Muqdisho (Caasimada Online) – Ra’iisul Wasaarihii hore ee Soomaaliya, Xasan Cali Kheyre, ayaa qoraal uu soo saaray ku sheegay in ay si weyn u damqisay in argagaxisadu ay dib u qabsadeen deegaanka Masaajid Cali Gaduud, oo ay Ciidamada Qalabka Sida iyo kuwa deegaanku ka xoreeyeen laba sano ka hor. Kheyre ayaa sheegay inuu uga digayo bulshada Soomaaliyeed in deegaan ay argagaxisadu la wareegeen loo fasiro fashil ku yimid qof, koox, ama beel gaar ah, taas oo uu sheegay inay bulshada kala qeybineyso, midnimada ummadda kala dhantaaleyso, isla markaana hiillo iyo dhiirrigelin u tahay argagaxisada arxanka daran. Hoos ka aqriso qoraalka Kheyre oo dhameystiran: Waxaa i damqisay in argagaxisadu ay maanta dib u qabsadeen deegaanka Masaajid Cali Gaduud, oo ay Ciidamada Qalabka Sida iyo halyeeyada deegaanku ka xoreeyeen laba sano ka hor, ayna nooga shahiideen halyeeyo qaran oo naftooda qaaliga ah u huray xoreynta dadkooda iyo dalkooda. Argagaxisadu waa caqabadda ugu weyn ee maanta hortaagan horumarka Soomaaliya, waxayna duullaan ku yihiin guud ahaan dadka iyo deegaannada Soomaaliyeed. Soomaalidu waa ul iyo diirkeed, waana fashil u soo hoyday qof kasta oo Soomaali ah mar kasta oo ay argagaxisadu naga qabsadaan taako ka mid ah dhulkeenna hooyo. Haddaba, waxaan bulshada Soomaaliyeed uga digayaa in deegaan ay argagaxisadu la wareegeen loo fasiro fashil ku yimid qof, koox, ama beel gaar ah. Fasirkaasi wuxuu bulshada kala qeybinayaa, midnimada ummaddana wuu kala dhantaalayaa, wuxuuna u yahay hiillo iyo dhiirrigelin argagaxisada arxanka daran. Guulihii horay looga gaaray la dagaallanka argagaxisada iyo deegaannadii laga xoreeyay waxaa lagu xaqiijiyay wadajirka dadka Soomaaliyeed, shacab iyo dowladba, taas oo tusaale nool u ah awoodda wadajirka iyo in midnimadu tahay jidka kaliya ee looga guuleysan karo argagaxisada. Waxaan Madaxweyne Xasan Sheekh Maxamuud ugu baaqayaa inuu qaato kaalinta hoggaamineed ee samatabixinta dadka iyo dalka, meel iska dhigo waxyaabihii sababay in lagu kala irdhoobo siyaasadda, bulshada Soomaaliyeedna u fidiyo gogol qaran oo looga tashanayo samatabixinta dalka, si wadajir looga shaqeeyo xoreynta dalka iyo ciribtirka khawaarijta. Waxaan ku jirnaa tobanka dambe ee bisha barakeysan ee Ramadaan. Waxaan guud ahaan ummadda Soomaaliyeed ku boorrinayaa in loo duceeyo dalka iyo dadka Soomaaliyeed, si aan kala har lahaynna u garab istaagno Ciidamada Qalabka Sida iyo dadaallada dalka looga xoreynayo khawaarijta.

Muqdisho (Caasimada Online) – Warar is khilaafsan ayaa ka soo baxaya dagaal shalay ku dhex maray ciidamada dowladda federaalka oo ay weheliyaan kuwa deegaanka, iyo kooxda Al-Shabaab, deegaanka Masaajid Cali Gaduud ee gobolka Shabeellaha Dhexe. Wararka ayaa sheegaya in dagaalkaasi sababay in kooxda Al-Shabaab ay gacanta ku dhigto xero ciidan. Weerarka ayaa mid culus oo ku bilowday qaraxyo, kadibna uu xigay weerar toos ah oo Al-Shabaab ay ku qaadeen fariisimaha ciidamada Xoogga Dalka Soomaaliya iyo kuwa deegaanka ee Macawiisleyda.Khasaaro dhimasho iyo dhaawac ah ayaa la soo werinayaa. Madaxweyne Xasan Sheekh oo Arbacadii Cadale kula hadlay ciidamada dowladda iyo kuwa deegaanka ayaa yiri: “Maanta cid iga dambeyso oo aad sugeysaan ma jirto. Aniga oo ah Madaxweynaha Jamhuuriyadda Federaalka Soomaaliya ayaan idinla jooga.” Muhiimadda Masaajid Cali Gaduud Deegaanka Masaajid Cali Gaduud wuxuu hoos yimaadaa deegaanno badan marka juqraafi ahaan la eego, wuxuuna muhiimad gaar ah u leeyahay dagaalka lagula jiro kooxda Al-Shabaab. Labada dhinac ee is haya—ciidamada dowladda federaalka iyo Al-Shabaab—ayaa u muuqda kuwo ku loolamaya gacan ku haynta deegaankaas. Hase yeeshee, la wareegista deegaankaasi ayaa adkaatay maadaama uu yahay magaalo u furan tuulooyin badan isla markaana aan lahayn difaac xooggan. “Dowladda marka la eego, runtii dagaalka Masaajid Cali Gaduud muhiimad gaar ah uma siineyso in si joogto ah loo joogo. Waxaadse mooddaa inay tahay meel munaasab ah oo labada dhinac ay awooddooda ku soo bandhigayaan,” ayuu yiri Axmed Kaboole, oo ah khabiir ka faallooda arrimaha amniga. “Dowladdu waxay dooneysaa inay firfircooni muujiso oo ay deegaannada la wareegtay gacanta ku hayso, balse aad bay u muuqataa in halkaas uusan ka jirin ciidan joogto ah oo difaaca deegaanka. Dhanka kale, Al-Shabaab waa koox guurguurta oo si sahal ah deegaanka ku soo gali karta, shacabka dhibaateyn karta, kadibna ka baxda. Arrintaas waxay saameyn ku yeelan kartaa wada-shaqeynta shacabka iyo dowladda,” ayuu hadalkiisa ku daray. Kaboole wuxuu sidoo kale sheegay in ujeedka ugu weyn ee Al-Shabaab ka leedahay deegaankaasi ay tahay inay niyad-jabiyaan shacabka, una muujiyaan inay weli awood ku leeyihiin deegaannadaas. Magaaladu ma laha difaacyo adag oo dowladda u suuragelin kara in ay si joogto ah u ilaaliso. “Magaaladan waxa ay muddo dheer hoos tagtay Al-Shabaab, marka la eego. Haddii ay gacanta ku dhigaan, waxay u sahlaysaa inay weerarro ka abaabulaan dhanka Jowhar, Baladweyne iyo Galgaduud, iyadoo dhammaan gobolladaasi muhiim u yihiin isku xirka kooxdu,” ayuu yiri. Duqeymaha cirka iyo dagaalka Al-Shabaab Dowladda Soomaaliya ayaa dhowaan dib u billowday dagaalka ka dhanka ah Al-Shabaab, kaas oo hakad ku yimid muddooyinkii u dambeeyay. Dagaalladii ugu cuslaa ee ugu dambeeyay ayaa ka dhacay deegaanno ka tirsan gobollada Shabeellaha Dhexe iyo Hiiraan, gaar ahaan Ceel-Baraf iyo Daaru-Nicma, halkaas oo Al-Shabaab laga saaray mar kale. Duqeymaha cirka ayaa sidoo kale lala beegsaday kooxda. “Duqeymaha waa bartilmaameedyo qorsheysan, waxaana fuliya dowladaha aan saaxiibka nahay ee beesha caalamka. Annaguna waxaan tilmaannaa halka ay joogaan. Duqeymuhu waxa ay ka dhaceen Shabeellaha Dhexe, Shabeellaha Hoose iyo Jubada Hoose, waana sii wadeynaa. Meel kasta oo ay joogaan waxay noo yihiin bartilmaameed,” ayuu yiri wasiiru-dowlaha Gaashaandhigga Soomaaliya, Cumar Cali Cabdi. Wuxuu sidoo kale sheegay in duqeymahaas lagu dilay horjoogayaal badan oo ka tirsanaa kooxda Al-Shabaab. Mareykanka ayaa duqeymahaas u kala saara kuwa qorsheysan iyo kuwa isdifaac ah.

Gobolka ayaa weli la daalaa dhacaya saamayntii dagaalkii culusaa ee socday laba sano, kaas oo ku dhammaaday heshiis nabadeed oo sanadkii 2022 lagu gaaray magaalada Pretoria ee dalka Koonfur Afrika, heshiiskaas oo lagu dhisay maamulka ku-meel gaarka ah ee hadda jira. Dagaalka ayaa ka mid ahaa kuwii ugu dhimashada badnaa tobankii sano ee la soo dhaafay, isaga oo galaaftay nolosha ku dhawaad 600,000 qof. Waxaa isku dagaallamay kooxda mucaaradka Tigray iyo ciidamada federaalka Itoobiya oo ay taageerayeen maleeshiyooyin deegaanka ah iyo ciidamada dalka Eritrea. “Dowladda federaalka, iyadoo tixgalinaysa xaaladaha dhabta ah ee dhulka ka jira, waxay qaaday tallaabo ay muddo hal sano ah ugu kordhinayso waajibaadka maamulka ku-meel gaarka ah,” ayuu ku qoray Ra’iisul Wasaare Abiy Ahmed bartiisa X. Waxa uu intaa raaciyay in maamulka hadda jira uusan ku guulaysan inuu dhamaystiro howlihiisa muhiimka ah muddadii loo qorsheeyay. Abiy oo fariintiisa ku qoray afka Tigrinya ayaa sheegay inay lagama maarmaan noqotay in madax cusub loo magacaabo maamulka ku-meel gaarka ah ee Tigray, kaas oo beddeli doona Getachew Reda, balse ma sheegin wakhtiga rasmiga ah ee lagu beddelayo. Getachew kama jawaabin codsi faallo oo ay u dirtay wakaaladda wararka AFP. Khilaafka Getachew iyo Debretsion Xiisadda hadda ka taagan Tigray ayaa ka dhalatay khilaaf gudaha ah oo la xiriira awood qaybsiga, kaas oo u dhexeeya Getachew iyo Debretsion Gebremichael, oo ah hoggaamiyaha Jabhadda Xoreynta Dadka Tigray (TPLF). “Haddii si wanaagsan loo maareeyo xilliga kala-guurka, waxay noqon kartaa fursad looga baxo xiisadda hadda jirta,” ayuu AFP u sheegay Wondimu Asamnew, oo aad ugu dhow Debretsion. “Labadii sano ee maamulka uu hayay Getachew Reda waxaa lagu tilmaami karaa mid xiisado iyo iska hor imaadyo badan lahaa; hadda waxaan u baahanahay dowlad xasiloon,” ayuu sii raaciyay. Inkasta oo xabbaddu istaagtay, haddana fulin la’aanta qayb ka mid ah heshiiskii Pretoria ayaa sii hurisay khilaafka ka dhex jira hoggaanka siyaasadeed ee gobolka Tigray. Taageerayaasha hubaysan ee Debretsion ayaa bishan la wareegay maamulka degmada Adigrat, oo ah magaalada labaad ee ugu weyn gobolka Tigray, kuna dhow xadka Eritrea, waxayna meesha ka saareen duqii magaalada ee uu magacaabay Getachew. Kooxda Debretsion ayaa sidoo kale la wareegtay xarunta maamulka magaalada Mekele, iyagoo dib ugu soo celiyay duqii magaalada ee ay iyagu doorteen iyo idaacadda deegaanka. Awoodda Getachew oo sii yaraaneysay Kjetil Tronvoll, oo ah khabiir arrimaha Geeska Afrika ahna borofisar ka tirsan Jaamacadda Cusub ee Oslo, ayaa sheegay inuusan la yaabin isbeddellada hadda socda. Kooxda Getachew ayaa si tartiib-tartiib ah u waayay gacan-ku-hayntii maamulka, wuxuuna sheegay in awoodda Getachew ay sii yaraanaysay. “Ra’iisul Wasaare Abiy Ahmed ayaa si dhow ula socday isbeddelka xaaladda loollanka siyaasadeed,” ayuu Tronvoll u sheegay AFP. Wuxuu intaas ku daray inay ahayd waqti munaasib ah in dowladda federaalka ay xilka ka qaaddo Getachew maadaama uu dhammaaday waqtigii maamulka kumeel gaarka ah. Midowga Afrika oo xaruntiisu tahay magaalada Addis Ababa ayaa walaac xooggan ka muujiyay xiisadaha cusub ee gobolka. Sidoo kale, dalalka Maraykanka, Ingiriiska iyo Midowga Yurub ayaa ugu baaqay dhammaan dhinacyada inay xiisadda qaboojiyaan, isla markaana si degdeg ah u bilaabaan wadahadallo xal lagu raadinayo.

Weerarrada ayaa ka dhacay Buuraha Golis, oo ah dhul buuraley ah oo ku yaalla waqooyiga Soomaaliya, kaas oo muddo dheer xarun u ahaa kooxda xiriirka la leh Daacish ee ka howlgasha Geeska Afrika. Saraakiisha ayaa ku tilmaamay inuu ahaa hoggaamiye muhiim u ah howlaha dibadda, isla markaana mas’uul ka ahaa dirista dagaalyahannada jihaad-doonka ah ee gudaha u gala waddamada Mareykanka iyo Yurub. Duqeyntaasi oo sidoo kale lagu qaaday Buuraha Golis ayaa lagu burburiyay godad iyo bohollo ay ku dhuumanayeen madaxda sar-sare ee ISIS-ta Soomaaliya. Kooxda Daacishta Soomaaliya ayaa la aas-aasay sanadkii 2015-kii, waxaana sameeyay xubno hore uga tirsanaa Al-Shabaab. Tan iyo markaas waxay isku ballaarisay awooddeeda, iyadoo noqotay halis weyn oo gobolka ka jirta. Warbixinno sirdoon ayaa qiyaasaya in tirada dagaalyahannada kooxdaasi ay u dhaxeyso 600 ilaa 1,500 dagaalyahan, iyadoo tiradu isbeddelayso marka loo eego qorista dagaalyahannada ajaanibta ah iyo xiriirada kooxdu ay la leedahay ururrada kale ee xagjirka ah. Daacishta Soomaaliya ayaa sheegatay mas’uuliyadda dilal qorsheysan, qaraxyo, iyo weerarro isdaba joog ah oo ka dhan ahaa ciidamada Soomaaliya iyo kuwa caalamiga ah. AFRICOM ma aysan shaacin faahfaahin gaar ah oo la xiriirta weerarradii Talaadada, iyadoo sabab looga dhigay ilaalinta amniga iyo xogta sirta ah ee howlgalka.

Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — The Somali National Bureau of Statistics (SNBS) today published its 2024 annual report. The report contains conflicting information about data collection and what a retired statistician described as “politically motivated statistics that could fuel distrust.” In the report, Puntland is mentioned only twice —not as a Federal Member State, but once as “Puntland region”— to highlight data collection constraints that prevented the SNBS from gathering relevant data in Somalia’s founding federal member state. The SNBS 2024 report references Bosaso, the commercial city of Puntland, stating that it has 31,491 businesses. Meanwhile, Hargeisa is referred to as Waqooyi Galbeed, but the report gives the impression that the SNBS faced no data collection barriers in parts of the Federal Republic of Somalia controlled by the secessionist Somaliland administration. Anomalies in the SNBS 2024 Report raise questions about the independence of the Somali National Bureau of Statistics. These anomalies raise questions about the reliability of the SNBS annual report and its usefulness for policymaking. “The Federal Government of Somalia clearly urged the SNBS not to mention the political causes of incomplete datasets and misleading information that call into question the professionalism of SNBS staff,” said a statistical research methods lecturer in Mogadishu, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The Puntland State of Somalia government is likely to distance itself from the SNBS report. “Puntland sees the report as unreliable and politically divisive,” said a senior officer from Puntland’s Ministry of Planning. © Puntland Post, 2025 The post SNBS Report Sparks Questions Over Data Reliability in Somalia appeared first on Puntland Post.

Xasan Sheekh ayaa hadda qorsheynaya inuu xoogga saaro duqeymaha, isagoo maaanta kasoo laabtay furimaha dagaalka, kadib markii saakay Al-Shabaab ay dagaal kula wareegeen deegaanka Masaajid Cali Gaduud oo ku xiga degmadii uu xalay Xasan Sheekh ku hoyday ee Cadale. Xasan Sheekh oo shalay ka baxay Muqdisho ayaa sii maray degmada Raagaceelle oo ciidan xoog leh oo dadka deegaanka ah uu ku diyaarsanaa, wuxuuna kula balamay inay is difaacaan oo dhulkooda aysan ka cararin, wuxuuna u gudbay Cadale oo saldhig uu ka dhigtay. Culeys badan ayaa ka jira dagaalka dhulka ah, waxaana gacanta Al-Shabaab galay dhul badan, lama garanayo meesha ay wax ka qaldan yihiin, balse waxaa muuqata in habac badan uu ka jiro dhanka hoggaaminta dagaalka ee dowladda.

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia’s National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) has extended the deadline for political party registration by 21 days, from March 31 to April 21, 2025, ahead of planned June local elections. NIEC Chairman Abdikarin Ahmed Hassan announced the decision in Mogadishu, citing the need to give political associations more time to comply with new electoral regulations. Hassan emphasized that previously registered associations must also re-register for updated certification due to recent legislative changes. “Over the past few days, we held extensive discussions with previously registered groups and those still in the registration process,” Hassan said. “They requested a 21-day extension beyond the initial March 31 deadline.” Historic shift to direct elections Somalia is preparing for its first direct local council elections in June, a significant departure from the traditional clan-based voting system. Chairman Hassan described this as a historic step in returning electoral power to the Somali people. Voter registration will commence shortly, with trained electoral officials ready to manage the process across districts. However, the move toward direct elections has increased political tensions between Somalia’s federal government and regional administrations, notably Puntland and Jubbaland, which have openly opposed the central government’s electoral strategy. Both regions have suspended cooperation with the federal government, citing concerns over perceived attempts at centralizing political power. In December 2024, tensions escalated into violence when federal and regional troops clashed in Raskamboni over a disputed local election, highlighting the fragility of the current political environment. Implications of new electoral laws The recently enacted Political Associations and Parties Bill, approved by Somalia’s cabinet in August 2024, clearly distinguishes between political associations and parties. Associations must compete in local elections, with the top three subsequently recognized as national political parties qualified for national and regional elections. Under this law, political groups are also subject to stringent financial transparency and regulation guidelines and must participate in a public funding mechanism with contributions from federal and regional governments. Chairman Hassan clarified that previously registered political groups will not incur additional re-registration fees, emphasizing the commission’s commitment to an inclusive political process. Despite efforts to streamline the electoral process, Somalia faces significant hurdles, including ongoing security threats from Al-Shabaab, logistical issues in voter education and registration, and persistent political disputes among key stakeholders. The international community continues to urge political leaders in Somalia to engage in dialogue, emphasizing the necessity of cooperation and compromise for credible and peaceful elections. Somalia’s clan-based power-sharing Somalia’s political landscape has been characterized by a protracted transition, often shaped by intricate clan-based power-sharing arrangements. Historically, elections have primarily relied on indirect voting, where lawmakers chosen by clan delegates elect high-ranking officials. The current push for a direct “one person, one vote” system signifies a potential paradigm shift in Somali electoral practices. Supporters argue that it would bolster democratic legitimacy and directly empower citizens. Conversely, critics voice concerns about potential manipulation, lack of adequate infrastructure and security across all regions, and the risk of exacerbating existing clan tensions if such a significant change is not implemented through broad consensus and careful planning. Puntland has emerged as a leading voice of opposition against the federal government’s perceived unilateral approach to this electoral model, advocating for a more inclusive and consultative process involving all relevant stakeholders. Jubbaland has echoed these concerns, emphasizing the imperative of establishing a stable and secure environment before undertaking such a fundamental electoral transformation. The NIEC’s decision to extend the political party registration deadline could be seen as an attempt to provide additional time for parties to meet new regulatory requirements and potentially alleviate some immediate tensions surrounding electoral preparations. However, the underlying disagreements regarding the national electoral framework remain a formidable challenge as Somalia navigates its path towards future elections.

Mogadishu, Somalia – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is set to travel to Turkey for urgent talks and to sign new agreements just hours after returning from frontline areas where government forces are battling the Al-Shabaab militant group. The visit comes as Al-Shabaab claimed to have retaken a strategically important town in the Middle Shabelle region, highlighting the persistent security challenges facing the Horn of Africa nation. President Sheikh’s trip to Turkey, scheduled for Thursday, will focus on finalizing a deal for Turkish-made combat drones, according to sources familiar with the matter. Somalia has recently received several of these aircraft, which have been undergoing reactivation. The president is expected to meet with his Turkish counterpart and top executives from Bayraktar, a Turkish defense company that manufactures the drones. The agreements are anticipated to cover the full operationalization of the newly acquired drones across Somalia, with a particular focus on targeting areas where Al-Shabaab militants are active. While the specifics of the agreements remain undisclosed, it is understood that Somalia will require continued assistance with drone-launched munitions and training for Somali personnel who will operate the advanced aircraft, reported to be at least three in number and of two modern types. Al-Shabaab offensive in Middle Shabelle The president’s diplomatic push in Ankara coincides with a significant setback on the ground. On Wednesday morning, Al-Shabaab launched a fierce attack, beginning with vehicle-borne explosives, on the town of Masaajid Cali Gaduud in the Middle Shabelle region. This area, located near the town of Cadale, where President Sheikh spent the previous night, had been under government control since it was recaptured from Al-Shabaab two years ago. Local sources confirmed that after the initial explosions, Al-Shabaab fighters engaged in direct clashes with Somali government forces and the local pro-government militia known as Macawiisley. Al-Shabaab claimed in a statement that their fighters had entered and fully controlled the town and that operations were ongoing. Da’uud Haji Cirro, a spokesperson for the HirShabelle state, where Masaajid Cali Gaduud is located, confirmed the withdrawal of government forces but vowed that the militants would not hold the town overnight and would be driven out. “They will not spend the night in Masaajid Cali Gaduud,” he stated in a brief message. The attack underscores the ongoing challenges in the fight against Al-Shabaab, which frequently launches early morning assaults on government positions. Despite previous territorial gains by government forces, the group maintains a strong presence in parts of the country, particularly in the southern and central regions. President’s frontline engagement President Hassan Sheikh has been actively involved in directing the counter-offensive against Al-Shabaab in the Shabelle regions, which border the capital Mogadishu. On Tuesday, he visited the frontline town of Cadale, meeting with local clan militias in Raagaceelle and urging them to defend their territory. His presence in the area aimed to galvanize efforts to push back against the militants, who have been exerting pressure on previously liberated areas. However, the recent loss of Masaajid Cali Gaduud raises questions about the government’s current military strategy and leadership effectiveness. “ There is a lot of pressure in the ground war, and Al-Shabaab has taken a lot of territory. It is not known what is going wrong, but it seems there is a lot of weakness in the leadership of the government’s war,” a local observer noted. Turkey’s role in Somalia’s security Turkey has become a significant security partner for Somalia in recent years, providing military training, equipment, and infrastructure development. The acquisition of Turkish-made drones is a notable step in bolstering Somalia’s air capabilities against Al-Shabaab, which has relied on ambushes and ground attacks. The Bayraktar TB2 drones, which Somalia is believed to have acquired, have proven effective in various conflicts. They offer reconnaissance and precision strike capabilities. Their deployment could significantly enhance the Somali National Army’s ability to target Al-Shabaab’s strongholds and disrupt their operations. The upcoming agreement in Turkey is expected to solidify this security cooperation and provide Somalia with crucial tools in its long-standing fight against the Islamist insurgency. However, the recapture of Masaajid Cali Gaduud serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and persistent threats on the ground, even with enhanced military capabilities.

Could the Turkish Drones Supplied to Somalia Pose a Threat to Somaliland? The recent delivery of Turkish drones to Somalia has raised concerns and sparked debates about regional security dynamics, particularly regarding Somaliland. Given the complex history and ongoing tensions between Somaliland and Somalia, the presence of advanced military equipment in the region adds another layer of uncertainty. Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991, has maintained de facto autonomy for over three decades, operating with its own government, military, and institutions. Despite lacking international recognition, Somaliland has established relative stability compared to other parts of the region. However, Somalia continues to claim Somaliland as part of its territory, leading to strained relations and occasional military clashes along their disputed border. The introduction of Turkish drones into Somalia’s military arsenal has therefore raised questions about whether they could be used in a future conflict. Somalia has justified its acquisition of drones as part of its counterterrorism efforts against al-Shabaab, a militant group that remains a significant threat in the region. Turkey has been a key ally to Somalia, providing military training, equipment, and infrastructure support. While these drones are intended to strengthen Somalia’s defense capabilities, concerns persist in Somaliland that the weapons could be redirected for political or military pressure. Furthermore, Somaliland’s authorities may view the drone acquisition as an imbalance in military power, potentially undermining regional stability. In a worst-case scenario, the drones could embolden Somalia to take a more aggressive stance regarding its territorial claims. Conversely, diplomatic channels could be pursued to ensure transparency and prevent military escalation. Ultimately, whether the Turkish drones pose a direct threat to Somaliland will depend on Somalia’s intentions and how it chooses to deploy these assets. Regional and international actors, including Turkey, may also play a role in ensuring that the drones are used strictly for counterterrorism operations, rather than exacerbating political conflicts. Diplomacy, dialogue, and regional cooperation will be essential in preventing further tensions and maintaining peace in the Horn of Africa. Abdihafid Ismail Qaran News

Countering alarmist narratives on Al-Shabaab’s ‘power grab’
Deeq A. posted a topic in News - Wararka
In response to Adam Daud Ahmed’s op-ed, “From Insurgency to Power Grab: Al-Shabaab’s Deadly Advance on Mogadishu Signals Somalia’s Descent into Disaster,” published in the Addis Standard on March 21, 2025, a critical examination of its central assertions is warranted. Ahmed’s analysis, while aiming to highlight Somalia’s security challenges, presents an oversimplified and alarmist portrayal of Al-Shabaab’s capabilities and the Somali government’s resilience, necessitating a more nuanced and evidence-based assessment. Ahmed’s core argument, positing Al-Shabaab’s transition from an insurgency to a governing entity poised for the capture of Mogadishu, is fundamentally flawed. This narrative disregards the established pattern of Al-Shabaab’s fluctuating territorial control, characterized by a reliance on asymmetric warfare rather than sustained conventional dominance. This pattern indicates an insurgency focused on disruption, not the establishment of enduring governance. Furthermore, Ahmed’s analysis omits crucial context regarding the counterterrorism efforts of the Somali National Army (SNA) and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). Recent military operations have yielded demonstrable successes, reclaiming strategic territories and disrupting Al-Shabaab’s operational capacity, directly contradicting the notion of an imminent takeover. The depiction of the Somali federal government as a “failing entity” consumed by internal strife necessitates a more nuanced perspective. Political tensions within Somalia’s federal system, such as those with Puntland and Jubaland, reflect the inherent complexities of a developing federal structure. While significant, these disputes do not necessarily signify systemic collapse. The current administration’s efforts to unify regional states under a national security framework, alongside intensified military operations and increased civilian-military cooperation, demonstrate a proactive approach to security challenges. The assertion that the fall of Mogadishu would destabilize the Horn of Africa and lead to the establishment of a radical Islamist state is an overstatement. Unlike the Taliban, Al-Shabaab lacks widespread popular support, maintaining control through coercion rather than voluntary allegiance. The Somali population largely rejects the group’s extremist ideology. 1 Moreover, Somalia benefits from substantial military, intelligence, and financial support from international allies, including the United States, Turkey, Qatar, and the African Union, mitigating the risk of regional destabilization. 2 Simplistic comparisons with the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan fail to acknowledge the fundamentally different socio-political context in Somalia, characterized by a stronger tradition of resistance to extremist rule and a robust network of international support. Instead of alarmist pronouncements, a constructive approach necessitates a balanced analysis that acknowledges both the challenges and the progress in Somalia. This includes recognizing the government’s efforts to strengthen its security apparatus and address governance issues. The international community should prioritize sustained support for Somalia’s stabilization efforts, including military assistance, capacity building, and governance reforms. Emphasizing the resilience of the Somali people and the vital role of community-led resistance in countering Al-Shabaab’s influence is crucial. Sensationalist narratives undermine stability efforts and can create a self-fulfilling prophecy of despair. In conclusion, Ahmed’s op-ed, while intended to raise awareness, presents a distorted and counterproductive narrative. A more nuanced and evidence-based analysis is essential to inform effective policy and support Somalia’s progress towards stability. The focus must remain on fostering constructive engagement and recognizing the resilience of the Somali people.
