Memories from Somalia-Part one by Adriano Gallo Tuesday, July 12, 2011 My name is Adriano Gallo and I was born in Mogadishu the capital of Italian Somaliland in 1950, my family had immigrated to Italian Somaliland in 1910 from the Tuscany province in Italy, we had established 4 fruit plantations in the lower Jubba region, the Italian government was promoting masse immigration by italian farmers to the new Somali colony, it was described in advertisements as a tropical paradise, where lush farm areas and compatible climate awaited all Italians. By 1940 more than 50000 Italians were living in Italian Somaliland. My family lived in a beautiful house in Mogadishu’s Kasa Popolare neighbourhood, my father was often not home he worked for the most in our farms in the Lower Jubba regions; I loved to work with my father in our farms, so many adventures .You could meet snakes and lions, elephants and crocodiles, and an amazing landscape. It was nice to be away from the usual busy Mogadishu. Majority of the farm workers was Somalis and I played as child with their children, we were all so ethnical different but was enjoying what was in our eyes our common motherland. In 1960 Somalia got its independence, there was a goodbye party for the Italian governor in Villa Somalia 4 days before Somalia got its independence, my family was invited and there was hundreds of guests, I had brought a blue Somali national flag or Mandeeq as Somalis called it. Then as they innocent child I was, I ran around screaming ” freedom for Somalis” on Italian while celebrating the flag that shocked majority of the guests. 30000 out of 40000 Italians left Somalia in 1960; they didn’t feel comfortable living in an independent Somalia. http://www.hiiraan.com/op4/2011/july/19424/memories_from_somalia_part_one.aspx

Peter Bern Tuesday, October 19, 2010 I arrived with my family in Mogadishu, November 1984, I was 15 years old and was looking forward to all the experiences that awaited me in Somalia, my father was sent as an engineer from the West German government as part of West Germany's aid to Somalia . We got a nice house in the Hodan neighborhood in Mogadishu, Mogadishu was so peaceful that one could walk at night without fearing anything, the women’s were modern and well dressed, Mogadishu was one of the world's most beautiful cities, the city also had world-class universities, and there was no garbage on the streets. I was sent on "American School of Mogadishu," which was an international school for foreign children, after school, we all used to go to the Lido beach, it was a paradise! Our Somali neighbors in Hodan was incredible friendly and tolerant, they made it easier for us to get used to Somalia, I became friends with many of the children in the Hodan area, I never learned to speak Somali, although my Somali friends tried hard. On weekend’s we visited Hotel Al-Uruba who had a good nightclub, Mogadishu had generally a dynamic nightlife. Often my family went with our neighbors to go to the farms between Mogadishu and Kismayio, it was a paradise! My family was Catholic and every Sunday we used to go to the largest Catholic Church in Africa which was in Mogadishu, right next to a mosque. Every Wednesday the European boys were selling cookies around Mogadishu, our cake was bad, but the Somalis used to buy them not to hurt us. But when the European club members ran marathon race through Mogadishu, the Somalis though that we were crazy! And at night! Mogadishu was a safe city…. In December 1990 we were evacuated by the U.S. Army after a rebel group called the United Somali Congress attacked Mogadishu, I came to Somalia in 1984, a beautiful peaceful country, and I fled from a burning Somalia in 1990. I thank the great Somali people for having me and my family as guests in their beautiful country for so many years, and I pray they get peace and prosperity. I don't really think that the West cares about the SNM tratiors, every region will now get as much attention as somaliland. Regardless of everything SNM tratiors and their foreign masters will be defeated by the somali nationalists. -
