  1. Few days before the election, another bombshell. Leader of evangelical group resigns amid allegations By Paul Asay and DeeDee Correll The Gazette (MCT) COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Rev. Ted Haggard, senior pastor at New Life Church, resigned Thursday as president of the 30-million-member National Association of Evangelicals, following allegations he paid a Denver man for sex over the past three years. He also placed himself on administrative leave from New Life Church, pending an investigation of Jones' claims, a move church officials said is standard after allegations of impropriety. He said in a statement this afternoon that he could "not continue to minister under the cloud created by the accusations made on Denver talk radio this morning." Several religious leaders quickly rallied behind Haggard. "Ted Haggard is a friend of mine, and it appears someone is trying to damage his reputation as a way of influencing the outcome of Tuesday's election," Focus on the Family James Dobson said in a news release issued before Haggard resigned his national post Thursday. Dobson called the media "unconscionable" for reporting "a rumor like this based on nothing but one man's accusation." Haggard, 50, has not returned phone calls Thursday from The Gazette, but he did tell KUSA-TV in Denver Wednesday that "I did not have a homosexual relationship with a man in Denver. I am steady with my wife. I'm faithful to my wife." A man who identified himself as Mike Jones, 49, of Denver told The Associated Press Thursday that he has voicemails from Haggard as well as an envelope he said Haggard used to mail him cash. Jones declined to make any of that available to the AP. "There's some stuff on there (the voice mails) that's pretty damning," he said. No evidence to substantiate Jones' claims has been produced. Jones alleged on Wednesday he and Haggard had a three-year relationship. Jones told his story to a KHOW radio in Denver and to KUSA. Jones told The Associated Press that Haggard paid him to have sex nearly every month. Jones said he had advertised himself as an escort on the Internet and that a man who called himself Art contacted him. Jones said he later saw the man on television identified as Haggard. He said he last had sex with Haggard in August. He said he did not warn him before making his allegations public this week. The Rev. Ross Parsley, associate senior pastor, will serve as acting senior pastor for the church while the investigation takes place. The process involves an investigation by pastors outside the New Life system. The overseers could recommend Haggard be dismissed, reinstated but disciplined or reinstated without discipline. The experts that may look at this incident are Larry Stockstill of Bethany World Prayer Center in New Orleans, Mark Cowart, of Church for All Nations in Colorado Springs, and Mike Ware, pastor at Victory Church in Denver. "This is really routine when any sort of situation like this arises, so we're prepared," said Carolyn Haggard, a church spokeswoman and Haggard's niece. "The church is going to continue to serve and be welcoming to our community. That's a priority." Steve Holt, senior pastor at the 3,500-member Mountain Springs Church in Colorado Springs, said of the allegations, "It's fishy. I think people should take note that this is five days before election, and that Ted is proponent of yes on Amendment 43 and No on Referendum I." Amendment 43 would amend the Colorado state constitution to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Referendum I would grant same-sex couples some of the same rights as married heterosexual couples. He feels that the so-called religious and cultural wars "are out of control" on both sides. And this is a good example of it." He says he has been a good friend of Haggard for 11 years, and they sometimes pray together. "He's a "man of integrity and good works, and there is no reason to believe the accusations. I don't want to see him impugned with spurious accusations with no relevant information to back it up." The Rev. Rob Brendle, associate pastor for New Life Church, also says the allegations are unfounded. "I know Ted to be a man of unwavering integrity," Brendle said. "There's nothing in this man's charges that is true." Don Armstrong, rector for Grace Episcopal and St. Stephen's Church in Colorado Springs, says he doubts Jones' accusations are true. "I've known Pastor Haggard for a long time, and he's a decent man," he said. "That's the last thing he'd succumb to." Gay spiritual leaders in Colorado Springs said the allegations probably won't impact statewide elections. There are two major issues on the ballot related to sexuality: Amendment 43, which would define marriage as between a man and woman, and Referendum I, which would give same-sex couples more legal rights. "The time is interesting," said Nori Rost, who runs an organization called Just Spirit, a gay and lesbian activist agency and religious-right watchdog. "I would say that probably the male escort and Ted Haggard are the only ones who know the truth of what happened." The National Association of Evangelicals issued no statement about Haggard Thursday, and its chairman, Rev. Roy Taylor, did not return a phone call. State Republican Party Communications Director Bryant Adams declined to comment but said, "That's Ted Haggard's business. That's between Ted Haggard and his accuser. I'm not going to slam somebody." Asked if he would go to bat for Haggard, he said, "I don't know enough about the situation. Some gay prostitute goes on the radio and says he's had some type of relationship with Ted Haggard. I think you call into question where the source is coming from. I'm just not commenting on this. We don't have anything to do with Ted Haggard. We don't talk with his group. There's no need for us to." Mikey Weinstein, who sued the Air Force over forced proselytizing at the Air Force Academy and had his case thrown out last week, said Haggard told him in late September in an e-mail he planned to resign from the NAE to spend more time with his family and church but did not elaborate. On Peter Boyles' radio show on KHOW Thursday, Boyles announced Jones would take a polygraph test Friday morning. Jones told Boyles his evidence consisted of "various voice mails that he has left me. Even if the voicemails didn't even mention sex, let's just say that, why would he be contacting me period?" Jones said Haggard's fantasy was for Jones to arrange for a group of "young college guys ...around 18-22. He would love to have an orgy," he said. Jones said the two got together at least once a month. At first, he said, Haggard claimed he was from Kansas City. "As time went on, the calls started coming from Colorado Springs," he said. Jones said he didn't realize who Haggard was until about two years ago when he saw a History Channel program on which Haggard was interviewed. Jones said he decided to expose what he called Haggard's hypocrisy. "After sitting back and contemplating this issue, the biggest reason is, being a gay man all my life, I have experienced with my friends some sadness. I had two friends that were together 50 years, when one of them would get in a hospital for an accident or something, their partner could not get in to see them. I saw a lot of sadness. I felt it was my responsibility to my fellow brothers and sisters that I had to take a stand." He said he was tired of Haggard's anti-gay messages and acknowledged he hopes the news affects Amendment 43. "I don't know if it's going to change any votes or not. What I want people to think about when they step in the voting booth, is, `If I were a gay person, what would I want out of life? And you would want the same things everybody else wants.'" Greg Montoya, editor of a newspaper that focuses on Denver's gay, lesbian and transgender community, Out Front Colorado, said Jones is a well known figure who was voted by the paper's readers three times as the best massage artist and personal trainer in the area. "He definitely knows what he's doing, he's very aware of his appearance," Montoya said of Jones. "And from what I know he's a very good personal trainer as well." The stocky Jones is known for getting results with his weightlifting students, Montoya said. Montoya said rumors about Haggard's love life have circulated through Denver's gay community for the past year. "But we didn't know it involved Mike Jones." A Web site that includes Jones' contact information advertises "Massage by Mike." He describes himself as standing five feet eight inches and weighing 190 pounds. His arms, he claims, are 18 inches; his chest 47 inches; his waist 32 inches; and his thighs 24. "I offer a deep tissue and swedish style massage with the pleasure of the man in mind," he writes. "If you like a strong muscle man to bring pleasure to you, then please call me." He listed his rates as $70 per hour and $90 for an hour and a half.
  2. That was a very nice video. It really warmed my heart to see our people going out of their way to have a normal life. Walaahi jiririco ayaa igu jajabtay markaan arkay dadkaan dhibaata ay ka baxeen. Ilaahay ha u siyaadiyo nabad, horumar iyo wanaag. Aamiin.
  3. I recommend the following delightful reads. Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies Published: 1997 Author: Jared Diamond -- professor of geography at UCLA. Awards: In 1998 it won a Pulitzer Prize and the Aventis Prize for Best Science Book Brief Wiki: "The author attempts to explain why Eurasian civilization, as a whole, has survived and conquered others, while refuting the belief that Eurasian hegemony is due to any form of Eurasian intellectual or moral superiority. Diamond argues that the gaps in power and technology between human societies do not reflect cultural or racial differences, but rather originate in environmental differences powerfully amplified by various positive feedback loops. He also, most explicitly in the epilogue, argues that societies with food surpluses and high-to-moderate degrees of interaction with outsiders are more likely to encourage great people to realize their full potential and to adopt new inventions." The other book I recently finished reading is by comedian Al Franken; Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at [America's] Right Full of laughs.

  5. BEIJING, China (Reuters) -- China has promised to use its foreign exchange reserves -- the world's largest -- in a responsible manner that will not destabilise global markets. The reserves hit $987.9 billion at the end of September and have been expanding at such a clip that they either have surpassed $1 trillion, or will soon. Asked at a regular news conference on Tuesday whether Beijing could provide assurances that it would not manage the reserves in a way that disrupts world markets, Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said: "On this issue, China will act in a responsible manner and make its own active contributions to the protection of global financial stability." Some government economists have recommended that China diversify its stockpile of reserves, much of which is parked in U.S. government debt, away from the dollar to guard against foreign exchange risks. Analysts caution, however, that any major sell-off of dollar assets could cause the U.S. currency to plunge and send financial markets reeling and undercut the value of its remaining dollar assets. 8. lol. We go through this every year this time. Same questions. Reality Check (DA), IMO, the only debates that are missing are. 1. Religious vs non-religious (Attacks against Islam, etc) 2. Group A vs Group B (groupie based discussions is much hated by the average nomad here. It divides nomads here, forces people to quit the forum and damages quality when things get personal.) Everything else is pretty much the same. There are more active topics and more traffic than ever before. As for the nomads' love with politics these days, this is what I said to professor NGONGE on this issue. "NGONGE, the ICU is the best story that came out of Somalia in sixteen years. ICU is hot. People love hot topics. Have you noticed people who never paid attention to politics are making comments there now. To simply put it, ICU = Islam + Politics + Camel Milk Debate. It is one of the few hot stories that can create multiple interests. But expect this craze to die down as the tradition goes here. There is something hot every couple of months. For now, many nomads are interested in the ICU story and the best forum to go for that story is the Politics forum." I've always emphasized that if you love exciting topics, create them. If you see an interesting topic on another website, post it here and spicy it up. Don't expect to come here and find tons of "good topics" if you are not doing your part. Remember, this is a community which thrives on "excitement" and active topics posted by others. It is so easy to come here and enjoy reading the many exciting topics SOL has to offer, but if you don't find something you like here, the best way to remedy the situation is to visit other websites such as google, technorati, youtube or whatever, and find good topics to post for others. The process becomes contagious. Don't be a leech. On the other hand, if you are the type of a nomad who enjoys hot, long debates, either pick a topic and start your own, or select one of the active topics and turn it into a hot debate. It is actually not that hard to pick a controversial topic, say some outrageous things and boom ... you have nomads lining up to crucify you. As for the missing nomads, they usually come back after their schedule improves. I know Castro, CaanoGeel, Baashi, Serenity and Sheherazade have slowed down due to work schedule/lack of "open" internet access at work or Ramadan affect. The situation usually corrects itself and Insha Allah you will see them more often. It has happened to all of us. Marba qof baa la yara waayaa oo waqtigu ciriiri ku noqdaa. I need to find Pierre/Farah and Tychwania. Any word on their marriage? There are couple of nomads missing after Ramadan as well. What happened to our sister Rahima? Salaama

  12. Good article. I was just reading up on MOG today. The city is rich in history. The following picture shows how Mogadishu was laid out. City planning was uncomplicated and elegant. In the early days it gave the impression of being a gorgeous, world class city, but the civil war has now dented its image.

  18. Australia is one of the worst Australia cleric defended in rape remarks Sydney (dpa) - A controversial cleric who said women who didn't wear a veil were "uncovered meat" asking to be raped will keep his job as the spiritual leader of Australia's 350,000 Muslims. Sheik Taj Din al-Hilali was confirmed as Mufti of Australia on Friday after the governing body of Sydney's largest mosque rallied behind the Egyptian-born cleric. "The board is satisfied with the notion that certain statements made by the mufti was misinterpreted," Tom Zreika, head of the Lebanese Muslim Association, told local radio. Zreika said the mufti would take "two or three months" off from preaching. Prime Minister John Howard, who hand-picked al-Hilali for a 14- member Muslim advisory panel, said remarks in Arabic in a fasting- month sermon to 500 worshippers that compared unveiled women to food left for stray cats were "appalling and reprehensible." Howard warned Muslims they risked a backlash from other Australians if they continued to defend al-Hilali against mainstream opinion. "If it is not resolved, then unfortunately people will run around saying 'Well, the reason they didn't get rid of him is because secretly some of them support his views,'" Howard said. A year ago there were pitched battles on Sydney beaches between white youths and men of Arabic descent. The Cronulla riots were described as the worst outbreak of racial violence in Australia's history. Others in Howard's government have called on al-Hilali to be prosecuted for inciting sexual assault, or to be deported. "If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden, or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it ... whose fault is it, the cats' or the uncovered meat? The uncovered meat is the problem," al- Hilali said. In an address that was tape-recorded by The Australian newspaper, Al-Hilali said a woman who stayed home and was veiled would be safe from sexual assault. "If she was in her room, in her home, in her hajib (veil), no problem would have occurred." Sex Discrimination Commissioner Pru Goward, appointed by Howard to the high-profile post, said suspending al-Hilali for a few weeks was not punishment enough. "This is a very sensitive time for Australian-Islamic relationships and this sort of excusing only confirms, I am afraid in some people's minds, that there is no serious desire to treat women and men equally and to treat them respectfully," Goward said. The 66-year-old apologized for offence caused by the comments, saying he had "only intended to protect women's honour," but he refused to withdraw them or resign. Al-Hilali has stirred controversy before. He has denied the Holocaust, defended suicide bombers, described the 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States as "God's work," and blamed Jews for "all the wars and problems that threaten the peace and stability of all the world." Al-Hilali, who has not mastered English despite having lived in Australia for 24 years, referred in his sermon to gang rapes in Sydney in 2000 that led to several Muslims being sentenced to long jail terms. He was critical of the judges, saying they had shown no mercy. Only white women were victims in the gang rapes, and they were told they were targeted because they were "Aussie pigs." Al-Hilali also caused consternation by saying women were mostly to blame for adultery. "When it comes to adultery, it's 90 per cent the woman's responsibility," he said. "Why? Because a woman possesses the weapon of seduction." Waleed Aly, a spokesman for the Islamic Council of Victoria, condemned al-Hilali and called for his resignation, saying his views sought to normalize immoral sexual behaviour. "We would have liked to have seen some form of fairly strong censure just given the magnitude and the gravity of the comments," Aly said. But other prominent Australian Muslims kept quiet. Imam Abdul Jalil Sajid, the chairman of the Muslim Council of Great Britain, who is visiting Australia, sprang to his defence. "I know he is one of the greatest Muslim scholars on earth and Australia is blessed with him," Sajid said.
  19. Coffee and controversy in "Little Mogadishu" 27/10/2006 01:14 By Andrew Cawthorne ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - It’s not hard to start an argument in the cafes of the Ethiopian capital’s "Little Mogadishu" district. Mention politics back home -- or the threat of war between Ethiopia and Somalia’s Islamists -- and the shouting starts. "The Islamic Courts are al Qaeda. Ethiopia should go in and get rid of them -- now!" exclaims Osman Nur, a 64-year-old carpenter and refugee from Somalia’s Puntland region, with a thump that rattles the coffee cups on his table. "Not true!" responds another man, shaking his fist as he stands nearby at the pavement cafe in this hub of Somali refugees and ethnically Somali Ethiopians. "I support the Islamic Courts, so do others. They have brought peace," he adds, drawing a tide of derision from Nur’s friends that eventually drives him away. The exchange highlights the divisions and dangers in Somalia, where the Islamists’ rise has dented the authority of an interim government intended to end 15 years of anarchy. The situation is tense too here in neighbouring Ethiopia, which has promised to intervene if the Islamists attack that government or enter Ethiopia. The Islamists say they are simply bringing law and order, but critics including Ethiopia say they are led by extremists. A reporter’s morning wander round "Little Mogadishu" showed most opposed to the Islamists: perhaps not surprising, given they are in Ethiopia and that many come from places like Puntland in north Somalia which the Islamists do not hold. "All the Islamic Courts have brought to Somalia is guns," said Yusuf Jama, 56, a farmer from Puntland who has been in Ethiopia for two years seeking passage to Sweden. A few, however, did express Islamist sympathies, but were chased away by others or asked not to be named. "It’s too dangerous here. We are surrounded by informants," one young man from Mogadishu said in a side-alley. ’FIGHTING COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE’ Tens of thousands of Somalis live in Addis Ababa, but precise numbers are difficult because of the blurred distinctions between native Somalis and the six percent of Ethiopians of Somali ethnicity. Ethiopia’s eastern ****** region is almost entirely Somali and was the scene of a devastating 1977-78 war when Soviet-backed Ethiopia defeated a Somali invasion. Addis fears the Islamists aspire to folding ****** into a "Greater Somalia". "They are threatening the whole of the Horn of Africa," said Omar Muse, 18, who left the Somali port of Kismayu five months ago, before the Islamists took it over. Most of the Somali refugees in "Little Mogadishu" recounted long and dangerous treks into Ethiopia by foot, road and mule. Ambushes were common and hunger widespread. "It is very tough," said Abdi Hassan Farah. The 61-year-old, with an orange-tinged beard typical of elder Somalis, said he came into Ethiopia in 2005 after drought and fighting wiped out his sheep and goat herds. Once in Addis, the Somalis join a well-organised network of compatriots who live off remittances from relatives. As well as the ubiquitous cafes where the men gather, the streets of "Little Mogadishu" are replete with telephone and money transfer shops. Muslim women lay their wares on blankets on the floor, while the odd goat and sheep nibbles on rotting food. Among the shacks and more humble homes, however, lie the larger walled compounds of those Somalis who have set up flourishing businesses here. And while the majority seem to be looking for a ticket to Europe or the United States, some have long-term commitments. Ibrahim Jamma, who came from the self-declared independent Somali enclave of Somaliland in 2003, runs a small private school, the Somali Education Centre. "Somalia has such great potential," he said, as young Somalis were tutored in British accents prior to a hoped-for transfer. "What our future generations need is education, not more arguing and conflict."
