U.S policy is destabilizing Somaliland, should be rethought

jj.. Discourtesy is not going to alleviate your predicament. Back in 1990s, as per Osman Kalluun taking part in the May 18, 2007 debate on Somali BBC, the U.S. State Department officials had politely told a visiting secessionist delegation headed by Abdirahman Tuur that Washington would not tolerate the consequence of Hargeisa becoming a nation-state because a Pandora box will open up where every African tribal village will seek and fight for sovereignty recognition to open their embassies in the Capital City. However, Mr. Kalluun as a member of the Tuur delegation still remembers the conditions the Americans set for any future discussion of the topic. The U.S. State Department officials told Tuur and his delegation, in the most diplomatic manner and with respect, that secessionists have to fulfill the following conditions before they (the US government) open a file for the dismemberment of Somali Republic, a sovereign state recognized by the whole world: 1. Come up with specific geographical territory you rule. 2. Nobody should dispute your claim for that geographical territory. 3. There should be no armed resistance against the regime you are planning to start up. 4. Get O.K. from other stakeholders i.e. the Somalis in the south. You can hide those facts from people in my city Hargeisa because the SNM gang does not allow the media to discuss such sensitive topics in public. But before you disrespect the American people, bring to them a licit concern that is democratic and just. By the way, isn’t the impossibility to fulfill these conditions the reason as why almost the whole members of the team abandoned the ship? I do not need the drivel. I know the usual drill…. Tuur lost the presidency. Buubaa is opportunistic. Kalluun is what? And Sifir lost Kulmiye something…..blah blah.... -

But with this belligerent pm and his equally stubborn boss, your approach, positive as it may be, has a slim chance to be adopted by this team! The zero sum game is deeply rooted in Somali politics---much deeper than we are willing to admit. Xiin, we are not only deep in water we are deep in ocean. You can easily come up with an array of our ailments. You can easily analyze, theorize and hypothesize. You can easily take this anecdote and find interconnectiveness with another anecdote and reach an easy and fast conclusions. There may be some truth to the recently observed phenomenon of “flimsy rationalization” that characterizes Somalis at large as diehard tribalists. Undoubtedly, tribalism puts most of us in myopic mentality that blocks us from seeing the big picture. When the world is threatened by an incurable disease, scientists supported by policy makers never cease to find remedies. Xiin, if my plea in good faith to Somalis to curtail this destructive culture of self-mutilation seems to you naïve and simple (some smart a** even called my person simpleton), give us a scope of your wisdom and without further analysis, formulate methodologies will lead us to find cure for our ailments. That is the biggest challenge all caring Somalis are facing at. [ September 07, 2007, 11:04 PM: Message edited by: Nayruus ] -

NN, the bone of contention is the Ethios in Somalia. If Mele Zenawi removes his militia from our soil, these meeting in Asmara have no legs to stand on except to emerge as strong political opposition especially if Sh. Aweys and other militants are retired. The UN has the solution for Somalia. If it approves peace keeping budget for AU forces without further delay, Ethios are forced to go home and the EU understands that.... So, brother lower your tone.... The NGOs are opening feeding centers in Hargeisa because inflaation is soo high poeple including mine in Daami can not feed themselves. The price of 50kg sac of rice is more than 30 US dollars. It tripled within the last 3 days. 15kg of powdered milk is selling more than 80 us dollars. Per capital income in our neck of the woods is 130 US per years. So, we are in paradise. -

I'm sure you're fully aware that many people hailing from Somaliland but live in various Arab countries are forced (for lack of an alternative) to use the TFG passport. How then does the Somaliland administration propose to deal with such people if (as you say) it refuses entry to any TFG document carriers into Somaliland? WAA LABO MID KUU DARAN and he will never know which one is which.. I would be guffawing all the way to Daami if I see Mr. Oodweyne taking Citizenship Oath to qualify for getting the e-passport from the Somali government. -

^^^^Nonsense.... I remember Yuusuf Garaad of Somali BBC interviewing the SNM gang’s foreigner minister at one of London Airports. The guy was arguing he was traveling with his secessionist passport and Mr. Garaad was saying to him why can't you show it to me so I can see which page the U.K. entry is stamped on. His reply was, ask the airport immigration officials what kind of passport I am traveling with. Mr. Garaad did not obviously want to embarrass him in air and dropped off the argument because he could have reminded him he is no position to ask the U.K. immigration about the personal info of any person including his subordinates that work under his supervision in The Somali BBC section. Is he a terrorist investigator that U.K. authorities are cooperating with? Why wouldn't the guy simply show him the passport if he was not lying? My people are always deceived with lies! When are they going to grow up and catch the lies? You can lie some of the people all of the time. IsN't it? [ September 03, 2007, 08:58 AM: Message edited by: Nayruus ] -

Except in Borama, Hargeisa, Burcao and Barbara khat was unknown in the rest of the country as late as 1968. Even in these four cities, few townspeople starting chewing the stuff in 1950s. In the south the twig was unknown completely. If you are thirty or more years old, ask your father if your grandfather munched the drug. You will find he did not. Here is a recent Washington Post dispatch from Gaalkacyo. In the opening paragraph it says: “GALKAYO, Somalia On a dusty street that runs through this town of 80,000 in central Somalia, a cluster of men sit on low stools, lost in their daily ritual -- chewing the green leaves of a mild narcotic called khat. Lethargic and stupefied, they seem oblivious to everything. Only when their cellphones jangle -- a surreal sound in this otherwise primitive place -- do they snap to life. Soon they've arranged the money transfers they've been waiting for and lapse back into their somnolent masticating.” In 1960s when khat was spreading southwards from Hargeisa, a prominent resident in Gaalkacyo in a farewell message to his son going abroad for studies said: Bushumahayga uma quurikaro buuri iyo jaad eh Lama baayactamo naagahaa geedka beecsade eh From these two verses you can understand how strongly our elders rejected the consumption of the drug. But Amxaaro and their evil stuff have succeeded.... To highlight the economic disaster that this drug causes, the Washington Post reporter gives us this picture: “Only men chew khat, but retail sales (and, in Galkayo, wholesale as well) are the exclusive task of women. And it's a serious business: a bunch of twigs to satisfy a man for a day costs the equivalent of $10. (Per capita income is roughly $130 a year.) If payment is made in Somali shillings, the banknotes fill a shopping bag.” Full article
