Nudawn;847171 wrote: Water is the underlying issue here, I've made this correlation before with friends and family, and I honestly think the lack of access to water is the biggest issue in Somalia. What if we can harness the river water in the south and construct man made rivers directed to the parched northern regions? 1. It would be realistic, cheaper and effective to dam the tens if not hundreds (I am not exxagerating) of seasonal rivers in the North that literally run into the sea. You see, you have to understand the geography of the north. Because the mountain range in the north runns parrallel to the Gulf of Aden coasline, the vast majority of the water that runs down the mountains empties into the sea. If you look on google maps you will see that all along the northern coast there are rivers that run into the sea - this water is not harvested or used. There are also large and productive acquifiers up north that are more than capable of meeting the local demand - indeed water produced from our northern acquifiers are exported, to among other places the UAE (however) I don't think this scarce resource should be allowed to be exported). 2. The drought occurred throughout the HORN but became a famine only in the south of our country. The reason why the drought became a famine was because of devision, conflict and instability, leading to a lack of access to imports & investment in productive capabilities; in essence it was a man-made famine. There was no lack of water - the two permanent rivers were still flowing. The question is then, what or even who is perpetuating the division and war in the south and how can it be resolved.

  20. ^ The war was a mistake, if you have even the slightest clue about international law and diplomacy. WSLF, TPLF, EPLF etc. should have been armed and bolstered and when Eritrea got their independence the Somali region could also have fought for their independence. However, hastily made and uninformed decisions denied us that opportunity... that's arrogant but incompetent and bad leadership for you. The DERG would/could have fallen and the USSR most certainly would have. In fact, had The Somali Republic not invaded Ethiopia, the USSR would not have armed the DERG to the teeth, supply 600 tanks & $4bn in military hardware, 1,500 USSR advisors, 15,000 Cuban troops and trained & armed the 250,000 troops that they did. The USSR would not have abandoned Berbera & stopped supplying The Somali Republic. But Somalia's government, in its arrogance, completely miscalculated & misunderstook the real political and diplomatic situation; did they really think that they could get away with invading another sovereign nation, whether justly so or not, and annex a 1/3 of its landmass without repercussions. There are ways to do things and they went about it completely the wrong way. They made The Somali Republic look like the agressor and invader, rather than the liberator & saviour of the oppressed that she was.
  21. I welcome the points that have been agreed. I would love for Puntland, SSC and Somaliland to also meet and agree on similar points. Wadahadal & wada shaqayn is the future. What do I hear about Ugandan police being our police force though? That is utterly disgraceful, scandalous, outrageous. Surely we can police and organise our own streets. And Ugandan police out of all the police forces in the world... are they taking the f'in piss. Uganda is profiteering out of the misery and chaos of Somalia and it will not be forgotten... they will pay.
