1. Watch what happens when this incompetent President "pardons" this Al-Shabab criminal and releases him from prison in order to appease his family. Just sign the papers and he's good to go! Have a nice day! It's been done before. Who says it can't be done again.
2. @Tallaabo said: Innaa Lillaahi wa inaa Lillaahi raajucuun. May her soul rest in perfect peace. Idinkana samir iyo iimaan Alle ha idin siiyo. AMIIN. Ameen. Allahunaxaristu
3. A life-time prison sentence doing hard labor is a fitting end to this man. This is what happens when amateur nobody's run for the Office of President of Somalia. Take notes everyone. This is what you get when an incompetent loser becomes our President.
4. Why is this man's head still on his shoulders? You know, there's a time to be brutal when it comes to punishment. And this is one of those times The Head of Security should immediately execute this man and fired those responsible for hiring him.
5. This man was a mentor to some of the Somali kids in the neighborhood. He's from North York, which is a suburb of Northern Toronto. He lived in the neighborhood, grew up there, and he was a teacher at the local Toronto public schools. So it's not unusual that he was out late at night. I know several guys that are just like him. Allahunaxaristu
6. He's absolutely the worst possible person to lead Somalia at this critical time. We couldn't have asked for a worse leader than Qoslaaye
7. @Che -Guevara said: Who's radicalizing these kids? More importantly, who paid for their ticket? The reality of war will baptize them and kick some sense into thick skulls, but by then, it might be too late for them to get out. I think there were two sisters from Norway that went to Syria as well? What I don't get is Somalis taking keen interest in conflicts that have nothing to do with them. If you want to "help" Muslims, go to your country of origin and help displaced families. After all, charity is also important in Islam, not mention it is less dangerous. I agree 100%. If more Somalis paid attention to what's going on in their country instead of Syria or Iraq or some other place, then Somalia's issues could be mitigated, if not resolved. There are hundreds of thousands of impoverished families in Somalia alone. So we should focus on them first. Allah granted us wealth and prosperity. So it's better we use it to help those Somalis who were less fortunate than us. Charity begins at home
8. This guy was laughing when the Parliament buildings were just attacked! I can't believe what I'm seeing. Either he's working with Al Shabab directly, or he's an incredibly stupid man. It's one of those two options.
9. LOL are you serious? Qoslaye tried to stop this project from going through? What can he possibly gain from this.....oh yeah. Never mind. It's Qoslaye we're talking about
10. With all of the problems occurring in the Muslim world. All of the problems occurring in the Horn of Africa, you would think that he would want Puntland to be stable for the sake of good-will But certain Somalilanders CELEBRATE when their next-door neighbors in Puntland go through problems. They're sick. Wallahi Mooge I don't know how you deal with such people.
11. Things like welfare, social assistance, and other Government policies are only possible when the State has the ability to collect substantial amounts of revenue. And THAT would only be possible if Somaliland actually has a strong tax base, which they don't. The country doesn't have a strong, stable middle class which can pay the taxes. So pensions should be out of the question. If a Somalilander Man chops firewood all day, would he be entitled to a pension? What about if he was a mechanic, or a fisherman? Would he be entitled to a pension? And if not, why not? Why should a teacher get a pension but not any of these other professions? It's ridiculous. It'll only bankrupt the Somaliland State. It's not like Somaliland is flush with cash. They're not exactly "rich", so why would they waste their scarce resources on giving money to retired teachers? Look at what happened to Detroit. The city government signed contracts, giving generous pension funds to retired schoolteachers, firefighters, cops, and city bureaucrats. It reached a point where over 60% of ALL the money the city collected, was used just on these pension funds. The city couldn't afford it, so they raised taxes. Which forced more businesses and people to leave Detroit. This bankrupted Detroit even more, and it's been an utter disaster ever since. Detroit used to be the richest city in America. And look at Detroit today. It's a cesspool.
12. @Holac said: What a sad bunch Somalis have become. We are always in the headlines all for the wrong reasons. Well, news is usually bad news. Obviously we'll never hear a story on BBC about a Somali getting his PhD Degree or a Somali doing something to benefit her community. Good news is usually never reported. The vast majority of Somalis live a simple (ie. "boring") life so you'll never hear their names reported on the news.
13. @Holac said: Dr. Kenney, the expectation was enormous for Abdi-weli, but he is struggling to do anything. Is it because he inherited a bankrupt state? I am not an expert on Puntland politics, but politics is not kind to the economics professor. I agree politics isn't kind for this man. He's stuck between a rock and a hard place. Puntland isn't seeking independence so they're not getting any of this special treatment that Somaliland is getting. Puntland doesn't host Mogadishu, so all of the investment projects of the last few years is going to Mogadishu instead of Puntland. And the Puntland diaspora community isn't doing enough to invest in their land. They'd much rather put their money in Zambia or South Africa instead of Puntland. Puntland could move forward if their people actually got behind Abdiweli and WORKED towards progress....instead of boasting about Puntland constantly on Internet Chat Forums and waving flags at Puntland Pride events in foreign countries. The State isn't going to build itself. But just look at this "Isbarmuuto" boasting that Puntland is about to fall apart and be finished. I noticed with the Somaliland crowd, they have this unexplained hatred for Reer Puntland, and want to see them finished off. I noticed it with Xaaji, with CidanSultan, and now with this person. This hatred is disgusting, I wouldn't expect it from foreigners in far-away countries, yet we see it everyday with the Hargeisa crowd
14. InshaAllah Puntland goes through this rough patch. Abdiweli Gaas really needs to think of new ways of raising revenue in his state, including encouraging native Puntlanders to invest and expand businesses in Puntland, which could go a long way in raising tax revenue. Even opening up an online account where the Government of Puntland receives donations from diaspora members can go a long way. 1000 dollar donations from Somalis living in America or Tanzania could help contribute to Puntland's State coffers. Several countries in the world already do this, and maybe Puntland can try this too.
15. @Dhagax-Tuur said: The easiest solution might be to create 'guriga Garcasta",set them their salary and whatnot, and then use them for the good of the country. Garcasta are well past the point returning them to the villages. Dictatorship is the way forward for Somalia. But We need good dictator, that's good for the country. Yeah we can't have a doqoon like Qoslaaye become the dictator of Somalia. He doesn't know what he's doing. He's too busy laughing and adjusting his belt size due to his growing calool. Now a smart dictator, who has actual love for his people, that would be a far better alternative.
16. What do you say Captain Smartlander? I have an idea Why don't we register everyone in Somaliland to vote, and those who vote for Wadani or Kulmiye should be arrested and deported from the Afro-Hashemite Republic of Somaliland! They are traitors and have NO right to live in the mighty Republic of Somaliland! And why don't they deport the rest of the people who didn't bother showing up to vote too? That way, at least 70-80% of the population can be deported. Somaliland can be cleansed of all the traitorous filth and they can have a strong Republic based on Afro-Hashemite values
17. If Siad Barre was not so short-sighted, then his country wouldn't be in the state it's in today. I don't know who convinced this man to ally with the Soviets, to apply failed Marxist economic policies, and to divide the people. I firmly believe that in 1969, if Siad Barre decentralized the nation into a number of federal states, and then applied free-market economic policies in Somalia, while fostering a strong military and a strong sense of national identity, then our country would be at the forefront of African development today, in 2014. In 2009, Al Shabab really had the opportunity to stabilize the country and create the "benevolent dictatorship" you speak of. They certainly had the power and resources to do so. But their leaders were so backward, so extreme, so abusive towards the people, and constantly threatening far-away foreign nations that they shot themselves in the foot. And now these extremist dogs will never recover from their short-sighted behavior.
18. The only way we can take power from these fat cats, is to create a strong Police Force and a strong National Military, but then this would be putting too much power into the hands of a few men, which is the very problem we are trying to run away from! The very solution to this crisis is the problem itself: Too much power in the hands of too few men. It's a serious dilemma. And until we fix this rotten culture, in the North and in the South, then progress in Somalia will be extremely slow at best, while the rest of Africa progresses and moves on. If we somehow manage to create a non-corrupt Police Force and a non-corrupt National Military, then all of this is very doable. But if we can't do it, then I don't know how we can see ourselves out of this mess. It's a tragedy
19. Adeer, I don't think Somalis will change overnight. And expecting Somalis to develop competent government institutions when we can't even organize proper community events in North America, is asking for too much. Here in America, the government can't even balance the budget, and Obama is running trillion dollar deficits and increasing spending like you wouldn't believe. He can't even run the Veteran Affairs Department, the IRS or the Justice Department. The federal government in America has so much corruption, incompetence and impotence......and this is in America. The richest country in the world. So why do we think that Somalis are gonna get it right? What's gonna stop a self-interested Somali from gaming the system and exploiting the country? Somalis have done it before during the Kacaan regime. They will do it again. This is a country where many people are pro-corruption as long as it benefits them and their sub-clan. The only solution to this adeer, in my humble opinion, is to take power out of their hands. Decentralize the power so that no man has too much power that he can pervert the system. Decentralize the entire country, decentralize the economy, and minimize the day-to-day tasks of the federal and state governments. Schools, hospitals, and banks should be privatized. Same with electricity departments, and water departments. If we take power out of the hands of these self-serving individuals, then it'll FORCE them to compete in providing services to the people. And everyone will benefit as a result. The corrupt self-serving men who CAN'T compete, will be forced into bankruptcy. Until we figure out a way to change the culture of the people (and this could take decades) then we have no choice but to do this.
20. Ramadan Kareem!! InshaAllah its great!!
21. Che I'm speaking about what ought to be. Not what is. I know many Lebanese people who are more pro-Lebanon than they are pro-Islam. That's the reality. But it doesn't mean that this is proper and right
22. There's no question that you should have some form of loyalty towards your countrymen regardless of their religion. So obviously an Egyptian Muslim would (and should) have affinity towards Egyptian Christians. But anyone would agree that principles are far more important than sharing the same nationality. Umar bin Khattab and Ali (who were Arabs) had far more in common with, and more loyalty to, to Bilal (the Ethiopian) and Salman (The Persian) than they did to men such as Abu Jahl and Umayya bin Khalaf (even though they were Arab).
23. Is she really claiming that her genetic background is more important to her than Allah's guidance? What a very twisted way of looking at things. She could have just as easily been born in Chile or Algeria or Cambodia. Why is being a Somali so sacred to her but being a Muslim not so sacred? My loyalty lies towards those who have the same values as me, and I'm much more justified in calling an Indonesian Muslim my "brother" than I would a Somali Non-Muslim. It's that simple. Principles are far more important than having a similar DNA background.
24. Wouldn't it be better to give Shabelleda Hoose to the HAG? And then form a State with Bay and Bakool regions only? Perhaps the RRA clan can make a deal with HAG, and agree to annex a portion of Lower Shabelle in order to have a viable port, to connect this port to the rest of Bay&Bakool, and then make an agreement to allow the HAG to annex a small portion of Bay district. In essence, they can perform a land swap. The HAG could get a small portion of Bay region. And the RRA can acquire a small portion of Lower Shabelle, so that they have a port which connects them to the ocean.
25. @Che -Guevara said: Somalia needs to be decentralized ( a strong central government but local issues left to the regions) but not in this way. Puntland opened Pandora's Box. Above anything else, there needs to be a genuine reconciliation, Somali-owned and Somali-led. So the 18 regions of Somalia would be the ones who handle local issues and provide government services? Some of these regions aren't economically viable and don't even have a significant population. Wouldn't it be better to combine some of these 18 regions into larger, viable, Federal States which can provide for themselves and are able to compete on the national stage? If we have Puntland, Galmudug, Jubbaland, Bay&Bakool, etc. Then how would this stand in the way of genuine reconciliation. And if the HAG community has a different mode of governance than the Puntland or Gedo community, then why not let them rule their regions the way they see fit? It's not like they're seceding from the nation. They still are the same country but we'll have 6 different Administrations and Somalis could freely move from state to state.
