I would say your assumptions are more or less accurate. Though Somalis, at this point in our civilization, are skeptical of a lot of things that may be deemed 'beneficial', which is why we are in urgent need of 'social engineering'. Perhaps once these engineers come and do there job, there will be a job for you Freud. I know Khat is not cocaine, but it is certainly close! And here lies the predicament for those of us who are passionate about the field, and would consider taking it to a graduate level of study. It would be a terrible feeling to return home with the hope of doing your part and having ur knowledge scoffed at by the very people u came to help.
  2. Saffz, I haven't watched this doc yet, but how receptive do you think Somalis are to psychological interventions? I get the feeling that they believe therapy based on psychological methods to either be a pseudoscience or even worse a 'gaalo' field/treatment.

A hundred years from now Godane will be looked at like the Mad Mullah of his generation whether people today like it or not. How do u manage to inject Arabs into every topic? And how do I think we are like Arabs? Arabs are not known for being excellent warriors like Somalis.
  5. I've noticed that all foreign commando operations fail in Somalia. Black hawk down, the French commando embarrasment of last year and now this even more embarassing U.S.Navy Seal failure. One things for sure, Somalis know how to fight.

  7. Rahima;981010 wrote: So do you believe that the man/husband has the final say despite undertaking a consultative process? Or is it more appropriate that on issues that a husband and wife disagree on they take the middle ground? The reason that i ask is because it seems that you guys are advocating for a dictatorial approach- the "yes i will consult her but ultimately she must remember that i wear the pants and i get the final say" kind of hadal. It depends on the issue. But in general the husband should steer the direction of the ship. That's what Islam teaches...unless we have a skeletal Islam with no real dictates, and we just selectively patch on the meat (the real substance) however we see fit to suit the prevailing norms of our times (which is currently unfettered feminism).

  9. Rahima;980901 wrote: So haatu when you say men wear the pants what exactly do you mean? You don't think such language is against Islam? Do you not think that you are degrading women with such a statement? It's not exactly calling for what Islam teaches is it? Islam advocates a consultative approach to marriage and the household, not one based on dictatorial outlooks like "i wear the pants". Sure the husband may be the head of the household but not in the sense you boys are describing. Remember that one of the last warning of the Prophet s.a.w was to be mindful of the rights of women- be careful guys as our right to be involved in the decision making of our homes is one of our many rights. As for women in politics, even if we accept that such a political system is acceptable in Islam, the position the hadith refers to is that equivalent to the leader, not ministerial positions. Finally a girl who gets it. No one is calling for a dictatorship in the household. Soomaali baanu nahay oo Illaahay Carab iyo Hindi controlling ah inagama dhigin.

I'm curious to see what he'll look like after he retires from competitive running and puts on some weight. I agree. He's in such a demanding sport, and a couple of extra pounds would literally destroy his carreer. Have u seen his twin brother who lives back home?
