1. Xabad, if it's necessary that every major clan in Somalia acquires it's own state, then so be it. I'd much rather have a Somalia that's split into 6 or 7 small peaceful and prosperous nations then have 1 large nation that's perpetually at war. But that's only if the civil war and the turmoil keeps going on and on and on.... Somalia already has a small population to begin with. If we were divided even further, some of the small nations will have literally like 1 million or 2 million people. Which is extremely manageable.
2. @Tallaabo said: This is Koonfuria for you Mr Galbeedi. The Koonfuria you want your Awdal to be part of. The Koonfuria you would love to see take control of the affairs and future of your people and children. You can give them Awdal on a silver plate if you want but we are not going with you. I can't even argue with you bro. Sometimes the truth is too painful to admit
3. I think Hassan Sheikh knows there's no possible way he'll return to power in 2016 so he's trying to benefit as much as he can from his current position as President. The Western powers, the Turks, and the Somalis won't allow him to return. He's lost all credibility and many of those Somalis who "support" this President only do so out of respect for the Office itself, but they have no respect for the man sitting in the Office. I hope we Somalis learn a lesson from all this, and that we CLOSELY scrutinize anyone who runs for President in 2016. Had we elected Abdiweli Gaas or Abdurahman Baadiyow, then maybe we would be in a far better position today
4. Read the citations saaxib. It directly leads to the actual UN Report
5. @Holac said: loooooooooool. His close relatives Adam, Ganjab and Amalo worked hard for the 6%?????? This is an unspeakable crime against million of Somalis on the cusp of starvation. I am losing any kind of hope for this country. Split it up. If we can't live together, then we might as well go our separate ways and live apart. Somalis (and Somalilanders) view the government as a means to enrich themselves. If a Somali from so-and-so Clan reaches political office, then he immediately looks at this appointment as an opportunity to enrich himself and his family. This man was gaajo his entire life, now he wants a piece of the pie. Instead of going into business to enrich yourself like any honest man would, these Somali politicians view politics as a way to get rich quick. It's a serious cultural problem we have. There's no honor amongst these men. No honor or integrity at all.
6. @Che -Guevara said: Mooge, would this picture change your mind? LOL This gentleman's in the White House. At least come with a tailored suit that fits you and actually looks nice. Authubilah. What is going on here. Imagery is very important here
7. @xabad said: cite them. This is just one of them. I'm actually quite shocked that you're not aware that population control is a very oft-proposed policy when it comes to dealing with Africa and India http://www.thenewamerican.com/world-news/africa/item/17291-un-unveils-plot-to-reduce-african-population
8. Conspiracy theory? Do I have to cite the countless proposals by Western policy-makers for population control in Africa? Do I have to cite the countless journals by Western Academics? Do you have your head stuck in the sand? I don't believe in ridiculous conspiracy theories, but some things are just very true. You just have to look around and see for yourself.
9. @xabad said: somali fertility rate is upwards of ~ 7 in somalia and somali inhabited places sxb. we are the highest along with Niger, Burkina Faso & Mali. There is urgent need for contraception amongst somalis. also, if you advocate for 4 or 5 kids then why are you against contraception ?? But how many kids in Somalia actually SURVIVE? The fertility rate is very high only because the death rate is extremely high as well. There's absolutely no need to have population control in our sparsely-populated country when the circumstances won't allow it. And BTW, I'm not against contraception. I'm totally for it, and I've said I have no issue if a Somali couple wants to adopt contraception. I'm just against the Western policy of having population control in Africa. That's all
10. Xabad it was very apparent. Which is why the current practice of FGM in North Africa is forbidden and should be made illegal in every single country. This current practice of female genital mutilation has done enormous damage to women all over Africa, and the harm that it has caused makes it obvious that this is forbidden. There is no harm nor reciprocating harm in Islam. It's a very well-known principle and it's why FGM is forbidden in Islam
11. Xabad, good job showing extreme examples and making it look like this is the ideal, or the norm. When I say Somalis should have more children, I was saying something in the range of 4 or 5 kids. Not this outrageous 13 children example.
12. In Islam there is a principle that there should be no harm, nor reciprocating harm. And since it's true that female circumcision harms many women--often severely harming them--then it is forbidden and not allowed to be carried out. It is not necessary, it often causes infection, and there are instances where the woman goes through years of excruciating pain. And as a result, many countries are banning it: http://muslimmatters.org/2011/01/22/yahoo-news-female-genital-mutilation-banned-by-islamic-leaders-in-mauritania/
13. @xabad said: all the stuff to be sold in that mall not one product is locally made. i don't think its sustainable, just repatriating hard cash for frivolous consumption.why not try renewable energy venture, agriculture etc. hate this carwo/hotel/restaurant qashin somalis are so fond of. +1 I 100% totally agree. Somaliland needs industry.
14. "Somaliland's territory keeps growing year after year" Warya who are you kidding? Do you really think you can get away with such nonsense on this forum? Somaliland capturing Taleex and other parts of "Eastern Somaliland" is nothing more than them effectively gaining control over lands they claimed 23 years ago during independence! All this does is show that the Somaliland Government doesn't even fully control it's own borders and you want to call that an effective state. Saaxib who are you kidding? Puntland has been a fairly effective state since 1998. And I'll be the first to admit that they may have spent too much time and resources in conflict with Somaliland/Khaatumo. Perhaps if they focused on developing Bari, Nugaal and half of Mudug, they might be in a better position today. But hindsight is 20/20. Somalia isn't dead. The Somali Republic is dead though. The unity between Somaliland/Somalia is dead. But that doesn't mean there won't arise separate autonomous republics in the Horn of Africa, with it's own unique system of governance. The Sultanates in Puntland in the 1800's (Ruled by osman mohamud) are merely a pre-cursor to the Puntland state of today. Somaliland is effective because their policy is outright separation. So they waste practically no time or resources trying to integrate with the rest of the country. But the rest of Somalia, including Puntland, is being forced to deal with an uncooperative Federal Government, which hinders progress. Sometimes I think it's better to just have Somalia split into several small states such as Ghana, Togo, Benin, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, Liberia, etc. (All of these are rather small countries in West Africa) Perhaps in a few generations, these small Somali states will re-unite into a larger Somali Republic. If it's in their interests
15. Cidan, don't pretend that your Republic isn't going through many of the SAME issues that Somalia is. Sure it's peaceful, sure the Somaliland Army controls most but not all of it's territory. But they still have many of the same problems. Somalia right now is plagued by tribal politicians who manipulate their people to gain power and prestige and fortune. Qoslaaye is just a symptom of this disease. And if Puntland can establish a functioning state in 1998 and keep it up for so many years--with all it's problems--then there will come a time when the rest of Somalia goes through the same painful stages of growth and state-building. People will die, famines will continue, and there will be border wars between these different states. But these are growing pains. Jubbaland will have to go through it, and so will Hiiraan and Galmudug and other states. No one said it'll be easy, but to deny that Somalia in 2014 is in a far FAR better position than it was in 1992 means you don't know what's going on.
16. Yeah, all of us are idealists in our own way. But the reality on the ground speaks for itself. And I can't see any solution in the short-term. Somalia's gonna have to go through some painful growing pains. But I'm sure it'll work itself out in the long-term. Somaliland is going through some serious problems as well, so even they have to go through growing-pains That's why I'm such a strong supporter of Federalism. Somalis can try whatever systems of governance that they want. As long as the Central Government stays out of the way, and stops trying to impose their will on the rest of Somalia, then I can see progress in the future. The Turks have already started working with Somaliland and Puntland. This is good news. We're already witnessing the formation of states in Jubbaland and Bay&Bakool. We just need to severely limit the power of the Central Government in Mogadishu. Building a nation-state isn't easy. It'll take time, it'll be very painful, but it will succeed inshaAllah. And we need to get rid of the poisonous generation of Somalis who grew up during the Kacaan era. And let a new generation come forward
17. @Fermi said: The idea that a woman's vagina needs to be controlled is disturbing, if not inhumane. It is also reminiscent of colonialism. "The colonization of the brown vagina", if you will. It's disgusting how they want to follow one mode of development when it came to building and developing Europe/America/Japan/South Korea But when it comes to developing and building Africa/India, they want to focus on population control. Instead of focusing on production, agricultural reform, and economic growth...these people want to focus on population control. It shows their true intentions.
18. My mistake Fermi, I was responding to the entire idea of population control in Africa. It's a very popular concept. I've heard it being advocated everywhere from university circles to actual academic journals and I wanted to respond to it.
19. Well not really. Friendships between countries can be repaired especially if the country gets itself a new President. Everyone, even the Turks and Americans know that this weak President is working against the interests of his own country. So why would anyone expect Qoslaaye to behave in an honorable manner. He has 2 years left in office. If we patiently wait it out, inshaAllah we have a President who actually has a brain and knows what he's doing, and can repair our relationship with Turkey I just want to know who it is that's whispering in Qoslaaye's ear....
20. I'm not forcing him to do anything. If you want to stay single then it's up to you. But I wouldn't recommend it. That's it
21. You're repeating yourself xabad. Yes, Africa isn't agriculturally self-sufficient. We should go through some major agricultural reforms which is what Europe went through in the 1700's. You're acting as if this situation can't be changed. China did it recently and so did India. So why can't Africa do it? You are arguing that Africans should just stop having children and use contraception and this will be the solution to our problems. That's ridiculous because we were going through the same problems in 1980, when we had less than HALF the population we have today. The problem isn't our population. The problem is failed economic policies. It's pretty clear
22. @Soloman said: One of the most irritating things about Somalis, from relatives to families and friends. It's like the most favorite pastime question that Somalis like to ask you if you reached 30 and you are not still married. FML for being the only one in my family who's still single! And hi everyone. Bro, there's no reason for a Somali man at the age of 30 who can afford to be married, being single. It makes no sense at all. You're not a child. You're a man We have different values when compared to the bachelor-types all over the United States who do nothing but attend strip clubs, date multiple girls and live a free life with no responsibilities. Your family generally wants the best for you. So if you're 20 and you're still not enrolled in school or working, then your relatives will wonder why. And if you're 30 and you're still not married even though you can afford it, then they'll wonder why.
23. Well then instead of focusing on decreasing the population, you should focus on maximizing production and making our farms more efficient. We clearly have the capacity to provide for ourselves. All of Africa does. We have some of the richest farmland in the world and if we learned how to utilize it properly we wouldn't have widespread famine
24. Clearly you fell for Malthusian propaganda which has been debunked a LONG time ago. In the 1700's, the world population was under 1 billion. This guy named Thomas Malthus believed that the world population increasing would create a shortage of food and water, and result in catastrophic famine (killing billions of people) and that food prices would increase dramatically as a result. He was wrong. The world population is now 7 billion, but food prices have dropped dramatically in the last 200 years. People are living longer, people are healthier, and people have a higher standard of living than they've ever had in their history. Why was he wrong? Because he (as most Liberals) don't understand economics. When food becomes more scarce, it becomes more expensive. As a result, businessmen seeking to make a profit start to innovate and think of ways to maximize production of food, which brings costs down. Why do you think farmers in 2014 are like 100 times more productive than farmers in 1800? Better farming practices, fertilizing, and mechanization all contributed to the drop in food prices, which allowed more people to leave the farms and start working in the cities. In 1800, most of the world's population was farmers. Even in America, most of the people worked in farms. Today, 2014...less than 2 percent of the people work in farms. The rest of the people work in the cities, doing OTHER stuff. And now the average human has access to much cheaper food when compared to his ancestors. The global poverty rate fell from 50% of the world's population in 1980.......to a 21% poverty rate in 2010. It's obviously not perfect, there are still people extremely poor today. But this fall in poverty is dramatic. The world's population increased from 4 billion in 1980 to 7 billion today, and the poverty rate FELL BIG TIME. And it's because of mechanization, maximized productivity and lowered prices. Technology and free markets literally made all of this possible. This whole bullshit about carrying capacity is revised every year. Carrying capacity only means the amount of humans the Earth can carry with a given amount of technology and investment. We're already in the process of creating vertical farms, where glass skyscrapers are constructed in major cities and inside the tall buildings, food is grown. Artificial farms grown in a skyscraper. This was unthinkable a couple generations ago. Stop falling for this Liberal B.S. They're always panicking about the global population increasing, but humans today are less wasteful than they've ever been. Food has never been cheaper, even though there are 7 billion people. Fly over Africa, fly over Somalia. You'll see literally millions of square kilometers of unused land. Empty land. Land where you can grow all sorts of fruits and vegetables. Where you can raise cattle and grow wheat. Where you can maximize production and feed the population. Somalia and Burkina Faso and all these countries just need proper economic policies. Our country can easily handle 100 million people. The bottom half of Somalia is fertile and we can definitely grow enough food to feed the population. We live in one of the emptiest countries in the world, and you wanna talk about limiting the population. Somalia is a large country with a tiny population. Give me a break.
25. @Fermi said: Somalis continue to have large families (though it is worth mentioning family size is decreasing) because of a reluctance to adopt contraception. Why in the world would Somalis want to adopt contraception? I mean, if a Somali couple wants to use birth control, then that's up to them. It's their choice. But to adopt population control as a policy, why on Earth would you want that? Somalia is an extremely underpopulated country. We are more than twice the geographic size of Germany, with less than 1/8th the population size. Just look at the population density figures. Somalia's population could increase to 100 million people and we'd still have the room and resources to accommodate more. Don't fall for this B.S. Liberal propaganda. There's enough food, water and resources for everyone in this world. We just need to learn how to utilize our resources and maximize production, while making sure that this has no adverse effects on the natural environment.
