Maybe this thread should be moved to Camel Milk? Do nomads agree with the article? We have had no say in the making of the contemporary world — modern "civilization" — and we are obliged to fit into it as best we can, often as "square pegs in round holes"; an uncomfortable position, and one that might be said to emasculate us, robbing us of that self-confidence which I suggested, in my first talk, is of such profound importance.

Salams, "People in Africa and Asia admire our scientific and technical prowess, but at the same time they are frightened by a form of rationality which totally excludes God from man's vision, as if this were the highest form of reason," he said. They sensed a "contempt for God" in Western societies and "a cynicism that considers mockery of the sacred to be an exercise of freedom and hold up utility as the supreme moral criterion for the future of scientific research ," he said. It is ever so easy to be a cynic and ride the wave of cynicism, when hoter water runs all day and night, the bellys are full and you can communicate with your grandparents via Aol/Msn (No need to live near them or pay them visits . I recall seeing a picture of the somali coastline and how vast the ocean is. It was a scary image (from an airle view) because it made me realize how tiny Bani Adam is. Just a drop in the ocean, littereally-that is our size. Yet, we have the Kibir/Pride to question HEAVEN and limit GOD to our own RELATIVE, limited, understanding. Its the same story that played out in Janna, when Iblis/devil said that he was created from Fire and Adam was created from Clay. Thereby, an admission of self-pride and CONTEMPT of GOD. As if IBLIS/THE DEVIL, knew better then GOD about CREATION. Subhanallah!!! Well the same play, plays over and over again in Bani-Adam, in the children of Adam/humans. It is very hard to be humble and 'GOD FEARING' in an Age and TIME, wherein FOOD can be ordered over the food or net-in an instant. No appreciation of anything and no humility or gratitude shown, unless it involves a PAYCHEQUE. There is Wisdom in what the Pope says. Fi Amanillah

Salamun caliykum waalalyal It is said by some people, that Jalaludin ar-Rumi (what a name! )'s Mathnawi was a tafsir/taweel(quranic commentary/exegsis). For some strange reason, I think that the arabic version would be good to have because the English translations are almost always WATERED DOWN. FI Amanillah

A red blooded man can only be platonic friend with a lady if he finds her hedious and not HOT. That is the truth hun. Ya Damn skippy... Silent Sistah, you either a very fine Xalimoo or you are hedious! I doubt that it is the latter because otherwise, your name would have not have been Silent Sistah. Usually, from experience, the 'hedious' ones have to talk a whole lot, to sell themselves as friends.

On The LOW, a trend thats becoming common amongst OLDER Somali girls.
Khayr replied to OneManGang's topic in General
I think its because they don't want people pestering them about REALITY. They don't want people asking them WHEN they will get married? They don't want people reminding them that they are becoming 'LOSERS' by waiting for the 'RIGHT MOMENT'. Also, some of these girls who have reached that age, have dun done it ALL (Balaq Balaq ) and so still have this fantasy that they 'Precious Xalimoos'. Ok Nuff said for now. -
I was deeply impressed by something which Dr. Israr Ahmad wrote in his booklet entitled Islamic Renaissance: The Real Task Ahead. I want to quote that paragraph because I think it should be impressed on the minds of all young Muslims and of all who are active in public affairs. "The domince of Western culture and philosophical thought," he wrote, "is so pervasive and universal that even the point of view of such people as are struggling against it in some countries turns out, on closer examination, to be itself greatly influenced by the West. Indeed, they are themselves to a great extent Western in their approach and method, and even in their purported ideology. They too think in terms of Western philosophy and ideology, with the result that they lose their impact and their efficacy in opposing it." Source Do you and I really think 'Western'? Why the fact that we communicate in Anglo/Euro domaninate and normative languages is proof of the above statement. Does that then makes us 'Split Personality Musilims' that are caught in a different time and world (The Dunya is the prison of the Mumin and the Jannah of the Kafir...). Dr. Israr Ahmad may recall that, when I spoke to the Islamic Medical Association of North America some eighteen months ago, I said that it made little difference whether I entitled my talk "Islam in the Modern World" or, alternatively, "Muslims in the West." I explained the reasons for this statement, and I hope Dr. Israr will not mind if I start by repeating what I said at that time. It seems to me that, today, with the exception of simple peasants and the few Bedus who still roam freely in the desert, all Muslims live "in the West." They live in the modern world, and that means a world built by the West from bricks fired in the factories of Western culture. Our wishful thinkers of whom we have, I believe, all too many, do not like to admit this. They try to make a sharp distinction between modernization and westernization, and this leads them to the claim — which seems to me absurd — that if the Muslims had not fallen asleep and "fallen behind" over many centuries, they would have constructed a world almost identical to the one that now surrounds us; the same worldly dynamism, the same science, the same technology. They are dreaming. Lions do not give birth to wolf cubs, and you are unlikely to pick mangos from a cherry tree. Certainly, change is inherent in history, and, had Islam remained to this day the dominant world force that it once was, the life of the Muslim in the 15th century Hijrah would have been very different to the life he lived in the 5th century, let alone in the lst. But he would still have lived within a setting, a framework, molded by the spirit of Islam and by the practical requirements of the religion. Change would have taken place within the bounds set by the Qur’an and the Sunnah. The Muslim would still have felt at home in his world. He is not and cannot be at home in the world as it is today. In the first place, the ground rules have been laid down in terms of beliefs and ideologies entirely alien to Islam. Take as only one example the Charter of the United Nations and the structure of International Law (in so far as such Law may be said to exist). The main provisions of that Charter may be acceptable to us in a general way, but this is coincidental. Not one paragraph, not even one sentence in any paragraph of the Charter is of Islamic origin or could be said to have been inspired by the Islamic ethos. The same, of course, is true of the conditions governing international trade and banking; it is true also of the educational system, especially at university level as it exists in almost every Muslim country. Source Is the author too harsh or spot on in his statements?

As years elapse, are you getting richer spiritually? Nur 'Each PERSON is his own mountain and the mountain that you are trying to climb is yourself' Busier in the dunyaa-a life of double shifts, working away from the family just to provide for them (the irony of it all!), hording up heaps of wealth in fear of poverty....etc. Hadith: “Value five things before five others come to pass: value youth before old age health before illness affluence before poverty leisure before becoming too busy and value life before death†(Narrated by Imam Tirmidhi). SubhanAllah, what a beautiful hadith that speaks to the pyschology of Bani Adam. With a few sentences, the Rasul (salallahu caliyhe wasilm) relates to us 5 things that Bani Adam should VALUE and Cherish. In these 5 things, the correlation is that they are all related in TIME and basic HUMAN DESIRES i.e. youth, life, health, wealth and Leisure For as the Ayat in sura Al ASR, indicates, As the passing of Time, Surely, Bani Adam/Mankind becomes in a state of loss, a state of DECLINE. The exception being those with IMAN/FAITH. Hadith: " The world os receeding away and the Hereafter is proceeding near, and for each one there are inhabitants. Therefor, be the inhabitants of the Hereafter and do not be the inhabitants for this world. Verily, there is action todfay and no account but there will be account tomorrow and no action" Narrated by Imam Bukhari You know the somali dua/saying "Illahi ommarikagga xaa kuudariyo" meaning May Allah give you a long life. When I think of that saying, I ask of myself-what does a long life bring you that a short life doesn't in your Journey towards Allah? Its a rhetorical question because the measure of a person's life from the Islamic view is qualitative. Meaning its not a long life that we should be supplicating for but a life of Hidaya/Guidance and that we pass away from this world to the next in a state of Taqwa and Iman. Fi Amanillah

In other words, a good marriage is associated with a higher income, a longer, healthier life and better-adjusted kids. It is a Social Status issue. Why else would same-sex marriages be a hot socio-political topic in some countries? If people were to be educated about the content of this article in classrooms, then a new process would begin. A process of 'desacralizing' the concept of the 'working women' otherwise known as 'Dual Income Households'.

Originally posted by NGONGE: Why ban it though? Would it not be better to regulate it? In a place with no government, high levels of unemployment and widespread poverty the last thing any ‘authority’ needs to do is to ban a trade or restrict business without providing an alternative. The businessmen that sell the charcoal and animals to the Gulf states will not suffer that much, they probably have enough capital to move their trade to another (more accommodating) part of Somalia, or even diversify into another sector. But what of him that cuts the trees, loads the trucks or hunts the animals? Where will he get his income? I agree with you that alternatives need to be established before such bans can be in place. It makes political sense but also in line with understanding human psychology and constituent needs. In the lifetime of the Rasul (salluhu caliyhe wasilm), alliances were forged with different tribes and even the jews of Medina because the alternatives would have left the Rasul (salluhu caliyhe wasilm) and his companions all alone and vulnerable. The point is that be politically sensitive and be aware of the condition (s) of the people that you rule over. Policies can be introduced gradual and in different stages. Political platforms are not all introduced and implemented in one year. Fi Amanillah

Originally posted by Shabanu: Dear Ivana: I love you. I’ve always loved you since the day you snuck into our yard and pooped into our garden. Even though my mother disagrees and threatens to hit you with a broomstick the next time you mess up her garden - I think you were indirectly telling us that you care and are capable of taking responsibility for your messes. I think that’s very grownup and considerate of you. A typical dog would’ve just left it there and ruined our day - but you! No, you special cat, you would cover it up for us to find and dispose of when we try to rake over the weeds. And no, I am not mad that I had to clean up the clogged cat poop on the rake edges. Ivana, I have to say though. I feel that you don’t appreciate me at all. I mean, I feed you, I snuggle with you, and when I run my hands down the length of your back, I can feel and hear the loud puuurrrs vibrating throughtout your whole body. But, why must I beg, cry and plead for your attention? After I feed you, instead of showing me gratitude, you cock your head and stare intently at me for a few minutes, your peircing green eyes looking through my eyes and deep down my soul. Finding nothing to interest you, you lay around pretending to sleep and all the while your mind is working feverishly figuring out where else to poop discretely and surprise us. Then you leave, without so much as a goodbye, and head over to your rightful home, your tail and ears straight in the air, dismissing me and my love. I man, is that even necessary? Why can't we part ways respectfully, instead of leaving me miserable and vindictive? I feel used, Ivana. Used and worthless like one of your old. chewed to death toy mice. It seems like you only want me to fulfill you physical needs - massage, food and a place to poop. I think we need to re-evaluate our relationship and work on the places that are lacking - as in the unreciprocated affection displayed by yours truly. How hard is is to come and lay on my lap with prompting, to rub your smooth head on my neck like you do your owners, to place your paws on my chest and hug me like a true friend would. Why do you manipulate me and abuse my affection? Ivana, I love you but if you don’t change your wandering ways, I would be forced to seek attention else where. Maybe even that fat cat that you despise for no other reason but that it loves rubbing it’s body on my legs. Yes…I do have options you see…so think carefully about the benefits in our relationship and whether or not it’s worth it to you to work on it or lose it…. Love, Shabanu Very Creative indeed!

Funny how we live in an age when we remember and cherish more Family Birthdays and Pay Days. Ask most muslims in the western Hempishere about the Isra and Miiraj and when it is or even what it is and their response will be in the negative. We hardly know and celeberate the Islamic Calendar and many islamic events. The Contemperary Muslim is like a FLOWER without the Scent. SubhanAllah! How can we ever expect our children to be decent muslims, when they don't know their Islamic History and when it is not celeberated and brought to life? All we have left is just Ritualism for our children. Fi Amanillah

If that dude took the same airplane as me, I would as quickly be getting off and taking the next plane, or sitting as far away from him as possible and having my eyes open at all times, and this is coming from a fellow muslim, who is a minority nevertheless. I'm sorry to say, but the situation I described to you is just the same. Everytime a black man walked out late @night, it was either him selling drugs or robbing someone, if cops saw him, hell will break loose. Another example I want to point out is, when I use to go to stores, sales reps would be running from whatever part of the store they were@, and coming towards me and if they weren't asking me what I wanted to buy, they be following me until I leave their store, that means, there was the profile of black pple being thiefs at the time(and atleast each one of u, or one of 2 pple in this forum must have experienced similar cases at one point or another), now all arabs with lengthy gar fit the terrorist profile, I didn't cry then, why should arabs or anyone who has the gardheer cry eitheR? Times have changed, but not for arabs or gardheer's all around, this is just the beginning, and that is the truth I speak off. There is some truth in what you are saying that reflects people's present day CNN/SKYNEWSdriven biases. However, just because people want to shiidh on you, don't mean you gotta accept that shiidh and internalize and normalize it. We accept that their exists Implicit and covert racism but we don't and shouldn't accept Explicit Racism. i.e. Muslim line and a non-muslim line at the Grocery store, mall etc. We don't have to tolerate Racial Profiling and this new two tier system lead by Bush and Blair.

Originally posted by Khalaf: quote:Originally posted by Northerner: Can one perform congregational prayers with Shias? Simple answer, NO. Its ok to pray with shias in the masjid but not behind a shia Imam. And Allah knows best. What is the proof that you can not pray behind someone that is Shia MUSLIM? If you are giving them the label that they are Shia MUSLIM (emphasize on the word MUSLIM), then you share similiar Pillars of Islam and the Shahadah. So Northerner, let me get this, It is ok for Shias to pray behind Sunnis but not for Sunnis to pray behind Shia?

Salams, Are these members active participants in SOL? Have they made a post in the last little month? Before the summer? Winter? Last year? (when was the last time they posted on SOL?) SOL has had some good personalities, especially when it was smaller in population and people knew each other better. I don't know though of new members and their ability to establish ties, find a mate on SOL. There are just too many names and NAME CHANGES on here nowadays for that too happen.
