I'm confused, what are the programs offered at these universities? Are they technical/trade schools? I doubt they have the intensive curriculum or funding required for any research, so why are they called universities?

Periplus of the Erythraean Sea refers to a slave market in several Somali market towns about 2000+ years ago. There's was much more activity during the Arab slave trade, but I'll have to get back to you on the sources behind that. @Carafaat,I find nothing wrong with the first part, if Africans were naive enough the trade their gold for consumable goods, then that was their fault. As for the second part, if you go back far enough everyone has blood on their hands. The fact that you're able to live in a foreign country as a refugee with full access to amenities is repayment enough, there's no need to ask for more. In fact, former colonies tend to get preference for immigration, so in a way they are paying back.

What about welfare misuse in Scandinavia? How about the Somalis who benefited from ancient slave trades and even played a part themselves?

Do we even have fishing boats capable of bringing the fish to other markets? I mean trawlers with refrigeration and processing capabilities. This is why the first challenges for the government to tackle should be electrical, water and road infrastructure, everything else should be secondary.

This is just a reaction to all the publicity that Mogadishu has been getting, this tirade would've made sense about a year ago, but this is just pathetic. When you seek recognition by bashing your counterparts, no one takes you seriously.

I'd say unemployment for Canadian and American Somalis is much lower than their European counterparts, but the Somali youth in North America tend to be involved in more serious crimes for some reason. I don't even run with rough crowd or have many Somali friends, but I can name at least five guys off the top of my head who have either been shot or stabbed at some point.

It's nice to see the service sector picking up, but we really need heavy industry (cement factories, ship building and other manufactured goods). Somalis have an amazing affinity for provided great services, the only thing missing is the secondary industry, couple that with our primary industries (our wealth of natural resources) and the sky is the limit.

We have more than enough arable land as it is and will have much more once irrigation projects are put in place. We also have a massive coast, yet most regions of Somalia don't Incorporate fish in to their diet, the cause of that may be economic reasons though as there is no viable way for fisherman to bring their catch to any inland markets (refrigeration, logistics etc.). So again, the demographics of our nation may be pose a problem in the future, but let's focus on properly managing our abundant. My one fear for Somalia's resources can be seen in discussions pertaining to the ongoing oil exploration, there are those who have fallen for the false sense of prosperity in the emirates and wish to emulate it in Somalia, I personally think Iran is a much better example for Somalia in seeking a diverse and viable economy.

No one said having a large population will lead to development, in our case it is independent of economic growth. In any case I'm speaking of our current population, it's young and if properly utilized can make big changes (although I doubt it'll ever happen). As the economy develops in Somalia, the purchasing power of foreign remittance will be nullified and the population will react accordingly (have less children or die), besides you haven't taken the current situation in to account, who knows what the current population of Somalia is, I have a feeling that it's a lot lower than 10 million.

Don't pull the cart before the horse, fertility rates decline naturally as the economy develops. In fact, Somalia should see massive development in the future if the resources of having such a young population are used properly. Fortunately for Somalia we have more than enough resources to feed a much larger population in the future, so the situation isn't as dire as in say Niger or Mali. It will be a problem though, if our nation doesn't get its act together soon, we need to re-evaluate how we hand out remittances to family members back home, there needs to be some sort of incentive for them to be self-dependant.

No one can say whether it is commercially viable or not, although it is likely to be commercial. You can blame everyone on here for hyping it up as some sort of elephant field. These two wells will like produce 100-300 million barrels each, but if you look at where they are drilling, you will notice that this second well is closer to the centre of the basin. They are going to prove up the basin and if successful, there will be several dozen wells dug in the region. The offshore oil is where the big players will really be interested in though, with the large finds of natural gas off Mozambique and Tanzania, it is already looking rather promising.

You don't really have much to worry about. I lost a close cousin while I was in Edmonton, his choices as well as the choices made by his murderer(s) are what lead to his death. The reason why this is big news is obvious, look at how many bystanders who were injured .They really need stiffer sentencing for people like this, there's a guy who was acquitted of murder living down the street from me, he was arrested again a couple of weeks ago after police found a gun in his home (they also shot his dog).Canada's violent crime rates are much lower than the U.S's,but our recidivism rates are roughly the same, so the social programs are successfully keeping people from becoming criminals, now we just need to lock guys like this up for life.
