  1. lol@jumatatu. Oh my. Viking, tall business towers, IT corrodors, tourist villas are not built for nothing. They are part of a business strategy to generate more revenue for the state. In other words, these business investments are made to attract more business from around the world. It is so far workig very well. I look at these buildings as a muslim business expanding and trying to do well. I commend countries like Malaysia and UAE for moving forward with investments in infrastructure, education and tourism. I would rather see these investments made rather than see few farts depositing the oil money in swiss banks. As for the help for other muslim, I think that starts at the local level first. I wish them well. Upward mobility.
  2. Underdog you are right. I am aware of atleast more than 40 big projects underway in dubai. It is not a joke. There is nothing like Dubai. lol@Ameenah. Dubai is one place where jobs are plenty. UAE is one country that was always good to the Somalis. The Emir always says, LEAVE THE SOMALIS ALONE. I got more pictures of Dubai and I will be updating this thread regularly.
  3. It is official. The tallest building in the world will be built in Dubai. The actual construction work on the Burj tower will begin in January. The concrete and steel tower along with the world's largest mall in Dubai is part of an $8 billion 500-acre project designed to make this tiny emirate a desert beauty and a tourist paradise. Samsung, the giant Korean engineering company, Bisex of Belgium and Arabtec won the contract to build this landmark building. Dubai is already the home of the only seven-star hotel in the world (burj arab) which is said to have become an overnight success.
  4. Eiffage engineering group built the bridge. The same company that built the Eiffel tower. It was also managed by another French company. As for the architecture, this is usually more international. In every country, you will see many buildings designed by foriegners. Norman Foster and Partners is basically an collection of architects from many countries headed by the company owner: Norman Foster.
  5. Don't mind me, I am an engineering and technology enthusiast. Have you guys seen the news of the Millau bridge on CNN and the BBC? Amazing civil engineering. This bridge in the clouds delivers yet another blow to the face of those who hate the French: the Yankees. This is the tallest bridge in the world. Who said you can't drive in the clouds. Watch the video here http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4095385.stm#
  6. For the nomads who are new to SKYPE, I hope the following simple info helps you. I have been a member for a while and it is really an amazing tool once you figure it all out. It might not be for everyone. This is how it works. 1. Let us say you have a computer and you live in Columbus. 2. Your aunt Xaliimo has another computer and lives in Laascaanood. 3. She downloads the program in her computer and gives herself a username (LA_QUEEN ) 4. You also download the program and register your username (Bad_Boy_Columbus) 5. You call each other (provided you know each other's username). Everything else is history 6. Fill out your profile if you want other Somalis to find you when they search for the word Somali or Somalia. Be careful. You will get weird calls from other Somalis who don't know you. Use it at your own risk.
  7. Salafi and Ale-u-baahne have become the source of constant complaints from the nomads.
  8. So you are a skype enthusiast huh? It is a pretty neat tool which might work for many nomads. It would be cool if the nomads registered their SOL usernames and talked to each other on the phone (throug the internet ofcourse, but this ain't no Paltalk. Much better). FCC chairman Micheal Powell once said "it is over" refering to Skype and its potential to take on the big telephone companies. http://www.skype.com
  9. Oh, Ameenah ... the story of awoowe Libaax-Sankataabte is a facinating story and a very complex one which will take days to mention half of it. Briefly, Ameenah, grandpa was called Kowte "Libaax-Sankataabte". The name has its origns in his battles with lions who made a habit of destroying his geel and ari in the north. He was a very strong man and fearless fighter. He was twice left unconscious because of injuries her sustained in a fight with a lion. Family legend has it, his only weapon of choice was Toorey(somali-knife) and his cimaamad (scarf). Touching the nose of another is associated with agressiveness and bravery in that part of the world. Ok Tweety? lol@Lander. raw meet? They don't eat raw meat over there. that is Amxaaro style dee.
  10. Good news. This goverment was brought down as I predicted earlier. Dimoqraadiyadu waa wax dantu noogu jirto. Back to the books.
  11. Oh man, what can I say Bari. Sophist is just playing with fire.
  12. Anyone with recent pictures of Buuhoodle?
  13. Sophist is partially correct. Times have changed. But I believe the symbolic respect garnered by the title is still prevalent. Sophist, just to let you know, LST is a direct descendant of the King. Afku yaanu ku qaloocan awoowe. My ayeeyo was murdered along with my grandfather by the Italians on their cowardly attack against the city of Baargaal. a little history. On 13 October, 1924 Coronaro was to meet Boqor Osman at Baargaal to press for his surrender. Under siege already, Boqor Osman was playing for time. However, on 23 October Boqor Osman sent an angry response to the Governor defying his order. Following this a full scale attack was ordered in November. Baargaal was bombarded and razed to the ground. This region was ethnically compact, and was out of range of direct action by the fascist government of Muqdisho. The attempt of the colonisers to suppress the region erupted into explosive confrontation. The Italians were meeting fierce resistance on many fronts. In December 1925, led by the charismatic leader Hersi Boqor, son of Boqor Osman, the sultanate forces drove the Italians out of Hurdia and Haafuun, two strategic coastal towns on the Indian Ocean. Another contingent attacked and destroyed an Italian communications centre at Cape Guardafui, on the tip of the Horn. In retaliation Bernica and other warships were called on to bombard all main coastal towns of the ********** . After a violent confrontation Italian forces captured Ayl (Eil), which until then had remained in the hands of Hersi Boqor. In response to the unyielding situation, Italy called for reinforcements from their other colonies, notably, Eritrea. With their arrival at the closing of 1926, the Italians began to move into the interior where they had not been able to venture since their first seizure of the coastal towns. Their attempt to capture Dharoor Valley was resisted, and ended in failure.
  14. This goverment will not pass the parliament. It will be brought down as quickly as it comes to the debating floor. This is the good thing about democracy.

  19. I searched the net for Arafat and his relationship with the Somali people. I found a good picture. I am possitive there are many other pictures out there, but this is the only one I found. May Allah grant him Jannah for his jihad. PRESIDENT ABDIQASIM and ARAFAT As for Nationalist's post, I think the nomads are reading too much into his little list.

  21. Beautiful mountain indeed. A true wonder. Where is my friend MMA? I am hoping he can provide us more info and pics.
  22. Rahima, you and I would like to see someone put a fresh spin on Somali politics, but are you positive Somalis are willing to test the waters with the name "al-itihaad" if need be? This is a general question.
