  1. What is the government even doing? Apart from this? Selling Somalia to foreigners? Celebrating independence is good and a way of remembering, but we need a country to celebrate first.
  2. Sorry, I don't know. I thought you could just use a pdf?
  3. I really don't understand the word Islamist. Why is there no such thing as Christianist, Hinduist, Jewishist, buddhis- oh. Nevermind. But the word Islamist has negative connotations when in fact anyone can be an Islamist as Khadafi mentioned. It is confusing. The media should chose their words more carefully and fairly.

I gather you're not much of a cooking person @Juxa, cambuulo and marksman - I have to agree with you, foodies make food interesting @Warsamaale - do you live by the coast?

Thanks for the welcome Alpha Blondy! It looks like you can cook A typical Somali diet is filled with carbs and meat (rice, pasta, lamb etc) so it would be hard to recommend you a good diet based on Somali food. It's quite an interesting question, maybe I'll try to write a healthy meal plan made only from Somali food. The main rule is eat more fruit/veg/'natural' foods i.e nothing processed or prepacked. Breakfast: Porridge/omelette with slice of wholewheat bread and veggies/homemade smoothie Lunch: Chicken/fish with quinoa/buckwheat and plenty of green veggies such as broccoli and green beans. Dinner: Homemade soup or a salad Also, try having one half of your plate filled with veggies/fruit. Hope that helped.

Apophis - a foodie is someone who really really likes eating/making food. Seems like we have a baker! I love to bake too, carrot cake being my favourite What's your fave, Reeyo? Haatu - I used to be just like you, but I had to leave home leading me to discover masterchef. Has anyone seen this Somali food blog? It's made by a couple from Canada.

It's one of the greatest pleasures but can also cause great pain and suffering. It has the power to rebuild your health, or make it worse. It brings people together and allows them forget their differences. Food is awesome! I was quite surprised to see no one had started a thread about food (correct me if I'm wrong). So, how many foodies are there on here? What's your favourite dish (Somali/non-Somali)? And do you cook?
  9. Thank you for the warm welcome Reeyo!

The reasoning was that this should be done because men are or would be the 'leaders' of society and the 'heads of households' and they need to be enabled and empowered - not undermined - in fulfilling those roles. The implementation of that sort of thinking would mean: - Boys and men should be prioritised for receiving education, health care, job creation and government assistance. - NGO's who help women were particularly critisised... they should help men first, it was argued. etc. What do folks here make of that? That's just silly  It's like saying if there was a man and a woman who need urgent medical attention, the man should be treated first. I don't think we should be making choices in which we proritise someones needs on what gender they were born. For all we know, the man could be a serial killer and the woman could be a hard working single mother with young children. Education, healthcare etc should be given to everyone regardless of gender. This kind of behaviour would only cause more problems. The 'future leaders of society' will be lazy boys who have had everything handed to them on a silver platter with chauvinistic views and misogyny. I find it really disheartening when I read chauvinistic arguments like that, there is absolutely no logical reasoning behind any of their beliefs. They twist Islam for their own agenda, molded by their cultures. In my opinion, a mother is the most important 'leader of society'. She should be getting the most support because she will be bringing future leaders in this world.
  11. What a nice thread! Hearing about Somalis building million $ businesses in other African countries (and parts of Asia too), it's time we all went back to Somalia and rebuild it to its former glory. We're capable of doing all these things and have the resources/expertise/motivation. I guess now it's just a question of when and how - Somalia is still seen as a dangerous country from what I know. If we know about our history, we will go forward. Insha'Allah we will forget our differences and progress.
  12. I didn't know Mogadishu looked like this. Hearing all the horror stories, I expected to see ruins and blood! Glad to see the real Mogadishu
