Saudi Leaders Terrified of Upcoming Protest Saudi Arabia has sent as many as 10,000 security forces into its Shia Muslim provinces in preparation for next week's "day of rage." So far, Saudi Arabia has been spared much of the unrest in the region but that could all change next week if, as expected, thousands of Saudis gather in Riyadh and in the Shia-dominated northeast to protest on Friday. "Saudi security officials have known for more than a month that the revolt of Shia Muslims in the tiny island of Bahrain was expected to spread to Saudi Arabia," writes Robert Fisk in the Independent. Protesters are apparently expecting security forces to respond violently and are planning to put women on the front lines to dissuade them from opening fire. Instead of pushing for immediate regime change—as it did to varying degrees in Egypt and now Libya—the U.S. is urging protesters from Bahrain to Morocco to work with existing rulers toward what some officials and diplomats are now calling "regime alteration." They said the city was otherwise calm There were numerous attempts by the citizens to "peacefully" protest in other parts of the country and nothing but death and destruction came out of it. The famous Jaziira Massacre on which 59 peaceful demonstrators were picked up from their homes in the middle of the night, taken to Jaziira beach and shot dead one by one, serves as another reminder of the brutality citizens faced if they tried to exercise their rights.

Interesting development! Nonviolent march is an excellent apparatus for democratic debate. It is heartwarming to see folks out on the streets, letting their voices be heard without anybody firing at them. I urge President Faroole to exercise restraint in this matter. Violence suppression should never be an option against peaceful demonstrators.
