Originally posted by Opinionated: Bashi, You can have your own opinions. But it is people who are constantly putting words in my mouth and taking my posts out of context. That is mainly why I post more than twice in any thread. My posts are not confrontational but merely my input into the topic. Sorry it is not to your liking but I am here to just voice me. I rather not have people put words in my mouth. Exactly where am I paranoid in this post? because I said we have few bad seeds that need to be dealt with in our community? When I say community I am talkinga bout the greater muslim community . It was underdog I believe that said things along the lines of tapping phone lines and some BS like that. This is what I do not appreciate from this forum. People who have different ideas or bring different opinions to the table are often treated as outcasts(for lack of a better word) . All I said was..we need to deal with issues within our community.. all you have to do is debate THAT issue . Trust me brother, I ain't mad....just annoyed at people nitpicking my posts and deforming what I say constantly and consistently! (case and point: underdog claiming that I am a homosexual at another post) Opinionated You too can have your opinion. Don’t be sorry...it shouldn’t be to my liking or any other nomad for that matter as you have just stated. This is merely misunderstanding between us (I would like to think so). It is either that my reading comprehension is not up to par or you have difficulty in conveying your thoughts clearly and unequivocally. Putting words in your mouth is unmanly and I don’t endorse that type of tactics. Drawing sufficient conclusion from insufficient premises (your posts) is a fair game, however. Your posts (some) annoy me. The positions you have taken post after post are strange and unusual. This is a personal opinion. I read the “bad seeds that need to be dealt with in our community” differently...it reminds me Ashcroft and his Big Brother apparatus’s line of reasoning. I thought them as victims not as “terrorist”. One important point that should be obvious to you is the function of the forum. What we post on the net is open for nitpicking, dissection and refutation. If you interpret that as targeting or confrontational is your call...in my book they qualify as disagreement and those who complain about that are paranoid to me as they assume there is sinister plot agaisnt them. I hope I’m clear this time around because I don’t want another tit for tat one along these line every time I post an input that disagrees with your input.

Big brother is watching us...now government intrusion into our lives has been justified. Targeting and profiling certain nationalities are given the green light under the “Patriotic Act” to prevent foreign terrorist to carry out sinister operations against America. Fair I say. Yet the only known terrorist equipped with WMD who attempted to carry out sinister plots against America were white, Christian, ultra supremacy groups in Texas! I have heard it on the TV - CSPAN to be specific. Two guys are in prison. No one is profiling them! I smell fish in this potatoes soup they cooking for us. I’m a Muslin and Black. I know my rights and I now the pitfalls. I’m a God-fearing, law abiding citizen and yet I’m scared as a hell from the Big brother for they know no bounds. This is strange world and it is hard to get by or make sense out of some events. Abide the law, be vigilant, do not engage any shady business and above all know your rights...and hopefully you will be fine. Opinionated, Don’t get me started plz! You got thin skin and you are excessively paranoid. You don’t hesitate (and rightly so) to share your take on matters of larger concern in this Somali forum. Yet, when others with opposing views put their two cents or those who have tendency to call things what they really are(how they come off on screen) question u, they do so because they are either following you or targeting you or they are Somalis - that deformed people u know! who make a living to bother u. Talk about paranoia! Opinions vary and we really really do have different world outlook...it is inevitable to have opposing views. Don't get mad.

The resolution in this border dispute will strengthen the hands of thsoe who are resisting this scheme. Perhaps Lander and his likes enjoy 'my folks are better, braver...got muscle' kind of talk...but Siilaanyo and Buurmadoow failed to see what good does a war in the region do for the recognition or their constituents. If we make it difficult for them to carry out this concocted sinister scheme...local politics will soon be on the table and that's where the real game come into play. Don't be naive sxb and don't buy the distractions a la "wag the dog" style. I understand you have difficult in acknowledging Garowe's political shrewdness but that is the beside the point...what at stake here is not who dances what tune (that remains to be seen in the near future) but the lives of many innocent Muslim Somalis. U see my friend there are real political differences in Hargeisa. Who says it, whether me or one of your trustworthy 'duriyada' is irrelevant. This game has been in play for a quite some time...u are just too blind to see it.

Samurai, Demilitarize the zone for the good of the residents there. I repeat this again and I dare to say we should take the initiative by recalling Af-gaduud back to his barracks. This is not a unilateral disarmament but a shrewd political move that will toss a ball between Siilaanyo and front line residents including Buurmadow on one hand and Riyale handlers on the other hand in yet another football rematch political play in Hargeisa. You do that and these will happen: a) It will deflate Mr. Ade’s and his like’s political capital as the “Issimo” will capitalize this move and solve few long-standing issues among their constituent. b) Punland will not lose face by doing that as Sool will still be an integral part of Puntland State under control of its loyal “Issimo” and Somaliland don’t have to swallow its pride because they “kicked” Af-gaduud out of the area. c) Both sides save the needed resources that now earmarked for a disastrous conflict. My suggestions are for just to buy time not to solve the fundamental differences between the two administrations on the question of border demarcation and the sacredness of the territorial integrity of the Somalia that once existed. As of now we all should focus on maintaining the peace. I’m of the opinion that it is easy to achieve it if the leaders care. They can solve it without addressing the ultimate question. I don’t see any other way of saving us to go to war. There u have it pal - my thoughts on how to avert an unwinnable war.

The infantrymen have spent months training with Ethiopian troops and hope to eventually conduct joint exercises and border patrol operations . The civil affairs unit repairs clinics and schools as well as provides medical and veterinarian assistance to Muslims in rural areas, where terrorists may be recruiting new members by spreading anti-American messages . There u have it! Folks of the land of the free and the home of the brave should help, you would think, the poor residents in the occupied West Somalia attain their freedom instead they are helping Ethiopians to defeat the freedom fighters by implementing this neo-colonization tactic disguised as the war on terror. When they flee from these Habashi and take refuge in Hargeisa, Hargeisa admin will not only detain them but it will also hand them back to Zenawi so they can be tortured in the Ethiopian style. Col. Abdullahi Yusuf will go out his way to declare that he is the only man that can root out the terrorist and at times he had declared himself to have material evidence of the whereabouts of the terrorist implicating his own people.... Ethiopia in turn files reports of the existence of terrorist groups and cites Puntland and Somaliland and their activities against these cells in their midst to support its claim. All of these transgressions have been committed in the name of political expediency. What a disgrace! Has anyone seen ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ the movie? Get it from your local library and see the parallels of history in replay only this time Somalis not Arabs are the victims of grand imperial design. Ciil oo wey!

How about this one: "He lied. They died."

Samurai, My suggestions for quick resolution: 1. Demilitarize the zone for the time being. 2. Restore the institutional capacity of the elders so they can manage dificulties with this magnitude. As of now that is not the case. 3. Honor the "isimo's" decisions and requests - requests that are inline with the grassroots wishes which happen to be peace. I'm of the opinion that if we do these, the sane folks of both sides will have time to sit back and see where their real interests lie.

Originally posted by Khayr: WHAT SATISFIES HUMANS THE MOST? WHAT CAN SATISFY US AS HUMANS? Keep in mind my orginal line of questioning What determines Values in our lives??? Kheyr, This is a good one sxb. I’m inclined to say that the inner peace we feel deep down in our hearts determines the value in our lives - the emphasis is ‘in our lives’. I haven’t thought about the subject much but let me fumble with this one. The hat analogy you alluded to is a case in point. Under the demand and supplies economics, the commodity in short supplies will have more value relative to other commodities in abundant supplies. That (market conditions and laws that govern it) is not the indicators that we use to measure the value of our lives. In other words, the quality of our life is a function of the abstract notions such as happiness, freedom, equality, security, sanity, health, and stability. Yet, wealth (money) can only improve and enhance the quality of these social indicators. You see, while the demand and supplies are active variables of the value equation in any given market setting, the constants (or lack of it), which operate entirely on different assumptions, are what guide the consumers - us, the humans. These constants are not derivatives whose values are dependent on variables that fluctuate in the market condition under the control of the upper class (ever heard dumping commodity, price gauging, or monopoly - think HMO’s and the Federal Reserve and how they effect our lives!). However, they rather emanate from an understanding that sees life as a vehicle that follows a pre-ordained path decreed by Omniscient God. Satisfaction in the wisdom and justice in this decree makes all the difference. Adherents of this vision take solace in ‘Sabar’ when in trouble or when the quality of life is as bad as it can get. They do what they can (within the limits of revealed Truth) to improve their lives and ‘tawakal’ Allah whenever things seem beyond reach. In this paradigm, inner peace is the most valuable thing humans can attain in this life. Having inner peace will enhance the value and quality of our lives. Adherents of this paradigm would not buy the ‘naked’ sculpture of David to enhance the quality of their lives. It has no value to them. In the Western paradigm, everything is relative even the value in our lives. The purpose of live is survival. In the race of the ‘survival of the fittest’ and ‘struggle for existence’, the rules, the good and evil, the right and wrong are all relative. The paintings of Mona Lisa or the collections of Picasso or the white glove Michael Jackson wore in the debut of Billie Jean song have much more values (in terms of dollars) than hundred houses that can shelter many homeless folks. Because the top strata have a taste of the fine arts, they explain to us, the possession of these classic artworks enhances both the image and the quality of life, hence behaving that way is what the living large is all about. In pursuit of happiness, even eating the cereal that celebrity of the hour (who seem to make it and now live in the la Vita dolce) says they eat enhances the value in our lives! The Relativism, The Quantum theory, Heisenberg’s Indeterminate Doctrine, the Relativity Theory, and the Principle of Confusion all these drive the ‘no Truth or Falsehood’ idea to home; it all depends on the monitor’s point of view and the framework on which he is making the observation from. We already had our schooling and no contemplation is possible outside the ‘box’. The logic of science that used to offer two values is no longer valid. Relativism not only negates the Newtonian determinism but it introduces a new trilateral logic that has a median value of ‘indeterminism’. Popular culture and scientific literature converged and embraced the relativism it seems - what a force to reckon with! If consumption is what drives the development; and the pursuit of happiness (key ingredient of the quality of life a la western mode) is what drives the consumption itself then the progress failed to cure the most of the humans’ spiritual and psychological ailments. Not only that the progress that supposed to enhance the quality of our lives has introduced new incurable and dangerous ailments but also the cost of the progress (pollution) is downplayed. Under relativism trilateral logic, the cost of human progress in the pursuit of happiness is relative and 'indeterminate'. Hope that makes sense.

Shaqsii thank u brother for keeping the bulletin going. Originally posted by Zaylici: Thus my good freind Bashi, you have mistaken to think that these high moral grounds are unquesionble, there are as shown by my argument and the argument of the ancient philosophers questionble and in some case not good to be just Zaylici, Sxb wlc back and thank u as well for taking the trouble of reading Sayyed Abu Al’a Al-Mawduudi’s superb article. It was not mine to begin with. May Allah grant him the Janah for he clarified many many issues for my feeble mind. Now let me see, if I’m not mistaken you are saying that you don’t agree with him on this one. That is fine for he is a fallible man. I don’t think, however, you, and the argument of ancient sages you seem to be reading, have made the case for refuting what the author had said about this issue. The author is making subtle but important argument that can be summarized: We humans have innate ability to distinguish between ‘good’ and ‘evil’. I agree with you sxb that nowadays good people are having hard times to do what's right and good. You are also right that there are so many innocent subjects (victims) under tyrannical rule -be Islamic imitators rulers or other rulers. Their existence is not what the author is disputing. He is rather saying that all men (women) have a tendency to despise and condemn the rulers who are unjust, lie to, and oppress their loyal subjects. Likewise, humans have inclination to like just rulers. The piece makes the assertion that the ‘fidhra’ is inline with the revealed Truth. To steal from 80 years old childless woman her retirement for the first time of one’s (thief) life, for instance, one has to struggle for finding a justification for his consciousness (inborn moral standard) would not allow him to do without it. Finally Zaylici sxb the beauty of the piece is not just another polemic...he is getting his ‘daleel’ from the ultimate sources Quran not from Greek philosophers. And what better way to rest a case than this: “Hence in the terminology of the Quran good is called maruf (a well-known thing) and evil munkar (an unknown thing); that is to say, good is known to be desirable and evil is known not to commend itself in any way. As the Quran says: God has revealed to human nature the consciousness and cognition of good and evil. (al-Shams 91:8)”

^The lion-teaser is right Ali-dhuux, Salaan Carrabeey, and Inna Abdille Hassan are indisputable figures in the field of poetry. The clannish nature of these poems aside, 'Guba' is a poetic narrative of a tribal war. It is an oral history of nomadic community consisted of several clans struggling for existence in an arid grazing fields. The beauty of their expression, their great imaginative power, and the facility in language in which they expressed defeat, pride, glory and revenge in the form of allegory is fascinating. It is revolting, however, when one considers their disregard of justice in the light of nomadic dictum: “nin la diley nin baa loo dilaa wa dekanadiisii e.” A 21 yr old, the legend has it, born when Ali-dhuux set this whole drama in motion, had closed it with a poem that all good old poets couldn't dispute its validity and eloquence. I find this sonnet beautiful: the young poet recites a description of the victim Ina-Camey to his kinfolk. He paints a picture of him for the audience to instigate a violent reaction…it seems the victim was tall, respectful, generous, brave, and articulate murdered in cold-blood for no reason. This is a good read as it is written by a group of Somalis who actually went there. It is an old report and a lot have changed since...nevertheless it has some relevence. The role of Islam is acknowledged in this one...awesome ----------------------------------------------- Removing Barricades in Somalia. Somalia and the Somali people are an enigma to much of the world. How can the Somalis have journeyed to the eve of the 21st century and have no modern state “no laws, no government, no courts, no taxes, no social services, no trash collection, no public schools, no post office, no official currency, no means to settle defaulted business contracts, no public health system, and no police? Do they exist, as Robert Kap lan's ”The Coming Anarchy’ would have us believe, in the depths of anarchy or even nihilism. There are many opinions about Somali identity. Our 1997 fact-finding mission heard them all. Read on.... Enabling conditions upon which sound governance for Somalia can be built include: 1. Local autonomy. A spirit of local autonomy pervades Somali society and ought to be enhanced and formalized. 2. Powersharing. People seek broad-based powersharing both as an echo of the past and as a key to a more participatory future. External groups should join with local communities to reinforce quests for powersharing. 3. Decentralization. People favor decentralization and devolution of power. Many examples have already emerged in local settings. These models should be examined for possible adaptations to other situations. 4. Role of women. Women are playing an increasingly prominent role in Somali civil society. These initiatives have won respect among men and women alike and offer a means to build bridges between hostile clan groups. Women÷s groups require special support and consideration for any lasting peace. 5. Islam. An Islamic revival is evident. It reflects core values, based on Somali tradition rather than on the fundamentalist political forms seen elsewhere in the Middle East. Somalia÷s Islamic revival promises to strengthen institutions of civil society and should be reinforced. 6. Market economy. A free and unregulated market economy has emerged and its growth should be encouraged. 7. Local adaptation. Somalis have been ingenious at adapting external technologies and management systems to meet needs at local levels. The spirit of innovation and creativity ought to be encouraged at regional and national levels as well. 8. Traditional institutions. Somali culture is rich in traditional institutions evidenced in systems of land management, agricultural and grazing systems, conflict mediation, legal adjudication, and many related functions. These traditional practices are part of the support system needed to make any new settlement effective and sustainable. 9. Free press. Somalis have a tradition of speaking frankly on any issue. At present, several informal newspapers, mostly in Mogadishu, present various perspectives on the current situation. Many of these views are highly critical of established political authority. Free speech and open debate need to continue if there is to be a lasting peace. 10. Regional links. Relations with neighboring states are improving and need to be nurtured. Read on....

What an inconvenience! Manji seems to run an obstacle that erects a wall between her worldly desires and the kind of social conformity dictated by divine rules. As Stephen Schwartz put it, she “seems to want a religion without rules”. As there is no such thing as religion without rules, she has an idea: Islam needs to be reformed to her liking. After all, Martin Luther successfully spearheaded a reformation movement and freed fellow faithful from the shackles of papacy. If she is successful, she will too bring about a progressive Muslim polity. Among other things, Prayer times will be tentative, Lesbians will be embraced as pious and prayers will be led by them, and she envisions Islamic state free and just as the current Israel state. These are paraphrased quotations from her book I haven’t read her book but the reviews are good enough for me to draw a conclusion. Manji is on to something and that’s not included the trouble with Islam. It is more on her and the trouble and the futility associated with reconciling the irreconcilables. Mohammed Elmasry, president of the Canadian Islamic Congress hit the nail on the head when he suggested that the book should be renamed ‘The Trouble with Irshad Manji’.
