Just as I was against the assault of Dabcadar in Hargeisa, I am against the witch hunt of journalists, singers, and poets for expressing their opinion in other parts of the world. The government of Somaliland hasn't got the constitutional authority to persecute people for whatever crime they commit when outside the borders of Somaliland. If the woman is guilty of breaking Somaliland's laws while in the country, then let her be in prison. But if her alleged crime had taken place in Mogadishu, then the government of Somaliland has no right to take away her freedom.

Somalia would have been saved from disaster but Somaliland was already a disaster zone by then. Even if the manifesto group had succeeded in persuading Siyaad Barre to step down, I don't think the Duriyada clan would have accepted business as usual and a direct rule from Mogadishu. At the very least, they would have demanded full autonomy.

Dictators are great for bringing about rapid social changes which positively impact on people's lives. To his credit general Siyaad Barre tried his best to integrate the Gabooye and other oppressed minority clans into the wider society but didn't have much success especially in the then northern region of the Somali Republic. The failure was probably due to the deterioration of the political climate of the country but if he remained as powerful and popular as he was in the 1970s, his social experiment could have succeeded and brought about an end to this age old oppression of our Gabooye brothers and sisters. Let us pray that Abdi Ilay succeeds now.

I remember last year when Russian diplomats came to Somaliland and immediately there was speculation about Russia wanting a military base in Somaliland. There is something about this story but I am quite apprehensive about Russian presence in Somaliland and what that could mean for our fragile democracy.

Just think of anything that Somalis will lose if they Ignored Ethiopia completely. To be honest with you I cannot think of any!!! Trade with Ethiopia is one way and Somalis especially Somaliland and Puntland have a massive trade deficit with Ethiopia which urgently needs correcting.

That is just your opinion and you are entitled to it. Ethiopia has a lot of interests in the Somali territories and can't afford to ignore the Somalis whether they are in Mogadishu, Garowe, Djibouti, or Hargeisa. But Somalis can actually ignore Ethiopia altogether and be just fine (in fact prosper except for Djibouti). Without Ethiopian drugs (Khat) we would be saving hundreds of millions of dollars annually.
