DoctorKenney;945412 wrote: Lol I completely agree with Chimera. Too many times in my life I had to escort female relatives and friends home because of these punks and thugs. Safferz, I'm sure you can agree that young black men who fit this profile commit disproportionately more crime than their white or Asian counterparts. I've encountered police many times in my life, and never was I stopped and frisked because I behave (and dress) in a certain way. And you make it look like every single black man in NYC is searched, when its probably the same young man who are stopped and searched multiple times in one year. Safferz, I'm sure you--living in the United States--have seen and met these types of men, and you would agree that they're mostly intolerable thugs. I mean, what else should be done with them?? DoctorKenney, I was consistenly searched and frisked, at times agressively so, by police officers in my own neighbourhood. All of these times I was dressed 'normally' and engaging in non-suspicious and non-threatening activies. I was harassed while playing basketball, on my way to visit neighbours, on the way to the store and even one time as I was about to get into a friends car on my way to the masjid. loool. Wallahi I can't even count the number of times I've been stopped and frisked by cops while growing up. Numerous times I put them in their place, with some seeming somewhat apologetic and remorseful while others just became more obstinate and hateful.

Safferz;945405 wrote: Sigh. Who are "they" and what makes "them" so threatening that civil liberties can be suspended for illegal and humiliating stop and frisks? How does one "look suspicious"? I don't understand how you can justify the treatment that young man in the video received, particularly as a black man yourself . Cognitive dissonance would only describe his state of mind if he persisted in his support of racial profiling of black men even after witnessing himself or others who fit his 'nonsuspicious' mold being harassed arbitrarily. At this point his point of view is presumabley consistent with what he has actually seen play out in reality, thus precluding the anxiety, frustation and uneasiness borne out of conflicting cognitions/beliefs.

SomaliPhilosopher;944736 wrote: Wadani, how about the Arab man? Y is it that somalis assume anything we think, anything we wear, how we look, every damn thing that is associated with us has to have a foreign origin. Bro, Somalis have the capacity to think on their own, make appraisals and create racial and ethnic hierarchies without internalizing the hierarchies of others (Arabs/Europeans). I find this a peculiarly Somali issue. They make themselves second class citizens in their own history and in their own achievements. You'll see Somalis brag about not being enslaved by whites or arabs, when in fact it was Somalis themselves who were enslaving other Affricans, keeping some and selling most to the Arabs. This isn't an acheivenment or anything, but just an example of how low the current generation of Somalis think of themselves. We have lost our collective self-esteem as a people. Another example is the skin bleaching epidemic among Somali women being attributed to self-hate as a result of internalizing euro-centric standards of beauty. But Somalis have always thought lighter skin in Women was attractive. Just read poetry that is two centuries old. Studies have shown that the vast majority of ethnic groups in the world prize a lighter complexion in their woman, even ethnicites living in remote corners of the world who have not seen whites/arabs or even been exposed to Western media.

SomaliPhilosopher;944726 wrote: Phenotype vs Genotype Phenotype= physical appearance (external). Genotype= the genetic make up (internal). Xabad is trying to get at though we may look Black, we do not have the genetic make up of a black man. It is his form of expression of the inferiority complex brought upon the colonized man . Somalis have always thought themseles different/superior to other Africans before the White Man came to Africa.

U should also visit Awaare.

Tallaabo;944281 wrote: Alle ha u naxariisto president Cabdi Raxmaan Cali Tuur. Another interesting fact about the people of Somaliland is their amazing resolve to safeguard their hard-won independence no matter what. When president Tuur who was very influential and respected by the general public, the SNM, and his large clan changed his mind on Somaliland's independence and went to Xamar, suddenly every man, woman, soldier, and child in Somaliland regardless of their clan gave him the middle finger and lined behind AUN president Cigaal. President Tuur's legacy should be a good lesson to the Koonfurians and teach them that it is not the politicians, the professors, or the warlords who control Somaliland and have the last say, but instead it is the ordinary man and woman on the streets. Win the people's trust and goodwill and you win Somaliland, simple as that. Huh? Did u forget dagaalkii maryo-aloolka?

Safferz;944416 wrote: I didn't say colonialism, and I don't think the widespread belief in the Arabness of Somalis' as a denial of their blackness/Africanness is that innocent either. Our first encounter with Europeans was with the Portuguese in the 16th century (who wrote about Somalis as "Moors" in Africa), which is a long time for ideas of race to develop and configure themselves within the Somali imagination. That's a romanticized trope too Damn u.

Safferz;944386 wrote: haha yes but I think we internalized that bs from Europeans. There isn't a single Muslim society in the world that doesn't claim (or have a segment of their population claim) descent from the Prophet or the Sahaba, but not many of them are the self-loathing black Africans we are. Actually it predates colonialism. And Somalis of yore were anything but self-loathing. Their belief in being Arab didn't stem from an inferiority complex (which many many Somalis suffer from nowadays), but they just really believed in the myths of descent from Arab patriarchs. The protoypical Somali of even two generations ago was very proud, fierce and independent.

Safferz;944380 wrote: Why do you need a theory? All of these theories emerge from racists and Somalis themselves who are surprised that people who look like us are Africans. We are indigenous to the Horn.

xabad;944219 wrote: so where did somalis come from safferz in your opinion ? i for one will not discount that theory, because as more scientists have delved into our genetic roots it's become clear somalis have a substantial Eurasian input. could be that this migrants settled in the peninsula and intermingled with inhabitants whom they assimilated and subsumed. Xabad, we are part of the greater Cushitic peoples that are indigenous to the Horn/East Africa. Genetic tests have proven that Somalis have a negligible amount of admixture. In fact most current scientists and researchers are of the opinion the middle easterners and europeans got their soft and defined physical features from us and not the other way around. Think about this Xabad. We've all seen those Somalis who are tall, lanky, very dark skinned, incredibly soft hair, with extremely well-defined and chiseled facial features. This personally happens to be my favourite Somali look. Anyway, can u think of any mix that can logically produce such a look? Arab + Bantu? Nope. Arab + Cushitic Horner? Nope. Arab + Horner + Bantu? Nope. Even add some sort of Hindi in the mix and this particular look, which is only seen among the Afar and Somalis and very rarely among the Oromo, will not be produced. As for the myth of SNMers and D-block being descended from Shaikh Isxaaq and Shaikh Jabarti....well lets say it's true for sake of arguement. How can two Arabs change the ethnic composition of an entire region? Their children would marry locals (horners), and then their children would marry locals, and then their children would marry locals all the way down to the present. As an SNMer the amount of Arab blood in me from Shaikh Isxaaq is 0.00000001% by now. So i'm definitely not Arab nor any mix thereof, or of anything else for that matter.

Tallaabo;944043 wrote: Brother Chimera I love your ideals but to be honest with you I along with Xaaji Xunjuf and about 4 million other folks don't want to go back to the past (the former Somali republic). We believe that entity should be left alone to rest in peace:) Don't speak for all of us bro. I believe most Somalilanders, including myself, would love the be a part of the Somalia Chimera envisions, but are only hardcore about their belief in seccession because to them a 'Chimerian' Somalia seems currently unacheivable.

Safferz;943736 wrote: Isn't it presumptuous to assume you know what I know or who I know? Wadani, the question here is how do you not know this when her family is among the noted Somali Christian families as I mentioned (and there are at least 20-30 well known, historical families) and why is the onus on me to prove their existence to you? i have enough faith in ur integrity to presume that u wouldnt spread such a pernicious rumour. So at this point i'm no longer challenging u as much as I'm just curious of how or from whom u came to know of this.

Safferz;943696 wrote: This is not true at all. Somali Christians are a minority, but they certainly exist and have for centuries, and many Somali families of note have been/are Christians (ie. Michael Mariano, Peter Raymond, Anthony James, Edna Aden, etc). I have a number of Christian relatives. loool @ Edna Aden. I don't think shes still Christian. I'm not even sure she ever was. Even though anything is possible this sounds like the usual sheeko beeralay of Somalis. I heard she even made Hajj recently.
