Originally posted by Abu_Diaby- Al Zeylaci: Most OF Somali culture is defined as men riding camels, singing songs to them and writing great poetry. You see, the guys that are blacksmiths and agriculturalists are left out. Women; ku waba iskada. We, also apparently defeated the British and the Italians, although our great Mullah did end up defeated and died in exile in Oromo Land. We also had the best Army in Africa, and Siyad Bare was a saint or hitler( depending on what side of the fence you family sits on). And yes, we have great dances and we can move that the move. My point is that: to what extent do cultural things really matter to Somalis West. I think not much. Most of us who live and grew up in the West are not totally engrossed in Somali culture and we never will be. Marx, what aspects of Somali culture should people in the West be taught about? I would simply be happy if my kids( inshallah) obeyed my orders, did well at school, stayed away from trouble and were good muslims. I wouldn't want to be one of these fake timajilcs who is rupinder at home, but robbie at school and the west. the end. ( this reminds of my sixth form, somalis in the lower high school had to come up with a display about their country and culture; in the end there had to two big posters for Somalia and SOmaliland) Wax barta aan baraara gaarnee Most of Somali culture is not defined as men riding camels or reciting moving poems. Somali culture is more inclusive and gender blind then most critics admit. Few years back I went to one of the local universities and borrowed an eight-hour documentary series called “The Africans” by professor Ali Mazrui of Princeton University. It was really fascinating how the professor summarized the cultural heritage, and political development of modern Somalia then. The documentary was made around 1986. Xaawo Taako, he noted, stood at the center of Mogadishu as a symbol of Somalia’s struggle against Italian colonialism. It’s interesting that the statute of stone-thrower depicted the heroism of Somali masses while Xaawo’s statute with the gushing blood as a result of enemy hit epitomized individual courage. If Wiil Waal was a clever political leader, Arraweelo was even shrewder and her reign resulted in far reaching political alignment. If Cigaal Shiidaad, the Coward, represented the stuff of mirth and hilarity, Dhagdheer, the Long Eared, represented a terrifying character that ate human’s alive---a gender polarity that breaks traditional stereotypes. If Mattan Ciideed was a nomad warlord who sat up roadblocks and raided trade caravans from Berbera, Saxarla…(you got my drift). So this culture that glorifies camel riding men and ignores the rest of the society is inexistent as far as Somalia is concern. edit: also,if Sayid was a mullah warrior, Sh. Aweys was a peaceful one Reducing Somalia’s political evolution and its long history to Barre’s two-decade rule and the subsequent divisions it resulted is quite unfair. Equally unfair is the notion of equating any political discussion regarding Somalia to divisive clannish talk. That sort of naiveté kills the genuine spirit of Somali nationalism… Marx has a reputation of youthful bantering, but this post of his is truly an intellectual bullet. NGONGE may find some holes in Marx thesis but that’s just NGONGE. Somali culture is important. How important? Very, very important !

Kashafa, concede this one awoowe. Dont waste your time searching it. IT IS as I told you. In fact none of the three sheekhs you named were part of that particular war.

^^I have never been fond of answering hypothetical questions. But of course if the caravan approach does not produce desired results (it has worked magically so far mind you), we will have to evaluate the situation and consider alternatives. But I can assure you any alternative shall never include internal fighting within Somali people. That should be avoided as much as humanly possible. Enough Somalis have died already. We suggest capable Somali men to marry four wives to make up the deficit that has come about as a result of 18 years of civil war.

It's all in your twisted head Kashka. You misunderstand what the primary tasks are before Sh.Sharif. It’s NOT in his priority to challenge whatever little fiefdoms there is in Somalia today, yours included. We are addressing strategic obstacles first. We are elevating the discussion. You are stuck with warlord mentality. You keep counting how many regions you control while we labor how could Somalia, the country itself, transition from this painful tragedy. We are not at war with you. You are at war with us. But since the election of Sh. Sharif you have been apparently thrown out of balance and lost the heart of your argument. You are the tail. And we are the head! Notice the difference awoowe.
-
btw Sh. Aweys and Sh. H alasow played positive role by warning the Gulwade Camp to prepare for Aydiid's offense. But Kashafa as good man as he is , this time unfortunately the facts are not with him.

^^Nin madax adag maahi, you can easily prove what you are saying awoowe. You may never know if I was there edit: Kashafa, maxaa kugu xanbaarayya waxaadan hubin inaad ku doodo awoowe?

^^Adeer, or abti as you prefer, ha igu xanaaqin. My approach is simple. When I see an actionable misstatement of material fact, I feel the duty to disclose it ya Kashka. And this is no different. And you and the professor you quoted are ignorant about the basic facts of Somali conflict. I on the other hand am its student. There is this thing called theoretical possibility. And there is a tangible reality on the ground. Sharif and the entity he heads is a practical matter. It’s the product of a political compromise. It has two-year contract to make things better, and chart a new beginning. You and your puritan stuff represent a distant shout, however. The challenge is real for Sharif, but it’s not insurmountable awoowe. Tell the professor that his defeatist talk is not new. We’ve heard it before…

Originally posted by Kashafa: quote: Sh Dahir Aweys, the man who took up arms against the USC and Gen Aided AUN during the battle of Kismayo Actually, it was called the Battle of Araare. It was the battle where Xaq and Baatil lakala saaray. It was the battle where Aideed and his USC militia, in hot pursuit of fleeing defenceless men, women, and children, were stopped and bloodied by the Mujahideen of the Two Xasans: Shaykh Xasan Daahir Aweys and Shaykh Xasan Turki. It was the battle where Peacenik Scholar Abdulqaadir Gacamey(he who is still 'talking' and 'speaking out', even as scholars are being tortured and locked up) counseled surrender and submission to Aideed and it was the battle where Shakyh Xasan Daahir Aweys refused anything but the sword. That decision of his, to stand and fight, against the armoured military might of Aided saved the lives of tens(if not hundreds) of thousands of fleeing civillians, buying them enough time reach Kenya. Had the Mujahideen, then known as Itihaad, followed the advice of Peacenik Gacamay, many nomads that are typing frivolously on these board might not have been alive. But no, they told Gacamay to take hike.(who promptly scurried back to Bosaaso preaching peacenik'ism). They stood. They fought. And they died. Almost to the man. And thousands of Somalis owe them their lives and owe them eternal gratitude. It was a battle that will live in Honour as long as thoroughbreds ride and thoroughbreds breathe. I will inshallah dedicate a thread to discuss the lessons of the Battle of Araare. Very few men, in the history of Somali-dom, have done for Islam and Somalia what Shaykh Aweys has done. Despite his shortcomings as a leader, he will forever be rightly remembered as the Somali Mujadid of the 20th century. He will be remembered as the man who exhorted Umada Soomaliyeed oo Xalaasha ah to stand up and FIGHT. FIGHT against Gumaysi. FIGHT against Qabyaalad. FIGHT against Dulmi. FIGHT against Isbahaysiga Kufr wal Nifaaq. FIGHT against Shahaado la dirrir. FIGHT against Shirqool'ka Ja'Booty. All those who hate on Shaykh-ul-Soomaal Xasan Daahir Aweys, may you burn forever with the cuqdad and bitterness that consumes you and with the inferiority complex that you have been raised with since childhood. May the eyes of cowards never find rest in sleep. May they die the same way they have lived their lives: on their knees. Allahuma Ameen. Yours yaa Kashka is nice sentiment to be sure but it’s historically inaccurate and full of empty talk. As always you pour out emotional stuff and in the process disregard the facts of the matter. Sh. Xassan Dahir did not participate in the battle of Araare. Sh. Gacmey was not in Kismayo at the time. The battle was between the Gulwade Mucaskar and Aydiid’s forces. It’s beyond me why you slander Sh. Gacmey to lionize Sh. Xassan. Both Sheekhs have been friends for a long time. They do not necessarily see eye to eye on every issue, but their bound of Islam and brotherhood goes beyond this Nintendo talk of yours. For those implying Sh. Aweys had association with Aydid, arrintaas Allaah baa wax idinka oran. Waxyaalo waxaa jira aan hadalka laysku deeqsiinkarin...

Kashafa, adeer dont check back with us in the next six months. Xaajadu waa iska caddahay. Marmarsiiyyo aad dhiig ku daadisid ma weyneysid. Culumo ma lihid. Dam-dam baad rabtaa inaad reerka ku rogto. Waa lagu fahmay. Somalia has a government. It's weak and fragile. It’s not independent. It’s not free from outside interference. But rest assured, it will gradually (slowly but surely) transition into a powerful authority. Today’s inadequacies will be vastly improved and overcome. It will take time though. Al-isticjaal is devil’s sport. Patience and perseverance are primary means for sustainable victory. Somalia and its people will never run out of stamina awoowe. Somalia has no room for your fake absolutism. This phony puritan ideology is quite dangerous. It’s meant to create instability that’s conducive for Somalia’s enemy to dominate and keep us down. We refuse to be an empty space awoowe as others would like to depict us. It’s ironic your objectives of perpetual war regardless of the cost perfectly converges with Ethiopia’s and other indifferent force’s objectives to keep Somalia a testing ground for containment policies. Foreign forces are not needed. If they come they will not come out of love and conviction. They will only come out of convenience to satisfy prior arrangements. It’s a setback to see them coming when they supposed to leave. That much I admit. But to say Somali blood needs be spelt simply because few regiments of OAU troops arrived is mindless. Mindless. It’s as though Kashafa enjoys Somali tragedy and the uprooting of the innocent. Subxaana Laah. We will talk this out. Those who find fighting more effective than talking will be insha Allaah ineffective as they have before.

Mentor young people Great idea. Count me in on this. In fact, I am willing to volunteer and mentor you, Marx. Celebrate Somali cultural heritage Excellent suggestion. How should we go about this? Recite poems? Promote and foster an appreciation of Somali History Maasha Allah. You deserve a ring for this, Marx. Here is what I propose to foster an appreciation of Somali History: 1- A topic about Somalia’s role in advancing Islam in East Africa and the emergence of Muslim Emirates in the region. 2- The birth of resistance movement to rebel against European colonialism 3- The establishment of Somali republic, and the subsequent unification of the country. Explain the complex issues affecting Somalis Music to my ears, as they say. This is certainly one sure way to win NGONGE and MARX back and have them advance the big Somali idea, instead of wasting talent on small projects.

Yes Gheele, Abdiwahid studied in Pakistan. Wasiir, I do believe this will be an informational session, and not a political argument of separatism. If it however turns out that way, count on me to expose the myth. I am sure that kind of argument will not come from the Sheekh. Abdiwahid. But we have got to be ready though for you may never when little Mujahid Red comes with..... -

I am going, Insha Allah. Because of Sh. CWahid many people will go to listen his findings, observations, and what he generally has to say about that region’s judicial development after spending four months in SL. -

^^Adeer I admire your Zulu-like warrior quality, but the world is more intricate than your mere assertions of car i taabo would allow. NGONGE is not going to be proud of you as he once did if he reads your lousy argument here. The fact that current Transitional Somali government is unable to expand its authority to many regions is due to other reasons, and does not necessarily suggest yours is an irreversible reality. Also, that Somali republic existed on unshakable legal grounds as far as its territorial integrity and jurisdictional authority is concern has never been a point of contention. Even your superiors are not making that revisionist argument. They never did. Why bother to make it now if not out of desperation? Never mind answering, it's a rhetorical q. I am done with this.

Oodweyne, Adeer waxaagu waa tororog, arguing against the legality of the 1960 union is a losing argument. I know that you know it, it's just the desperation that compells you to try this one just like you attempted to justify your existence on colonial borders.
