  1. AU urges world to help Somalia develop capacity to tackle terror threats Source: Xinhua 2018-04-18 22:00:02 MOGADISHU, April 18 (Xinhua) -- The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) on Wednesday called on the international community to help Somalia develop capacity to tackle the potent threats in the country. Senior AMISOM officials including security officials who ended their fourth Bi-annual Counter IED Conference in Mogadishu reached agreement on measures to tackle effectively the threat of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) that present a major threat to the country's stabilization process. "The conference resolved among others to encourage the use of forensics and intensify training of personnel to help counter the threat posed by IEDs," participants said in a joint statement issued by the AU mission. The conference acknowledged that the indiscriminate use of IEDs by al-Shabab militants posed a major risk to the realization of sustainable peace and stability in the Horn of Africa country and emphasized efforts that will decisively tackle the problem. The AU mission-backed conference brought together key stakeholders who included senior officials from Somali security institutions, AMISOM and international partners. Francisco Madeira, the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia, lauded the partners for their continued support and commitment to capacitating AMISOM personnel on how to deal with the threat of IEDs to security forces and the civilian populations. "We need this commitment and solidarity to continue until we are able to say that Mogadishu is really safe and dependable. That the MSRs (main supply routes) linking Mogadishu-Beletweyne; Mogadishu-Baidoa; Mogadishu-Barawe; Dhobley, Afamadow and Kismayo, Kansuma Bridge, are all passable, safe and free of IEDs," said Madeira. Salvator Harushimana, AMISOM Deputy Force Commander in Charge of Support and Logistics, called for greater collaboration between stakeholders in order to find a lasting solution to the IED problem. At least 3,000 civilians have been either killed or injured by IEDs in Somalia in the past three years, the UN Mine-Action Service (UNMAS), UN's demining agency, said in early April. It said the year 2017 was the deadliest, in large part due to an IED attack on Oct. 14 in Mogadishu which killed more than 500 people and injured over 300 in twin bombings.
  2. lol Now you placing yourself as knowing more than Turkey or Sudan of their interests. You seem to forget that the Sudanese are not only neighbours, but share water with Ethiopia which is more important to them than all the countries of the world combined. Its life sustaining resource. must change. wow. You also is completely off reality thinking that the mear mention of Ethiopia will get the Somali people everywhere to support you. That was maybe and that is maybe a political tool at one time. The reality now is very different. Why not borrow some pages from the blue book of Mr. Ghelleh?
  3. Why not take advice from Mr. Ghelleh on how to swim in this meky waters. The man is a Somali so you can speak to him without interpreter, the man is experienced, the man is in life thretening fight with UAE. Or steal some pages from his book.
  4. For the first time: Speaker of Parliament President of the Republic Prime minister of Ethiopia Are all Oromo. President cannot change since is elected for 6 years. Speaker will have to change. Candidates: Deputy speaker Amhara gets to be speaker and being woman and northerner may give additional points, The South had speaker before very competent who is now ambassador in France, A Somali or an Afar would be a first and helpful change.

  7. So now you want also to show that Ethiopia has side or part here, so you can try to rally those who see Ethiopia as enemy. FYI Ethiopia is in the same boat of being very close friends with Turkey and Sudan and Djibouti, but they do not try to make this issue even public let alone to make empty slogans of it. Djibouti has a bigger fight with UAE but you will never see Djibouti making an issue about it and spending all time as if it is do or die for the country. Still, the best course of action for SFG is find a way through Saudis, Kwait, Oman to calm the waters instead of giving amunition to UAE everyday.
  8. You are correct, but the world is not fair. Somalia is far close to the action than Sudan, Ethiopia or Djibouti. UAE was able to kick out Qatar from Eritrea. The Saudis and UAE combined pressure and threats made Eritrea to make a complete 180 degree turn in couple of months. SFG should find a way to calm down this issue and fast. Every day spent on this weakens the unity of purose and unity of action. Ethiopia is in the same boat as Somalia, and Sudan, but politicians do not even mention let alone to make it a do or die issue.
  9. Flights resume as authority resolves problem with air traffic controllers Addis Ababa, April 17, 2018 (FBC) –The problems occurred with air traffic controllers which led to temporary disruption of international flights have been solved, said the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA). ECAA Director-General Colonel Wosenyeleh Hunegnaw told FBC that flights have been started as per scheduled after delay that lasted for an hour. Ethiopian has resumed its regular flights to various destinations.
  10. The problem is that Puntland was always ready to sacrifice for the country, but this went very fast and also without Puntlands participation. Was all done in Mogadishu and now has gone to a level even Mogadishu cannot handle. Normally every step should have been done with consultation. The fact that it was used in the Jawari-Khyre tussle made it branching to all sorts and directions. Hopefully the president can repair what can be repaired soon.
  11. That maybe true, but only to a degree. But the nation has to be nation of fairness as well. If someone is making money while the other is made to loose money, and the one making money is not sharing a penny, then it is not possible, and not fair to demand loyalty to the country. This file in my view has been totally mishandled and misused during the Khyre Jawari tussle. Some are trying to milk this cow until the cow dies. Mr. Farmaajo should move fast to calm the waters and normalize the relationship as much as possible, before another chapter of time wasting issues in parliament or government are started.
  12. Wouldn't it make sense to ask Mr. Farmaajo rather than a federal state president? I am afraid you are being a hipocrite here. On the one hand you do not want federal states to deal with foreign countries, which is correct and sensible, but on the other hand you want a federal state president to raise that money when the soldiers will be short of pay right now, immediately. He does not own a bank, he cannot gather the assembly and raise taxes, he cannot sign loans with foreign banks without having collateral of port, airport etc. The sensible thing to do is SFG to ask Turkey or Qatar to pay them.
  13. Journalists with a mission, other than reporting facts. They count as shut down by government for security or dictatorial reason even the shutdowns which all Ethiopians agree and accept. Even the demonstrators agree the shutdown that happens during week of national examinations.
  14. Which resource? Where is this resource? This is to be expected. Social Media activists and the likes of our galbeedi here are so disappointed that the new PM first visit was the Kilil. How dare and how weak can an Oromo be to first visit the Somali home to the Liyu. They have been and still are domonizing the Liyu even when the Liyu is not even in the Area. Why would a Liyu go to Moyale? The Liyu has been such a success, is being copied now. Afar and Oromo Kilils are establishing Liyu. It simply means special forces.
  15. Small advice. Don't fight in a hopeless way. Be positive, be confident in your interests. Identify your interests then its easy to classify and place each in the right place with the right weight. You remind me of Shiek Aweys, I don't know why, but every other word he uttered about Ethiopia was Tigray, even in Asmara/Eritrea where there is more Tigray than in Ethiopia. The Tigray have been defeated in Ethiopia, so now you can stand on your bed. Its a German saying keep celebrating.
  16. Strike leaves flights suspended in Ethiopian capital airport Source: Xinhua 2018-04-17 17:58:02 ADDIS ABABA, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Scores of flights in and out of the Ethiopia Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, one of Africa's busiest airports, have been suspended on Tuesday after air traffic controllers went on strike. Speaking to state broadcaster, Ethiopian Television (ETV), Colonel Wossenyeleh Hunegnaw, Director General of Ethiopia Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA), said the strike happened with a pretext to protest suspension of holiday bonus payment to air traffic controllers and allegations of corruption within ECAA. He further said the authority will take measures against striking staff and that the delay in flights will resume shortly. Industrial strikes are rare in Ethiopia, one of Africa's fast-growing economy, which also has the continent's largest successful state air carrier Ethiopian Airlines.
  17. On strike to fight for reduced vacation and other benefits. Sign of development. Or sign of politicized employees. Ethiopian Airlines is largest in Africa and among few world airlines that have latest aircraft from Airbus and Boeng. Ethiopian airline also manages or share owns a number of airlines in Africa.
  18. There is another competition affecting the government as well. Uganda and Egypt is fighting life and death situation in South Sudan. Opposite are Sudan, Kenya and Ethiopia. They do not war directly, but groups in South Sudan are proxies. The president is with Uganda and the rebels are with Sudan. That is perfect example of how not to deal with ones neighbors. This is visible in Somalia, the competition between Uganda and Kenya. But this UAE thing can be very destructive for Somalia, unless the SFG moves away from this issue and focuses on more importnat ones fast and soon, like yesterday.
  19. Absolutely no doubt. Even some regions will be now affected for nothing in return. You can ask people to sacrifice, but if the sacrifice has no return or there is other groups, not only not sacrificing, but benefitting it will leave bitter taste on people.
  20. This was expected. It remains to be seen now if government can withstand pressure from regions and businessmen and families where the rubber meets the road. The government needs to move on, the more time spent on this the more trouble.
  21. If Somalia and UAE are in dispute, your argument does not work. Even agreements done 1000 years ago all come to question. The worst part of this is the Americans will also have less co-operation with Puntland by way of UAE.
