  5. Deported from Kenya; accused of links to Ethiopian separatist group January 22, 2007 Debra Black Staff Reporter Worried family of a Canadian – deported from Kenya to Somalia because he was suspected of being a member of an Ethiopian separatist group sympathetic to Somalia's Islamist movement – are asking Ottawa to intervene as quickly as possible to secure his release. Bashir Makhtal, who lived in Toronto, was first arrested in early January in a town bordering Somalia on suspicion of financing the Union of Islamic Courts. He was held in custody in Kenya until this weekend when he was suddenly deported with about 30 other prisoners to Mogadishu. Now his cousins here fear Makhtal, believed to be about 40, will be punished and tortured because of his family's history. They say his grandfather was a freedom fighter for ethnic Somalis in eastern Ethiopia. "I can't even breathe," said Said Maktal, 35, of Hamilton, a cousin of the jailed man. Said Maktal and his brother Hussein are extremely worried about their cousin. "He's like my brother – my older brother," said Said. "Anything could happen, any minute, any second," he said. "You're dealing with a Third World country, which does not obey international law. They don't care." His fear: His cousin will be sent to Ethiopia from Somalia, where he will be executed or tortured. "A few minutes ago I was praying for him," said Said, a lab technician at a chemical company in Hamilton. "It could be any minute they put him in the hands of the Ethiopians. We haven't slept. "We're really worried about him and the situation in Ethiopia because we're ****** people," explained Said. "I'm scared that they're going to kill him at any moment. He's the grandson of Makhtal Dahir – he was a well-known person, who was trying to get freedom for his own people." "Bashir ran away from all those problems to have a better life so he could help his family." Makhtal was arrested on suspicions that he was a member of the ****** National Liberation Front, which wants to set up its own homeland for ethnic Somalis who live in the eastern part of Ethiopia. "Anybody who comes from that region can be accused of being a member or a sympathizer. In Ethiopia that is a crime," said Mohamed Aidid, chair of the ****** Somali Community Association of Ontario. News reports in Kenya said Makhtal was an alleged member of the front, an Ethiopian rebel group. The deportees – including Makhtal – were among scores of suspected Islamist fighters and supporters rounded up by Kenyan forces after a military incursion that ended the rule of Somalia's Union of Islamic Courts. In Mogadishu, the deportees were put into the custody of Ethiopian soldiers, according to government sources. "They were shackled with chains on their feet and handcuffs on their hands behind their backs," Kenyan lawyer Harun Mdubi told Reuters. "Ethiopia regards them as an enemy, so I really fear they could face the same fate as Saddam Hussein now." That's what worries Makhtal's relatives and the ****** Somali Community Association and they're begging Ottawa to help. The group sent a fax last Tuesday to the Canadian high commission in Nairobi, Kenya alerting them to Makhtal's arrest and detention. A copy of that letter was also sent to Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay. "We are very concerned as a community for the safety of our fellow Canadian," Aidid wrote. "He has been in detention for two weeks with no Canadian consular access and no access to a lawyer either ... We are writing to ... request that all efforts be dispensed to secure immediate consular access to the Canadian in distress. Canada should secure guarantees from Kenya that this Canadian will not be rendered to Ethiopia." Just after Makhtal was arrested Aidid said the association received a phone call from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service about the case. "Two guys from CSIS came to our offices. We gave them the information we had about him and they said they were eager to help him." Aidid, who had met Makhtal on several occasions, worries he may end up like Maher Arar – a Canadian who was picked up at Kennedy airport in New York and transported to Syria where he was tortured and a year later released. "But in this case we might not see him again. That's what we're afraid of. "We want the Canadian government to pressure the government to release him." Makhtal came to Canada in 1991, his cousin said. He became a Canadian citizen in 1994, according to documents he left with his cousin. He studied computer science and worked as a computer programmer for both CIBC and the Bank of Montreal. At CIBC he was a senior analyst. He returned to Somalia about four or five years ago, Said said, hoping to help support his relatives there and thought running his own business would be more financially lucrative. Makhtal was married last year. Alain Cacchione, a spokesperson for Foreign Affairs said: "Canada strongly objects to the deportation of the Canadian citizen to Somalia ..." Cacchione said Canada has been working to obtain information and consular access to Makhtal, but since he is now in Somalia, it will be difficult to intervene. With files from Reuters
  6. Sudan declines to participate in Somalia peacekeeping force Monday 22 January 2007 00:10. Printer-Friendly version Jan 21, 2007 (KHARTOUM) —Sudan has declined to participate in the African peacekeeping force to Somalia, saying priority must be given to the realization of peace in the country. Sudan’s President Omar Hassan al-Bashir ® meets with Somali Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi in Khartoum, January 21, 2007. (Reuters)Following a meeting on Sunday between Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir and the visiting Somali prime minister Ali Mohamed Gedi, the State Minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ali Kerti, told the press that any foreign troops that are to be deployed n Somalia will be targeted by the Somali Islamists militia. He further said that Sudan prefers to focus efforts on the realization of the peace in Somalia. The Sudanese official added that the Somali Government has changed its request from participation in the AU peacekeeping force to send forces to train the Somali Army, Police and Security forces as well as the civil administration. The Somali Prime Minister had urged Sudan on Saturday during a meeting with the second Sudanese vice-president to resume its diplomatic representation in Mogadishu and also to participate in the AU peacekeeping force to Somalia. The African force would protect transitional federal institutions, and maintain security in the county. Al-Bashir affirmed to the Somali premier Sudan’s firm stance in maintaining the unity, security and stability of Somalia. He further affirmed the necessity of bringing together the Somali parties around the negotiating table toward achieving of political, security and social peace. Upon the request of the Somali Prime Minister, President Al-Bashir voiced Sudan’s readiness to continue its efforts to bring together the Somali parties as well as pushing forward the peaceful dialogue process, the state-run SUNA reported. On Friday 19 January, Gedi had reportedly rejected out of hand any mediation between his government and the deposed Islamic Courts Union on his arrival in Sudan. President al-Bashir further pledged to support Somalia in the domains of education, services and capacity building and training of Somali army and police as well as re-opening the Sudanese Embassy in Mogadishu besides direct material support to Somalia. The Sudanese state minister explained that the Somali government agreed on continuation by Sudan of its mediation as well as resumption of the Somali talks. In March 2005, the African Union has authorized IGAD — which comprises Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda — to send peacekeepers to Somalia to help the country’s transitional government get a foothold there when it eventually relocates from exile in Nairobi. Forces from Uganda and Sudan were supposed to form the vanguard of a 7500 strong regional peacekeeping mission to Somalia, at that time and after. But Somali warlord and Islamic courts opposition to deploying troops from neighboring Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Kenya has been fierce. In December 2006, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a US-drafted resolution backing plans to dispatch a regional peacekeeping force in Somalia to prop up the wobbly transitional government there. Since the control of the country by the Ethiopian backed Somali government forces the onoing project is to broaden the African forces to others force from another countries like South African Nigeria and Rwanda. 7. TPLF invading Army’s flight from Somalia By Staff Jan 20, 2007, 16:51 The TPLF regime's invading troops in Somalia , unable to withstand the popular opposition to their presence, were forced into a hasty retreat or a disgraced flight to be exact, after suffering the loss of thousands of soldiers including ranking officers. Ever since setting feet on Somali territory, the TPLF troops had been alarmed and bewildered by the forceful opposition from the Somali people. Now, as these invading troops are attempting a hasty retreat, more than 500 U.S navy soldiers have entered Somalia to provide cover and ensure a safe retreat for the TPLF soldiers. The fact that Somalia will only be a deadly quagmire for the TPLF was quite clear from the onset because history had proven time and again that it is impossible to defeat a united people. The world had witnessed that even the so-called U.S supremacy could not override people's sovereignty, let alone the pitiful TPLF regime, hovering on the verge of its demise. The aggression against Iraq and Afghanistan and their aftermath are a living testimony to this fact. The Meles regime sent troops into Somalia not due to overconfidence in its own military might but rather gambled with the lives of Ethiopian youths so as to serve as a tool for world superpowers, as well as collect payment for its subservience and receive a medallion for voluntary enslavement. Another factor that had prompted the regime to invade Somali was to relieve some of the mounting tension at home by finding distraction elsewhere. However, this ill devised folly has exacerbated rather than eased the regime's anxiety. It is not hard either to imagine that, the TPLF regime's disgraceful defeat and massive loss in Somalia will only serve as an additional push towards its demise.

  11. Mogadishu gunmen turn up 'Somali music' 19 Jan 2007 11:13:00 GMT 19 Jan 2007 11:13:00 GMT The price of guns is usually a good indication of what's happening in local conflicts. In the past few days, demand for weapons has soared in Mogadishu's Bakara arms market, Britain's Independent newspaper reports. Before you could pick up a rocket-propelled grenade launcher for just $400. Now you won't get change from $1,000. And AK-47s are flying off the shelves. "The Islamic Courts are arming now," one trader tells the newspaper. For six months, under the strict but stable rule of the Islamists, who purged squabbling warlords from the city, Mogadishu enjoyed a period of relative peace. The country director of Muslim Aid told me he'd been able to cut the number of armed guards protecting the office to five, compared with 17 in more risky times. The streets were calmer and aid workers could move around more easily - even without an armed escort sometimes. But Mogadishu's respite from violence now appears to be over. Locals have a euphemistic name for the gunfire that rings out across the city, providing what the Independent describes as "a constant soundtrack to life in Mogadishu". They call it "Somali music". And someone's been cranking up the volume over the past few nights, the Independent reports. The presence of the weak interim government in Mogadishu for the first time since it was installed in 2004, and tentative efforts to disarm and negotiate with warlords, haven't yet translated into a safer environment for the citizens of Mogadishu. The Independent warns that an insurgency has kicked off against Ethiopian troops, whose military muscle allowed the government to defeat the Islamists. Members of a radical Islamic group called al-Shabaab have popped up again on the streets of Mogadishu with plans to ambush Ethiopian and Somali soldiers, the paper reports. Although Ethiopia is due to withdraw its forces soon, a leaflet has been distributed saying the Ethiopian "colonialists" will "face new insurgent operations and attacks". The official line on the Islamists is that they've fled south and are hiding out near the Kenyan border, around Ras Kamboni. But it seems some are back and gearing up for a guerilla campaign in Mogadishu. That's unlikely to improve living conditions for Mogadishu's war-weary residents. The Independent points out that life has barely changed for poverty-stricken Somalis. Whether it's the warlords, the Islamists or the government, there's no work - meaning precious little money to buy food. "I can't predict who is good. They are all alike. They do not create a society," Nasato Saciid, a 25-year-old mother of four, tells the newspaper. A U.N. envoy said on Thursday Somalia had its best chance for peace in 16 years, and it shouldn't be wasted. But the optimism of politicians and diplomats isn't echoed by ordinary Somalis, who see no let up in their daily struggle to feed and educate their kids. "It is a very hard life and I don't expect it to get any better," Saciid says in the Independent.

  18. Gunfire rings out from presidential compound in Somali capital Posted 1/19/2007 1:48 PM ET E-mail | Save | Print | Subscribe to stories like this MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — Government troops battled gunmen who attacked the Somali president's palace in central Mogadishu Friday night, spreading panic around the capital. The attackers fired three mortars into the presidential compound and then engaged guards in a 30-minute firefight, residents said. The president and prime minister were in Mogadishu, but their whereabouts were unclear and government officials did not immediately answer their phones. Khadra Dahir Osman, who lives next to the presidential compound, which occupies a hill overlooking Mogadishu, said he fled to his brother's home, panic-stricken. The internationally recognized government — with key military backing from Ethiopia — had managed to drive an Islamic movement that had challenged it for power out of Mogadishu and much of the rest of southern Somalia. But the potential for violence remains great because of clan rivalries, resentment of the government's Ethiopian backers and a threat of guerrilla war from remnants of the Islamic movement. Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi arrived in Mogadishu Dec. 29, a day after the Islamic movement's fighters abandoned the capital. President Abdullahi Yusuf arrived Jan. 8. Since then, their government has struggled to restore order to a capital that has known little but chaos and violence for decades. Copyright 2007 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. 21. Mortars hit Somalia's presidential palace Friday January 19, 06:35 PM MOGADISHU (Reuters) - At least two mortars slammed into Somalia's presidential palace on Friday night as explosions and gunfire rocked Mogadishu in the latest outbreak of violence in chaotic Somalia, witnesses and officials said. "I can confirm two mortars have hit Villa Somalia," a senior government source told Reuters, of the building where President Abdullahi Yusuf stays. "We do not have word yet if there were casualties or (Advertisement) not." More than a dozen explosions boomed across Mogadishu and gunfire rattled out to break a lull in the violence of several days in the coastal capital of the Horn of Africa nation. "I have heard more than a dozen explosions ... now there is gunfire," said Reuters reporter Sahal Abdulle. Ethiopian troops, who helped the Somali interim government drive Islamists out of Mogadishu over the New Year, have in past days been the target of attacks from unknown groups. Suspicion has fallen on remnants of the defeated Islamists, who vowed to launch guerrilla strikes against the Ethiopians whom they regard as illegitimate occupiers of Somalia. Two former Islamists told Reuters earlier on Friday they had infiltrated Mogadishu again and planned to attack Villa Somalia and other targets. Yusuf came to Mogadishu just days ago to take up residence in the already bullet- and mortar-scarred building. It was not known if the 72-year-old former soldier was in the compound during Friday's attack. Addis Ababa wants to pull its troops out of neighbouring Somalia within days. But analysts say that risks leaving a power vacuum that could see the Horn of Africa nation slide back into anarchy. The African Union is trying to muster a peacekeeping force.

Here are the possible peacekeepers for Somalia. 8,000-strong force proposed: Uganda: 1,500 troops offered, subject to parliamentary approval Tanzania: Considering Nigeria: Considering Rwanda: Considering South Africa: Considering but forces stretched
  23. US Hides True Intentions in Somalia a Statement By Canadian Peace Alliance January 19, 2007 The US has launched attacks against southern Somalia with airstrikes from helicopters and AC-130 gunships. Reports say that dozens of people are dead. The official justification for the attack was to kill an alleged Al-Qaeda cell in the country. As with Iraq, where the links between Saddam Hussein and the Al-Qaeda network were never established this new assault is another attempt to disguise US interests behind the convenient bogeyman of terrorism. There is no proof that Al-Qaeda is working with the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) who are the real threat to US interests in the region and the main target of this assault. Somalia, after years of lawlessness and the rule of clan warlords, finally achieved peace when the ICU entered the scene and took most of the country by July of 2006. For most Somalis the ICU victory represented the first steps to peace in more than 15 years. In Mogadishu, a city described as one of the most violent places on earth, shops were opened, the airport was in operation after 5 years and the port re-opened after 8 years. Freedom of mobility was now an option. The business community welcomed the new regime, as did the population. On June 18, a hundred thousand Somalis rallied in Mogadishu carrying signs reading "Support The Islamic Courts Union" and "America Open Your Eyes - Down with the Warlord Government". The US could not allow this to happen. The mass media in Canada, always fearful of context in their reporting, has said that the US was concerned about the development of an Islamic government. This statement conveniently misses the fact that the US is quite supportive of Islamic governments in places like Saudi Arabia. What they were really concerned with is a government hostile to US interests in such a strategic location as the horn of Africa, at the mouth of the Red Sea and the gateway to the Suez Canal and the Middle East. The fact that oil deposits have recently been discovered in Somalia was an added incentive for US intervention. The ICU is also a threat to the US interests for the ideas that it represents. The fact that the ICU has been able to lead a country, divided along clan lines, and create a unified opposition to the US-supported Interim government is a threat in itself. But the fact that these formerly disparate groups have been unified under the banner of Islam with a non-sectarian leadership is even more damaging to the US plan for division of the Middle East along sectarian lines. On July 20th, Ethiopian troops entered the southern Somali town of Baidoa to support Abdullahi Yusuf, a former warlord leader and the hand-picked president of the UN-sponsored interim government. Ethiopia, a firm US ally in the region and recipient of massive amounts of US military aid, was quick to act. Snatching war from the jaws of peace, the US and its local puppet regimes have once again condemned the people to violence and chaos. Somalia was not a failed state except while under the Interim Government which never enjoyed the support of the people. After the UN Security Council passed resolution 1752 calling for foreign intervention in Somalia, thousands once again demonstrated in Mogadishu stadium under the banner "Why Do We Need Foreign Intervention When Somalia Is In Peace"? The parallels between Somalia and Afghanistan are numerous. In both cases a US backed warlord government is being opposed by the people of the country because of growing popular discontent with constant violence and instability. Either way US meddling has once again destroyed the chance of peace and self-determination for the people of Somalia. This is yet another aggressive act by the US which further threatens to destabilize the Horn of Africa and the Middle East. The peace movement calls on the government of Canada to condemn this action by the US and its regional allies, oppose any foreign intervention, and work for genuine self-determination for the people of Somalia. 24. "If not, the government and the Ethiopian forces will suffer heavily, as the resistance is growing day by day." Very dissapointed to see the remaining Ethiopians are leaving alive.
