  3. With new American support, confidence is growing among Arab dictators that they can now crush any uprising . Yemen's president has boldly rejected any deal with the opposition today, as he ordered his military to shoot at protesters killing four. Bahrain's monarchy has decided to ignore the silly noises coming from its shiite protesters after it became clear Obama is fully behind the family. It seems Arab dictators are digging in as initial fear subsides. What is next?
  4. Saudi Leaders Terrified of Upcoming Protest Saudi Arabia has sent as many as 10,000 security forces into its Shia Muslim provinces in preparation for next week's "day of rage." So far, Saudi Arabia has been spared much of the unrest in the region but that could all change next week if, as expected, thousands of Saudis gather in Riyadh and in the Shia-dominated northeast to protest on Friday. "Saudi security officials have known for more than a month that the revolt of Shia Muslims in the tiny island of Bahrain was expected to spread to Saudi Arabia," writes Robert Fisk in the Independent. Protesters are apparently expecting security forces to respond violently and are planning to put women on the front lines to dissuade them from opening fire. If the protests do materialize, it won't just be bad news for the House of Saud, but also for the White House. It's much easier to abandon Libya than Saudi Arabia. On Saturday, after a protest by about 100 people, the Saudi Interior Ministry issued a statement making it clear demonstrations will not be tolerated and warning that security forces have been authorized to "act against violators," reports the Associated Press. http://slatest.slate.com/id/2287455/

  6. The Wall Street Journal is reporting a troubling new development. WASHINGTON—After weeks of internal debate on how to respond to uprisings in the Arab world, the Obama administration is settling on a Middle East strategy: help keep longtime allies who are willing to reform in power, even if that means the full democratic demands of their newly emboldened citizens might have to wait. Instead of pushing for immediate regime change—as it did to varying degrees in Egypt and now Libya—the U.S. is urging protesters from Bahrain to Morocco to work with existing rulers toward what some officials and diplomats are now calling "regime alteration." The approach has emerged amid furious lobbying of the administration by Arab governments, who were alarmed that President Barack Obama had abandoned Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and worried that, if the U.S. did the same to the beleaguered king of Bahrain, a chain of revolts could sweep them from power, too, and further upend the region's stability. Ibtisam, prostitution is illegal in Somaliland according to Somalia’s 1962 penal code. “On reassertion of its independence in 1991, the Republic of Somaliland decided to continue applying the same Penal Code.” PENAL CODE LEGISLATIVE DECREE NO. 5 (1962) Crimes against morals and decency. Article 405 (prostitution) - 1. Whoever practices prostitution in any form shall be punished with imprisonment from two months to two years and with a fine. 2. Where the act is committed by a married person, the punishment shall be increased. The initial 4 year sentence which was slightly higher than what article 405 of the Penal Code states, was most likely driven by other factors such as mass distribution, public outrage and harming the state’s image. Whether the man served time based on our prevailing law (2 months to two years) or the possibility his imprisonment may harm Somaliland’s quest for recognition, could have been the motivating factor for Siilaanyo’s decision to pardon this pornographer. Acknowledging Siilaanyo’s pardon made a mockery of Somaliland’s justice system, the fact still remains that our penal code doesn’t go far enough in stopping these crimes. Such high profile decision also provides much needed ammunition for the Islamist to continue their quest for a constitutional overhaul.
  8. Just for the record, there were many demonstrations in Somalia and sadly all ended up in massacres. The last one was that of June, 1989. Scores of innocent protesters were murdered in that peaceful demonstration as Koofiyad Gaduud regime loyalists mercilessly gunned down anything that moves. The regime down-played the numbers and claimed only 23 people have died in the official news release. 1989: Somalia Says 23 Die in Clashes Somali police increased to 23 the death toll from clashes between security forces and religious demonstrators in Somalia's capital Friday, and residents said that gunfire could still be heard today. Police said 59 persons were wounded in Friday's clashes in Mogadishu when security forces opened fire on what the government termed "troublemakers hiding behind the banner of religion." The government earlier said 10 persons were killed Friday. Residents, contacted by telephone, said shots were heard periodically around the capital today but that the shooting lacked the intensity of Friday's clashes. They said the city was otherwise calm There were numerous attempts by the citizens to "peacefully" protest in other parts of the country and nothing but death and destruction came out of it. The famous Jaziira Massacre on which 59 peaceful demonstrators were picked up from their homes in the middle of the night, taken to Jaziira beach and shot dead one by one, serves as another reminder of the brutality citizens faced if they tried to exercise their rights.
  9. It is a trading game at the moment. Here is a remarkable video shot by CNN in Benghazi yesterday. <object classid="clsid
  10. Today 1:47 PM Oil Prices Drop Due To Rumors Gaddafi Has Been Shot Rumors that Gaddafi is dead are spreading, although there has been no official confirmaitn that this is the case. Reuters issued this series of cryptic tweets: @ Reuters : FLASH: U.S. government has no reason to believe that Gaddafi is dead -official @ Reuters : FLASH: Oil traders cite rumor that Gaddafi shot, pushing down oil prices @ Reuters : Oil tumbles on rumors Gaddafi shot: traders http://t.co/eS1IUCE However, NBC News reports:
  11. As far as death and destruction are concerned, Somalia's ousted regime has done more than Gaddafi did so far. The key word is "so far" because Libya is still in tact. Let us wait and see what happens in the next few weeks. It is a deja vu all over again! - A brutal dictator oppresses his own people made up of many different clans - People rise up against the dictator "by any means necessary" - Dictator refuses to give up power and vows to "die here" - Dictator's clan and loyalists rally behind him fearing for their own existence - Government system slowly breaks down in the process - Dictator is eventually chased out of the capital after much death and destruction - Vicious power struggle breaks out among the clans vying for the top price - Dictator eventually destroys country for not giving up power peacefully and earlier. Alloow sahal amuuraha.

The information I was given at the time was that only 2 diehard demonstrators set up a small tent at the square. I now understand the real number was much bigger than that. It seems Puntland goverment propagandist may have downplayed the numbers. Thanks for the correction. This revolution is just exploding my friend. It is so unpredictable at the moment.
  13. Eat your heart out Tunisia. Puntland is here to out-pace you. NGONGE, Awoowe, SOL Revolution is shaking things up already. Today, the largest crowd came out and occupied Daawad Square. Read Here Imam Faroole sent a negotiating team to Daawad Square and agreed to respect protesters' demands. Will it be enough for the demonstrators? For the first time since the revolution, Imam Faroole spoke today. “Dadkayaga Lama Xasuuqi Karo Si Rasmi Ah Ayaan U Difaacaynaa” said the President. NGONGE, there you have it my friend. This revolution is moving so fast, no one can predict the outcome.
  14. heheh@NGONGE, "Hala soo qabto" is still better than a bunch of Imam supporters on camel back whipping folks into frenzy as they race through the demo. The great Imam has shown restraint so far. Free SSC can be achieved through strength. Strength is a good deterrent as the Americans like to say. On a new development, I am now hearing two demonstrators briefly occupied Garoowe's Daawad Square for few minutes and quickly disappeared into a crowd of passionate Imam supporters. The two guys will be back to the square tomorrow night. It is here my friend. There is no turning back.
  15. Macruuf, I even heard pirates bought huge buildings there, but it could be sheeko Maryooley. Keep us updated awoowe.
  16. This is for NGONGE! Revolution is here my good friend. The time has come! It started right here on SOL.
  17. Sad story isn't it? This man has killed more than 80 people in just 3 days. At this rate, he is expected to kill close to 600 people in the next three weeks. He is a mindless despot. His time is up!!
  18. Interesting development! Nonviolent march is an excellent apparatus for democratic debate. It is heartwarming to see folks out on the streets, letting their voices be heard without anybody firing at them. I urge President Faroole to exercise restraint in this matter. Violence suppression should never be an option against peaceful demonstrators.
  19. ^^ When mint was available in the US only, I was a member and it was fetching some of my Canadian banking information. It is now available in Canada in full. I have been hearing about UK expansion for a while but I am not sure what the complications are. There could be some UK based imitators out there. Mint.com is one of the greatest tools ever invented for online finance. It is very convenient and effective.
