US-Africa Leaders summit: Obama’s speed dating exercise THE first ever US-Africa Leaders summit which runs from 4-8 August in Washington DC can easily be construed as a demonstration that the US and Africa both value their relationship and that a new era in US-Africa relations has been born. However, looking deeper at the presidency of President Barack Obama, a different picture emerges. Having 55 heads of state in one place and expecting to achieve tangible results in four days is slightly optimistic for a president who spent the best part of his two terms literally ignoring the continent. China overtook the United States as Africa’s largest trading partner in 2009, the same year when Obama started his first term as US president. The past years under Obama’s rule saw US trade with Africa decline. Obama, despite his African origin, has been a less frequent visitor to the land of his ancestors than Chinese leaders. He made his first substantial visit to Africa only last year, while in the same year Chinese President Xi Jinping embarked on a three-nation African tour merely one week after taking office. Obama started his presidency on a wrong footing with Africa, saying the continent’s leadership should forget about colonialism and look inward; yet was preaching a different story for the Middle East crisis. Obama clashed with the likes of president of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who said western neo-colonial domination of Africa had impeded development. This current ‘speed dating’ with African leaders is unlikely to do in four days what could not be done in five years. The fact that there has been no threat of an African boycott to the summit is no demonstration of the value of this summit. ---- read more on Zimbabwe's take on the Summit.....http://talkzimbabwe.com/us-africa-leaders-summit/ ---- - Rwanda President Paul Kagame and Daughter Ange President Paul Biya of Cameroon and first lady Chantel. these sorts of boycott mashaariic are futile and ineffective. i don't understand why Muslims are so engaged with it. this boycott campaign will never reach the lofty heights of critical mass that Marxist revolutionaries like Chomsky and Finkelstein dream about. similarly, while it's non-violent by it's nature, the blanket boycott of Israeli goods and service is it's own form of collective punishment on ordinary Israelis. the issues involved in the conflict between Israel and Palestine are very complex, and a boycott reduces them to overly simplistic dueling camps of good and evil.

WASHINGTON DC, Aug 5 — A leading African billionaire said yesterday that “misinformed” US businesses need to study up on the continent’s opportunities, suggesting they start by Googling. In Washington for the US-Africa Leaders Summit — President Barack Obama’s historic effort to juice up the sagging US economic relationship with the continent — telecommunications tycoon Mo Ibrahim said European and Asian businesses haven’t needed such an event to get going in Africa. “I’m actually a little bit amazed that all those Africans I met on the plane ... are coming all the way here to America to tell the very smart, well-informed American businesspeople that ‘guys, you know what, there is a good opportunity in Africa’. They should do some homework,” he said. “Everywhere in Africa there are Chinese businesspeople, there are Brazilian businesspeople.” “None of us went to Brazil, or to Asia or to China to tell them, look, come and invest in Africa. They found out themselves and they come and invest. That’s how basic business people behave.” He added: “Why do we need to come and inform these misinformed American businesses? You know, you guys invented Google. Use it please.” Still, the Sudanese-born British-resident, who made his fortune with telecommunications company Celtel before selling it off in 2005, said no one should overstate Africa’s economic emergence, given the diverse conditions across 54 countries. “I’m uncomfortable, frankly, with the hype about Africa. We went from one extreme ... to, like, Africa now is the best thing after sliced bread.” Some 45 heads of state from Africa have gathered in Washington for the three-day summit, as well as scores of business representatives. — AFP -------- http://www.themalaymailonline.com/money/article/try-googling-africa-tycoon-tells-misinformed-us-businesses#sthash.z0Z4cIN2.OACUiYZt.dpuf ------- do we need American businesses to invest in Africa?

Caajib! how can she represent Somalis when she doesn't even wear a hijab. also she is from Gabiley and her parents, escaped from there, following the war. now they are proud Canadians. it's a shame more of our women are more interested in this siyasaad and the fanfare than being obedient wives. but then again, my Canadian friend was saying, it's impossible to survive on a single household salary. maybe more women ought to work, i suggested.....but not as liars and corrupt politician fully immersed in this sort of work. our women have more worth than they'd like to think we accord them. but they'll say i'm crazy and a misogynist. i'm neither lol.

@Dhagax-Tuur said: Wonderful. If only she had her hijab on. Good on her for preserving her father's story in written form. I think it is the duty of the young generation of today to conserve our oral tradition thus far into written form so the following lot can easily access it. her new book is called ''the orchard of lost souls''. caajib. if they ain't disrespecting us, these cultural icons cease to exist. shame really. agreed on the hijab.

@Tallaabo said: ^ Proper governments plan and work for the development of their societies but unfortunately in Somaliland we do not have a proper government. What we have got is a group of self-serving clueless ex clan warlords. you're just a self-hating Somalilander. Keep your vile opinions to yourself. the SL government is not perfect but they are working hard to get us to the first rung of development.

@Johnny B said: Or leave Hargeisa , Burao or Berbera in 2014 for just yurubta dheexe little Nordic haven countries, just to claim to be from "xamar" and / or "Gaalkacyo", what a boggled mind. Gaal boy Jonny, there's all sorts of folks using the Somali label these days. it's not surprising that Bantu-noids of all leanings continue to vicariously use our collective name to claim asylum. of course, thanks to your folks in particular, our collective name has been tainted and dragged through the mud.

i think i've got Ebola! A Nigerian actor has sparked outrage after posting an image of himself wearing an Ebola mask while sitting in a first class airport lounge as he flees Liberia. 'Nollywood' star Jim Iyke posted a message on his Instagram page saying he had cut short a business trip to Monrovia in Liberia - where at least 600 people have already died from the disease. The image of Iyke sitting on green leather-clad seats in the airport's luxury first class lounge while wearing an expensive designer watch and sunglasses was accompanied with the caption:'Not ashamed to admit this scares the Jesus outta me#Ebola.' lol all the celebs are fleeing this......
