But it also probably has to do with birh complications and midwifes' unfamiliarity with FGM cases.

Chimera;896500 wrote: In-fact does instinct even exist? Is it just a glorified emotion or a recurring pattern of logical thinking? I think it does exist although its difficult to pinpiont. Take the example of when you can "feel" that youve forgotten something but cannot pinpoint what, or that something is the wrong decision or that someone is not telling the whole truth. Perhaps it is the subconscious parts of the mind analysing information more and sending signals to the conscious parts. But emotions, instinct or "feelings" are caused by brain activity, perhaps more spontanious than structured thought, so maybe its some part of our brain trying to tell us something that we have overlooked. Complicated stuff, I wonder if Coofle knows much about Neuroscience.

Apophis;896382 wrote: A question for Dutch speakers: how do you maintain a hold of the language after leaving the country? Do you practice? I ask because I used to be very fluent in Swahili but I have totally forgotten it because I never had the chance to us it in the UK. In my experience whether you retain your fluency in the language depends on how often (or not) you use it, but also how fluent you were in the language in the first place. I was an avid reader in Dutch which meant I had an extensive vocabulary which I suppose makes it harder to forget. How young were you when you came to the UK?

You're not too bad yourself haha. Gymnasium, Havo of VMBO.

Goed gedaan.

Am I right in saying that percentile score shows where a person's score falls within the total population of those who took the test? i.e. a percentile score of 87% means that the persons' score is ≥87% of the total population (i.e. all those who took the test)? Mahadsanid in advance.

Logic and reason, or instinct and emotions? I was watching this fascinating t.v programme that led me to ponder the following question: Do you tend to follow logic and reason, or are you guided by instinct and emotions? And which is to be trusted. Using logic to make sense of situations and then reasoning to make decisions are a process that we are taught/learn. We learn as children "the cooker is hot, if you touch it you will get burned and it will be painful"... therefore do not touch the hot cooker. That sort of thought process is then adapted and applied to other situations to make decisions. But then there is no doubt we have an inner instinct and "emotions". Emotions are real biological reactions/activities within our brains that we "feel" but do not necessarily identify/suggest a direct course of action. Having said all the above, is it even possible to sufficiently seperate and distinguish logic from emotion? Are they not both activities of the brain?

On every street there are several mentally ill people chained in front of a house - and those are only the violent ones. Traumatic experiences of war on a mass-scale have severe consequences for all those affected.

She is not talking about men telling women not to wear trousers!! Why twist what she is saying. I disagree with her that the bad counsel of the men who teased the young girl for thinking about going to office is to do with being a small. It is about not being educated enough or lack of exposure. But I agree with her such attitude is pervasive and stifles our collective development as a society. Well said!

Haatu;895877 wrote: Well I'm not going to over-generalize seen as I've lived most of my life in the West but the ones I know are certainly not timid. Quite a few of them are working mums and a whole lot of them virtually run their houses. For instance, my mum basically runs our house! Do you think that would be the case if your mum/family were inside Somalia? But in any case who "runs the house" and whether "women can/do work" is not the focus of this thread but rather the general opportunities and rights (or the lack thereof) of women within Somali society . Lastly, i dont know what Alpha is smoking but Somali society is not egalitarian, especially not where gender equality is concerned.

IBZ im with you 100% on this.Alpha mate what are you talking about LMAO @ "egalitarian society"... what society are you talking about becausr those words certainly do not describe Somali society. , IBZ, part of the problem is that strong Somali women are villified and stigmatised, whereas weak, docile, pliable and obedient women are heralded as the ideal. to be continued.

.. Ethiopia: ‘Special Police’ Execute 10 An Ethiopian government-backed paramilitary force summarily executed 10 men during a March 2012 operation in Ethiopia’s eastern Somali region. Detailed information on the killings and other abuses by the force known as the “Liyu police” only came to light after a Human Rights Watch fact-finding mission to neighboring Somaliland in April. On March 16 a Liyu police member fatally shot a resident of Raqda village, in the Gashaamo district of Somali region, who was trying to protect a fellow villager. During this operation the Liyu police force summarily executed at least 10 men who were in their custody, killed at least 9 residents in ensuing gunfights, abducted at least 24 men, and looted dozens of shops and houses. “The Liyu police abuses in Somali region show the urgent need for the Ethiopian government to rein in this lawless force.” said Leslie Lefkow, deputy Africa director at Human Rights Watch. The Ethiopian government’s response to reports of abuses in the Somali region has been to severely restrict or control access for journalists, aid organizations, human rights groups, and other independent monitors. Ethiopia’s regional and federal government should urgently facilitate access for independent investigations of the events by independent media and human rights investigators, including the United Nations Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial and summary executions. “For years the Ethiopian government has jailed and deported journalists for reporting on the Somali region,” Lefkow said. “Donor countries should call on Ethiopia to allow access to the media and rights groups so abuses can’t be hidden away.”
