Xaaji indeed they are building a mammoth project to be called Istanbul bazaar ... An Ottoman-style market (Bedesten) in Somalia Economic vibrancy in Africa is not limited to investments for production and manufacturing. Turkish businessmen rely on different projects to revive the overall economy in the continent. One such project is the construction of a trade center that Mustafa Erkan, a businessman from İstanbul is in the middle of preparing in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. The facility, which will be named the İstanbul Bazaar, will host wholesalers of furniture, carpet and dry foods. The bazaar, also known as a bedesten, will likely make a $500 million contribution to Turkish exports every year. Noting that they have been doing business in South Africa for many years, Erkan says they are familiar with the continent. Erkan, recalling that Somalia is one of the best places to do business, stresses that the sources are scarce in the country and that it is not possible to find most products. Erkan further said: “It is almost as though there is no toothpick or needle in this country. This is also the case for the construction industry. The cement factory is idle. Iron is brought from other countries. The products imported from China are of low quality. In addition, the goods imported from Dubai are expensive.” Security is the greatest problem in Somalia. For this reason, the investors are hesitant to start business in the country. The İstanbul Bazaar offers a reliable and secure environment for investors. Noting that the Bazaar will serve the interests of both Somali and Turkish businessmen, Erkan says: “No VAT tax is levied on our products in places like Mogadishu. There isn’t a significant amount of transport cost because we are wholesalers. The profit margin is not so big. But because we are not retailers, we will not have to deal with the complaints by the local people.” So far, $15 million have been invested in the İstanbul Bazaar. In addition to contributing to the development of the Somali economy, the bazaar, which will open its doors in 2013, will also improve the overall employment in the country. Erkam Meriç who was assigned as general manager of the bazaar says that they will follow the traditional code of business inherited from the Ottoman times and they would like to revive the ethical code of the time. Details about the second phase will be announced after the construction of the first phase of the bazaar. Erkan says that further details can be obtained at www.istafbazaar.com

More news on the jaazira livestock facility Monday, December 24, 2012 By Adnan Hussein Nearly six months after its opening, the al-Jazira animal health facility and quarantine centre in Mogadishu is preparing to export its first shipment of livestock in March, according to officials. All livestock at the facility undergoes evaluation and treatment to ensure it passes international health safety standards before they are approved by the government for live export, said Mohamed Mohamud, director of agricultural development at the Ministry of Natural Resources. The facility, which was opened on July 28th in a ceremony attended by former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, is owned by private Somali investors and is managed under the supervision and guidance of the Somali Ministry of Natural Resources, he said. "Our health department is charged with supervising the new facility and will quarantine sick animals," Mohamud told Sabahi. "Diseased animals will be slaughtered and either burned or buried in order to prevent contamination of shipments." The livestock undergoing evaluation will be exported to Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt, he said, adding that the ministry is committed to provide healthy livestock at suitable market prices. The facility was built over three years and can hold 250,000 heads of cattle. The compound comprises grazing grounds and a water basin for sheep, cows and camels, as well as inspection facilities staffed with veterinarians and trained support staff. The project is part of a wide range of initiatives the government is supporting to revitalise Somalia's economy. Somali Minister of Natural Resources Abdirizaq Omar Mohamed said his ministry is actively working with investors to develop agricultural production, improve food safety and strengthen exports with regional trading partners. Attracting private investors and building the infrastructure necessary to successfully export Somalia's natural resources are a top priority for the ministry, Mohamed told Sabahi. "We will soon be able to celebrate our ambitious economic goals and [somalia] will be able, one day, to survive without external aid," he said. Mohamed said the ministry is currently working with private investors to resume the export of bananas, once a booming source of revenue for the country. The minister urged Somalis and foreign businesspersons to invest in Somalia and take advantage of the many lucrative opportunities available for developing the country's abundant natural resources. Deynaba Makaraan Barow, a 44-year-old pastoralist from Lower Shabelle, said the government's involvement in facilitating and promoting livestock exports is an encouraging sign. "The livestock trade during the days of the former central government [before the civil war] was a significant source of economic stimulus for the country," Barow told Sabahi. She said she is hopeful that Somali herders can once again export their livestock at those same levels.

Somalia: The Turkish vice prime minister lay foundation of a hospital and new terminal at Mogadishu airport. During his visit, Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag lay foundation of a hospital and new terminal at Mogadishu airport to be constructed by Turkey and be in informed on education, health and infrastructure projects in Mogadishu. Turkish deputy premier arrived in Somali capital of Mogadishu on Saturday. During his visit, Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag will lay foundation of a hospital to be constructed by Turkey and be in informed on education, health and infrastructure projects in Mogadishu. The Turkish vice prime minister also laid the foundation today the construction of a new terminal at Mogadishu airport. Around $150 million will be expended to upgrade Aden Adde international.. project including spacious departure and arrival hall..14 new gates with jetway bridges..upgrading runway and new tower for air traffic control.. New jet fuel depot. New power station in the airport and two new aircraft hangar. P.S I hear that there is still a debate going on that a brand new airport is to be built rather than an expansion of the current one, according to people at the airport it would be built on the northern outskirts of the city near Bal'ad, but personaly I think that is wishful thinking as the turk deputy premier already made a commitment to this particular expansion, I think such an expansion would be more than adequate for Somali aviation needs in Southern Somalia, maybe some one wlse with greater knowledge could clarify for us.

[Mustafa Abdi/AFP] Construction workers renovate a bombed-out building in Mogadishu. The government will soon start large-scale development projects after years of heavy fighting reduced much of the city to rubble. [Mustafa Abdi/AFP] Related Articles The reconstruction activities fall under the $9.6 million Dan Guud project, which is funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and part of the Benadir administration's strategic plan for 2013, municipality spokesman Mohamed Yusuf said. "This project is an important part of a larger plan put in place by the city to repair the infrastructure of Mogadishu," he told Sabahi. "Each of Mogadishu's 16 districts has been allocated $606,000 for rebuilding the infrastructure of the capital so that it can be transformed into a modern city that can compete with other capitals." After two decades of fighting, much of Mogadishu's once vibrant atmosphere has been ruined. But after al-Shabaab was forced from the city in August 2011, the government has worked to rebuild the city and restore it to its former glory. He said the project will begin in eight districts: Yaqshiid, Dharkenley, Waberi, Hamar Jajab, Warta Nabada (formerly known as Wardhigley), Hiliwa, Bondhere and Daynile.
