Somali-American is new prime minister in Somalia Oct. 14, 2010, 12:17 p.m. EDT Associated Press MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — Somalia's president named a new prime minister on Thursday, bringing into the government a Somali-American who is a former diplomat. Prime Minister Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed replaces Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, who had a long-running feud with the president and resigned last month. A statement from the Somali government said that Mohamed is a former Somali diplomat, though it did not provide further details. The statement said Mohamed is an "educator who specializes in leadership skills, project management and conflict resolution." Mohamed has a master's degree in political science, it said. Mohamed will be asked to name a Cabinet within one month. Mark Bowden, a top U.N. official with oversight of Somalia, said Mohamed's Cabinet is expected to be smaller than the bloated group of politicians that Sharmarke had control over. Among officials in Sharmarke's Cabinet was a minister of tourism in a violence-plagued country that sees only a handful of tourists each year. Somalia's Transitional Federal Government controls only a few blocks of Mogadishu and is generally seen as corrupt, weak and ineffective. The government has accomplished little since its inception in 2004. Somalia hasn't had a fully functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew the president. The U.S. last month announced a new, dual track approach to Somalia that will see continued American support of the transitional government but also new, direct support of other groups and regions in Somalia. The new approach includes increased support to the semiautonomous Somali regions of Somaliland and Puntland.

Today’s nugget of wisdom: Thinking something in imperial terms results in justifying one’s attitudes and behaviors in conspiratorial manner . Ayyoub, the conspiracy theories you listed were all just that, conspiracy theories. There were no such plans. It was all in your mind. Alas, it still IS . xaaji xunjuf, horta Maxamed Dheeg maanta ma noolyahay mise waa dhintay? Allow raxmad ku sii.

Generale D, and Gheelle.T Good to hear Dr. Dhagacadde's public maternity commitment and the upcoming fund raising for GGH.

xaaji xunjuf, how else could one explain Qasims celebratory verses over the mass exodus of what then was thought to be solely a D-block political migration, but later proved to be true with all Somalis that faced insecurity in a stateless Somalia? Or better yet, explain what Mohamed Dheeg meant in his famous poem in which he equated the D-block rule to a colonial imposition dalka waa lakala leeyahay iyo dawladda illeene’e dayfkii martiyey reerka ee daacaduna soortay e ee goortuu dibiray xoolihii reerka kula dooday illeen kama duwana tan ay wadaan nimanka daa-roode

Gabal is right. Faroole succeeded to a certain degree to cancel out the secessionist claim. In both development fund allocation as well as in the security policy formation toward the horn, Somaliland, Puntland and the South are seen in the realm of Somali politicking. And in that well-expressed chess game, there is no political value to pick a PM from Puntland whose sole political theatre is in the South. Hence the advantage is with Gedo, and other Jubbooyinka communities (as long the slanderous 4.5 formula is in place). With all the darts thrown out at the concept of federal Somali state, and with all of the ICG’s promotion of policy of separation, it’s noteworthy that none succeeded to stick. The realist view has thus far prevailed.

While reality depicts a more different picture: D-block is just one group of the major Somali groups . There are many problems with such thinking, chief amongst of which is the notion that the entire Somali government with all its institution belonged to a one group. Such thinking is what got the pearl of Indian Ocean where it is today. It’s what caused political thinkers in the north to do every thing they could to separate themselves from their own people and country while going great lengths to espouse false similarities with distant communities and civilizations---as far as Ethiopian highlanders.

Abu Salman, It would be interesting to see stats on this area in Somaliland. Che, very true indeed! But for such focus to succeed, a peaceful environment must be created. Leaders of these regions get away with not funding these basic social needs because of the perceived security instability and the constant fear emanating from those groups that want to violently change things to their liking. General D, from I what gather, this event is about a private clinic. Of course the good doctor who owns this clinic deserves encouragement for the good, quality work he does. But I would like to see a different initiative to rehabilitate public hospitals, and recruit professionals for this area. Puntland’s current Health minister’s efforts to get adequate budget from Garowe also needs to be highlighted and supported.

But hiding the names of prominent Somali nationalists such as Mr. Awaale (the flag designer) who contributed to the Somali cause positively is not the way. We should celebrate names like his and other heroes as well.

Libaahe, this has nothing to do with politics. The good minister has been on a peace mission between two brotherly communities in the region. It is sad that his mission has not succeeded. -
