  7. I saw this in one of the Somali websites and was saddened by its contents. An African woman wrapped in religion When it rains in Africa, it pours, literally buckets. I was driving down the street in Nairobi by the infamous Florida Bar when I saw a shadow of a person in front of the headlights of my car. It seemed to be a woman, drenched, soaked, plain wet, and it did not look like it was going to get any better. I stopped my car, threw open the door and said "Habari!" She looked at me and said "mzuri," which meant good but it was certainly out of habit and not a reflections as to how things were. She climbed into the car, and due to her wetness from the the windows fogged and I did a rare thing in Africa, turning my window defogger on. I looked at her as she took the covering off of her head and could tell immediately by her skin color, shape of face, that she was a Somali. "Where are you going?" She wanted to go to Eastleigh, the little Mogadishu of Nairobi. This area had been given to Somali soldiers during British Colonial rule and remained a bit of Somalia in Kenya filled with mosques, women covered in black and only a slit for their eyes, men with beards and names like Ibrahim. When walking around the markets you could smell spices, the smell of roasted goat on an open fire, the sounds of hawkers and the call to prayer from the minaret of the nearby mosques. She wanted to go Eastleigh, not the safest place this late hour of the night. The last time I had been there during daylight, my car had been stripped in minutes of anything that could be removed. It certainly was not my destination of choice, but then could I just dump this person unceremoniously just a few feet from where I picked her up? It was too late for the Bus service to run, and I was out of cash on hand for a taxi. Off we drove, toward Eastleigh... "What were you doing in town?" was my question to her. She told me that she came almost every night to the Florida nightclub and was hoping to find a man she could marry and then live with him. She said that life had been hard since she left Mogadishu, that she saw her husband killed when men came to her house, and they shot her in the shoulder and left for dead with her baby screaming on the floor. She looked young, but she had lived a painful life at her young age. Now she was here, and even though she did not tell me, I could tell by the way she dressed that she was a prostitute, that she sold herself, just to get enough for food, rent, and a few other things, most of all support for her family. She was wearing a miniskirt, a halter-top revealing her midriff and she had used a konga wrap around on top of her head to cover her from the rain. Her name was Sophia, and she had come to Nairobi a year ago by plane, leading me to believe that at one time she had been wealthy for African standards. Yet I also knew that as a non-Kenyan, she could not legitimately work here and that was one of the reasons why she was in prostitution. I looked over to her as I was driving and felt her inner pain; she misunderstood and asked me if I wanted her to come home with me tonight. I simply smiled and thanked her and told her something about being too old...we both laughed and I drove on. As we did she did something strange, or so it appeared, she took the Konga wrap and used it as a skirt, taking another one out of her bag and using it to cover her head and upper body...I knew we were coming closer to her neighborhood and if she wanted to get into her home safely she could not remain dressed as she was. I asked her if she was a Muslim, and of course I knew the answer, I also knew that she as a Somali was circumcised like all other women from her culture including some famous ones like the model "Iman." Yes, she was returning to her male dominated world ruled by fear and superstition. Where women like her would be stoned and buried in a shallow grave without any further thought. By now we were in little Mogadishu, she gave me some final instructions and soon I was at the place where she lived. She asked if I could give her my address. I gave her my business card and she thanked me as she exited into the night. (Africans are into networking and will always ask for address and phone numbers and one will always receive a call in the future, part of the strong survival instincts) As I drove back to my home on Ngong Road, many thoughts passed through my head. Were we not all like Sophia, putting on the coverings over our real self...living a pretense life in front of others, afraid of being authentic, the real us? I looked back over my own life, and how many times I allowed someone to bully me into acting in a certain manner because it was expected of me. How many times did I live an image a pretend and not the real me. Authenticity, how often did it escape me? I also saw what religion does without Grace...here was a woman mutilated, numbed from feeling closeness with the person who was to be her husband and lover, because her society saw sexuality as an evil thing to be subdued by taking the pleasure out of it. Religion where God is a giant No, where people like Sophia had to dress in a certain way in order to find acceptance and safety, to conform to an image of what is right set down by someone else. My thoughts went to women as a whole in the African society. I was in a country, where parliament had just overwhelmingly voted against the rights of a woman, allowing wife beatings to continue, where all over East Africa women were second hand citizens. Daughters not enrolled in school because there was no need to educate a woman who would just raise the children. Where women had to give out sexual favors to gain or keep employment. Where most girls were sexually abused by the time they reached 14...Incest being the hidden sin in Africa. Yes, I could understand why Sophia covered herself, why she pretended to be what she was not...but the reality of it is - "don't we all?"...
  8. Horn I know I can't change what you believe is right but I will try.In 1972 the Somali government appointed a committee to draft the Somali language. That committee after examing the various scripts decided to adopt the latin script. Also considered were Arabic,Usmaniya and an older script used in Saylac known as Far Gadabursii.A committee normally compromises of several people and if I'm not mistaked that committee was made up of 7 individuals.I fail to understand first why one person can then turn around and claim to have been the brain behind this..... Having explained that to you I will now try to also explain something else...How can that committee claim this when high school students in Amoud and Sheikh were writing themseleves lil notes in Somali in the latin script as far back as the 1950's to avoid their English teachers from busting them..If Shire Jamac was the pioneer don't you think he should have been the 1st person to write Somali in latin?
  9. Very good read Rahima.Thx for sharing and shedding light on Islamic financing.

  11. Sam I suppose my theory still stands then.FT's issue is a smoke screen to relocate the capitol city..... I think after the foreign observer team thats supposed to assess the situation in Xamar leave we might see a change in tactics.Something on the lines of Xamar cant be tamed and we need a capitol to operate out of.I'm sure Abdillahi knows his continuing legitimacy/support among the international community depends on his ability to relocate to any place within Somalia as soon as possible. Anybody with a different opinion plz share that with us.
  12. That totally eluded me Sam.Thx for the update....
  13. GnP Maybe that man with the qaat pictured you in his moment of mirqaan looking beautiful in a hijab...No wrong there I suppose knowing how you would look very beautiful in it... As for VR's boots wat can I say they take ma breath away when ever I see them....that of course matched with a black hijab....Aaah breath taking.....
  14. Sky I know you wont believe this but I heard your argument before, well honestly 14 times before to be specific so thats why I say lets not get over ourselves here. One issue at a time.I think a wise reer Xamar said it well when he/she said canjeero sidey u kala.... the rest I'm sure you know. The issue is foreign troops and if you wish to stretch it a bit relocation of the capitol...... Try to to stick to that sky. Sam I missed the decision on the relocation, could you please update that for me. PS I'm in the mood today for some intellectual debate, lets please make sure that it stays that way instead of the usual snide remarks we have become accustommed to lately....
  15. Sam Lets not become over enthusitastic over foreign troops. You never know what they bring. As someone with no stake in this issue I I think that idea sucks. If we go by your estimate and conclude that its only a handful of the people that oppose foreign troops then I would ask you to look no further than 1993 when the US government tried something similar. What happened we all know granted though the US had both the firepower and the finances to slug it out yet they chose to leave.Back then many were saying it was only a subclan who were involved. If we make the same assessment and say its only the wadaads this time round then its for certain that this is doomed from the word get go. On the issue of relocation I personally think that is where Abdullahi is heading. The whole issue of foreign troops is just a smoke screen to divert attention from his real motive of moving the capitol to somewhere else more friendly to his rule.I could be proven wrong here but all arrows point to that direction.....
  16. The situtation in Mogadisho is beyond tribes. If this was in the 90's I would agree but the scenerio there now is beyond tribes or one warlord against another. It is at a point where it now has a multitude of actors who are driven by personal profit rather than qabiil.I think the wise people of Mogadisho now know that and are willing to sacrifice all and everything to live in peace once again. Its just that the solution chosen by the TFG wasn't one they had anticipated.A more prudent approach would have sufficed to meet their support.
  17. Sultan I know the problem is a little more complicated than it was in Somaliland and Egal but the current approach by the TFG will lead to further bloodshed. The colonel I think in his inaugrul speech said something on the lines of I'm a man of peace and I will work with those who work in the day and I will work with those who work at night. He now has to prove that his words were more than just words.
  18. I know quite a good number of Somalis in the IT world making well over six figures.Maybe the folks you mentioned are seeking IT work in the wrong city.If thats the case ask them to try out areas where the IT industries are.Entry level positions usually are in the mid 50's depending on ones ability to negotiate. Now back to the topic I think we all need to realize that if a parent reprimands you its normally as a result of good intentions on their part and a feeling of collective responsibilty for all Somali kids. Its upto you to accept or refuse but however one decides to approach that I would advise that it be done with utmost respect.
  19. I think the issue of foreign troops for Somalia brings to mind the ongoing civil strife in Lebanon.A smaller country being ruled by a more powerful neighbour. In the case of Somalia, sorry South Somalia I think deployment of soldiers from Ethiopia would mean not only do they control the government but also the land.I doubt if their intentions are to pacify the unruly crowd and those who think so are reading too deeply into the rhetoric and propoganda of the TFG.I strongly doubt where the US army failed a ragtag army from third world countries will succeed. Now that does not however mean that the situation should be left as it is.A more well thought out plan should be devised to sort this problem. One last note before I sign off.As an example Somaliland in 1991 was more or less in the same chaotic situation as present day Somalia.Ina Egal came up with something called Qarameyn. It meant employing the clan militias and their hardware as the national army under the command of the government instead of the various tribes.Retraining them, getting them uniforms and making sure that they get paid every month. This was possible with the meagre resources at Ina Egal's disposal. I fail to see why Ina Yusuf with access to huge chunks of foreign aid and goodwill from the world can fail in such an endeavor if he approachs it with real good intentions. What ever avenue is pursued I do wish that the peace so many yearn for is achieved without further bloodshed.

LST, Its indeed an unacceptable for anyone with a true somali blood to make such a statement abt the destruction of Hargeysa or any somali city for that matter but I personally asked this Singub himself and told me that he never said such a thing. Qudhac and and co. should either bring an evidence or stop this baseless accusations and threats from the corners of SOL. Reer Hargeysa vowed to kill Singub in revenge for Mohamed Moge and they could not do this when he was living at Dhagaxbuur...a very short distant from Hargeysa, and one wonders when and how this 15 yrs old promise will be fulfilled. Reer hargeysa vowed to kill singub for Mooge.I haven't heard that before. Its all new to me.I guess people will start saying things left and right just to sound knowledgeable.Laba aan isku digmiim meel lama wado keeno.Mooge was a diehard educated nationalist (incase you wondering Somali nationalist)Singub what can I say we all know but I firmly believe a man is entitled to his opinion and he expressed his eloquently.I hope he knows he can say whatever is in his heart and mind after all he is in a free nation.
  23. Population wise I know for a fact Burco city is the largest city in the East and its estimated at around 250,000 ppl.I doubt if any city even comes close to half that population....I guess many people might be including the camels, donkeys and wild animals in and around LA to even come close to that figure.Like one poster mentioned the Sahara desert is one huge landmass but empty of people. Wind Talker Laga barey laga baddi ma maqashey.Your news I suppose is yesterdays like all your other stuff.Ka maanta is a bit different The word baaniyal is used in Hargeisa to define a stingy daneeyste.
