collection of Texas-based legal advocacy groups. Source: Hiiraan Online

Former Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was reportedly denied a U.S. Visa after being booked to speak at two New England area events. The now infamous ‘Trump Ban’ has reportedly prevented the former president from travelling to the Cambridge, Massachusetts to deliver a keynote speech at the 9th Annual African Development Conference at Harvard University; as well as South Portland, Maine to speak at the World Affairs Council of Maine in a presentation titled “Somalia the Crossroads: Opportunities + Challenges Post-Civil War”. The cancellation was announced by the World Affairs Council of Maine who posted in a since-deleted post on their facebook page and on their website. “World Affairs Council of Maine regrets to share that H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was denied visa issuance by the U.S. Consulate in Somalia under Executive Order 13769, Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States. Somalia is one of the six Muslim countries included in the travel ban. President Hassan is therefore unable to present as Keynote Speaker at Harvard’s African Development Conference this weekend or at the World Affairs Council’s event on Tuesday.” Although the World Affairs Council of Maine said Mohamud was banned under Executive Order 13769, that Executive Order was revoked and replaced by Executive Order 13780 and further expanded by Presidential Proclamation 9645 which explicitly restricts travel from eight nations, six of them predominantly Muslim: Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Chad, North Korea and Venezuela. The African Development Conference has not announced a cancellation of their event, and at the time of writing, their event is still scheduled. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has visited the U.S. several times while serving as the President of Somalia, including visits to the U.N General Assembly in New York and the White House. This now-deleted Facebook post by the World Affairs Council of Maine announces the cancellation of his appearance as the keynote speaker at their event. The group says the former president was denied a visa under the controversial ‘Trump Ban’. PHOTO: TWITTER ( @AbdisalamAato ) The VISA rejection comes weeks after another high-profile African dignitary was allegedly denied entry into the U.S. Earlier this month, several African media outlets were reporting that Liberia’s Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor was either denied or given offered a ‘restricted visa’ to attend the UN’s 62nd session of the Commission on the Status of Women in New York. The United States Embassy has previously said that the country’s “privacy laws” forbids it from discussing visa and immigration issues with anyone other than the person concerned. “U.S. privacy laws prohibit us from discussing any person’s visa application status, immigration status, or citizenship status with anyone other than the person in question,” the embassy said in a release. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama greet His Excellency Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, and Mrs. Qamar Ali Omar, in the Blue Room during a U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit dinner at the White House, Aug. 5, 2014. [Official White House Photo by Amanda Lucidon] Somalia’s current President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo who holds dual U.S. and Somali citizenship has insisted that he wants Somalia off the immigration ban. In an interview with VOA a day after his election he said he would work to convey the message. “It is part of my responsibility to talk about this issue with the U.S. government by conveying our message to the president and his government that the Somali people are really good, hard-working people,” Farmajo said. “They raise their families in the United States. So we will see if he can change that policy and exclude Somalis from that list.” US visa denials for African invitees have forced the cancellation of a US-Africa Energy Summit scheduled for later this last September. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud joins a growing list of foreign dignitaries that were reportedly denied entry into the U.S in 2018 that include Kosovo Prime Minister M Ramush Haradinaj, Serbian General Ljubisa Dikovic, and Argentine Ex-Foreign Minister Hector Timerman. Every night at midnight, little Halima Salah wakes with a start, screams – and is so terrified she throws up. It is always the same nightmare. She is back in Yemen, where a Saudi Arabian bombing campaign has devastated millions of lives. A campaign that is armed and equipped by Britain. Nearly three years ago, Halima was playing outside the family home in the port of Aden when Saudi forces dropped a bomb, instantly killing two of her friends. The missile that ended their lives was highly likely to have been made in the UK. Tomorrow marks the third anniversary of the conflict in Yemen. In that time, UK firms have made £6billion selling arms to Saudi Arabia with Government approval. And in the course of 15,000 air strikes, British-made bombs and fighter jets have helped hit 800 schools, killed 1,600 children and maimed thousands more like Halima. James Denselow, of Save the Children, warns today: “Tens of thousands more could die this year.” Halima was just five when the blast knocked her unconscious and left her almost blind and barely able to walk. Her life was saved because her father Anwar, 56, dragged her limp body from the rubble and took her to a medical centre where she was treated for shrapnel wounds. “When I found her I thought she was dead,” Anwar says. “I got her to a doctor, but that’s when we knew we had to leave. We don’t know who is paying for the bombs but we just want it to stop.” The conflict has forced almost 50,000 people to flee Yemen. And it shames Britain’s close relationship with Saudi Arabia. This month, Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman dined with Theresa May and the Queen. glleryc May claims she raised “deep concerns” with the prince about the world’s worst humanitarian crisis unfolding in Yemen, with 11.3 million children affected. Yet it’s understood the Foreign Office is about to rubber stamp arms giant BAE Systems’ sale of 48 Typhoon fighters to Saudi Arabia. To mark the conflict anniversary, Save the Children will hand a 60,000 signature petition to No 10 calling for such sales to be suspended. Anwar and wife Iqra, 33, fled Yemen days after the bomb, taking wounded Halima and their nine other children to make the treacherous crossing to Somalia where there is civil war and a drought. It is a hotbed of Islamic extremist groups, and so called White Widow Samantha Lewthwaite, the widow of 7/7 bomber Germaine Lindsay, is rumoured to be there. Yet it is a safe haven compared to Yemen. Bombs have hit hospitals and food shipments, pushing the country to the brink of famine. Lack of food and proper medical supplies has triggered almost a million reported cases of cholera, thought to be the worst outbreak since records began. Like many people who have witnessed the horrific violence first hand, bewildered little Halima finds it hard to speak about the bomb or her dead friends. Abishimo Hamed, 40, understands her pain. A native Somali, she fled her home country 20 years ago to escape the civil war and build a new life in Yemen, working as a cleaner to support her three teenage children. Now war has again turned her life upside down – and driven her back to Somalia. Her decision was made when a pregnant friend was travelling on a bus with her five children when it was targeted by war planes. “They thought the bus was carrying bombs,” she said. “My friend and her children were killed with everyone else. “There were body parts everywhere. Some were really badly burned.” Nine days later, Abishimo and her children fled back to Somalia with the help of a man who hid them among livestock in a boat crossing the Gulf. The family now lives in a refugee camp hut in Garowe, in the Puntland region of the country. A few shacks along we find Muzamal Ibrahim, 26. He was caught in another bus attack in 2016. He lost his left arm. He said: “I lost so much blood I almost died.” In Yemen, he washed cars for a living, but in Somalia he has been reduced to begging for food. Another bombing survivor cradles her three-month-old baby (Image: Sunday Mirror) Last year, his wife gave birth to triplets. All three died from malnutrition. Muzamal says: “In Yemen, before the war, we had food and the children could go to school. Here, we have nothing.” Fellow refugee Zaynab Omar, 25, fled Yemen shortly after the war broke out, worried for her children. Yet the drought and food shortages in Somalia have torn her life apart. Eight months ago, her daughters Yasmin, two, and Aisha, one, died from malnutrition and cholera two days apart. She says: “I’ve since had twins and I think one of them is malnourished. “The doctors have told me to take her to hospital, but I don’t have the money. Maybe if the war in Yemen hadn’t happened Yamsin and Aisha would still be here.” Fadumo Ahmed also left Yemen because she feared for the life of her son Bashir. A map showing Yemen in relation to Somalia She had a good life before the war, working in a beauty salon in a town called Mukala while her husband worked for a petrol company. Now, she begs local shopkeepers for food to keep her family alive. She says: “Leaving Yemen behind was so tragic, but we had no choice. “I have seen bombs going off everywhere, lots of deaths and injuries, smoke everywhere. I’ve lost friends and seen others maimed. “Rebel groups have taken people from their houses and slaughtered them, then taken their bloody clothes to give back to their families as a warning.” All Fadumo and the rest of these shattered families want is to go home and return to their old lives. But as Save the Children predicts the fourth year of the war could be its deadliest yet, it seems a distant dream. Anwar says: “My children know nowhere but their homeland. But now they are scared of it. “We long to go back but we can’t. It’s just not safe.” And it’s likely to get a lot more dangerous if more British-made war jets with Saudi Arabian pilots end up in the skies above devastated Yemen. No end in sight for the conflict ignited by the Arab Spring The Yemen conflict has its roots in the 2010 Arab Spring, a revolutionary wave of battles for reform in several countries. An uprising saw president Ali Abdullah Saleh replaced by deputy Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi. But he struggled to deal with attacks by separatist groups such as the Muslim Houthi movement. It gained a foothold in the north in 2014 before trying to to take control of the country. Alarmed by the Houthi groups’ supposed links to Iran, nine Arab states led by Saudi Arabia have been trying to restore the previous government. They have launched a sustained bombing campaign with support from the UK, the USA and France. But three years on, both sides are entrenched, and UN peace deal attempts have failed. How you can help end this crisis By James Denselow, Save the children’s head of conflict and humanitarian policy and advocacy For the past three years, children in Yemen have been bombed and starved with utter impunity. Thousands have died in their homes or in hospitals as they waited in vain for medicines or life-saving equipment to reach them. Tens of thousands more could die this year alone if urgent action is not taken to end the violence. Children who once felt they had a future have seen their cities and dreams turned to rubble. Half of all hospitals have now been damaged or destroyed. Hundreds of schools have been levelled or attacked, and four million children are on the brink of famine. Britain has both moral and legal obligations to use its close relationship with Saudi Arabia to ensure arms aren’t used indiscriminately, killing and maiming children. What guarantees do the UK have that British-made weapons will not be used as part of an aerial campaign that has already hit 800 Yemen schools? British firms have sold more than £6billion worth of weapons to Saudi Arabia since the war in Yemen escalated three years ago. The saddest thing is all of this suffering is man-made. All we need is political will from all the warring parties to end the bloodshed and fully relax the blockade so humanitarian and commercial supplies can enter Yemen. Without this, the fourth year of its war will likely be its deadliest yet. Your donation could change the course of the war for a child in Yemen or now in Somalia. You could help stop children starving by helping us treat malnutrition and deliver food. You could help us distribute hygiene kits, set up treatment centres and rehydration points to stop the spread of diseases like cholera. And you could help us ensure children have safe places to learn, play, and begin to come to terms with what they’ve been through. Visit this site to donate today. Source: – Mirror

Slapping a large piece of equipment wrapped in packing materials, Dr Mohamed Hussein Aden smiles: “The Swiss sent us this but unfortunately not with the instruction manual so we don’t know how to use it. It’s sat here for a good few years now. Shame really.” The ceiling of the theatre is sagging and the operating table stained and split. It’s a far cry from Harrow, north London, where Aden lived and worked before returning in 2012 to Somalia, from where he fled as a refugee in 1994. Now he is the director of Galkayo hospital, the main facility for the inhabitants of Somalia’s third city and for those living for hundreds of miles around in the drought-hit countryside. “I came back in 2012. We Somalians have always felt a duty, an obligation, to support those back home, and now we are coming back, bringing the skills back, engineering, building, medicine. So many of our politicians are from the diaspora,” said Aden, 62, who harbours political ambitions. Four of his six children have returned with him, he said, seeing Somalia’s fragile peace as an opportunity. Somalia’s president, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, has dual US and Somalian citizenship. In his cabinet and ministries British accents vie with those from US, Canada and other parts of Europe. The aid agencies and civil society are full of young people like Saredo Mohamed, 22, born in Canada to Somali parents, who is relearning her mother tongue and culture. “You see a lot of people in my age group coming back, it is a wonderful opportunity to give back and also to learn about my culture,” she said. Mohamed is working at Galkayo Education Centre for Peace and Development, founded by her aunt Hawa Aden Mohamed, another returnee from Canada. The sheer numbers of diaspora returnees is unique to a country that has seen decades of war and lawlessness. In 2015, two million Somalis living outside the country were sending home so much money to support the households who stayed behind that the remittances accounted for 23% of GDP. There have been tensions. Local Somalis have sometimes demanded more rights than those who have spent decades or whole lives abroad while returnees have been accused of assuming superiority due to their education and experience. A symposium was held in the capital Mogadishu last June to attempt to bridge such gaps. “Such efforts hope to see people who have stayed and foreign returnees rebuilding Somalia together,” said Aden. “The diaspora has a big role, many of the young people come back and have a real culture shock. My son, 25, was really shocked when he arrived from London, it took 35 days for him to assimilate, now he is drinking camel’s milk! “Myself, I came back after 28 years because my sister was dying. I said I would stay three months. Here I am after five years.” Aden shows the work being done on a new building in the hospital’s compound: “Eighty per cent of the funding comes directly from the diaspora, mainly Europe, the Scandinavians, Denmark. We are really changing the town.” The construction work is being done by a company owned by Ali Dhaaf Abdi, aged 42, fresh from Norway. His Norwegian-born wife is still adjusting to this dusty city where only a handful of buildings are over one storey, and only one more than two storeys. “We will soon change that,” said Abdi. “For $25,000 I can build you a house for a family of four … I am building houses here for people from Sweden, from Canada, from the UK. “I came back because while it is easy to make a business in Europe, it is difficult to grow bigger. Here I can expand. And this is my country. Now I have 120 employees. They welcome me here for the jobs. “I do miss the security, Galkayo is very fragile. I also miss supermarkets and the high quality of clothing, but the education is the same. We have good wi-fi, my children come and go between here and Oslo.” Source: – The Guardian

Seventeen-year-old Saida Dahir’s blistering spoken word performance about her fear of school shootings and the political hypocrisy that follows electrified the crowd at Salt Lake City’s March for Our Lives on Saturday afternoon. A refugee from Somalia and current junior in high school, Dahir tells Mother Jones that she wants to to address intersectionality in the gun safety movement that has spread throughout the country in the wake of the Parkland, Florida, massacre that left 14 students and three adults dead. She tackled everything from the racial bias that shows up in discussions of mass shooters—”If all Muslims are terrorists, what is this white boy?”—to the morally bankrupt political class: “We all know who is Congress’ real benefactor.” Source: Hiiraan Online
