  1. Don't whites make up 72.4% of the United States' population? Making the 70% number unremarkable? The fact they're all men is more concerning.
  2. Why the fuss? It actually seems like an understandable conclusion for someone to come to.

Where did I infer that? Look at the Blacks of the past who had to overcome real strife and as a result formed strong community bonds and compare them with the ingrates running around today.
  4. It doesn't seem like things are getting better with African-Americans. The large drops in homicides and drug crimes since the 90's have more to to with an ageing demographic than anything commendable. In fact, the SAT score gap between African-Americans and White-Americans is still increasing. This goes beyond the socio-economic conditions of these neighbourhoods and has more to do with how culture determines a group's reaction to poverty.

Genetic tests have actually shown that Arab speaking Maghrebis have little to no Arab admixture with Berber speakers having a slight bit more. The Arab ethnic group is no different than the Chinese ethnic group in that it was spread through a mixture of conquest and cultural assimilation through trade. The Arab ethnic group is strictly a cultural-linguistic conglomeration of ethnic groups, similar to Jews.
  6. I admire the resilience of Somali-Kenyans. They, unlike the western Somalis, face true adversity, yet they carry on without howling about the lack of government money and basketball courts.
  7. Did they wander about aimlessly for decades before arriving in Xamar?
  8. Most European countries suffered greatly under totalitarian regimes, with Romania being the most recent example. They all dealt with it on their own, even as many of their governments/monarchies were supported by the governments/monarchies of other nations. If a revolution in Syria can't muster up enough support to overthrow the oppressors, then it's not much of a revolution.
  9. It'll take several generations before these hoodlums stop terrorizing their communities. What's worse is that they reproduce at an alarming rate when compared to the average law abiding African-American.
  10. Chicago had 943 homicides in 1992, so no biggie. NYC had 2,200+ in 1990 and Toronto's worst year came in 1990 as well with a grand total of 91 homicides.
  11. The numbers coming out of Ethiopia (even accounting for possible embellishment) are scary. Scary not for Somalia, but for Ethiopia. If the government doesn't fully utilize many of the dam projects underway and make in- roads with the scattered communities through economic development, a population collapse will be imminent. The fact that many of the protected wildlife reservoirs are being encroached upon by subsistence farmers is a sign of how desperate people are already becoming.
  12. Here's a great Guardian article on the population of Kibera : Africa's Propaganda Trail: The missing millions of Kibera
  13. nuune;902416 wrote: According to Western istatistikis, there is 77 death in every 1000 born, good news for aid workers as they cash more. Somalia proper population is now heading towards 19.7 million, if we add NFD to that it will be 28.3 million, add to Somali Galbeed, and we have 32.2 million, now add to Djibouti and total we have 48 million Somaliweyn, don't forget to add Somalis in the diaspora, that makes it 57.3 million in total of all Somalis from all corners of the world. Source According to your estimates, the Somali population can be broken down like this: Somalia-19.7 million NFD ~ 9 million Somali Galbeed ~ 4 million Djibouti ~ 16 million Diaspora ~ 11 million I've seen some generous numbers thrown around before, but these are ridiculous.
  14. I think describing any war as 'good' is strange, the term that should be used instead is 'silver lining'. War = Bad, Silver-lining = learning from past mistakes and utilizing our diverse experiences in our new countries. Then again, not all is great with Western Somalis and I'd argue that Somalis who went abroad before the war made better use of their time in developed nations.
  15. Apophis;902200 wrote: I would compare Somalis with other Africans rather than Middle Eastern and Asians. Even then, the Eritrean and Rwandan communities here are generally well off. No matter how low you set the bar, we seem to be under-achievers. According to the Toronto District School Board, people who speak Somali and Portugese had the lowest graduation rates. If you consider the fact that Portugese boys typically have a job lined up in the construction business, where does that leave us?
  16. Apophis;902193 wrote: ^ that maybe true but it would only be significant if the percentage undertaking such activities are more than the general population and also the comparable immigrant population. Analysed from that perspective, I believe we are no more "good" or "bad" than our peers. Aaliyyaah: you have a point (btw, your name has too many letters). I disagree. If you compare Somali-Canadians with Chinese/Korean/Iranian/Lebanese-Canadians it become clear that Somalis are not on par with the average immigrant. There's also the visibility issue, if one drives through a run down neighbourhood in Toronto, the most identifiable group will almost always be Somalis (black + Muslim attire), making us the easiest group to pick on. The constant stream of Somali homicides on the news makes matters worse.
  17. At the heart of any exaggeration or stereotype is a grain of truth. The general public perception in the west of the Somali community being filled with freeloaders and criminals is not without merit.

Break the shackle and be bold enough to face life without prejudice of the haters. Was that a pre-composed comment? None of it addressed xabad's question.
  20. There was apparently another tropical storm that made landfall in the same region a few months ago: Tropical Storm Murjan

I think storms of this magnitude are rare in this part of the world but I remember watching a BBC documentary that stated cyclones could reach as far as the Red Sea as global temperatures increase. I'll try to find it.
  23. I hope the residents of the valleys in Northern Somalia get adequate warning as the flooding can be dangerous.
  24. You wouldn't happen to be called Samha on ForumBiodiversity would you? You sound like her:http://www.forumbiodiversity.com/showthread.php/171-Somalis/page24?p=1019070#post1019070
