The SNM struggle was a Somali struggle for freedom whose objectives and aspirations were based on the removal of that cruel system which was characterized by inhumanity, injustice, violance, greed, crimes against humanity. Those young people picked up arms did not fight for secession, they did fight for an own goverment, they did not fight for political chairs or shares. They stood for the aspiration of the Somali people, those who struggled so long and hard to have basic human rights, freedom, justice, security, equal rights. Today we remember those young people who died in the struggle against a dictatorial regime. We ask God to rest their souls in peace. They were martyred and died for a just cause, the cause of the Somali people. We say their death was a just one. May God console their bereaved relatives. We see that they did their duty. They have not left us empty handed, but left us with a legacy that we cherish till today. They left us with courage, confidence and a belief that we are masters of our destiny. Never again will any Somali accept a dictatorial rule, never again will a Somali accept injustice, never again will a Somali remain a silent bystander when his basic human rights and freedom are at stake.They died for a just cause that is being continued till today by the Somali people in diffrent forms, in diffrent places, against diffrent rulers and maybe in diffrent ways.
