Kuwait City - Inmates and guards at Kuwait's central jail asked for help from state and prison authorities to rid two cell blocks of what they believe to be ghosts, the al-Siyassa newspaper reported on Tuesday. The ghosts, some of which were said to be appearing at night with incomplete bodies and flying through the air, had been spotted within two cell blocks over the past fortnight, the paper cited one female prison guard in its front-page report. "It's now unbearable to work in the central jail, especially in Sections One and Two," because of the ghosts, the guard said. Requests sent to the prison's administration to bring in a Muslim religious figure to read the Quran - a traditional way to drive away alleged bad spirits - have been rejected, she said, nothing that administrators called the ghosts "just illusions". "How can they be described as illusions if 26 guards have already seen them?" the guard asked. Some guards had threatened to quit over the matter, she added. The guard appealed to Interior Minister Sheikh Nawaf al-Sabah to intervene in the problem by allowing recordings of Quranic verses to be played in the cell blocks at night in an effort to exorcise the apparitions. Rabat - Morocco recalled its ambassador to South Africa on Wednesday after Pretoria formally recognised the pro-independence government in the annexed Moroccan territory of Western Sahara. Officials in Rabat said the ambassador was recalled for consultations after what they called South Africa's "inopportune" decision to establish diplomatic ties with the self-proclaimed Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic. South Africa, a traditional backer of independence for the Western Sahara from Morocco, said its decision on Wednesday was in line with "the principles and objectives enshrined in the African Union and United Nations Charters". But Rabat condemned the decision as "partial, surprising and inopportune", and voiced its "disappointment with the new foreign policy of the South African government," in a statement issued by the Moroccan foreign ministry. 'Has no claim to sovereignty' The ministry was quoted by Map news agency as saying that "South African authorities are adopting a position that runs counter to international trends". "This decision undermines the efforts of the United Nations to find a just, realistic solution that is acceptable to all the parties in this conflict," it added. Rabat charged that Pretoria's decision failed to take into account the "thousands of real Saharawis, firmly attached to their Moroccan identities". "Invoking the right to self-determination, South African authorities... are recognising a so-called state that has no claim to sovereignty, undermining the will of the populations concerned," it charged. Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma earlier expressed hope there be no diplomatic "fall-out" from Rabat, adding that South Africa had explained its decision to the Moroccan government. Morocco annexed the Western Sahara region in 1975, triggering a dispute with Algeria which backed the Polisario Front movement seeking independence for the territory bordering the Atlantic between Mauritania and Morocco. Madras - Police in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu are hunting a man who married his seven-year-old niece to avenge her father's alleged role in breaking up his first marriage, police said on Thursday. The "marriage" between 35-year-old farm-hand Vijayarajan and his niece Amuthamani, took place several months ago, said A Amalraj, superintendent of police in Theni village, about 500 kilometres from the Tamil Nadu state capital Madras. "But we came to know about this only on Tuesday. We have registered a case of child marriage under some relevant sections of the penal code," Amalraj said. Indian law sets 18 as the minimum age for a woman to marry and 21 for a man, but women's rights groups claim that about half of all marriages that take place in the country involve underage girls. Usually priests or marriage officers are penalised if they perform illegal weddings but most of the marriages go undetected. If force is involved, offenders may be jailed. Police said Vijayarajan caught Amuthamani - both only use one name - on her way to school and tied the "thali" (the sacred thread) round her neck to symbolise marriage. His motive was apparently to spite his brother-in-law - Amuthamani's father Ayyavoo - for allegedly engineering a split between him and his wife.
