HADRAAWI is campaigning for Somaliland union with the rest of Somalia
Libaax-Sankataabte replied to AUN's topic in Politics
I wouldn't put that much weight on it. Hadraawi is an individual and he has his own opinion. As much as he can speak his mind, he doesn't speak for the elected government there. However, the good thing is that FREEDOM OF SPEECH is alive in Somaliland and individuals like Hadraawi can speak their mind without being harrassed by undercover agents or anyone else. -
Baby_Gurl, here is a good scenario. Let us use the senior nomads here as an example. I know both of them very well. Kool_Kat is from Somalia (She is Somalian ) Ameena is from Somaliland (She is Somalilander ) One is Ina Xaaji Maygaan Foodcadde and the other is the daughter of Ismaaciil Amakaag. The conclusion: They are both Somalis.

Baashi, I agree with you on the internationalist dominated state department but I do believe that the hawks are also targeting Powel and his future presidential ambitions. In the early days, the ideological rivaly between Rumsfeld and Powel was tempered by a cordial personal relationship. But Powel has always maintained a strong support from Bush and that has now changed after the diplomatic battle to avert a war was lost. Powel is now isolated more than ever and the hawks are jubilant about it. It is my belief that Gingrich's attack on the State Department was not only a maneuver designed to gain control of policy usually designated for the State Department, but it was also an attempt to embarrass and marginalize Powel as a statesman.

Ilham and Koolkat, Whats up with TORONTO and SARS lately? It looks as if TORONTO became a province of China. How did that thing speard out of hand? World Health Organization or some other international organization just issued a travel warning to TORONTO saying it is the most deadly city in North America. It has become the city of death I heard. Toronto mayor and other politicians are outraged by the Toronto blacklisting as a SARS heaven. Americans are all canceling their vacations to TORONTO. I guess I won't be going back to my hometown anytime soon. Nomads be very very careful. Our Somali tradition of sharing and being close to each other can actually infect our community faster than any other community.

saxib, this is a Somali statement popularized by Somali refugees who fled to Ethiopia when Siyaad Barre was bombarding Hargeisa and Burco. In general, this is what it says: An infidel who is willing to save your infants and give you a save heaven is atleast better than the so-called Muslim treating you like an infidel. my close, general translation. It is a sad statement which underlines the sufferings of Somalis under other Somalis.

I think Newt is personalizing the issue against Colin Powell. It is an indirect attack on Colin Powell and it is engineered by Rumsfeld. He is motivated by money from the Isreali lobby and the fact that his close friend Rumsfeld had built a position of almost unrivalled authority inside the administration.

A New War in Washington By Jim Lobe, AlterNet April 22, 2003 It's been barely a week since the U.S. took control of Baghdad, but the Pentagon is already embroiled in a new war, this time with the State Department. The opening salvo was delivered Tuesday morning by the former Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives (1995-98) and member of the Pentagon's Defense Policy Board, Newt Gingrich, at the neo-conservative American Enterprise Institute (AEI). Gingrich, who is close to Pentagon chief Donald Rumsfeld, aimed the full fury of his rhetorical fire at the State Department, accusing it of actively subverting President George W. Bush's agenda in Iraq and beyond. "The last seven months have involved six months of diplomatic failure and one month of military success," Gingrich charged, adding, "Now the State Department is back at work pursuing policies that will clearly throw away all the fruits of hard-won victory." It was a stunning attack from someone so closely identified with Rumsfeld and the neo-conservative hawks around him. "I've never seen a wholesale attack on America's entire diplomatic establishment like this," said Charles Kupchan, a foreign-policy expert at Georgetown University. "This is fundamentally about ideology and the efforts of the neo-conservatives to institutionalize their victories over the moderate and liberal internationalists." It also illustrates the degree to which relations between the State Department and the Pentagon hawks has moved to open warfare as both sides jostle for control of policy in Iraq and the broader Middle East. "I think it is designed to scare people into thinking that anyone who challenges the right wing is going to suffer for it. He wants to get these people who in his mind pervert presidential policy out on the street," said Richard Murphy, who served as assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs under Ronald Reagan and is currently a Middle East expert with the New York-based Council on Foreign Relations. Kupchan also said it was unlikely that Gingrich, as a member of the Policy Board, would not have cleared his remarks with top officials. The fact that Gingrich's remarks, which were leaked to the Washington Post in advance, is also highly significant. So is his choice of venue. The AEI - where Gingrich is a Fellow – is where Bush presented his most comprehensive proposal yet for democratizing Iraq and the Arab world nearly two months ago. It is also home to the former chairman of the Defense Policy Board, Richard Perle and several other neo-conservative analysts who have been the most outspoken about promoting "regime change" in the Middle East and U.S. military dominance in the world. Gingrich was careful to insist that he was not faulting Secretary of State Colin Powell, whom he depicted as a prisoner of the Department and its Near East bureau. But he charged that the administration was split between two "worldviews": the State Department worldview as one of "process, politeness, and accommodation," and president's worldview was that of "facts, values and outcomes." Gingrich said that the Pentagon appeared far more faithful to the latter. When the State Department failed to persuade key allies, such as Turkey, South Korea, France and Germany to support Washington, it was the Pentagon who brought along Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan, according to Gingrich, thus making it far easier to go to war. "The military delivered diplomatically and then the military delivered militarily in a stunning, four-week campaign," he declared. But even now, he warned, those gains are jeopardized by the State Department in four critical areas. First, he called Powell's recently-announced visit to Damascus next month to meet with Syrian President Bashir Assad, a "terrorist-supporting, secret police-wielding dictator," as plainly "ludicrous." Second, Gingrich attacked the State Department's "invention" of the so-called "Quartet," made up of the U.N., Russia, the E.U. and the U.S., to manage Palestinian-Israeli peace talks as a "clear disaster for American diplomacy." Third, Gingrich assailed the diplomats sent to help oversee the occupation in Iraq as "representing the worst instincts" of the Near East Bureau, which was "to create a weak Iraqi government that will not threaten its Syrian, Iranian, Saudi and other dictatorial neighbors." Finally, he slammed the involvement of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in the reconstruction process, calling instead for its abolishment. The State Department itself issued a low-key response to the Gingrich attack, insisting that it is loyally and effectively carrying out Bush's policy, including the Road Map for Israeli-Palestinian peace. But many onlookers agree that Gingrich's assertions are simply not true. "Gingrich and company should look at themselves in the mirror," Kupchan said. "If you ask who is it who has set most of the world against the United States, it's not the Department; it's the Pentagon and the neo-cons." Gingrich's call for "bold dramatic change at the State Department" does, however, offer a preview of the ambitions of the neo-conservatives and their allies within the administration. "Calls for State Department reform are really a veiled way of trying to make permanent changes that would leave a certain ideological strain that could be called 'neo-imperial' in control not just of the Pentagon but of other parts of the government as well," Kupchan said.

DEAR BELIEVERS, I saw you yesterday as you began your daily chores..You woke up without a prayer. As a matter of fact, you didn't even bless your meals, or pray before going to bed last night..You are so unthankful, I like that about you. I cannot tell you how glad I am that you have not changed your way of living. Fool, you are mine. Remember, you and I have been going steady for years, and I still don't love you yet. As a matter of fact, I hate you, because I hate what God made out of dirty clay and told us to bow it..How could I bow a dirty clay, when I am made from fire. "I" am more superior then you. "I" don't make mistakes. Whatever "I" do, is right. I am only using you to prove God is wrong. He kicked me out of Heaven, and I'm going to use you as long as possible to prove I am right and I am better then you fools, in every sense. My life (my last resting place) is Hell, but what ever time God has granted me, I will do my best to take as many of you fools as possible with me, to Hell. You see, Fools, GOD LOVES YOU and HE has great plans in store for you. I know that I have no power on you if you haven't yielded your life to me and don't forget that I made a promise to God that I'm going to make your life a living hell. That way we'll be together twice. I'm really showing Him who's better from us, and how He has made a mistake by choosing you over me. With all of the good times we've had... We have been watching dirty movies, cursing people out, partying, going to discos, staying out late with friends, stealing, lying, being hypocritical, indulging in fornication, overeating, telling dirty jokes, gossiping, back stabbing people, disrespecting adults and those in leadership position, NO respect for the mosque, bad attitudes: SURELY you don't want to give all this up! Come on, Fools, let's burn together forever. I've got some really hot plans for us. This is just a letter of appreciation from me to you. I'd like to say "THANKS" for letting me use you for most of your foolish life. You are so gullible, I laugh at you. When you are tempted to sin, you give in HA HA HA, you make me sick. Sin is beginning to take its toll on your life. You look 20 years older, I need new blood. So go ahead and teach some children how to sin. All you have to do is smoke, drink alcohol, cheat, gamble, gossip, fornicate, and listen and dance to the top 10 jams. Do all this in the presence of children too, and they will do it too. Kids are like that. Your children will be with us in Hell too. That's the best you and I can give to your children. Well, Fool, I have to let you go for now. I'll be back in a couple of seconds to tempt you again. If you don't get smart, you wouldn't run somewhere, confess your sins, live for God with what little bit of life that you have left. It's not my nature to warn anyone, but to be your age and still sinning, it's becoming a bit ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I still hate you ... and I won't go to Hell alone! Always waiting for you, your sincere friend, Satan P.S. And if you really love me, you won't reply to this post cursing me! "

Originally posted by Northerner: lets change the topic to what can be done to improve the lives of those living in s/land ie health system changes, economic issues, development issues, education system etc Northerner, saxib the last time I visited Somaliland, the prestigious SHEIK boarding school and the big hospital in Sheikh were the epitome of ideal public institutions in Somalia. Now I hear the school is showing signs of neglect and the famous Hospital needs urgent repairs to stay standing. The city of Burco which has experienced its share of destruction as a result of feuding rival clans is the surprise story in our saga. Perhaps nothing is more telling than the demise of what was once a beautiful city as far as the direction our nation took as a whole and the speed at which things had disintegrated is concerned. But equally remarkable is the resilience and the resolve of our people and their industrious capacity. Most of the Burco inhabitants found refuge outside of Burco, primarily the city of YIROOWE. But many have returned and have rebuilt their homes. Their story is a success story and should be used as a paradigm by all others. Despite all the successes, the people of Burco still need help with rebuilding the city infrastructure, de-mining the streets and providing a sense of livelihood for the residents there through small businesses, free schools, etc. Siilaanyo’s new administration should reflect on those issues and initiate the needed transformation of the roads, hospitals and schools. Burcaawis can take care of a lot on their own, but they still require help from their government.
