Puntland to abandon the Mbagathi peace conference
miles-militis replied to Rokko's topic in Politics
Rahima – may I suggest you revisit the second last sentence at the end of the first paragraph of my previous post to suss out the answer to your question? If unproductive, please notify me. Having reflected on the debate vis-a-avis personal finger pointing that has unfortunately taken aground, a historical elucidation which I trust might put things into a simpler perspective at least for some, and to clarify things must be shared. You see, it must be understood that Somali nationalism is about myths, anti-colonials resistance, and concord amongst Somali speaking peoples. Firstly, Somali nationalism is about a myth that pioneers of the nationalist movement in the 40s and 50s had to create at a time when a common denominator bringing together Somalis in the Horn was desperately required, and as such the notion of Somali nationalism had been perfected against grave constraints, bigger of which being clan fidelity. It arguably began in small pockets primarily in major cities on the coasts reaching the Madrasah (the single most assembling grounds where youngsters could easily be influenced instilling the notion of nationalism), and gained its highest momentum with the movement of the late Sayid Mohamed A Hassan and his followers borrowing esteem from the hunger that was strife then for a cohesive, singular voice and force transcending clan allegiance- tribal inter-dependability was then at the thrust of the Somali persona and psyche prior to the nationalist movement. The myth, unfortunately has been subdued at the start of the rushed silencing of the organised rebel movements of the 70s and 80s. Alas, clan instead took the centre stage of Somali political discourse. An alternative mythical might that could take its place as of yet has not been hatched. Secondly, Somali nationalism is about the anti-colonialist resistance movement and refusal to accept colonial legacy, and mêlée against occupation of Somali inhabited territories. The resistance argued to have matured rather swiftly without soaking the nationalistic fibre of the Somali consciousness lost its impetus at the eve of independence as the mythical notion of nationalism had evaporated. With the fascist force out of the equation, domestic rivalry of clan influence usurped the spirit of the once stealth resistance, thereby precipitating the fall of the national institutions along with the mythical sentiment. And finally, Somali nationalism is about striving towards the unity of Somali inhabited territories. With two of the Somali territories under occupation with perceptibly underrepresented and under privileged peoples, one existing as a separate entity barely surviving subsequent to end of the cold war, and the Somali republic that is no longer, new formulae not necessarily in search of recapturing the ancient sentiment, but interpretative of contemporary nationalist feeling ought to be explored. All three unfortunately had been hit hard, some perhaps more than the others. Furthermore, one could observe the mythical Somali sentiment being shunned by sections of the Somali people, yet noticeable, incomprehensibly if you will, is the rationale put forth to justify such linear proclivity. For instance, the mere mention of Sayid Mohamed A Hassan sends sheer infuriation in some corners whilst the successive Somali governments are wrongly identified and associated with clans, thereby abhorred to say the least. Sadly, clans who were at the cornerstone of the Somali government in the 70s and 80s are now criminally branding it as a tribal regime so as to strip themselves of any wrongdoing, and thusly vilifying some for deeds none other than their own. The colonial legacy is embraced and considered the benchmark that must shape the future of Somalia in some corners. Any mention of nationalism or Somali unity is met with emotive and ferocious assault void of logic al rationale. And in some circles, the whole notion is almost wholly abandoned. Lessons learnt yet regrettably yet to be exploited for the good of the nation include: - That no country or nation could survive by itself on hand-outs, loans or financial guarantees when resources to lien, if need be, are scarce, in return for territorial access as perhaps countries used to do at height of the cold war era, - That no single group can claim ownership of Somali nationalism, rather it is a symbol identifiable with the nations, and by all, warts and all, - That Somali history , warts and all, could not be reinvented albeit it might disfavour a specific group’s political orientations, or preference, - Clan does not constitute a nation, and defiance of the popular belief, political or otherwise could hardly be abdicated however rapaciously re-enveloped, - The raw emotions of the general public could not be impregnated with successive intellectual denigration of no substance, - Rationale rather than emotions should take charge of the political discourse, Here is where intellectuals failed to formulate directive resolve, if not scholastic decree, verbalising prevalent political conditions whilst articulating the discourse. The fact that some in their dismal tribulations seem to be stuck in the 1990s at the height of the Somali civil war when reason had been replaced with madness and everyone was branded as “tribalist” –not even the honourable gentlemen Adam Ade, Abdirazak H Hussein to name a couple were not spared, further debilitates the debate. Here, now we seem to be revisiting that era, this time by none other than the hordes that hit puberty thereafter, with the children of the 90s tagging along. And as unfortunate as that is, generationX, most and not all, wired if not stoned, is by far the least bit acquainted with the Somali history, nor its politics, contemporary or otherwise. More tragically, the application of the term “tribalist” is deemed contrary to popular wisdom the last solace and the decider of the debate. Not realising that the mere branding of one as being “tribalist” is no revelation in view of the fact that the whole nation along with its institutions and national symbols had been annihilated on the basis of “tribal” vengeance. One would have thought, by now the discussion would have moved along, and around “what now” in realisation of the cultural mix and the basis of the Somali problem, rather than “finger pointing” after a decade or so. How wretchedly and appalling! "So what" is all one has to offer in response to such drivel. Yet the accuser, only if smart enough, will have learnt that what might have appeared the winning formulae, and a revelation at the start, is longer, and is not new to the accused. However, as the legendary Rumpole would have it after lengthy defence rounds at the old Bailey - be as it might, take the dialogue wherever one might, but realise that nationalism is not something one orders from the catalogue, or the nearest high street department store, and as such questioning one’s nationalism is nothing short of infantile and by far the most ridiculous utterance one could possibly make. -

Gediid – Very mature indeed! Perhaps two can ride that horse - by calling me a hater and tribalist, I guess you did not think I could reach for the filthy shovel myself. Then again, I did not drink from the same well, did I? Now that you have found the magic atlas of accusing everyone whose paths you cross - a hater and a tribalist (god forbid a puritan like you would not be indicted of that), which I reckon is a becoming in itself for you, why not move from that desolate corner you have isolated yourself in, and tell us what brought about the collapse of the Somali state? Was it religion? Was it cultural clash? Was it economic war? What was it? I was hoping you would prove a worthy adversary, but all that I get is, you are this, you are that. How disappointing! Best of luck mate, and enjoy the weekend! Lander – A while back if not mistaken I recall suggesting that you might want to consider staying on the sideline for a while until .....? Or did that miss you by a mile? -

Nasir – It is a very tiring business to keep wiping your ears mate, and feeding you info. Either stay with the discourse, or stay at school. I know it would be too much for asking, but were you not told Dhilod was stripped of his ministerial post some six months ‘fore his departure having crossed swords with inaHashi, thus his being a minister with a portfolio? -

The irony in all of this is that the likes of Gediid and Qudhac, whose whole rationale and basis of seceding from Somalia is based on tribalism, have the audacity to point fingers accusing others of being tribalists. The same people, who had gone as far as denying of not even being Somalis all on the basis of tribalism, are here now spewing smut from the left corner. I suppose it is a case of spitting ‘fore you are spat on! -

Gediid – Besides the juvenile mantra, do you care to dig deeper and perhaps challenge the intellect? And what is it that is going for western Somaliland, or any other that is not going for Puntland? Care to strike an anomaly, or better yet have an Einstein moment laddy? -

So the colonels and generals crossing the floor do not matter, but a minister without a portfolio makes the headlines for weeks. Wonder why? Only in Hargeisa could something like than crunch the thirst! Angel dear – be careful what you say as you never know whom is being floored inadvertently. I know you’re a Burcawi, and are not familiar with the local puns in Hargesia in your applications of the tem “PUQ”. You might think you have netted a winning goal, but it is an own goal. It is a term those in Dumbulukh are rather fond of it, and do not like to be abused. Surely, you would not want to get on the bad side of your heroine, the lady luck (Edna), or the maverick liberator inaWarabe. That would not only get you stranded in stingy cell with Boqor Burmadow; indeed you might find the sensation from the whiplash too daunting a task to bear henceforth. You see, you never thought of that, did you cassy? The things I do for you! -

Rahima - It is very simple my dear. Allow me, perhaps I did not quite grasp the gist of your meaning, or perhaps you are viewing things from a rather aberrant perspective. Either way, Puntland along with people of Southwest (RRA) embrace a political principle (are know to have been since pre-independence) which neither camps in Somaliland (western regions) and Mogadishu (this excludes self-administering regions i.e. Hiran & Shabele) are interested in at least for the time being. Western Somaliland is keen on the idea of separate nation, thus is the least bit interested in a Somali government unless with an equal share with the Italian Somaliland on the pre-1960 colonial status. Mogadishu faction heads could not care less, and find the present state far more suiting to their needs, hence seemingly favour NOT a government in any shape or form. Therefore, the question comes, what is one to do, but to engage both camps, Thusly, appearing antagonists to both camps. This does not assume PL & SW to have, or to be, a panacea, nor the redeemer of the Somali predicament; however, it rather suggests that the ratified formula is by far the most admirable, if not creditable, all things being equal. That being said, they are left with two options: Abandon ship tossing the Somali nationalist ideology in the Indian Ocean. Or carry the torch of nationalism thereby engaging both camps. The latter, and quite rightly so seems to have been adopted along with monumental detriment to their respective leadership and natives, political or otherwise, and with it comes a widespread notion, albeit infelicitous, that PL in particular barely has the interest of Somalia at heart, but is simply pursuing own artifice. An expected reaction, one might argue considering the political erratum of the past, unsolicited social responsibility along with perished human capital, human tragedies of the civil war, and ensuing statelessness in the country. Yet, the said notion fails to lend itself cogent ascendancy once current state of affairs is being observed. Flipping the coin one more time, this would not have been an issue had Puntland were to pursue secessionist political ideologies by declaring itself as a separate nation thereby abandoning the Somali nationalist sentiment. It, consequently transpires to the less informed observer that people of Puntland are ingenious assailants. Back to your original question then, would you rather Puntland abandon ship, and let it sink, in other words, embrace separatism as an acceptable resolve, and anarchy as a permanent state? Or at least make an effort? More often than not, and on such axiom, animus come the libellous retort from either camp as inherent in the discussion. Now sis, you tell me what one is to do? What was the old maxim “Haddii la Hadlana Waa Af Salax Ku Dheg, Haddii La Aamusana …..” -
Supermodel author, activist attacked by stalker in Vienna, police say WILLIAM J. KOLE, Associated Press Writer Wednesday, March 10, 2004 (03-10) 12:52 PST VIENNA, Austria (AP) -- A stalker beat Somalia-born supermodel and bestselling author Waris Dirie in her Vienna apartment, and police on Wednesday arrested a 26-year-old Portuguese suspect. Dirie suffered minor injuries in Tuesday's attack, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Dirie could not be reached for comment, and her agent in New York did not immediately return a phone message. The attack occurred just a week after Dirie had moved from Britain into an apartment in Vienna, the Austrian state broadcaster ORF and the Vienna newspaper Kurier said. Dirie, a prominent model and a women's rights activist who has campaigned against the practice of female genital mutilation in some African countries, is the author of the bestselling autobiography "Desert Flower," and two sequels, "Desert Dawn" and "Nomad's Daughter." A former goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Population Fund, Dirie appeared in "The Living Daylights," a 1987 James Bond film. She has modeled in Chanel perfume ads and has appeared on numerous magazine covers. Harald Hofmayer, a Vienna police official, told the Austria Press Agency that the suspect, identified only as Paulo A., was under the illusion that he had a relationship with Dirie and had stalked her for the past six months. He showed up at her door on Tuesday, he said. "She was so frightened and in shock that she let him in," Hofmayer said. Dirie suffered minor injuries when her assailant struck her and threw her to the floor, police said. Hofmayer said the attacker left by a taxi, only to return later on foot and smash a ground-floor window to the building. He was arrested when neighbors called the police. The suspect was being detained but had not yet been charged, police said. The suspect met Dirie about six months ago, when his brother was doing some work at her previous residence in Britain, the police official said. He later broke into that home and stole items of her clothing, the official said. Dirie has spoken out frankly about being a victim of ritual genital mutilation at age 5 in her native Somalia. When her father, Dahire, arranged for her to marry an elderly man in exchange for five camels, she ran away from home. Just 13 years old, the skinny girl walked 300 miles across Somalia to the capital, Mogadishu. She moved to Britain, where an uncle served for four years as Somalia's ambassador, and was discovered by a photographer and hired as a model for Revlon, Inc. Bond girl attacked by stalker By This is London 11 March 2004 Former Bond girl-turnedhuman rights campaigner Waris Dirie has been attacked by a stalker who tracked her across Europe. The 40-year-old author was left shocked by the assault, which came a week after she and her seven-year-old son moved to Vienna from Wales. A 26-yearold Portuguese man is in custody. Ms Dirie starred in the 1987 Bond film The Living Daylights and now works for the United Nations as a campaigner for women's rights in her native Somalia. Police said the stalker, believed to be the brother of her former handyman in Cardiff, had been pursuing her for six months when he knocked on her door. She was so scared she let him in. The man ran off when she cried for help but was caught later by undercover officers who staked out the flat, waiting for his return. Ms Dirie wrote the best-seller, Desert Flower, about her life as one of 12 children born to desert nomads. At 13, she escaped being sold into marriage for five camels and fled to Britain, where she got a break as a model after being spotted in McDonald's. She later appeared alongside Naomi Campbell.

miles-militis replied to Qudhac's topic in Politics
Qudhac - Ever wondered how is it when someone is being detained in Puntland (does happen unjustly at times), charges are always in the vicinity of corruption, someone of authority sidestepping set guidelines, or breaching indigenous regulations, yet in our beloved Somaliland, as is the case in almost always, it comes down to “freedom of speech and movement” – people are being held indefinite, thrashed, given illogical sentences, or worse yet exiled. A citizen being exiled from his own country – how astounding! Then, it matters NOT the least bit, for our brethrens in Somaliland seem not only satisfied with the status quo, in fact some go so far as coming to the defence of what is deemed “the define meritocracy” May the lord resuscitate the raison d'être! More interestingly, the terms “bail and guarantor” are being practised in Puntland, yet in Somaliland, even Traditional Leaders suffer in squatty, stinky cells with relatives not allowed to visit. A slap of justice ala Somaliland, eh! Madaxda Hay'ada NPA Oo Damiin Lagu Sii Daayey Markii la weydiiyey Madaxa Hay'ada NPA mashaariicdaasi halka ay ku danbeeyeen in uu diiday in uu wax jawaab ah ka bxiyo su'aalahaasi la weydiiyey, sidaa daraadeed ayuu yidhi xeer ilaaliyuhu ayaan talaaban u qaadnay , annaga oo ilaalinayna hantida lagu soo qaadayo magaca shacabka ee la lun sanayo. Wuxuuna Xeer ilaaliyuhu Sheegay in uu ku sugnaan doono Xaruntooda , isla markaana aanu magaalada dibada uga bixi karin ilaa iyo inta ay dhamaanayaan baadhitaanka lagu hayo hawlahaasi . Link Questioning as to what might have been done with the funds and the status of the project – well that is something one would never hear about in Hargeisa. Could the head of the NGO be interrogated in connection with "accountability"? That cannot be, I see Qudhac et al shouting? In Hargeisa, (other cities are not in the equation for NGOs hardly travel beyond NasaHablod, thusly not even on the radar) this would not have even been an issue, why? Because, the practice of donor funds misappropriation is so awash, so common, no one could pluck up the courage to point fingers. If one was to do so, the finger pointing would go as high as the top man himself – so, a culture of “say not an iota lest sunk” is being exercised. Still lwish to dribble, old chap? -

PRESS STATEMENT – The Arrest and Illegal Detention of Boqor Osman Aw Mohamoud - Wednesday, March 10, 2004 at 20:27 We, the Diaspora community of Sool, Sanag and Ain, hereby condemn the illegal and politically motivated detention of Boqor Osman Aw Mohamoud by the self-proclaimed “Somaliland” administration (North West Somalia) in Hargeisa. Boqor Osman is a well respected traditional Somali leader known for spearheading the peaceful co-existence of Somali Communities and is identified by many as the champion of peace in Northern Somalia. We would like to inform the Somali Communities in Diaspora, Human Rights Organizations and the International Community at large, that the self-proclaimed “Somaliland” administration has committed a heinous crime and human rights violation by arresting a traditional leader who has worked hard to resolve conflicts, peacefully, in his own community as well as between other communities in the region. Moreover, "Somaliland" regional administration has turned deaf ears to the voices and wishes of the people they claim to represent, traditional elders and leaders, intellectuals and concerned individuals, to release Boqor Osman and use of alternative methods to solve the conflict between him and the administration. This has created an emerging additional tension to the region. Skirmishes have been reported, already, between the administration’s militias and Boqor Osman’s constituency in Dararaweine near Eil- Afwein, Sanaag region. Therefore, considering the foregoing, and to avoid creating unnecessary havoc, death and destruction in the region, we demand the unconditional release of Boqor Osman for him to continue his noble deeds and peaceful mediation between communities that he has successfully conducted and became famously known throughout the region. We further request the international community and human rights organizations to exert maximum pressure on the self proclaimed authorities in "Somaliland" for the immediate and unqualified release of Boqor Osman. Contact: • Dr. Hussein Suleiman Dhegaweyne lasdhooble@yahoo.com • Mohamoud Mohamed Ali “Cadami” mohamoudali@hotmail.com ............. "The case against Boqor Burmadow: Impertinence and Defamatory" Defence Counsel Hargeisa (AllPuntland) – Details of the case against the jailed traditional leader, Boqor Osman Aw Mohamoud “Burmadow” were released a couple of days ago by the Plaintiff's Solicitor for the first time since his arrest a few months ago in Hargeisa, Northwest Somalia (Somaliland). Published in one of the local newspapers in Hargeisa, Mr Roble Michael representing the Plaintiff challenged accusations levied against his client while slamming what he called “the heavy-handedness and excessive use of intensity with which the government deals in civil cases” The case against Boqor Burmadow according to the defence Counsel hinges upon two counts in reference to articles 208 and 220 cited “as were” from Somalia’s legal doctrine under the military regime of Mohamed Siyad Barre. a) Article 220 deals with “debauching the image of, offending or defaming the President” Under this article, the defence Counsel questions the legality, and under what conditions could a citizen be accused of defaming the character and image of the President. It is suggested that the case by the government in large proportion hinges on the provisions and stipulations of the above article. It is also argued that any law that attempts to muzzle, or penalize citizens for expressing adverse views, or portraying the President in bad light, is unconstitutional and undemocratic. It is noteworthy that Dahir Riyaale Kahin, Somaliland’s current President was a colonel in the notorious NSS (National Security Services) under the dictatorial regime of the former republic of Somalia, and is alleged to have committed crimes against humanity in Berbera between 1988-1990 – persecution, unlawful imprisonment and use of excessive force against innocent civilians who rioted against the then military regime. It was deemed criminal, under the then administration, and “a crime against the nation” to question the President, let alone portrays him in a negative light. b) Article 208 provides “raising fear in public when at war, and beguiling the Nation”. Mr Michael further argues, under this article that conditions under which “Somaliland” could be classified as being "in a time of war" could be construed under the constitution only by the Parliament and the House of Guurti [Traditional Leaders], and therefore is not solely at the government’s discretion to spin it unjustly in support of its case. The government here argues that Boqor Burmadow revealed sensitive information concerning Riyaale and his administration’s contributions, financial as well as military, to the political conflict in the neighbouring Puntland State, which Boqor Burmadow along with Sultan Abdisalam Saeed successfully mediated early last year. It was claimed at the time that Riyaale was against the mediation, and the fallout between Boqor Burmadow and Riyaale was conceived thereafter. And by giving interviews which technically criticised the government for abandoning diplomatic recommendations while opting for violent means to resolving the Sool, Sang & Ayn issue, Boqor Burmadow was accused of planting seeds of doubt and fear in the minds of the general public. The statement further illustrates the case against Boqor Burmadow in that it lists main points considered at the cornerstone of the Government's case. It highlights that the Plaintiff is alleged to have: a) Deliberately endangered the security of the nation by handing over weapons, ammunitions and explosives to the opposition forces of Gen. Adde Muse whose forces set up stations in El-Afweyn in western Sanag. Here, the statement establishes that the said weapons, ammunitions and explosives had been given to Gen. Adde and his militia by Somaliland government to prolong the conflict in Puntland State. It is argued, contrary to the allegations, that Boqor Burmadow indeed advised the government not to provide weapons, ammunitions and explosives to the opposing army of Gen. Adde, suggesting that once the two sides reached an agreement, they could turn around and use the weapons against Somaliland. The government on its part argues that Boqor Burmadow was ordered to retrieve the weapons subsequent to a reconciliatory agreement reached between the Puntland parties, and that he desisted, and on such grounds, the Plaintiff endangered the security of the nation. b) Advocated for a peaceful resolution to the conflict between Puntland and Somaliland over the disputed regions of Sool, Sanag & Ayn. The statement asserts as indicative of the documents and videos presented that the Plaintiff advocated for peaceful resolution to the conflict. “Before going to war in order to secure the borders, let us explore peaceful means” Burmadow advised in the interviews. “I could be of assistance in the negotiations. And we do not want the matter to be turn into a tribal war between clans inhabiting in Sool & Sanag [his ..... clan against and the ... of ... ]” he argued. It is alleged that Boqor Burmadow knowingly mislead the general public, divulged national secrecy and exploited the weaknesses of the people by going public with sensitive information and agreements between him and Riyaale. It is believed that the people of Northwest Somalia would not have sanctioned a war between the neighbouring regions had they known the facts over which their government was staging the war, yet the government in Hargeisa was, and it still is, determined to go to war despite all the odds being stacked against it. Defence Counsel points out that as a citizen Boqor Bumadow has every right to advocate for that, and for what he considers to be in the best interest of the nation, as many citizens share that view. And finally, the Plaintiff is accused of c) Disclosed terms of secret contracts and business dealings between an American firm, namely Red Sea and the Somaliland government. Boqor Burmadow is also accused of publicly speaking of secret contracts between Somaliland and the abovementioned US firm. The contract brokered by Ismai'l Omar Ghelle, the President of Djibouti is said to give the US firm fishing rights and land usage. The finer details of the agreement, and who are the benefactors, its monetary value, and ramifications of its dealings are no fully known. It is claimed that the firm will undertake a project which is said to connect the ports of Jibouti to Berbera to which Boqor Burmadow spoke against. The defence Counsel concludes in its statement by speaking against the misuse of authority and inherent nostalgic behaviour of militaristic rule and dictatorial systems of governance in curbing freedom of expression and civil liberties on the part of the government – the kind the military regime of Somalia was famous for. Judging from how the constitution is being abused and the rule of law distorted, he added the country is unfortunately manned by the remnants of the military regime and people of that generation. Unprecedented in the post-civil war Somali history where traditional leaders have taken a centre stage in assuming the position of government as well as that of peace brokers after the collapse of State institutions, the case of Boqor Burmadow is perceived as challenging the customary role of traditional elders and their leadership as there hardly is a law that specifically defines tasks they could, or could not presume. As disconcerting as the nature of the case is, the resolve on the part of the general public is admirable as violent uprising had not engulfed the region despite clashes resulting in deaths and injuries between government forces and supporters of Boqor Burmadow in Derarweyne and Karin early this week. Peaceful demonstrations calling for the release of Boqor Burmadow are being organised in towns and villages in Togdheer and western Sanag. A former SNM general who wishes to remain anonymous told our reporter in Buroa that senior SNM officers, mainly of Haber Jeclo clan are now regrouping in El-Afweyn and Dararweyne environs. Militias initially dispatched to the frontline to fight against Puntland State police forces in Sool, Sanag & Ayn are now rethinking the purpose of a war which only serves the political schema of the ruling party. Boqor Burmadow’s arrest perceived illegal, unconstitutinnal, and undemocratic in many corners is believed to have further widened the gap between the opposition and the government. The officer noted that supporters of Boqor Burmadow have been organizing themselves and strategizing in Togdheer and Sanag since Boqor Burmadow’s illegal arrest. Efforts to avert further clashes are being made by traditional leaders, even though they seem to have given up on the issue as their role has been marginalised. Link ........... Ayoub – I see you are being a good student in learning the robes of the trade by taking a leave out of Mr oWeyne’s book of never addressing the issue at hand, rather ducking and diving, if falling sullenly face-down-first with a below-the-belt weak throw in the hope of perhaps landing a lucky winner. Not on my watch sonny! I shall, as nature would have it, say nay in taking credit so long as you continue giving me credit for works of others. Moving along, let us observe the quoted reflection of Mr Dhiilod which you felt would serve your purpose. What you failed to notice though could be found in these lines here: “….waxa ka mid ah wadada Jayga ah ee Ceerigaabo, taas oo degmo waliba waxay samaysay 20 – 23km” These, my dear Ayoub as evident in not only his observation, but also attested to by the locals in the said towns are community-funded development projects [note the term community], and as commendable as these are, the Riyaale administration could not be given credit for it. Moreover, similar projects have been implemented in all regions of Somalia including Mogadishu. So, as you could see no jewel in there. Now, let us give you another line in the following statement from one of the SL sites: “….waxay u arkeen dadka gobolkaasi in waxa Somaliland geeyey ay tahay "Quus kama-dambays ah". Waxa kale oo uu noqday wasiirkii ugu horreeyey ee inta uu Puntland ka tago Somaliland gala, iyada oo hadda ka hor ay caadi ahayd in siyaasiyiinta reer Sool marka xilka Somaliland ay ka hayaan laga qaado inay galaan Puntland, laakiin aan la arki jirin kuwo ka yimaadda Puntland oo Somaliland taga” Somaliland.org The words of the honourable Mohamed A Hashi. “dhiiloodna muddo dheer qaadan mayso in aanu aragno isaga oo agtayada taagan, waxaanuna aamin sanahay in aanu dhabbada xaqqa aha ku taaganahay ”Need I say more. Why all the hum hum then? Colonels and Generals (and they do matter a lot more than a suspect minister stripped of his governmental mandate under such circumstances) have joined the Puntland side. I did not hear anyone making a fuss over that. Shows the difference ‘ween the two sides, does it not? Back to the topic at hand, I am glad to see that you are excusing yourself in forming an opinion on the matter, and yet manage to push it to others to stand up for the natural civil liberties and civil rights of the victims of the beleaguered administration in Hargeisa. How very convenient. More importantly, In case, you have not been told my dear lad, I was one of the first to denounce the administration in Garowe at the time when Sultan Hurre’s death has reached in our part of the world. Too bad the same could not be expected from you where the illegal imprisonment of Boqor Burmadow is concerned. Then again, the man (Burmadow) represents a legacy which the likes of fail to embrace albeit spew in a flush with the touch of a finger at your naval buttons cows wallop to the exasperation of anyone in close proximity. Have the courage to voice your opinion old boy? Oh, I forgot, you are afraid the NSS boys might hack your systems by way of the cyberspace and have you arrested! Clever, that is. Do you read me son?

There is nothing worthy of reflection of what Garad AGani said in that interview. It was expected, and he simply expressed his displeasure with the administration in Puntland. Interestingly though, AGani to this date remains in Lasanod, roams freely, shares his opinions at liberty, and still is a staunch critic of the administration. Ever wondered why he has not been placed under house arrest? Or taken out of his residence in the midst of the night? No my son, Sultaan Hurre died in a regrettable, unfortunate shootout ‘ween his bodyguards and the Dervishes, and NOT ‘cause of expressing his opinion. How was he any different from Garad AGani, Sultan Garase, Garad Shirwac, the Beldajiye in Bosaso, and most of the Arta sympathisers. I hardly hear anyone being bullied, arrested or exiled from their own country for his or her political beliefs. The question that remains unanswered my dear Ayoub is this: why are you supportive of a system that indiscriminately stifles intellectual freedom and scholastic exercise? Or do you struggle differentiating the system (repressive) from the State (entity)? Cheers.

Lander – it is prudent to stick with the reference notes, and leave matters beyond one’s comprehension fathomable by way of hard knuckles to others, all right mate? Silanyo could hardly be expected to disappoint and disturb the civility, for if he were susceptible to resorting to such acts, and such were the nature of the man, anyone would have hardly bothered observing his views on the political narratives of the region. Perhaps a few scores of years down the scorching course, you will have gained deeper conception of the prevalent settings in the Horn, and then you will have realised the reason for sharing these perspectives. Until then, cheerio!

‘Intellectual’ Migrant Coolies – Irrational Rationalists One of the pillars of Western democratic societies is the ‘freedom to express ones opinion’, but how ironic it is, that its proponents parading themselves as ‘intellectuals’ resort to knee jerk reaction, when they are unable to address legitimate criticism(s) of the issues at hand. To our surprise - they are not the real intellectuals of the West - they are largely economic migrants who have become the vanguard of Western democracies. The underlying principle proposed by these conformist-economic-migrants is that: any criticism(s) of the system is hypocritical whilst residing and enjoying the fruits of the same country. Of course, the application of the principle is exclusively reserved for dissident-migrants, who have either settled or are second generation plus, in the West. This implies that only the native white citizens like Noam Chomsky are entitled to dissent, where as the dissident-migrants should either conform to the status quo (assimilate) or leave the country (repatriate). Isn’t it ironic that the conformist-economic-migrants as vanguards of Western democracies are using the language of the racist right, who are demanding same, i.e. assimilate or repatriate? It should be noted that, presenting such types of ‘argument’ appears to be a convenient way of avoiding the real issues and the opinions expressed by the dissident-migrants. The above principle argued by the conformist-economic-migrants implies that one can legitimately criticise only from a distance, in foreign lands. Therefore, hypothetically, if the whole world had been unified by a single ideology, all the dissidents would be required to move on to the next planet! The points below elaborate on some of the clear fallacies of the argued principle. a) The idea clearly contradicts the much-trumpeted premise of ‘free speech’. The very notion of ‘free speech’ entails accepting dissension within the status quo in order for it to have any meaning. It wouldn’t quite be freedom of speech if everyone was compelled to agree with the consensus, would it now! Thus, instead of absorbing the dissident viewpoints in line with the notion of ‘free speech’, these conformist-economic-migrants are trying to stifle any form of criticism. Yet, they constantly brag about their enlightenment as a result of embracing the notion of ‘freedom’ in the West. b) The issue of expressing criticism is an inherent right of any citizen, not a privilege. Therefore, by selectively singling out the dissident-migrants is clearly a form of discrimination based on ethnicity. Some go even further by issuing threats of expulsion as soon as they exercise their legitimate right(s). What happened to the boasts of being elevated by tolerating divergent views? c) If one were to follow this warped logic everyone would end up becoming an armchair critic (similar to themselves i.e. conformist-economic-migrants), as they could only criticise from great distance rather than effectively from within. Which is also a clear indication of cowardice. d) Genuine changes almost always occur from within. Those who criticise the existing system are often motivated by injustice and oppression. As an example, the black community in America formed the civil rights movement to demand greater protection from rampant racism. So, by following the logic of these conformist-economic-migrants, the Afro-American community should have either migrated back to Africa or simply accepted the status quo! e) To the conformist-economic-migrants it is apparently hypocritical to criticize, and yet ‘enjoy’ the “fruits” of that society. Hypocrisy by definition is to contradict ones stated criterion(s) and opinion(s), this obviously, has no relationship with ones place of abode! Besides, many of the dissident-migrants are second generation plus and never migrated to the West in the first place. As for the “fruits”, this is the product of the entire society from the collective effort of all the citizens. Therefore, every citizen is entitled to enjoy it. Therefore the argument proposed by the conformist-economic-migrants is not the result of profound thought and research but simply reflecting the mindset of the typical self-haters begging to be accepted by the establishment. It is rather more appropriate to describe them as modern day ‘intellectual’ migrant-coolies, instead of using their physical potential; they are employed, or prostitute themselves by offering their ‘intellectual’ services. Many of these migrant-coolies go beyond the diktats of their masters in their zeal to demonstrate obedience. As shown above, in their passion to protect their masters they defend Western values like “freedom of speech’ by attempting to silence the critics. Yet, they have the gall to accuse others of hypocrisy! Migrant-Coolies as Islamic ‘experts’ Some of these ‘intellectual’ migrant-coolies have extended their services by proclaiming themselves as ‘experts’ in Islam, merely because of Muslim ancestry. When it comes to Islamic experts, the Western mass media is full of them, you have Jewish ‘experts’, atheist ‘experts’, Christian ‘experts’, and even the professed anti-Islamic ‘experts’, but nowhere can one see the experts who actually profess to adhere to the message of Islam. One should note that all these so called ‘experts’ amongst the migrant coolies usually have three things in common: they have received no formal education in Islam, no attempt has been made to engage with genuine Islamic scholars and they never provide an alternative. The migrant-coolies argue, that all the Islamic commandments have to be sanctioned by the human mind. One can already witness the ‘logic’. The divine revelation from the all mighty has to be approved by the human mind, which was the creation of the all mighty in the first place! So the fallible human mind to used in ratifying the infallible all mighty! Isn’t it a bit like the machine attempting to maintain and repair its creator? Of course, even this example is inadequate since the disparity between the creator and the creation is immense by definition. They mock religion in general but yet assume to uphold and use religious criteria’s, whilst not realising it, as one would expect from ‘intellectual’ coolies. As for example, they oppose incestuous marriages, but if the ration is the sole criteria, what is the rational reason for not marrying ones mother or sister? Many of them have wives, so why resort to the religious institution of marriage instead of cohabiting? Similarly, can one not argue on the basis of ration to terminate all the abnormal human beings within society, in order to prevent the perpetuation of genetic disorders? Issues of ethics and morality are not simply a matter of mechanical computation of the mind but emanates from a certain belief about life itself. When a thief steals there are no independent magic formula to derive the just retribution but it simply comes down to ones belief. If there is a magic formula, then can these coolies explain why serial killers in US are executed but they are kept alive in warm cells in Europe? Can they also explain their constant rants about the ‘immoral’ nature of polygamy but yet they sanction homosexuality and other forms of perversions? NB: The reason for their lack of substation is that, they have little to offer other than being critical of Islam, a true characteristic of intellectual bankruptcy. Some of these migrant-coolies do not bother to hide their vile polemic under the guise of ‘legitimate research’. Recently, in a well-known website, a author has engaged in using abusive and foul language in maligning the Prophet of Islam as a ‘terrorist’ without defining what constitutes ‘terrorism’. Nor does he attempt to elaborate on the various criterions that he uses to malign the Prophet of Islam. Not surprisingly, he also does not provide any alternative. Anyone can engage in endless diatribe but genuine scholarly criticism is usually accompanied with an alternative. Such ‘intellectual’ migrant-coolies are without honour, who have nothing to protect, as they are empty of any genuine solutions other then their constant rant and foul mouthing against Islam. So, they go about like the Mongol hordes attempting to commit only destruction not to rebuild anything. Scholars of Islam in the past have had genuine debates with the scholars of Europe and other civilisations. The likes of Imam Ghazali, Bayhaqi and others are still admired by the West for their scholarly engagement. Most of which these ‘intellectual’ migrant-coolies are dwarfs compared to the scholars of the West. They will have to do far more to pose a challenge to Islam. Abstaining from using foul language would be a first step in their education. The old principle of “judging the tree by its fruits” needs to apply here. Outbursts against Islam as being inherently evil has to be explained by these coolies as to why so many free citizens of West and around the globe are still embracing it considering the adverse publicity that Islam receives from the sophisticated and vicious mass media of the West. Islam is said to be fastest growing religion, hence it must have some level of inherent momentum and dynamics. In contrast, how many followers have these coolies produced in their attempt to be saviour to mankind from Islam by their constant waffle? Most certainly scribbling on the Internet and in their virtual world will not generate that sort of following. These intellectual migrant-coolies needs to reminded that the long history of Islam testifies to the resilience and dynamism of Islam in countering aggression, from the medieval crusades, Mongol invasion, European colonisation and now the naked aggression of Anglo-US-Israeli axis. Islam will not only survive the onslaught but it will grow stronger as its track record indicates. As its adherents and non-adherents (potential adherents) can clearly see the lies, hypocrisy and contradictions of those who shout “freedom”, “democracy” and “justice”. The fake war on ‘terrorism’ has only increased the number of converts and interest in Islam. Reformers of Islam - Wannabe Martin Luthers Amongst the migrant-coolies posing as Islamic ‘experts’ you have the more ambitious characters portraying themselves as reformers. There is a so-called aspiring ‘Muslim’ reformer who professes to be a Lesbian. Is that not like a thief or an adulteress preaching about the virtues of honesty or chastity? If anything, it is her lifestyle that is in need of reformation, rather than Islam. Here an analogy can be made, if an individual through cursory self-study, claims to have studied medicine, then proceeds to ‘refute’ and ‘debate’ well established professors of medicine, that individual would laughed at. What if that individual then proceeded to practise his/her ‘finding’s – that, obviously would not be a laughing matter; but a criminal act! Similarly, another prominent self-proclaimed reformer, a devout Islam hater and a professed feminist by the name of Taslima Nasreen. Like the previous case she also has no formal education in Islam. It is interesting that she has called for reformation rather then being frank and state what she really means, abandoning Islam altogether. Naturally, as one would expect she has been awarded fellowship at Harvard, audiences with heads of states, for her services in maligning Islam, using rehashed arguments borrowed from the Orientalists and Western feminists. Let alone provide any alternatives, these irrational rationalist fail to see their inherent contradictions within their own actions and statements. As an example she opposes polygamy but yet she confessed in her latest book to prostituting herself as a mistress to married men, thereby making many monogamous men polygamous! Another example is her constant bragging about the equality of the sexes as if they are identical in every aspect. Perhaps she can set an example by getting rid of the segregated male and female toilets and changing rooms at Harvard as a first step. Such types of segregation is practiced and indoctrinated to the school children even in the gender-obsessed Western world acknowledging the inherent differences in male and female. Note again, she offers plenty of criticism but very little in the way of alternative. Bereft of any intellectual originality and having failed to generate any kind of following, she has resorted to writing pornographic type of materials exposing her sexual ‘adventures’ in her old age. She states that she is not ashamed of what she has done; naturally, shame can be only felt by those who have honour and self-dignity. Just like wild beasts fornicating openly feels no shame, and human beings imitating the animals by disclosing personal information equally feels no shame. Irrational rationalists do not care to see their own folly. In advocating ‘reformation’ by abandoning all the core values, what then remains of Islam? Surely, this is nothing more than an attempt to dismantle Islamic teachings under the guise of ‘reformation’ The Western media, its intellectuals and governments have given such rabble-rousers an inordinate amount of publicity and support by honouring them with various accolades. This demonstrates how much they hate Islam whilst preaching that it is the Islamic world that is full of hate. Even if the Islamic world does express hate, is it abnormal to express such emotions, under occupation and aggression? It is clear to see that an honest insight into Islam is not the objective of the ‘open minded, liberal, enlightened, Western academics’. If this was their goal, why than have obscure, non-entities like the coolies in question, become reference points rather than orthodox Islamic scholars? Even their own academic institutions are providing ‘arguments’ and challenges that are far more scholarly and worthy of a response. Which also indicates how desperate the political leadership in the West has become in their quest to manufacture a modern day Islamic Martin Luther, thus they are ready to adopt any old coolie. Thus in summary, attempting to silence criticism(s), attacking Islam, promoting obscure individuals on the basis reformation are all aimed at undermining Islam. This shows that the West is still medieval when it comes to dealing with Islam. Intellectually inept to cope with arguments hence they are increasingly resorting to the fascists tactics of their forefathers by incarceration, slandering though its powerful mass media whilst denying Islam/Muslims a voice, of course the coolies are ever present offering their ‘services’. An open letter to the British Foreign Secretary British MPs
miles-militis posted a topic in Politics
An open letter to the British Foreign secretary, H.E Jack Straw and Hon. Members of the British parliament Written by Eng. Mohamed Ali Mirreh Email:mmirreh@hotmail.com The report delivered by the Honourable MPs to the British parliament, following their recent visit to the breakaway region of Somaliland was, if anything a product of myth and propaganda intentionally, compiled and formulated to assist the campaign of those who dream to secede from Somalia. However, what makes the report entirely unacceptable and disturbing is the fact that it was fictitious and utterly biased. It grossly exaggerates the importance of one clan to the extent that it is projected in the report as being the only clan that can determine the fate of Somaliland (northern regions of Somalia) while other clans in the north of Somalia are described as virtually non-existent with Somalis in the south as degraded and demons. Unfortunately, the esteemed MPs have been lured to propagate an information based, by and large on humbug and hearsay, but nothing is further from the truth. Quite diabolically, the report states that the Somalis from the south have destroyed the north and murdered their brothers and sisters, in the north with MIGs and tanks. The honourable, Tony Baldry testifies in the report that he saw mass graves, in which thousands of Somalilanders had been murdered. If we hypothetically assume the truthfulness of the MP having seen thousands of bodies piled and crammed into ditches and bones scattered in large areas, what made him so convinced that these were indeed Somalilanders? Can he provide the DNA profile of these bodies, verified by independent laboratories? And is he aware that there are other versions of the story? As one goes like this, that these bodies are from the massacre of displaced refugees from Ogaxxx during the famine of 1980s who were settled in the outskirts of Hargeisa and later been killed by SNM forces, relating the victims to the clan of Siyad Bare. It would have been wise if the hon. MPs have sought more balanced information about the saga of “Somaliland” by visiting the aforesaid regions, as an impartial fact-finding mission and listen others´ point of view prior to, taking into face value what has been narrated from one side As a viable Somaliland government is not practical for the simple reason that the people of Sanag, Sool, Ayn (Cayn) and Awdal are not supporting the policy of secession and for “A no man is good enough to govern another man without that other’s consent” we, the people of Sanag, Sool and Ayn (Cayn) ardently hope that Her Majesty’s government and Hon. members of the British parliament will not contemplate the dismantling of the Somali State, and in granting a recognition and sovereign status a sub-clan on the grounds of false and imbalanced information provided by such a clan or sub-clan, which if granted will undoubtedly re-ignite other rounds of destructive clan warfare and fresh round of hostilities and revenge taking. Very simple mate. The only way to keep the peace so far as Somalia is concerned is to commission a mighty cavalry so as to guard the sovereignty of the territories. Equally important is the fact that prosperity and development of any kind, public or private, shall not be encouraged, and could not be sustained, unless protection could be guaranteed. All nations do it, thusly Puntland is no different. From the historical perspective, nations with stealth army take the lead in matters of technological, economic, and societal advancement. Rome of A.D could be taken as an example. Israel, Pakistan in the developing world with Washington and its geopolitical dominance might be more pertinent in modern history. More importantly and in the Somali context, had Puntland not had the Dervishes, it would have long ago been attacked from the North and from the South, for the people of Northwest as is apparent at the moment are practising territorial expansionist ideology, thusly unless they fear the might of the Dervishes, they would annexed SS & Ayn as desired. The same applies to the warlords in the South, and the fate of Puntland would have been the same as that of Baidao and Kismayo. Just for a moment, imagine what Mr oWeyne and Horn here would have done had they had it their way and the muscle to match it. We have seen what the SNM had done in Erigavo and Buhodle, and the USC in Galkayo and Kismayo. So there you have it. The old saying “Nin aan calaacashaadu kaa reebin ...” quite springs to mind. The stronger the Dervishes, the more sentential the State! Cheers.

On the issue of democratic process and freedom of expression: “....hadda dalku marayo heerkii qofka Siyaad Barre wax ka sheega la odhan jirey Qaranimaduu ka hor yimi. Waxa uu ka sheekeeyey marxaladdaas, isaga oo soo qaatay qiso ka dhacday Muqdisho waqtigaas oo ahayd “Islaan dawersanaysa oo Ceel-gaab dhex maraysey ayaa ilmo yar oo ay xambaarsanayd ku ooyey, dabadeedna waxay ku tidhi waar naga aamus wax yahayow afka weyn leh. Wax maqlay Guulwadayaashii iyo NSS-tii oo islaantii xidhay iyagoo leh waxaad u jeeddaa Madaxweynaha”. This beautifully depicts the oligarchic nature of the pluralistic political idiosyncrasies practised by the godFather of Hargeisa – Mr Riyaale himself, and says it: Waxana uu xusay oo uu dhacdadaas barbardhigay Xadhigga Boqor Cismaan Buurmadow oo maxkamadda lagu keenay eedaymo la xidhiidha in uu Madaxweynaha aflagaadeeyey ama wax ka sheegay. Goes for the salacious succulent gut, and Riyaale’s association with the Berbera massacre in his days as the commander of the notorious NSS (Hangash): “Waa la soo qaadayaa xasuuqii iyo ciddii xasuuq geysatey”. Isaga oo sheegay in dowladda ay ka buuxaan kuwaasi. On the issue of crimes against humanity in the hands of the leadership of the ruling party: “In alla inta maanta Madaxtooyada iyo agagaarkeeda wax ka ahi 90% waxay u badan tahay intii halganka ka soo horjeeddey, intii Faq******ta ahayd, intii xasuuqa ka qaybgashay intii hawlahaa ku jirtey,” ayuu yidhi. Here, he lays into Awil (minister of Finance) and isma’il (Interior): Waxana uu xusay in ninkii khiyaameeyey waqtigii ay jirtey Dowladdii Soomaaliya ee Midnimada Soomaaliya loo dagaalamayey ee sirta u gudbiyey Cadowga, markii dambe ee halganku bilaabmay ee Somaliland loo dagaalamayey-na dhinaca kale ka soo jeestay ay maanta halkan wax ka yihiin. “Anigu dalka Somaliland baan aaminsanahay, u soo dagaalamay, u soo halgamay, u joogaa oo aan digaacayaa” ayuu yidhi.
