Somali police convoy attacked SUNDAY, JANUARY 28, 2007 Three people have been killed after armed men attacked a convoy transporting Mogadishu's police chief, according to residents. On Sunday, fighters opened fire on the convoy as it drove through the Somali capital, witnesses said. Mohamed Hussein, a local shopkeeper, said: "I heard a big explosion ... I saw uniformed police exchanging fire with gunmen in civilian clothes." Jama Nour, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Mogadishu, said it had not been confirmed that the armed men were from the Islamic Courts Union. Witnesses told Nour that the armed men were young people from the local neighbourhood and that government and Ethiopian troops were regularly attacked there. Nour said: "We found a dead young man who was killed during the clashes. Some youngsters were dragging him, saying he is a policeman but ... a spokesman for the government affirmed that one policeman was injured. "Witnesses at the scene affirmed that seven people have been injured during the fighting and another three, including the policeman, have been killed." The ambush is the latest in a series on Somali government and Ethiopian forces and follows an attack on two police stations in Mogadishu. Grenade attack Seven people were injured when gunmen fired rocket-propelled grenades at two police stations in Mogadishu and fired machine-guns at officers stationed outside. According to an Arab Language Newspaper published in the Gulf State of Qatar they have received reports from both Arab and Western Diplomats that US troops are currently missing in the southern part of Somalia. Late last year US Special Forces and Marines were known to have been training in Northeastern Kenya. It should be noted that the Muslim Population in that part of the country were highly suspicious of US goals and agenda while there. While in the region US forces sought to repair schools and provide Medical Care to the destitute. Muslim tribesmen felt that the US was conducting an intel OP to see who was trying to cross the border into Somalia. When the Somali Transitional National Government along with Ethiopian Assistance put the Union of Islamic Courts to flight there were several movements by the US Military. Two warships moved close to the Somali coastline to interdict any attempt by the UIC to flee the region by sea. They were later augmented by the Eisenhower Battle Group. It was also reported that US Special Forces also assisted Kenyan Forces in closing the land crossings with Somalia. So far this month the US has launched two air strikes on purported terrorist sites in Somalia. Oxfam stated that at least 70 nomads were killed in one air strike. This report has not been confirmed however by either Central Command or the Pentagon. So the question that they have been taken hostage in revenge of the Air Strikes cannot at this time be discounted as a revenge mission by angry and distraught people. Recently the US Ambassador to Kenya met with the leader of the defeated mission. The purpose was to ascertain both the status and the whereabouts of the missing American Soldiers. It was also urged that the leader of the UIC return to Somalia to take part in a Unity Government. Such unpredictable and unpleasant quandary makes all of us wonder where we are heading and what the future holds for an ordinary Somali yearning for better, secure and stable country. Transitional Federal Government (TFG) leaders, indeed, pursued perilous policy path that could lead us to fiasco and a recipe for further disaster. The invasion of Ethiopian troops to our homeland is arguably the greatest of all the maladies that bedevil Somali nation. It was very clear from the outset that Ethiopian intervention and invasion was imminent and the election of Abdillahi Yusuf as interim president heralded the current situation of our country occupied by Ethiopian troops. It was incident waiting to happen and a golden opportunity knocked their door when an Islamic Court Union group emerged into the political landscape of Somalia and regrettably took hasty decisions that resulted in their demise. It was a matter of time and TFG wasted not a minute to call their protector and patron and this reminds me about our Somali saying “ Meel aan rabey roob ma igu Eryey”. I never thought, in my wildest dreams, that I’d ever see Ethiopians not only occupying and flexing their military muscle mercilessly and vigorously to our people but are also roaming the country and putting in place an insidious plan to achieve their lifetime goal. Americans and Ethiopians are in cahoots working together to undertake common strategic mission. Consequently, the Ethiopians have received the license to kill and it is like an open season for hunting. As tragic as it sounds for majority of Somalis with some sense of nationalism and patriotism, it is unfortunately a triumph and victory for few supporters of this moribund TFG government that are driven by clannish politics. Hitherto, I have been refraining myself from plunging into foray of Somali politics while I am living at the heart of Nugal Valley gracefully tending my herd of camel that are far and away from clear and present danger facing my other brothers at lower Jubba Region. However, I am coming around this time to divulging the full extent of my feeling of vexation and frustration directed towards the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) leading team in general and to the president in particular. It is my personal and naïve opinion that the interim president has been, is and will be the bane of the Somali People and I would like to substantiate my claim in the following few assertions that are based on factual statements. However, I should point out in crystal clear that it is not my intention to taint the reputation of elected transitional government leaders but it is an honest and sobering assessment of those leaders by re-examining some of their recent political remarks, actions and moves that are nationally and morally repugnant to say the least. Our Interim president has set precedence in our nation as being the first Somali political dissident who sought alliance from our century old foe and established launching base in Ethiopia and attacked nowhere else other than his home base of Mudug and not the heart of the Siad Barre Regime. It is hard to swallow and trust someone whose personal lust of power could even drive him to kill his own sons and brothers. Our President is a man well-known for his proclivities toward military interventions and use of coercive force can not stabilize our country. Ethiopian presence is definitely driving wedge against the Somali people. Our leader is one of the wolves that plunged our country into abyss, anarchy and anguish and turned our beautiful country into a living hell. Arguably, Mr Yusuf is part and parcel of the warlord syndrome in our country and was instrumental in spearheading and establishing SSRC group responsible for the total collapse of previous transitional national government. The re-emergence of the warlords, though incapacitated, is still indicative of his association with these wolves. Other leaders of the TFG are characterized by ineptitude, incompetence and inability to govern and forge policy of reconstruction and reconciliation to resuscitate the shattered state. The current PM had no prior political experience and looked clean but he was a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The controversial foreign minister with his tendencies towards venality is worrisome. Quite recently, he has made incongruent remarks regarding the C-130 bombing of Lower Jubba region conflicted with earlier statement of his president who stated naively his lack of knowledge of the air assault to his country and his people. Even worse, adding insult to an injury, both of them stated their support and justified the American air attack notwithstanding the loss of innocent lives of our people and their livestock. To put my perspective in a nutshell, lack of leadership has been and is still at the core of myriad of problems facing our country. We are betrayed by our leaders who appear to have narrow vision mystified by petty considerations. Presently, we cannot afford to let those with shallow insight and short memory to put our country into further perils and problems. I hope the president calls quit and resigns as soon as possible before our victimized nomads accuse him for national treason or crime against his own people.

Somalia Capital Rocked By Violence After Church Attack MOGADISHU, SOMALIA — Christians in Somalia remained on edge Friday, January 26, after a church attack and fresh reports that five people were killed in clashes in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. A British Broadcasting Corporation Correspondent saw three bodies with gunshot wounds lying in waste ground and witnesses said they saw two more bodies elsewhere in the city. Four people were also injured in mortar attacks, the BBC said. Insecurity, including attacks against Christians, increased in and around the capital since the ousting of Islamists last month. Friday’s violence came after human rights investigators confirmed that a Muslim gunman opened fire on Somali house church where Christians were worshipping, seriously injuring the church leader. The January 2 attack happened in the Southern town of Tayeglow, 320 kilometers (200 miles) from the capital, Mogadishu, said the human rights group, International Christian Concern (ICC) with website www.persecution.org. SECURITY REASONS The leader of the house church, ICC identified only as “S” for security reasons, was reportedly hit by gunfire several times and assumed dead for about an hour before he regained consciousness. "He is currently seeking medical care and his status is critical. The gunman is reportedly still threatening other Christians in the surrounding area," ICC added. ICC linked the attack to recent clashes when Ethiopian troops assisted the provisional Somali government in pushing back the powerful Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) which had taken over and imposed Sharia, or Islamic law, in much of Southern Somalia. "The desire to oppress Christianity existed long before Ethiopia put pressure on Somalia, and this house church attack is a red flag for an increase in violence and persecution for Christian believers in the Horn of Africa,” ICC President Jeff King said in a statement obtained by BosNewsLife. ETHIOPIAN FORCES "Even though the UIC took a thorough beating from Ethiopian forces, it does not mean they have disappeared or have no lingering influence," King added. Ethiopia and Somalia have been engaged in two other wars in the past. "For many Somalis, Ethiopia is the enemy and because most Somalis are Muslim, and Ethiopia is considered Christian, Somalis view Christians as enemies also," ICC said. Although the UIC is not currently in power, Christian observers say the combination of fresh "anti-Ethiopian sentiment" and the last ten years of civil and governmental chaos will likely worsen the situation for Somali Christians. American soldiers seized in southern Somalia, Arab and Western diplomats say Aweys Osman Yusuf Mogadishu 26, Jan.07 ( Sh.M.Network) There have been mounting reports that number of American soldiers was missing in southern Somalia following the recent US air operations on the Islamist and al-Qaeda hideouts in southern jungles of the country, alsharqa, an Arabic newspaper based in Qatar reported on Friday. The paper also reported that Kenyan police have seized armed Asians crossing from Somalia into the Kenyan border. The Kenyan police believe the foreigners were fighting alongside with Somalia's defeated Islamists. According to the paper, Arab diplomats, who have asked anonymity, confirmed that unspecified number of US foot soldiers was seized in southern Somalia where Islamists are believed to be hiding after their loss of the capital Mogadishu to the UN and internationally backed transitional government of Somalia and the Ethiopian troops in the country. Western diplomats, who have not been named, also affirmed that US soldiers were missing in southern Somalia, Alsharqa reported. It added that Michael Ranneberger, the US ambassador to Kenya, who met with Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, the defeated Islamist leader under the Kenyan custody, has asked Ahmed to explain where the missing Americans are lingering. Ranneburger has reportedly made the efforts to convince Ahmed to go back to Somalia and take part in a unity government election, which he said, would be held in Somalia next year. He said Sharif could achieve a high government post in the upcoming government election. Meanwhile Kenyan police, who asked to remain anonymous, have confirmed to Alsharqa that they caught two foreign fighters armed AK47s between the Kenyan and Somalia border. The date of the capture was not specified, however. Kenyan security forces are stationed at the Kenyan border along with Somalia to clutch the escaping Islamists and al-Qaeda operatives given a safe heaven in Somalia by the Islamic Courts Union. US ambassador Ranneburger, who spoke to Shabelle on 20 January, said the Islamists were harboring al-Qaeda operatives who were exerting control of the Islamic Courts. Islamists always denied they had al-Qaeda operatives in their Islamic party while in control of the strife-torn country. According to Kenyan Times, Kenyan authorities have arrested five people, including a U.S. citizen and a French citizen suspected to be fighters for Somalia's outdone Islamist movement, on Friday.

Somali Islamists deny Ethiopian troops withdrawal Friday 26 January 2007 00:10. Jan 25, 2007 (MOGADISHU) - The Somali Islamists militias said they have completed their preparations for war against the Ethiopian troops. The ousted Islamic courts, also, denied the withdrawal of the Ethiopian army describing it as public relation operation. According to the Somali pro-Islamist website KismaayoNews, the Islamists militias have appointed a new war commander meant to operate only in Banaadir Region, Mogadishu and its environs. The new commander is known as Sheikh Abdiqadir. The website mentioned it will not give the full name for security reasons. The new commander has regrouped together all the former Islamic courts forces which have been in shambles since Ethiopian captured the country. The first trial operation by the new commander was carried out yesterday when the forces attacked Mogadishu International Airport. "Yesterday's attack was a trial by Commander Sheikh Abdiqadir who wanted to see the possibility of attacking the most protected area in Mogadishu by the Ethiopian troops in broad daylight," an unidentified speaker told Kismaayonews. When asked whom they were targeting in their upcoming attacks as the Ethiopians would soon be leaving the country, the unidentified speaker said: "The Tigrayans are not going anywhere. This story of leaving the country is merely 'public relations'. We are engaging the Tigrayans in a war that would return back to their country so that Prime Minister Meles Zenawi will never rule Ethiopia where he is currently colonizing over 70 million people. "There will be no more foreign troops that will arrive in Somalia. At the moment, we are engaged in a war with the two enemies of Somalia; the USA and the Ethiopians" he said. "They have now been joined by Kenya. The Islamic courts forces are at the moment discussing how to deal with Kenya," the speaker added. This new mobilization by the people of Banaadir Region is going on simultaneously with the war of the mujahidiins in the Jubba regions in southern Somalia where they are inflicting heavy losses on the enemy as the courts' administration and capability are largely found in these regions. The Islamic courts forces, which had been controlling the southern port city, Kismayo, before they were ousted by Ethiopian troops.
