  7. the shelling is real and devastating to the city and its people, but who is to blame? ==================== ==================== ======== Somali capital heavily shelled in renewed fighting By MOHAMED OLAD HASSAN Friday, May 22, 2009 MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — Hundreds of Somali government troops attacked insurgent-held positions north and south of the capital on Friday and the heart of the city was heavily shelled, witnesses said. One said a busload of fleeing civilians was hit. Shelling was heavy on a major north-south route through the city, Wadnaha Road, which the Islamic fighters took earlier this month, area resident Abdi Haji said. It is one of the four main roads in the capital, Mogadishu. Friday's surge in fighting, following a few days' lull in a strong insurgent advance on Mogadishu, has killed at least 13 people and wounded dozens, residents and an independent radio station said. Resident Abdullahi Mohamud Sugow said he saw the bus shelled in the Hawl Wadag district. "It was grisly scene. I can't tell you anything more," he said, before hanging up the phone. Pictures of the fighting showed gunmen crouched behind the ruins of shell-pocked buildings and bodies lying in the streets. In one photo, a man clutches a wounded child to his chest in the back of a car, his shirt reddened with the blood streaming from the child's face. In another, a man's lower jaw has been torn away by a bullet or piece of shrapnel. Editor Abdirahman Yusuf Al-Adala of the independent ratio station Shabelle Media Network also said a stray bullet killed journalist Abdirisaq Warsame Mohamed as he headed to work. The Islamist insurgents are attempting to dislodge the U.N.-backed government from the few blocks of the capital it still controls. But the government is supported by 4,350 African Union peacekeepers, who are helping hold key installations such as the port, the airport and the presidential palace. Government commander-in-chief Lt. Yusuf Osman Dumal said the fighting Friday began when Islamists attacked government positions. But residents said the government used the temporary respite to reinforce and re-equip the troops under its control and that it appeared to be a planned government offensive. Defense Minister Mohamed Abdi Gandi said the government launched the attack "to defend its people and defeat its opponents." "We have captured new bases. We have conquered areas controlled by rebel groups," he said at a news conference in the capital. "We will continue the offensive against the rebels until we impose our authority all over the country." But insurgents said they had repelled the government forces. "The so-called government has attacked our bases. We have beaten them back and they retreated to their former stations," a spokesman for the insurgent Islamic Party, Muse Abdi Arale, said. The United Nations reports that around 49,000 residents have fled the fighting in the capital, and the humanitarian situation is dire. Many families live without access to food or water under trees or by the side of roads sheltered by nothing more than a few scraps of plastic. On Wednesday, regional leaders reaffirmed their support for the beleaguered government and said more support was needed for the AU peacekeeping mission. Somalia has been torn apart by fighting since warlords overthrew a socialist dictator in 1991. The arid Horn of Africa nation is now controlled by clan warlords and criminal militias and wracked by a civil war between Islamist insurgents backed by Eritrea and a precarious new U.N.-backed government struggling to assert its control. 8. Somalia's defense minister, the man of the hour Somalia Government Announces Plan to Defeat Insurgents in Mogadishu MOGADISHU (HOL) - The Transitional Federal Government (TFG) has announced it plans to defeat insurgent forces in Mogadishu who recently took control of parts of Mogadishu. Speaking in a press conference in Mogadishu, the TFG’s Defence Minister Prof. Mohamed Abdi Gaandi said that the TFG started systemic plans aimed at taking control of the entire city. Prof. Minister added that the TFG has been forced to fight and defeat insurgents after insurgents have attacked government forces in Mogadishu. Prof. Gaandi added that after the Djibouti Reconciliation Conference the TFG invited opposition groups to dialogue and peace talks but insurgents refused to participate in peace talks and tried to overthrow the TFG. “The TFG would defend the people and the country of Somalia and will take control of Mogadishu” said the Defence Minister who added that the TFG will gradually and systemically gain control of the entire city while doing all it can to minimize civilian casualties. The Minister called on the Somali people to support the TFG in its efforts to take control of Mogadishu while emphasizing that the TFG has not abandoned its efforts to solve the country’s problems through peaceful means and negotiations. On the other hand, Mr. Muuse Arraale who spoke on behalf of Hisbul Islam, one of the insurgent groups fighting the government, said that TGF soldiers attacked based occupied by their forces and that their forces repelled government soldiers.

  15. Emp & Duke are confused as ever . they like the tfg pm yet despise the man who chose him. they have defeatist tone toward tfg troops, yet like thier commander (he was demoted but still remain very signifant in this fight). confused and conflicted, they are harmless
  16. looooooool@he's no Riyaale after all the kids, geeljires, and keligi muslims are the ones ka tookha from the cyber space awoowe. those fighting in mogadishu waa rag, hadday rabaan ha qaldanaadeene I have no gripe with you ngonge. you are able man who can put forth a reasonable arguments if he wants to. in this instance, you are arguing for the sake of argument, falling in love with your own rhetoric. Instead of commenting on the conflict itself, you chose to talk about positions one took few years ago. It’s silly really to argue about why sharif fought with former tfg when one considers the context of that war and dynamics of that specific fight. I can understand Kashafa and know how to deal with his froths. Yours is a wise man who slipped.
  17. NG, where are your comments on Burco? i was waiting it.

  20. Dr. Michael A. Weinstein is a curious man who still remains in the dark when it comes to the current Islamic movements in Somalia. Alshabaab is an offshoot of alqaida There is no ARS to speak off Aweys is a conflicted man, his alliance with alshabaab is a matter of convenience, not out of conviction, and ideologically he is closer to Sh. Bashir than alshabaab. Xizbul Islam, is a sham coalition originally created to balance alshabaab militarily (after alshabaab refused to be part of any new unity organization) in the south, it comprises desperate (geographically) entities. In their camps, they listen sheekh Umul of Nairobi, don’t be fooled Omer Iimaan does not represent them. They are not the problem. Sharif is not the product of any organized Islamic movements; he is a politician who has ikhwaani inclination. But he is very smart man, and consensus builder.
  21. Cumar C/rashid: 'Waxaa u diyaargarownay dagaal' 22 May 22, 2009 - 11:43:46 PM Ra'iisul wasaaraha Somalia Cumar C/rashiid Cali Sharmaarke ayaa markii ugu horeysay sheegay in dowladiisu ay dagaal la galayso kooxaha mucaaradka ah ee ka horjeeda, kuwaasoo wada dagaalo ay ku majo-xaabinayaan xukuumada jirta. Sharma'arke wuxuu sheegay in kooxaha dagaalka kula jira dowlada aysan doonayn nabad ka dhalata Somalia, isagoo ku sheegay waxa ay yaqaanaan dagaal, xukuumadiisuna ay u diyaargarowday. "Al-shabaab ma lahan wax ajande siyaasadeed ah, waxayna wataan dagaalyahano shisheeye ah, si ay dalkan uga dhigaan mid aan ka bixin fowdo iyo rabshado, inaguna waxaan balanqaadnay inaan dagaal la galno" ayuu yiri Sharma'arke oo wareysi siiyay Reuters. Ra'iisul wasaaraha Somalia oo markii la magacaabay [Feb 2009] sheegay inuu kooxaha dowlada ka horjeeda sida Al-shabaab ku wajahayo nabad iyo wadahadal, ayaa markaan u muuqda mid u xuubsiibtay inuu Somalia ku xaliyo xabad iyo dagaal. "Ma filayo inay jiraan fursado kale oo lagula fariisan karo mucaaradka, si looga hadlo waxa la isku hayo, waxa keliya ee aan fahmayno waa inay doonayaan dagaal, waxaana diyaar u nahay inaan ciribtirno" ayuu yiri ra'iisul wasaaraha Somaila. Cumar C/rashiid, wuxuu sheegay in ciidamada dowladu ay eryanayaan 300-dagaalyahano shisheeye ah, kuwaasoo ka barbar dagaalamayay Al-shabaab, balse haatan dibada uga baxay magaalada Muqdisho. "Shabaab iyo dagaalyahanada ajnabiga ah ee caawinaya dagaalkoodu ma ahan mid ujeedo leh, magaalo ayay tagayaan wayna ka baxayaan; dagaalkooduna waa mid ku saleysan ku-dhufo-oo-ka-dhaqa aq, waxay burburiyaan magaaladii ay tagaan, dadkana way argagax-geliyaan" ayuu yiri Shar'amarke hadalkiisa ****dhigay. Ra'iisul wasaaruhu wuxuu ku eedeeyay mucaaradka inay dadka ugu hanjabaan dil, hadii ay taageeraan xukuumada, taasoo uu ku sheegay inaysan dadku awood u lahayn inay taageeraan dowladooda. "Waxaan weli la yaabanahay sababta mucaaradku ay u wadaan dagaalada aan ujeedada lahayn... waxay ku guuldareystaan inay gobol si dhab ah u joogaan... kooxahaas waxay carqaladeeyaan maamulada Islaamiga ah, hadana waxay sheeganayaan Islaam" ayuu carabka ku adkeeyay Sharma'arke. Kooxda Al-shabaab ayaa gacanta ku haysa inta badan Gobolada koonfureed ee Somalia, iyagoo sugay amaanka deegaanada ay gacanta ku hayaan, waxayna dadka deegaanadaas ku fuliyaan sharciga Islaamka, markii lagu helo dambi. Ra'iisul wasaaraha Somalia Cumar C/rashiid, wuxuu ku eedeeyay Madaxweynaha Eritrea Issias Afawerki inuu hubeynayo kooxaha mucaaradka ah ee dowladiisa ka horjeeda, iyadoo IGAD ay shalay cunoqabateyn saartay Al-shabaab iyo Eritrea. "Waxaan haynaa xaqiiqooyin dhab ah in Eritrea ay taageero buuxda oo hub iyo dhaqaale ah siiso kooxaha argagaxisada ah ee dowladeena ka horjeeda, dariiq ahaana loo istimcaalo, taasna waa wax laga murugoodo" ayuu yiri Sharma'arke. Dowlada Eritrea ayaa horaantii bishan iska fogeysay eedeymaha loosoo jeediyay ee ah inay hubeynayso mucaaradka Somalia; iyadoo UN-ka iyo Mareykanku ay sidoo kale ku eedeeyeen inay hurinayso dagaalada ka socda Somalia.
