that's a little simplistic don't you think. there is also the systematic failures within the education establishment. poor public services in areas of high deprivation will continue to be stumbling blocks......

Tony Harris takes a personal look at Baltimore's inner city and an education system failing black Americans. Baltimore, Maryland has come to be known as 'Charm City' because of its harbour, which attracts a vibrant nightlife and thriving tourism business. But just beyond the harbour's calm waters is one of the toughest and most violent inner cities in the US. Baltimore is also home to Al Jazeera presenter Tony Harris and in this episode of Al Jazeera Correspondent he takes us on an up close and personal journey to his old neighbourhood to witness the challenges facing black youth today as they struggle to get out of the dead end of life on inner city streets. Most of the crime in Baltimore is committed by black males with other blacks as victims, making black males an easy target for the police. And many believe that the stereotyping of black kids starts at an early age in the US - as early as grade school. In this film, Harris examines how the education system has failed black boys and reflects upon why he managed to make it out successfully while so many of his friends did not. A visit to his former high school reveals the desperation felt by both the pupils and the teachers. "School and criminal justice systems biased against black boys; all echoes of my childhood. But I managed to avoid the trap of Baltimore's cycle of poverty and violence," he explains. "But now I was going back to my hometown to get to the bottom of what I considered the new civil rights fight in America - educating black boys." --------------- interesting documentary. worth the watch.

Muj. Alpha Blondy for SOLer of the Year 2012

Alpha's Biography My name is Alpha Blondy and I was born in Hargeisa in the mid-1980s. I was displaced and forced to leave the land of my ancestors. I came to the cesspool that was to become my home, becoming a ciyaal suuq in the dingy streets of North London, before becoming a self-aggrandising community spokesman. I now live in Hargesia, coming back to a hero's welcome. Somaliland has exceeded all my expectations. Its a dynamic place and I feel really integrated. I'm a regular guy, although those who know me very well would say otherwise. I would consider myself to be friendly but have been known to be quiet and sombre at times. For me, perceptions are two fold; what you think of yourself and what others think of you, so I believe its important to pay close attention to public perceptions. I use the the sharaf-o-meter as a threshold, adding and deducing points accordingly. I have great passion for Theory and occasionally indulge in my own theories, particularly those on power, control and domination. I have a keen interest in using a multi-faceted approach in developing a link between Culture,Society and Politics. I'm a culture-vulture and have a great interest in 'World Music' and 'Foreign Films'. I detest these terms but for lack of better terms, often find myself using them. As a cultural critic, I've sat on many panels and discussion forums. I regularly listen to the BBC World Service's The Forum and have applied to be on the discussion panel. I'm also currently writing a book entitled ''The Myth of Multiculturalism - Cultural Diversity and The Rise of Political Correctness'' I enjoy listening to all sorts of music including Somali music. I particularly enjoy listening to 'conscious' music, which really means music with a message. Music is a medium of expression and should reflect society in all its complexities. My taste in music varies according to my settings. In my spare time I like to travel, volunteer in social projects and meet new people.. -

i want y'all to imagine a SOL without my presence.......grim somaha? LOL. this year i owed this site and i think we can all agree that the award should be presented to me on the 28th/29th of November 2012 in line with the Somaliland's regional elections. i'm not sure how the formalities of these SOLer of the year elections will take place but i reckon it should be on a one SOLer one vote basis LOL. all candidates should presented themselves citing why they ought be awarded the coveted title. AT has won in previous years without a clear policy platform, winning because he was popular guy, i think that ridiculous and the real leaders and those with the most substance ought be elected. there should only be one person elected and none of this Man/Woman of the year. cheers, al.

Apophis;885570 wrote: How do you do it in S/L? obviously Apo we do it the usual way and of course....there are various degrees of dating here. i prefer the more personable activity based dating, personally. this will involve going to the arcades to play games with as much physical activities as possible. these are fantastic for being ice-breakers and establishing familiarity .......... just make sure there is no one else around! sometimes....laakin, i also prefer the more laid back intellectual discussion based dating. this will involve starting a convo about female friendly topics like feminism, empowerment, western portrayal of women, bell hooks, and 21st century independent woman malakay. you must always trap them and adopt the caveman mentality by saying stuff like ''women and animals are very good for breeding, unfortunately, however, you can't eat your own children'' . they don't want to you to agree with them....so petty ma istiiri?. so i push their buttons, (no pun intended), by ensuring i continually play devils advocate then later on saying something like......''really?, you must think i'm chauvinistic pig, there is always a need for a middle ground and compromise, where are men without women? NOWHERE.....everything a man does is for a woman!'' LOOOOOOOL

oba hiloowlow;885417 wrote: lol Aaliyyah and Narniah oba, even the sisters need some love and i have so much to give i understand aaliyah recently listed herself on the imamul shafici islamic centre in toronto as available with GSOH. narniah is waiting for a shy man-boy to formally ask her out....LOOOL...she told me herself after few speculative PM exchanges. i have made enquires to both regarding marriage but i suppose my good intentions have fallen on dead ears. It has been narrated by Amr Ibn Akhwas. He relates that it was commanded by the Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam "Be kind towards your women. Take heed! You have rights over your women and your women also have rights over you. Their rights over you are that you provide food and clothing for them in good faith. Your rights over them are that they do not allow and nor do they give permission, for people to trespass into your house whose presence you dislike."
